A comparison of two structured diagnostic interviews: CIDI and SCAN.

The relationship between and the inter-rater reliability of the Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI) and the Schedules for Clinical Assessment in Neuropsychiatry (SCAN) for anxiety and depressive disorders were explored. The CIDI and the SCAN were administered by trained interviewers in counterbalanced order. A subsample of interviews was observed to determine the inter-rater reliability of the instruments. Subjects were 101 patients accepted for treatment at an Anxiety Disorders Clinic; 29 of the 101 patients participated in the inter-rater reliability study. Concordance between the instruments as measured by canonical correlation analysis was moderate for current (r = 0.69, p = 0.05) and for lifetime (r = 0.66, p = 0.05) diagnoses. Inter-rater reliability of the CIDI was perfect (overall intraclass kappa = 1.00), and of the SCAN was good (overall intraclass kappa = 0.67). It is concluded that although the two instruments made similar diagnostic distinctions, the clinical judgment involved in administering the SCAN resulted in the more moderate levels of agreement between the interviewer and observer than those found for the CIDI.

Correlation between EEG spectral parameters and an educational evaluation.

EEG spectral parameters were computed in a group of children with different degrees of difficulty in learning to read and write. For statistical analyses, Z-transformed values according to normative age-regression equations were used to control the age effects. Canonical Correlation Analysis between absolute power in different bands and the categories of the educational evaluation (good, regular, poor and very poor) showed that more delta was probably related to a poor evaluation and more alpha in occipital areas to a good one. MONOVA also showed highly significant differences in the absolute power in many leads between children with different evaluations. As children with a poor evaluation very frequently had antecedents of risk factors related to brain damage and were from a low socioeconomic status, and both factors have been shown to affect absolute power, it may be that the differences observed were due to these causes. However, relative power correlated more with the learning problems. Children with minor difficulties, with no antecedents and with good socioeconomic status had more theta in almost all leads than children with a good evaluation and with the same characteristics. Children with a poor, or very poor, evaluation had more delta in left frontal and temporal areas (F3, F7 and T3) which may reflect underlying cerebral dysfunction of these regions directly involved in reading and writing processes.

Perinatal risk factors as predictors of developmental functioning.

This study examined the relationship between perinatal risk factors and developmental functioning for a referred population of 216 children. A canonical correlation analysis indicated that 31% of the variability in developmental information could be predicted from perinatal events. The results were interpreted as lending support to a multivariate link between perinatal complications and developmental functioning for referred children.

Energy intake and gross efficiency comparisons from calorimetric and field data on the same lactating cows.

Field estimates on gross efficiency were obtained from intake and production data on 30 pluriparous Holsteins cows during wk 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, and 15 postpartum. Energy intake and efficiency from the energy chamber on the same cows were measured during wk 6, 10, and 14 postpartum. Measures of gross efficiency were expressed in terms of the utilization of metabolizable energy or net energy for lactation and maintenance. Within corresponding postpartum periods, chamber measures and field estimates were compared by canonical correlation analysis. All estimates from field data of energy and gross efficiencies closely approximated measures of the same traits from energy chamber data. Variation among cows in traits of energy partition and gross efficiency was similar for field estimates and energy chamber measures. Correlations were > .66 between field estimates and chamber measures on observations of maintenance energy and milk energy. Field estimates and chamber measurements of metabolizable energy and net energy had correlations of .76 and .70, respectively.

Student nurse recruitment: determinants for choosing a nursing program.

Competitive recruitment of nursing school applicants requires a thorough understanding of why they pick a particular school. By applying marketing techniques, nursing schools can identify their institutions' perceived strengths and tailor their recruitment efforts to applicants' needs. Students and alumni (n = 228) responding to a mail survey indicated that their awareness of the nursing program was primarily through personal contacts and direct mail. Other marketing media were perceived as ineffective. Several market segments were identified through canonical correlation analysis: traditional and nontraditional students. Traditional students (under age 25, unmarried, local, in the baccalaureate program) chose the program due to quality of clinical instruction and financial aid. Nontraditional students (age 25 or older, married, returning LPN or RN, transfer, in generic BSN or associate programs) decided to attend based on convenience. The research resulted in the development of recruiting materials emphasizing the unique strengths of the nursing program.

[Evaluation of the Uchida-Kräpelin psychodiagnostic test based on the Five-Factor Model of personality traits].

A method was proposed for evaluating the Uchida-Kräpelin psychodiagnostic (UK) test in terms of the Five-Factor Model (FFM) of personality traits. First, the oblique incomplete procrustes factor-rotation method by Jöreskog (1965) was applied to the results of the Adjective Check List (ACL) and the UK test administered to 370 subjects. Six oblique primary pattern values for the UK test were obtained as related to the task of addition work and personality traits. Second, the basic statistics including the values of test-retest reliabilities for work-curve measures in the UK test were presented, and canonical correlation analysis was applied to the data based on both personality traits and work-curve measures. Finally, correlations between the items of the ACL and the work-curve measures in the UK test were presented in order to confirm the validity of the present proposal for the UK test based on the FFM of personality traits.

[Recognition of vocal expression of emotion and its acoustic attributes].

The vocal expression of emotion was examined with both an auditory experiment and objective acoustic analyses. In the auditory experiment the stimuli were words or short sentences with six basic emotions expressed by two actors. Forty-five undergraduate and graduate students participated in the experiment. The results showed that the vocal expression of emotion was strongly identified, except in the case of fear, and that the six basic emotions could be plotted in a psychological space with two dimensions calculated from multidimensional scaling. The plot formed a roughly circular surface, with locations very similar to those of the facial expressions. One dimension was considered to represent the element of pleasantness-unpleasantness. The actors voices were then acoustically analyzed. The results suggested that the mean fundamental frequency (F0), the standard deviation (SD) of F0, and the SD of the energy are the important factors that define the characteristics of the vocal expression of emotions. To determine the most important parameter(s) and explain the two dimensions of the psychological space, canonical correlation analysis was conducted. The analysis indicated that F0 was correlated with the pleasantness-unpleasantness dimension.

Adolescent perceptions of college student drinking.

OBJECTIVE: To extend knowledge about perceived drinking norms by assessing perceptions of college student drinking in a sample of 7th- to 12th-graders. METHODS: Anonymous questionnaire was administered to 2,017 adolescents in two Ohio school districts. RESULTS: By seventh grade, 89.6% of the students had formed normative perceptions of collegiate drinking. A canonical correlation analysis revealed that perceptions of collegiate drinking have substantial, independent relationships not only with alcohol use intensity and drinking onset, but also with indicators of tobacco and other drug use as well. CONCLUSIONS: Exaggerated perceptions of college student drinking are psychosocial markers of substance use in 7th- to 12th-graders.

[Quality evaluation of indigowoad root and leaf by chemical pattern recognition].

27 samples of indigowoad root and 5 samples of indigowoad leaf from different species and in different habital were collected. The chemical constituents were analyzed by HPLC, and ten original chemical features as a whole obtained. Meanwhile, extrinsic bacteriostasis experiments were carried out for each of the 32 samples. Canonical correlation analysis was applied to the intercorrelation between the chemical and the pharmacologic data, and five chemical features were found to be the effective constituents. In the end, the 32 samples were divided into five classes by the fuzzy clustering technique ISODATA(interachive self-organizing data analysis technique A).

[Relationship between soil enzyme activities and trace element contents in Eucalyptus plantation soil].

Canonical correlation analysis on soil enzyme activities and trace element contents in Eucalyptus plantation soil showed that among the test elements, only Zn and Mn affected enzyme activity. Both Zn and Mn increased soil proteinase activity. Zn decreased the activities of soil urease and peroxidase, while Mn promoted them. "Integral soil enzyme factor" could be used as an index of soil fertility. Together with other growth factors, this index should be considered when evaluating soil fertility of Eucalyptus forest sites. It also had a definite significance on the division of Eucalyptus soil families.

Failure to generalize determinants of self-reported physical activity to a motion sensor.

We hypothesized that the prediction of physical activity from psychological determinants would differ when free-living physical activity was assessed by electromechanical or self-report methods. We assessed outcome-expectancy values and perceived barriers for physical activity (OE Values/P Barriers) and physical self-efficacy in 44 young (24 yr +/- 4.8) Caucasian men (N = 13) and women (N = 31). Two weeks later, subjects kept a daily diary and wore a Caltrac motion sensor during all ambulation for seven consecutive days. Reliability (PI) across days was high for MET.h of activity estimated by the diary (0.82) and for Caltrac counts (0.87). Canonical correlation analysis yielded one significant linear combination (Rc = 0.55, P less than 0.01; redundancy = 0.19 to 0.24) of the set of psychological variables [OE Values/P Barriers (beta = 0.76) and physical self-efficacy (B = 0.33)] and the set of physical activity estimates [7-d diary (B = 0.89) and Caltrac (beta = 0.24)]. Multiple correlations indicated that the linear combination of OE Values/P Barriers and physical self-efficacy explained 26% of the variation in MET.h reported in the 7-d diary (P less than 0.01) but was unrelated to Caltrac counts (P greater than 0.05). The strongest bivariate model included the 7-d diary and OE Values/P Barriers (r = 0.51, P less than 0.01). Caltrac counts were weakly related to OE Values/P Barriers (r = 0.34, P less than 0.05).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

[Effect of Jinggang Mountain forests on regional ecological environment].

Based on the late years' data of forest resources, climate, hydrology and atmosphere in Jinggang Mountain region and by the methods of canonical correlation analysis and multiple linear stepwise regression, this paper analyzed the influence of forests on the climate, water quality and atmosphere of this region. The results showed that forest volume had an evident effect on maximum daily precipitation, extreme highest air temperature and atmospheric SO2 concentration, and on COD(cr) and ammonic nitrogen contents in river water. The greater the regional forest volume, the less maximum daily precipitation and the lower extreme highest air temperature, atmospheric SO2 concentration and water COD(cr) and ammonic nitrogen contents. Forest cover percentage could remarkably affect soil erosion modulus and atmospheric NOx concentration: the two latter were decreased as forest cover percentage increased. These results will provide theoretic foundation for the evaluation of the environmental value and ecological benefit of forest.

HCl emission characteristics and BP neural networks prediction in MSW/coal co-fired fluidized beds.

The HCl emission characteristics of typical municipal solid waste (MSW) components and their mixtures have been investigated in a phi 150 mm fluidized bed. Some influencing factors of HCl emission in MSW fluidized bed incinerator was found in this study. The HCl emission is increasing with the growth of bed temperature, while it is decreasing with the increment of oxygen concentration at furnace exit. When the weight percentage of auxiliary coal is increased, the conversion rate of Cl to HCl is increasing. The HCl emission is decreased, if the sorbent (CaO) is added during the incineration process. Based on these experimental results, a 14 x 6 x 1 three-layer BP neural networks prediction model of HCl emission in MSW/coal co-fired fluidized bed incinerator was built. The numbers of input nodes and hidden nodes were fixed on by canonical correlation analysis technique and dynamic construction method respectively. The prediction results of this model gave good agreement with the experimental results, which indicates that the model has relatively high accuracy and good generalization ability. It was found that BP neural network is an effectual method used to predict the HCl emission of MSW/coal co-fired fluidized bed incinerator.

Relation between clinical and instrumented measures of motor coordination in traumatically brain injured persons.

Right and left upper extremity motor coordination was evaluated in 40 traumatically brain injured subjects using two different measurement techniques--a conventional clinical evaluation and an instrumented evaluation. The relationship between the results from the clinical evaluation (finger to nose test) and the instrumented evaluation (timed visual-arm coordinated lateral reach) was determined using canonical correlation analysis (Rc). Clinical and instrumented test scores were significantly correlated (Rc = .685, p = .002; Rc = .629, p = .008 for the right and left sides, respectively). The scores obtained by the clinical test had little variance; instrumented scores varied greatly among subjects. Significant differences did not exist between the right and left sides for the instrumented variables of average movement speed, accuracy, and index of coordination (paired t-tests, p = .550, p = .548, p = .627, respectively) or for the clinical variables of time of execution (paired t-test, p = .468) and tremor (Wilcoxon matched-pairs, p = .228). Although meaningful correlations were obtained, they do not conclusively indicate that the two tests measure the same concept of coordination. Therefore, it is suggested that the instrumented evaluation be used to complement the traditional clinical evaluation to increase the degree of objectivity in clinical measurement.

[Activity of plasma dopamine-beta-hydroxylase and urine excretion of catecholamines in patients with deficiency-cold and deficiency-heat syndromes].

Spectrophotometric assay of plasma dopamine-beta-hydroxylase (D beta H) activity and fluorospectrophotometric assay of urine catecholamines (CA) were performed in 30 patients and 21 normal persons. According to TCM, the patients were divided into two groups, 16 cases of deficiency-cold syndrome (DCD), and 14 cases of deficiency-heat syndrome (DHD). The results showed that in the patients with DCD, the activity of D beta H and the levels of CA were lower than those of the normal, whereas the activity of D beta H and the levels of CA of the patients with DHD were higher than those of the normal (P less than 0.01, P less than 0.05). Variations of the involved visceral organs determined in the traditional way made no difference to the above-mentioned changes. D beta H and CA correlated significantly to each other. The authors also took the canonical correlation analysis to the cases, the result showed that the heat syndrome correlated with D beta H and CA positively. These results showed hyperfunctioning of the sympathetic-adrenomedullary system in DHD and hypofunctioning of this system in DCD.

[A behavioral dental science research concerning prevention of dental fear. A report on the surveys of dental fear in four countries Japan, Indonesia, Brazil and Argentina].

We conducted a behavioral scientific research from the point of view of dental fear prevention. This time, the writers carried out the surveys with the goal of understanding and making clear the realities concerning dental anxiety in the four countries: Japan, Indonesia, Brazil and Argentina. The subjects were 728 dental students from the four countries, and the surveys consisted of 25 multiple choice questions which were divided into three major areas. The first area consisted of preliminary questions such as chief complaints and treatment experiences, the second area dealt with the reactions and physical responses on receiving dental treatment and the third area was on the different levels of anxiety shown during treatment expressed through feelings and reactions. We concluded as follows: 1. In Japan, 77% of the subjects reported having at least a little fear and this percentage was higher than those of other countries (45-65%). But in all countries, 4-7% of subjects reported having extreme dental fear. 2. In Japan and Brazil, women reported the higher fear than men. In Indonesia and Argentina, these results were the opposite. 3. According to canonical correlation analysis, a significant correlation between the level of physical reactions and the degree of dental anxiety was found in all countries. 4. In the high fear group, dental anxiety increased by psychological stress before treatment and the expressions of physical reactions were stronger than in the low fear group.

Total respiratory resistance and reactance in patients with diffuse interstitial lung disease.

In 54 patients with interstitial lung diseases and no signs of airway obstruction we measured lung volumes, maximal expiratory flows, diffusing capacity (DLCO), total respiratory resistance (Rrs) and reactance (Xrs) between 4 and 26 Hz by means of the forced oscillation technique. In all patients DLCO was less than 75% of the expected value. Patients were classified into two groups depending on total lung capacity (TLC): group A with TLC less than 80% of expected, and group B with TLC of 80% or more. Group A demonstrated a decrease of Xrs especially at low frequencies, with small, not significant changes in Rrs. In the patients in this group with the lowest values of TLC (less than 50%), we observed an increase of Rrs at low frequencies causing a negative frequency dependence of Rrs. In group B no distinct changes of Rrs and Xrs occurred. Canonical correlation analysis between routine lung function data and forced oscillation parameters, showed tight correlations between TLC in absolute value or VC in percent of the predicted value on the one hand and average level of Xrs and average slope of Xrs (and Rrs) vs frequency curves on the other hand. Measurements of lung mechanics in five additional patients and comparison with a model of the respiratory system suggest that the changes of Rrs and Xrs are not explained totally by the observed increase in lung tissue resistance and decrease in lung compliance. The observed changes in Rrs and Xrs are not specific for restrictive lung disorders; similar changes are met also in moderately advanced obstructive diseases.

Respiratory symptoms and the maximum expiratory flow-volume curve; a multivariate approach.

Information on the size and shape of about 8500 maximum expiratory flow-volume (MEFV) curves was related multivariately to respiratory symptoms to construct a sensitive measure of airflow limitation. The data were obtained in an epidemiological follow-up study of a normal population in The Netherlands. Using non-linear canonical correlation analysis, thirteen variables from each curve yielded two uncorrelated variates which were optimally related to two variates simultaneously derived from all respiratory data. Curves with different size and shape may yield the same probability for respiratory symptoms. In this context the scores of individuals on the scales of the two curve-derived variates do not have to be corrected for body or lung size. Using FEV1 and standing height about half as much of the variability in respiratory symptoms is explained as when using the whole MEFV-curve. Moreover, the distribution of the scores for the MEFV-curves allows the differentiation between three patterns of airflow limitation graphically. These three types suggest different pathophysiological mechanisms related to airways resistance and lung elastic recoil and may be used to characterize individual curves. One type relates to subjects with symptoms of 'asthma', one to airflow limitation as found among people with dyspnoea and elderly subjects and another to bronchitic symptoms. In females, the association of the MEFV-curve with 'asthma' is stronger than in males but much weaker with bronchitic symptoms. Curves found to be more related to 'asthma' or bronchitic symptoms, but not to dyspnoea, are more prevalent among current than among never smokers in males.
