[Relations of regulatory polypeptide and syndrome differentiation of traditional Chinese medicine of angina pectoris patients].

Ninety cases of angina pectoris patients with the Deficiency of Heart Qi Syndrome (DHQS), Deficiency of Heart-Yin Syndrome (DHYS) and blood stasis in Heart vessels Syndrome (BSHVS) were studied. The number of patients were 30 for each group. Their regulatory polypeptides:atrial natri-uretic polypeptide (ANP), beta-Endorphine (beta-EP), Endothelin (ET), Angiotensin (A-II) were tested. Results showed that in comparing with normal level, P < 0.05 or < 0.01, ANP and beta-EP of them: DHQS > BSHVS > normal group > DHYS. ET and A-II of them: DHYS > BSHVS > normal group > DHQS. And the comparison between groups revealed that P < 0.05 or < 0.01. So ANP, beta-EP, ET and A-II were the principal material basis, and they could be the specific objective parameters of the Syndrome Differentiation.

[Experimental study of warming and recuperating kidney yang by you-gui-yin].

Yang deficiency animal models were induced by hydrocortisone 1 mg/day for 7-day to male mice. Then these model mice of experimental group were perfused by gastrogavage with 0.5 ml You-gui-yin (YGY) solution, the control group 0.5 ml normal saline 10-day. The plasma circular nucleotide and cortisol were radioimmunoassay by r-immune counter. The content of cAMP of experimental group was 144.24 +/- 33.35 pmol/ml, the control group 109.11 +/- 31.98 pmol/ml (P less than 0.05). The contents of cGMP were 28.39 +/- 10.22 and 45.39 +/- 15.33 pmol/ml respectively (P less than 0.05). The contents of cortisol were 12.42 +/- 2.21 and 8.96 +/- 1.19 micrograms/dl respectively (P less than 0.05). On the other hand YGY to the model mice could raised the living ability at low temperature. The results suggested that YGY had the effect of adjusting system circular nucleotide and promoting the secretion of adrenal cortex.

[Study of the relation of the typology of nephrotic syndrome and red cell C3b receptor, T cell function].

This paper reports the determined results of rosette rates of red cell C3b receptor and active rosette (Ea) rates of T lymphocyte in 39 cases of nephrotic syndrome. Typology of nephrotic syndrome according to TCM differentiation symptoms, all the 39 cases were divided into three types: (1) 13 cases of deficiency of Qi of the Spleen with stagnancy of dampness; (2) 9 cases of deficiency of Yang of the Spleen and Kidney; (3) 17 cases of deficiency of Yin of the Liver and Kidney. The results showed that the red cell C3b receptor rosette rate and Ea rosette rate in 39 cases of nephrotic syndrome were significantly lower than those in the control. The difference between the two groups was very obvious (P less than 0.001) among the three types. The rosette rates of both in the deficiency of Qi of the Spleen and deficiency of Yang of the Spleen and Kidney were markedly decreased than those in the control (P less than 0.001). Whereas, the red cell C3b receptor rosette rate was lower than that in the control (P less than 0.01), and T cell Ea rosette rate showed no statistical difference (P greater than 0.05) in the deficiency of Yin of the Liver and Kidney. There was a close relationship between the immune dysfunction of red cell and the pathogenesis in nephrotic syndrome. There was markedly relationship between the pathogenesis of deficiency of Yang of the Spleen and Kidney and deficiency of Qi of Spleen with stagnancy of dampness and T cell immune dysfunction. While the Ea level in deficiency of Yin of the Liver and Kidney was closely correlated with the control. Probably this type was nephrotic nephrosis which had been treated with TCM-WM.

Clinical observation on 84 cases of ventricular premature beat with deficiency syndrome treated by qi lu tang.

From August 1989 to May 1994, 84 cases of ventricular premature beat (VPB) with deficiency syndrome were treated with our empirical prescription called Qi Lü Tang Decoction for Improving Abnormal Heart Beat). The total effective rate was 88.10%, being significantly different from that of the control group treated with the Western drug propafenone (P < 0.01). Qi Lü Tang exhibited a better therapeutic effect in cases of VPB with deficiency of qi, deficiency of both qi and blood, and deficiency of both qi and yin.

A follow-up study of 69 discharged SARS patients.

Sixty-nine patients with severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) discharged from Guangdong Provincial TCM Hospital were followed up from January to April 2003 during which the patients were asked to fill the questionnaire form and at the same time received blood routine examination, hepatic, renal, pulmonary and immune function tests, and spiral computerized tomography (CT) of the chest, color B-ultrasonography of the heart with the collected data treated by descriptive analysis and deductive analysis. The results showed that in the 69 followed-up patients, impairment of the hepatic function was found in 5 cases, hypoimmune state in 18, impediment of ventilation in the distal air passages with normal major air passages in 15, increased residual volume in 40, mild disturbance of pulmonary diffusion function in 14, incomplete absorption of inflammatory exudates, focal or multiple interstitial lesions, pulmonary interstitial fibrosis and pleural adhesion in 24; increased resistance or mild systolic hypertension in the pulmonary circulation, and segmental ischemia of the left myocardium in 34; and decreased visual acuity in 2. According to TCM differentiation 24 cases belonged to the type of deficiency of both qi and yin, 8 deficiency of both the heart and spleen, 37 depression of the liver and deficiency of the spleen, 18 intermingling with damp-heat, and 7 intermingling with stagnant blood. Some patients still had psychological problems. The study indicates that though clinically cured and discharged from hospital, some SARS patients have functional impairment of the heart, lung and liver, hypoimmune state as well as psychological problems, and need to be treated accordingly for a complete recovery. A rationale for suggested TCM treatment is expounded.

[Relation between traditional Chinese medicine differential types and plasma levels of renin, angiotension II, aldosterone, atrial natriuretic factor in patients with essential hypertension].

130 cases of patients with essential hypertension (EH) and 70 cases of normal subjects were researched for correlation between TCM differential types and plasma levels of renin, angiotension II, aldosterone, atrial natriuretic factor (ANF) in patients with EH. Results indicated that: (1) basic level of renin was lower in patients with EH than that in normal subject. There were significant differences of plasma levels of renin between different TCM types. Plasma renin level of excessive Yang patients was higher than that in normal subject group and groups of deficiency of Yin essence combined with excessive Yang as well as deficiency of both Yin and Yang (P less than 0.01-0.001). Plasma level of angiotension II was significantly higher in group of excessive Yang than that in normal subject and other two groups (P less than 0.01-0.001). It was indicated that there were correlation between plasma basic level of renin, angiotension II and TCM types. (2) Plasma ANF level in patients with EH was significantly lower than that in group of normal subject (P less than 0.01). There were significant differences between groups of three different TCM types (P greater than 0.05). The result suggested that lower plasma ANF level was general character in three groups with EH. The prognosis of these patients was discussed.

A clinical study on TCM differentiation of symptoms and signs in pregnancy hypertension syndrome.

An epidemiological investigation was made into the diagnostic types of 457 cases of pregnancy classified according to differentiation of symptoms and signs by traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) with the aim of finding out its relationship with pregnancy hypertension syndrome (PHS). The total occurrence rate of PHS was 36.8%. In early pregnancy, 65.9% of patients with deficiency of yin of the liver had a high rate of developing PHS, while in the intermediate stage, 61.6% of patients with deficiency of the spleen and exuberance of the liver were most liable to develop it. In 50 cases diagnosed and treated on the basis of TCM differentiation of symptoms and signs the incidence was reduced to be 20%. The changes of such biochemical indices as ACh, AChE, cholic acid and gastrin in different diagnostic types during pregnancy, as well as the effect of spleen-invigorating therapy on these indices in pregnancy with deficiency of the spleen were also observed.

[Controlled study of needle warming therapy and electroacupuncture on simple obesity of spleen deficiency type].

OBJECTIVE: To compare therapeutic effects of needle warming therapy and electroacupuncture on simple obesity with spleen deficiency. METHODS: Sixty-eight cases of simple obesity with spleen deficiency, including water-dampness retention due to spleen deficiency, qi-deficiency of the lung and spleen, yang-deficiency of the spleen and kidney, were randomly divided into a needle warming therapy group (n = 36) and an electroacupuncture group (n = 32). Zhongwan(CV 12), Shuifen (CV 9), Qihai (CV 6), Zhongji (CV 3), Tianshu (ST 25), Shuidao (ST 28), and so on were selected as main acupoints in the both groups. Their therapeutic effects and body mass indexes were observed. RESULTS: The total effective rate was 88.9% in the needle warming therapy group and 71.9% in the electroacupuncture group with a significant difference between the two groups (P < 0.05); and there was a significant difference between the two groups in decrease of body mass index (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Needle warming therapy has definite and long-term therapeutic effect on simple obesity with spleen deficiency.

[Experimental study on the effect of nourishing yin and tranquilizing of yangyin anshen koufuye].

Yangyin Anshen Koufuye could obviously decrease the spontaneous activity of rats, effectively shorten the process of falling into sleep of normal rats which were injected pentobarbital sodium and prolong the sleeping time. The effect of sedation and hypnotism were the same as Zhaoren Anshen Koufuye. Yangyin Anshen Koufuye also could markedly reduce the serum tensity of T3, T4 of hyperthyroid rats, which equaled to TCM's deficiency of yin. It also could prevent the glycogen content of liver from decreasing, decrease heart rate, resist weight losing, thus to show the effect of nourishing Yin and tranquilizing.

[Potential effects of the methods for warming yang and nourishing yin on long-term prognosis of chronic heart failure].

Warming yang, which is one of the treatment principles of traditional Chinese Medicine, is very important in treating chronic heart failure, especially late-stage heart failure. It has been proved in many experiments and clinical trials that warming yang can improve the hemodynamic parameters. The treatment strategy for heart failure has changed from short-term correction of hemodynamic parameters to long-term rehabilitation approaches. We discussed the possible negative-effects of warming yang on neuroendocrine responses and myocardial remodeling. The potential beneficial effects of treatment for nourishing yin or nourishing yin combined with warming yang on heart failure were also explored.

[Comparison studies on pharmacodynamics of three kind of Carapax trionycis].

Three kinds of Carapax Trionycis were used in rat to prevent and treat syndrom-complex of dificiency of Yin. Compareing the improvement of symptoms of dificiency of Yin, it was found that all of them actted effectively in various degrees. The effect of ZhongHua Carapax Trionycis (ZHCT) was similar to those of Shan Rui Carapax Trionycis (SRCT), but the efficacy of Green Carapax Trionycis (GCT) was inferior to those of ZHCT and SRCT. All kinds of C. Trionycis could increase the function of responding to iriation in mice with deficiency of Yin. The intensity of ZHCT was similar to that of GCT, and superior to that of SRCT. They all could enhance phagocytic function of eticuloedothelial system obviously, promot the development of thymus in different degrees with no efect on spleen in young mice. The efficacy of increasing the immune function of ZHCT and GCT were more potent than that of SRCT. ZHCT and GCT significantly decreased the activity of SGPT in mice poisoned by CC14. ZHCT and GCT protected liver better than SRCT did.

[Treatment of immunological infertility with Chinese medicinal herbs of ziyin jianghuo].

According to the microcosmic Syndrome Differentiation, immunological infertility is recognised as Kidney Yin Deficiency-Hyperactivity of Fire Syndrome. Zhibai Dihuang Pills, a recipe of Chinese medicinal herbs, was used to treat the infertile couples with antisperm and/or antizona pellucida antibodies in their blood serum. It was found that after the treatment, the antibodies were converted to negativeness in 81.3% of immunological infertile couples. All 8 cases of successful pregnancy occurred in 1-9 months after antibodies negative conversion and the negative status was maintained throughout the course of pregnancy.

Improvement of cerebral ATP and choline deficiencies by Shao-Yin-Ren Shi-Quang-Da-Bu-Tang in senescence-accelerated mouse prone 8.

Shao-Yin-Ren Shi-Quang-Da-Bu-Tang (SDT) has been used traditionally to improve the systemic blood circulation and biological energy production in the body. The object of this study is to determine the effect of SDT extract on the decline of cerebral adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and choline content associated with learning and memory impairments in senescence-accelerated mice prone 8 (SAM P8). Twenty-four-week old mice were orally treated with SDT at 400 mg/kg body weight per day, and continued for 12 consecutive weeks. At the termination of the treatment, the body weight of SAM P8 was markedly lower than that of the equal aged senescence-resistant prone 1 (SAM R1), but this was conspicuously recovered to the level of SAM R1 by SDT treatment. SDT also significantly reduced the decline of cerebral weight (P < 0.05). By comparison with normal mice, a spontaneous decrease of cerebral ATP was observed in the SAM P8. Two- and 6-fold increases of cerebral ATP content were found in SAM R1 and SAM P8 by SDT administration, respectively. The cerebral choline content was significantly different between SAM R1 and SAM P8 aged 36-week old (P < 0.01). SDT remarkably restored the decrease of cerebral choline content in SAM P8 (P < 0.01). Taken together, these results demonstrate that SDT can reduce the decrease of cerebral weight, and restore the decline of cerebral ATP and choline content associated with an alteration of neuronal metabolism in SAM P8 brain. This suggests that pharmacological properties of SDT may participate in improvement of declined cerebral energy production and cholinergic neurotransmitter synthesis in senile dementia.

[Effect of a decoction of six ingredients with rehmannia on the periodontal tissues of animals with kidney diseases].

In this paper, Kidney Yin and Yang deficiency animal models were made by the medicine (hydrocortisone, thyroxin). At the same time the occlusal trauma was accompanied. It was caused by means of corprophagy (microorganism) fed and artificial damage. The authors observed the injuries and effects of the local and systemic factors caused on the periodontal tissues of rats. From the experiment the authors found the injuries of the periodontal tissues in Kidney deficiency models were severer than those of the models without Kidney deficiency. The results showed that the function of the traditional medicine was a matter of protection, regeneration and repairing to the periodontal tissues of Kidney Yin deficiency models. In addition, the weights and activities of the experimental animals fed by Decoction of Six Ingredients with Rehmannia were higher than those without taking the traditional medicine.

Levels of sexual hormones in relation with syndrome-differentiation of TCM in patients of chronic renal failure.

Determinations of plasma levels of sexual hormones in 43 male patients of chronic renal failure showed that the content of testosterone (T) decreased markedly, while estradiol (E2) and E2/T ratio were obviously higher than in normal subjects, with no significant correlation between the levels of these sexual hormones and renal function. According to syndrome-differentiation of TCM, 17 of the 43 cases belonged to deficiency of Kidney-yang, and the other 26 cases deficiency of Kidney-yin. In the patients with deficiency of Kidney-yang, the E2 level was not increased, but the T content decreased to make the E2/T ratio apparently elevated; whereas in the patients with deficiency of Kidney-yin, both E2 and E2/T were elevated. The level of E2 in deficiency of Kidney-yin was markedly higher than that in deficiency of Kidney-yang. The results indicated that patients of chronic renal failure of the type of deficiency of Kidney-yang differed in syndrome as well as in levels of the sexual hormones from the type of deficiency of Kidney-yin; however, the sexual hormones were not correlated with the renal functions in the two types of patients.

[Relation of T-lymphocyte subsets and symptom complex groups of patients with chronic aplastic anemia].

The T-lymphocyte subsets of 38 patients with chronic aplastic anemia (CAA) were measured by monoclonal antibody (McAb) and ABC method and the relationship of T-lymphocyte subsets and symptom complex groups by traditional Chinese medicine theory were also analysed. It was shown that the T subsets of patients with CAA have remarkable changes: Ts (41.3 +/- 11.2%) increased more than the control (22.9 +/- 4.5%), Th/Ts decreased significantly more than the normal control (0.98 +/- 0.38 to 1.59 +/- 0.38). From the group of deficiency of both vital energy and blood to the group of deficiency of Kidney-yang to the group of deficiency of Kidney-Yin to the group of deficiency of both Kidney-Yang and Kidney-Yin, the Th lymphocyte gradually decreased, Ts lymphocyte successfully increased (from 33.8 +/- 7.9% to 57.7 +/- 7.5%), Th/Ts ratio declined (from 1.29 +/- 0.36 to 0.57 +/- 0.19). The Th/Ts ratio of the latter two groups decreased more than the former two groups (P less than 0.01). These results indicated that the T lymphocyte subsets and symptom complex group of patients with CAA were closely related and when deficient Yang affects Yin the immunologic function of body has a more obvious change. This revealed the connotation of Kidney-Yin and Kidney-Yang on the immuno-regulating cells (T lymphocyte subsets) level.
