The problem of the missing wavelet.

A block face was generated by dividing a drawn face into a matrix of rectangular cells and then making the brightness of each cell equal to the average of the brightnesses within the facial area circumscribed by a cell. A wavelet analysis was performed on the numbers representing the brightnesses of the cells in each row of the matrix, and from each row, the wavelet was deleted which corresponded to the fundamental or the lowest frequency sine wave of a complex wave. The appearance of the block face was not substantially altered by the deletion of the wavelet corresponding to the fundamental.

A method for visualization of ventricular fibrillation: Design of a cooled fiberoptically coupled image intensified CCD data acquisition system incorporating wavelet shrinkage based adaptive filtering.

The measurement of cardiac transmembrane potential changes with voltage sensitive dyes is in increasing use. Detection of these very small fluorescent alterations using large multiplexed arrays, such as charge coupled device (CCD) cameras at high sampling rates, has proven challenging and usually requires significant averaging to improve the signal-to-noise ratio. To minimize the damage of living tissue stained with voltage sensitive dyes, excitation photon exposure must be limited, with the inevitable consequence of diminishing the fluorescence that is generated. State-of-the-art high frame rate CCD cameras have read noise levels in the 5-10 e(-) rms range, which is at least two orders of magnitude above that required to detect voltage sensitive dye alterations at individual pixels corresponding to 1 mm(2) heart regions illuminated with levels of 100 mW/cm(2) at frame rates approaching 1000 frames/sec. Image intensification is thus required prior to photon quantification. We report here the development of such a data acquisition system using commercially available hardware. Additionally, in the past ten years, a mathematical theory of multiresolution has been developed, and new building blocks called wavelets, allow a signal to be observed at different resolutions. Wavelet analysis also makes possible a new method of extricating signals from noise. We have incorporated spatially adaptive filters based on wavelet denoising of individual pixels to significantly reduce the multiple noise sources present in the acquired data. Analysis of theta power in hippocampal EEG during bar pressing and running behavior in rats during distinct behavioral contexts.

These experiments examine changes in theta power as measured by wavelet analysis in five rats performing a conditional visual discrimination task and a simple running task. In the conditional task, rats were trained to press one lever to initiate a trial and then to press one of two choice levers, each corresponding to one of two cue lights. Analysis of theta power in this operant task found a large decrease in theta power during the choice bar presses, in contrast to the increase in theta power during trial initiation bar presses. This result seems to stand counter to results that propose consistent relationships between motor actions and theta power (Vanderwolf, EEG Clin Neurophys 26:407-418, 1969), as well as studies suggesting that the lack of bar-press theta is the result of habituation. However, these data can be seen as being in broad agreement with the theoretical framework of sensorimotor integration (Bland and Oddie, Behav Brain Res 127:119-136, 2001). To investigate further the power of theta observed at the termination of type 1 motor activity, a runway task was devised in which rats ran back and forth between two ends of a linear track, one of which was always rewarded and the other never rewarded. Theta power decreased sharply 240 ms before movement ended at the rewarded end, but not at the unrewarded end of the track. These data extend the current scope of theory in demonstrating that hippocampal theta activity can end abruptly 200-400 ms prior to the end of type 1 motor movement when approaching the end of a motor sequence.

[Specific features of electrocardiographic information analysis based on wavelet transform].

Wavelet transform is a new tool for analysis of electrocardiographic information. In this work, we consider the procedure for selection of the mother wavelet on the basis of special criteria and substantiate an improved method for ECG analysis based on wavelet transform. An algorithm for selection of mother wavelet and synthesized wavelet providing optimal wavelet transform of ECG signal is developed. It is shown that 3D wavelet spectrograms should be constructed to increase the efficiency of assessment of the state of cardiovascular system.

Evidence of a shift in the cyclicity of Antarctic seabird dynamics linked to climate.

Ecosystems and populations are known to be influenced not only by long-term climatic trends, but also by other short-term climatic modes, such as interannual and decadal-scale variabilities. Because interactions between climatic forcing, biotic and abiotic components of ecosystems are subtle and complex, analysis of long-term series of both biological and physical factors is essential to understanding these interactions. Here, we apply a wavelet analysis simultaneously to long-term datasets on the environment and on the populations and breeding success of three Antarctic seabirds (southern fulmar, snow petrel, emperor penguin) breeding in Terre Adélie, to study the effects of climate fluctuations on Antarctic marine ecosystems. We show that over the past 40 years, populations and demographic parameters of the three species fluctuate with a periodicity of 3-5 years that was also detected in sea-ice extent and the Southern Oscillation Index. Although the major periodicity of these interannual fluctuations is not common to different species and environmental variables, their cyclic characteristics reveal a significant change since 1980. Moreover, sliding-correlation analysis highlighted the relationships between environmental variables and the demography of the three species, with important change of correlation occurring between the end of the 1970s and the beginning of the 1980s. These results suggest that a regime shift has probably occurred during this period, significantly affecting the Antarctic ecosystem, but with contrasted effects on the three species.

The role of leaf structure in vibration propagation.

The leaf and its structural components play a key role in the propagation of short transient signals produced by insects. In this paper, it is shown how the complex structure of an apple leaf could be modeled by a much simpler one for the analysis of vibratory signal propagation. Waves were produced by impacts of small spheres and the propagation studied using two laser vibrometers, followed by a wavelets analysis. Three components of the leaf were investigated: the midvein, minor veins, and the interspaced homogeneous regions making up the leaf lamina. The loss of signal energy over the leaf lamina and across minor veins and midvein was studied. For the midvein, the loss of energy decreased from 80% at the leaf base to 40% at the apex. For minor veins, the loss of energy decreased from 70% at the leaf base to 31% at the apex. The loss in homogeneous regions was 40%. A signal decomposition into two frequency ranges, above and below 1.7 kHz, showed that the midvein acted as a low-pass filter. As energy loss was mainly a function of vein diameter and not vein type, veins smaller or equal to 0.2 mm were considered as equivalent to homogeneous regions. Hence, a model leaf reduced to the leaf lamina and veins with a diameter >0.2 mm is retained for the study of signal propagation in a leaf.

Desynchronisation of spontaneously recurrent experimental seizures proceeds with a single rhythm.

Here we investigate the temporal properties of recurrent seizure-like events (SLEs) in a low-[Mg(2+)] model of experimental epilepsy. Simultaneous intra- and extracellular electric signals were recorded in the CA3 region of rat hippocampal slices whereby cytosolic [Ca(2+)] transients were imaged by fluorescence detection. Recurrence pattern analysis was applied to give a measure of synchrony of simultaneously recorded intra- and extracellular electric signals and the SLE frequencies were extracted by complex wavelet analysis. Slices from the juvenile, but not the young adult rats, displayed several high-amplitude triplets of electric and [Ca(2+)] transients, termed paroxysmal spikes, followed by an SLE. Occurrence of the full-blown SLE was associated with decreased synaptic activity between the paroxysmal spikes that were seen as incomplete SLE starting sequences. The time series of recurrent SLEs provide evidence for a single SLE rhythm as continuously declining from about 200 Hz to below 1 Hz at the onset and termination of SLE, respectively, with an intermediate spectral discontinuity, tentatively identified with the tonic/clonic transition. All other frequency components were the harmonics of the fundamental rhythm, whereby the gamma and the theta band oscillations were not detected as separate activities. Recurrence showed decreasing temporal synchrony of intra- and extracellular signals during the SLE, suggesting that coincidence is destroyed by the SLE. Blockade of gap junctions with 200 microM carbenoxolone ceased recurrent SLEs. Release of gap junction blockade shortened both SLEs and their tonic phase indicating that persistent changes occurred via an altered gap junction coupling. We conclude that the initially precise temporal synchrony is gradually destroyed during ictal events with a single rhythm of continuously decreasing frequency. Blockade of gap junction coupling might prevent epileptic synchronisation.

[Application of wavelet packets analysis-interpolation-RBF to the simultaneous determination of Fe, Mn, Cu and Zn in aluminous-alloy].

A new approach was proposed so that noises invisible spectra are eliminated by wavelet packets, and the specimen numbers of calibration samples are increased by linear interpolation. It can used to solve problems of few specimen numbers and many variables in simultaneous spectrophotometric determination. Thus forecasting resultant veracity is improved. The contents of Fe, Mn, Cu and Zn in aluminous-alloy was determined simultaneously by using wavelet packets analysis-linear interpolation-RBF (radial basis function) neural networks (WPA-Interp-RBF). Wavelet packets analysis can eliminate noises to a desired level. Linear interpolation makes specimenof training samples cover recognizable room better. So RBF can abstract more characteristic information and improve its performance. Relative error(RE) of sample is reduced remarkably with desired results.

A fully automated algorithm for the determination of respiratory rate from the photoplethysmogram.

OBJECTIVE: To determine if an automatic algorithm using wavelet analysis techniques can be used to reliably determine respiratory rate from the photoplethysmogram (PPG). METHODS: Photoplethysmograms were obtained from 12 spontaneously breathing healthy adult volunteers. Three related wavelet transforms were automatically polled to obtain a measure of respiratory rate. This was compared with a secondary timing signal obtained by asking the volunteers to actuate a small push button switch, held in their right hand, in synchronisation with their respiration. In addition, individual breaths were resolved using the wavelet-method to identify the source of any discrepancies. RESULTS: Volunteer respiratory rates varied from 6.56 to 18.89 breaths per minute. Through training of the algorithm it was possible to determine a respiratory rate for all 12 traces acquired during the study. The maximum error between the PPG derived rates and the manually determined rate was found to be 7.9%. CONCLUSION: Our technique allows the accurate measurement of respiratory rate from the photoplethysmogram, and leads the way for developing a simple non-invasive combined respiration and saturation monitor.

Multimodal contribution to speech perception revealed by independent component analysis: a single-sweep EEG case study.

In this single-sweep electroencephalographic case study, independent component analysis (ICA) was used to investigate multimodal processes underlying the enhancement of speech intelligibility in noise (for monosyllabic English words) by visualizing facial motion concordant with the audio speech signal. Wavelet analysis of the single-sweep IC activation waveforms revealed increased high-frequency energy for two ICs underlying the visual enhancement effect. For one IC, current source density analysis localized activity mainly to the superior temporal gyrus, consistent with principles of multimodal integration. For the other IC, activity was distributed across multiple cortical areas perhaps reflecting global mappings underlying the visual enhancement effect.

Multiresolution decomposition of the signal-averaged ECG using the mallat approach for prediction of arrhythmic events after myocardial infarction.

The aim of this study was to analyze the ability of the multiresolution decomposition of the signal-averaged electrocardiogram (ECG) to discriminate between patients who develop life-threatening ventricular arrhythmias after myocardial infarction and those who do not and to compare the predictive values of this approach with those obtained from the analysis of ventricular late potentials in the time domain. Signal-averaged ECGs of 769 prospectively included patients were analyzed. A total of 42 arrhythmic events occurred during the follow-up period. For numerical calculations of wavelet analysis, the total and relative energies of the QRS complex were obtained in seven frequency bands. The combination of the relative energy in the frequency bands 7.8-15.6 Hz and 62.5-125 Hz enhanced statistical performance as compared with the time-domain parameters (positive predictive accuracy, 11.3 vs 8.2%). Combining wavelet transform and time-domain parameters enhanced the predictive values even more (positive predictive accuracy, 14.3%) compared with applying each method alone.

Wavelets in biomedical engineering.

Wavelets analysis methods have been widely used in the signal processing of biomedical signals. These methods represent the temporal characteristics of a signal by its spectral components in the frequency domain. In this way, important features of the signal can be extracted in order to understand or model the physiological system. This paper reviews the widely used orthogonal wavelet transform method in the biomedical applications.

Wavelet processing of systolic murmurs to assist with clinical diagnosis of heart disease.

Despite advances in imaging technologies for the heart, screening of patients for cardiac pathology continues to include the use of traditional stethoscope auscultation. Detection of heart murmurs by the primary care physician often results in the ordering of additional expensive testing or referral to cardiology subspecialists, although many of the patients are eventually found to have no pathologic condition. In contrast, auscultation by an experienced cardiologist is highly sensitive and specific for detecting heart disease. Although attempts have been made to automate screening by auscultation, no device is currently available to fulfill this function. Multiple indicators of pathology are nonetheless available from heart sounds and can be elicited using certain signal processing techniques such as wavelet analysis. Results presented here show that a signal of pathology, the systolic murmur, can reliably be detected and classified as pathologic using a portable electrocardiogram and heart sound measurement unit combined with a wavelet-based algorithm. Wavelet decomposition holds promise for extending these results to detection and evaluation of other audible pathologic indicators.

Visualization of epileptogenic phenomena using cross-correlation analysis: localization of epileptic foci and propagation of epileptiform discharges.

The main objectives of the preoperative evaluation of a patient with medically intractable epileptic seizures are localization of the foci and propagation of the epileptiform discharges. Electrocorticographic (ECoG) data of intractable focal epilepsy were analyzed using an AR model, wavelet analysis, and cross-correlation analysis. In order to derive the time-shifts, the cross correlations of the epileptiform discharges were calculated between electrodes for every unit of time. Further analyses were made by means of a set of contour maps of the time-shifts and sequential two- and three-dimensional visualizations of the time-shift maps in order to localize the epileptic foci and study their propagation process. Two types of foci and propagation were revealed in the results. In the first type, epileptiform discharges were generated at localized focal sites and spread quickly to other sites. In the second type, the foci of epileptiform discharges, which appeared soon after the former bursts, were localized at more than one site, and the discharges tended to spread more slowly. The findings suggest that epileptic phenomena can be caused by at least two kinds of mechanisms in one patient: in the former, the propagation might be mediated through synaptic projections, while in the latter, the extracellular diffusion of an excitatory factor might play an important role. In addition, our newly developed visualization technique for the localization of epileptic foci and the propagation of epileptiform discharges should prove useful in the study of epileptogenesis etiology.

Classification of acceleration waveforms during walking by wavelet transform.

In this study we have attempted to classify the acceleration signal, while walking both at horizontal level, and upstairs and downstairs, using wavelet analysis. The acceleration signal close to the body's center of gravity was measured while the subjects walked in a corridor and up and down a stairway. The data for four steps were analyzed and the Daubecies 3 wavelet transform was applied to the sequential data. The variables to be discriminated were the waveforms related to levels -4 and -5. The sum of the square values at each step was compared at levels -4 and -5. Downstairs walking could be discriminated from other types of walking, showing the largest value for level -5. Walking at horizontal level was compared with upstairs walking for level -4. It was possible to discriminate the continuous dynamic responses to walking by the wavelet transform.

Long-range periodic patterns in microbial genomes indicate significant multi-scale chromosomal organization.

Genome organization can be studied through analysis of chromosome position-dependent patterns in sequence-derived parameters. A comprehensive analysis of such patterns in prokaryotic sequences and genome-scale functional data has yet to be performed. We detected spatial patterns in sequence-derived parameters for 163 chromosomes occurring in 135 bacterial and 16 archaeal organisms using wavelet analysis. Pattern strength was found to correlate with organism-specific features such as genome size, overall GC content, and the occurrence of known motility and chromosomal binding proteins. Given additional functional data for Escherichia coli, we found significant correlations among chromosome position dependent patterns in numerous properties, some of which are consistent with previously experimentally identified chromosome macrodomains. These results demonstrate that the large-scale organization of most sequenced genomes is significantly nonrandom, and, moreover, that this organization is likely linked to genome size, nucleotide composition, and information transfer processes. Constraints on genome evolution and design are thus not solely dependent upon information content, but also upon an intricate multi-parameter, multi-length-scale organization of the chromosome.

A novel wavelet transform based analysis reveals hidden structure in ventricular fibrillation.

We report a new method of interrogating the surface ECG signal using techniques developed in the field of wavelet transform analysis. Previously unreported structure within the ECG during ventricular fibrillation (VF) is found using a high-resolution decomposition of the signal employing the continuous wavelet transform. We believe that wavelet transform methods could lead to the development of powerful tools for use in the resuscitation of patients with cardiac arrest.
