Lymphoid elements of the thymus were studied by scanning electron microscopy in rabbits susceptible to tuberculosis. The complete Freund adjuvant causes in the thymus a 3-fold decrease in the number of cells with the properties of T-lymphocytes, and an appearance of a new type of cell elements (polygonal shape, with cytoplasmic outgrowths). Formation of a focus of tuberculosis and the development of destructive changes in the lungs occur under conditions of a progressive decrease in the number of T- and B-lymphocytes in the thymus. Delimitation of the pathological process in the lung is characterized by an increase in the number of T- and B-lymphocytes and considerable predominance of polygonally shaped cells with cytoplasmic outgrowths of different lengths and their subsequent replacement by a cell form transitory between T- and B-lymphocytes. A relatively favourable course of the process in the lungs is observed when the cell elements in the thymus differentiate towards B-lymphocytes.

A pregnant woman in the 29th, week of gestation was admitted to the hospital with mediastinal pressure symptoms. A tentative diagnosis of lymphoma was made and the patient was given chemotherapy (vincristine, ciclophosphamide and adriamycin) plus radiotherapy, but no objective response was obtained. During the postoperative period (cesarean section) the patient developed clinical symptoms of muscular paralysis of unknown etiopathogenesis. Biopsy of a cervical lymph node showed histological pattern of tumor of the APUD system (chemodectoma). Multiple metastases appeared in the lungs, bones, brain, heart and ovaries in spite of treatment with various chemotherapeutic agents (vincristine, actinomycin D, CCNU and DTIC). Necropsy revealed the existence of a large tumor of the thymus gland, which histopathologic structure resembles to that of carcinoid. Ultrastructural examination showed abundant granules of neurosecretion confirming an APUD tumor. Cushing-like appearance of the patient was attributed "a posterior" to ACTH released by the tumor. A review ofthe clinical features, endocrine function and anatomical localizations of carcinoid tumors is included.

The diagnostic value of CT in follicular thymic hyperplasia and in thymomas in 8 patients with myasthenia gravis and in 12 patients without myasthenia gravis suffering from thymic tumors was evaluated by correlating CT-findings to surgical results and pathological-histological findings. Thymic size of the six patients with histologically proven follicular hyperplasia were scattered within the normal range, but half of them were at the upper limit. Thymic tumors were differentiated between invasive and non invasive tumors by CT staging. Solid tumors with different histology could not be further classified; the attenuation values ranging from 15-55 HU were the same in tumors, follicular hyperplasia and normal thymus.

1. The effects of alkylating agents and disulphides on the thiol-containing proteins of nuclei from rat thymus and liver were studied. Three protein fractions were examined: histones extracted with 50mm- and 250mm-hydrochloric acid and the residual protein. None of the reagents selectively reacted with any one of the protein fractions. 2. Amino acid uptake in vitro into the histones of nuclei from rat thymus was analysed by preparative electrophoresis of the proteins extracted with 50mm- and 250mm-hydrochloric acid. After 1hr. at 37 degrees the greater incorporation was into the proteins extracted with 50mm-hydrochloric acid. 3. Preparative electrophoresis was used to study the relative thiol contents of the proteins of the 50mm-hydrochloric acid extract from thymus nuclei by labelling the histones in vitro with (14)C-labelled N-ethylmaleimide. 4. The capacity of the proteins extracted from rat thymus with 50mm- and 250mm-hydrochloric acid, and of the components from these extracts separated by preparative electrophoresis, to combine with DNA and to depress DNA-dependent RNA synthesis was studied. The histones extracted with 50mm-hydrochloric acid were more lysine-rich than those extracted with 250mm-hydrochloric acid. Wide variations were found in the abilities of the separated components to depress RNA synthesis.

The paper presents detailed morphological characteristics of 31 thymomas and 25 microscopically similar neoplasias of the anterior mediastinum (carcinoid, seminoma, lymphogranulomatosis, angiofollicular lymphoma, etc). The term "thymoma" is determined as a tumour consisting of two components: mandatory epithelial one and lymphocytes. The diversity of the morphological picture of thymomas is determined mainly by the variability of the epithelial component. The special features of the ultrastructural organization of thymomas (the presence of desmosomes, tonofibrils and basal membrane) were revealed which facilitate the differential diagnosis of the anterior mediastinum tumours.
