Delegating intraoperative activities. A pilot study.

The purpose of phase one of this descriptive study was to obtain information about the research process. We identified problems associated with the pilot and examined the feasibility of completing phase two of the study at the national level. The pilot provided insight into the weaknesses and strengths of the tool design. It also identified interesting trends and data regarding delivery of intraoperative nursing care. The pilot study supported the ultimate goals of the research project, and we plan to continue with phase two of the study. Further research is needed to substantiate the findings and solidify the implications for perioperative nursing.

Absentee patterns among OR staff. Identifying aspects of the problem.

Absenteeism continues to be a great concern to hospital administrators. Nursing personnel should have a clear idea of acceptable attendance parameters based on written policies that are routinely administered. Efforts are now directed toward exploring strategies that reward personnel for good attendance records. Early development of professional attitudes related to absenteeism should continue to be supported and fostered. Implications from this preliminary study indicate that it may be more cost-effective to hire RNs than STs to work in ORs.

Prevention of blood exposure. Body and facial protection.

Regardless of the specific clinical setting in the operating room, it is clear that better protection of all personnel is an appropriate objective in the current environment. Better protection through improved PPE and modification of operational practices is essential. A prompt response to blood contact when it does occur is likewise appropriate. With conscientious applications of methods to reduce blood exposure, it is hoped that the operating room can become a safer place with respect to occupational infections from bloodborne pathogens.
