Investigations carried out by the authors have disclosed that practically all infants discharged from maternity clinics are S. aureus carriers, and 91.66-97.06% of them have proved to be epidemiologically dangerous as the source of infection. The use of lactic-acid bacteria, strain 317/407 "Narine" for the colonization of the nasal cavity of infants has led to a decrease in the total number of carriers up to 55.17%, and in the number of epidemiologically significant carriers up to 12.5%.

The effect of pivaloyloxymethyl ester of 6-beta-[(hexahydro-1H-azepin-1-yl)-methyleneamino]-penicillanic acid (pivmecillinam, FL 1039) on the gut flora of human subjects was investigated at different doses. Following administration of 1.2 g or 2.4 g/die E. coli and other enterobacteriaceae species were markedly reduced. The response of enterococci and bacteroides species showed no uniformity. No overgrowth of the gut flora by Pseudomonas, Staphylococci or Candida was observed. Meanwhile it has been possible to inspect stool specimens of a patient who was suffering from a septicaemic Salmonella infection and was treated with a combination of pivmecillinam-HCl 4 X 800 mg/pivampicillin-HCl 4 X 350 mg/die for one month. After disappearance of Salmonellae during therapy enterobacteriaceae decreased to amounts of 10(2)--10(4), all strains of which were highly susceptible to mecillinam.
Growth responses under hyperbaric helium of various procaryotic micro-organisms to graded levels of six water-soluble vitamins were measured. Vitamins included: thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, biotin, and folic acid (folacin). Growth response of each organism under hyperbaric helium was compared with that under 80% He-20% O2 and other He-O2 gas mixtures at atmospheric pressure, and with response in air at atmospheric pressure. For five of the six vitamins, no differences in response were observed. Growth response of Streptococcus faecalis to growth-limiting concentrations of folic acid was depressed during cultivation under He-O2 at 69 ATA. It is concluded that growth response of the organism is repressed by hyperbaric helium as a result of interference with uptake or utilization of the vitamin.
The effects of conventional food and of formula diet on gut microflora were tested in six healthy persons. In comparison with conventional food, the total gut microflora concentrations slightly increased during formula diet with oligosaccharides. During the periods of formula diet rich in sucrose of maltose, total flora concentrations declined. These changes of total gut microflora were especially caused by the increase and decrease of the enterococci and enterobacteria, the bacteroides showing rather small changes. The concentrations of lactobacteria, sporeforming bacilli and yeasts decreased rapidly with formula diet and did not increase again until normal food was supplied.
Bacterial strains (106 in toto) isolated from different foods and identified as Lactobacillus plantarum were screened for antagonistic activities against other bacteria under conditions which eliminated the effects of organic acids and hydrogen peroxide. Five isolates were shown to be bacteriocin producers, and the bacteriocins, on the basis of their host range inhibition and cross inhibition were all different. The bacteriocins were preliminarily characterized by temperature stability, sensitivity to proteolytic, lipolytic and glycolytic enzymes and precipitation with ammonium sulphate.
A study was undertaken to determine the interrelation between premortal stress and endogenic contamination. In 370 broilers the influence of transport, of a 48-h rest period and of an additional heat stress on the bacterial translocation was investigated. Even the normal transportation caused a contamination rate of nearly 50 per cent. 10 per cent of the transported animals suffered from a bacteriaemia induced by stress. The control group showed a significantly lower contamination rate. The rest time reduced the frequency of contamination. Heat stress did not have an influence on the contamination rate. The conclusion is that stress is aggravating the microbial risk for the consumer of poultry meat. Further research is necessary for characterizing the process of endogenic contamination.
