Soft-x-ray laser interferometry of a pinch discharge using a tabletop laser.

We have used a tabletop soft-x-ray laser and a wave-front division interferometer to probe the plasma of a pinch discharge. A very compact capillary discharge-pumped Ne-like Ar laser emitting at 46.9 nm was combined with a wave division interferometer based on Lloyd's mirror and Sc-Si multilayer-coated optics to map the electron density in the cathode region of the discharge. This demonstration of the use of tabletop soft-x-ray laser in plasma interferometry could lead to the widespread use of these lasers in the diagnostics of dense plasmas.

Chirped pulse reflectivity and frequency domain interferometry in laser driven shock experiments.

We show the simultaneous applicability of the frequency domain interferometry and the chirped pulse reflectometry techniques to measure shock parameters. The experiment has been realized with the laser at the Laboratoire pour l'Utilisation des Lasers Intenses (LULI) with a 550-ps pulse duration and an intensity on target approximately 5 x 10(13) W/cm(2) to produce a shock in a layered aluminum-fused silica target. A second low energy, partially compressed chirped probe beam was used to irradiate the target rear side and the reflected light has been analyzed with a spectrometer, achieving a temporal resolution of the order of 1 ps.

Polarization switching in a columnar liquid crystalline urea as studied by optical second-harmonic generation interferometry.

The polar order and its switching characteristics have been investigated by means of optical second-harmonic generation interferometry in a compound N, N'-bis(3,4,5-trialkoxylphenyl)urea (R=n- C16 H33) being connected by intermolecular hydrogen bondings to form a columnar liquid crystalline phase. The polar structure is formed along the column by applying an electric field and is cooperatively switched by reversing the field. The polar order is relaxed to a nonpolar state within a few milliseconds by terminating the field. No macroscopic polar order exists at least in a range of a visible wavelength scale in the absence of a field.

Equivalence of the virtual-source method and wave-field deconvolution in seismic interferometry.

Seismic interferometry and the virtual-source method are related approaches for extracting the Green's function that accounts for wave propagation between receivers by making suitable combinations of the waves recorded at these two receivers. These waves can either be excited by active, controlled, sources, or by natural incoherent sources. We compare this technique with the deconvolution of the wave field recorded at different receivers. We show that the deconvolved wave field is a solution of the same wave equation as that for the physical system, but that the deconvolved wave forms may satisfy different boundary conditions than those of the original system. We apply this deconvolution approach to the wave motion recorded at various levels in a building after an earthquake, and show how to extract the building response for different boundary conditions. Extracting the response of the system with different boundary conditions can be used to enhance, or suppress, the normal-mode response. In seismic exploration this principle can be used for the suppression of surface-related multiples.

Femtosecond interferometry of propagation of a laminar ionization front in a gas.

We use optical interferometry to investigate ultrafast ionization induced by an intense, ultrashort laser pulse propagating in a helium gas. Besides standard phase shift information, our interferograms show a localized region of fringe visibility depletion (FVD) that moves along the laser propagation axis at luminal velocity. We find that such a loss of visibility can be quantitatively explained by the ultrafast change of refractive index due to the field ionization of the gas in the laser pulse width. We demonstrate that by combining the post facto phase shift distribution with the probe pulse transit effect in the ionizing region, the analysis of the observed FVD yields significant information on the ultrafast dynamics of propagation of the ionization front in the gas.

Bombarding energy dependence of pi(-) interferometry at the brookhaven AGS

We present the first excitation function of pi(-) intensity interferometry at Alternating Gradient Synchrotron (AGS) energies (2-8 A GeV). The sensitivity of the multidimensional correlation functions to the geometry and dynamics of the pion-emitting system provides a stringent test of transport models of heavy ion collisions. Detailed comparisons with a realistic transport model, both with and without an explicit nuclear mean field, suggest that the beam energy evolution in the reaction dynamics is different in the model than in the data. A significantly increased pi(-) emission time scale, which has been suggested as a signal of the onset of the transition to quark-gluon plasma, is not observed.

Electron correlations observed through intensity interferometry

Intensity interferometry was applied to study electron correlations in doubly ionizing ion-atom collisions. In this method, the probability to find two electrons emitted in the same double ionization event with a certain momentum difference is compared to the corresponding probability for two uncorrelated electrons from two independent events. The ratio of both probabilities, the so-called correlation function, is found to sensitively reveal electron correlation effects, but it is rather insensitive to the collision dynamics.

Geometric phases for mixed states in interferometry.

We provide a physical prescription based on interferometry for introducing the total phase of a mixed state undergoing unitary evolution, which has been an elusive concept in the past. We define the parallel transport condition that provides a connection form for obtaining the geometric phase for mixed states. The expression for the geometric phase for mixed state reduces to well known formulas in the pure state case when a system undergoes noncyclic and unitary quantum evolution.

Time-domain atom interferometry across the threshold for Bose-Einstein condensation.

We have performed time-domain interferometry experiments with matter waves trapped in a harmonic potential above and below the Bose-Einstein phase transition, by means of the method of separated oscillating fields, with a variable time delay T. We observe the oscillations of the population between two internal Zeeman states versus the delay T to be rapidly depleted both below and slightly above Bose-Einstein condensation. We give a quantitative explanation in terms of the phase evolution due to the entanglement between the internal and external degrees of freedom.

Ablative Rayleigh-Taylor instability at short wavelengths observed with moiré interferometry.

One of the most important quantities to be measured for better understanding of the ablative Rayleigh-Taylor (RT) instability is the growth rate in the short wavelength region at which the RT instability is significantly reduced. The short wavelength ( 4.7-12 microm) RT growth rates for direct-drive targets were measured for the first time by utilizing the innovated moiré interferometry [M. Matsuoka et al., Rev. Sci. Instrum. 70, 637 (1999)]. These growth rates were reasonably well reproduced by the simulation that solves the Fokker-Planck equation for nonlocal heat transport.

Picosecond x-ray laser interferometry of dense plasmas.

We present the first results from picosecond interferometry of dense laser-produced plasmas using a soft x-ray laser. The picosecond duration and short wavelength of the 14.7 nm Ni-like Pd laser mitigates effects associated with motion blurring and refraction through millimeter-scale plasmas. This enables direct measurement of the electron-density profile to within 10 microm of the target surface. A series of high-quality two-dimensional (2D) density measurements provide unambiguous characterization of the time evolution in a fast-evolving plasma suitable for validation of existing 1D and 2D hydrodynamic codes.

Contrast interferometry using Bose-Einstein condensates to measure h/m and alpha.

The kinetic energy of an atom recoiling due to absorption of a photon was measured as a frequency, using an interferometric technique called "contrast interferometry." Optical standing wave pulses were used to create a symmetric three-path interferometer with a Bose-Einstein condensate. Its recoil phase, measurable with a single shot, varies quadratically with additional recoils and is insensitive to errors from vibrations and ac Stark shifts. We have measured the photon recoil frequency of sodium to 7 ppm precision, using a simple realization of this scheme. Plausible extensions should yield sufficient precision to attain a ppb-level determination of h/m and the fine structure constant alpha.

Partonic effects on pion interferometry at the relativistic heavy-ion collider.

Using a multiphase transport model that includes both initial partonic and final hadronic interactions, we study the pion interferometry at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider. We find that the two-pion correlation function is sensitive to the magnitude of the parton-scattering cross section, which controls the parton density at which the transition from the partonic to hadronic matter occurs. Also, the emission source of pions is non-Gaussian, leading to source radii that can be more than twice larger than the radius parameters extracted from a Gaussian fit to the correlation function.

Attosecond spectral shearing interferometry.

We show that the complete characterization of arbitrarily short isolated attosecond x-ray pulses can be achieved by applying spectral shearing interferometry to photoelectron wave packets. These wave packets are coherently produced through the photoionization of atoms by two time-delayed replicas of the x-ray pulse, and are shifted in energy with respect to each other by simultaneously applying a strong laser field. The x-ray pulse is reconstructed with the algorithm developed for optical pulses, which requires no knowledge of ionization physics. Using a 800-nm shearing field, x-ray pulses shorter than approximately 400 asec can be fully characterized.

Entanglement generation and multiparticle interferometry with neutral atoms.

We study the preparation and manipulation of states involving a small number of interacting particles. By controlling the splitting and fusing of potential wells, we show how to interconvert Mott-insulator-like and trapped BEC-like states. We also discuss the generation of "Schrödinger cat" states by splitting a microtrap and taking into practical consideration the asymmetry between the resulting wells. These schemes can be used to perform multiparticle interferometry with neutral atoms, where interference effects can be observed only when all the participating particles are measured.

High-precision molecular wave-packet interferometry with HgAr dimers.

Molecular wave-packet (WP) interferometry has been demonstrated in the A electronic state of the HgAr van der Waals complex with two time-delayed UV fs pulses at 254 nm. The interferograms of three vibrational levels in the WP's display almost 100% fringe contrast as a function of the interpulse delay tau, which is tuned with sub-10 as stability and resolution. It is clearly observed that the three interferograms show their dephasing and rephasing within a single vibrational period, allowing us to prepare arbitrary relative populations of the three levels by adjusting a single parameter tau.

Differential freeze-out and pion interferometry at RHIC from covariant transport theory.

Puzzling discrepancies between recent pion interferometry data on Au+Au reactions at square root of s=30 and 200 AGeV from RHIC and predictions based on ideal hydrodynamics are analyzed in terms of covariant parton transport theory. The discrepancies in the R(out)/R(side) ratio are significantly reduced when the finite opacity of the gluon plasma is taken into account. However, the magnitude of the radii is not well accounted for.

Measurement of the solar gravitational deflection of radio waves using geodetic very-long-baseline interferometry data, 1979-1999.

We used very-long-baseline interferometry (VLBI) to measure the deflection by the Sun of radio waves emanating from distant compact radio sources. This bending is characterized in the parametrized post-Newtonian formalism by gamma, which is unity in general relativity. Using a large geodetic VLBI data set, we obtained gamma=0.9998(3)+/-0.0004(5) (estimated standard error). We found no systematic biases from our analysis of subgroups of data.
