The level of mechanic vibrations intensity of 20 motor saws of the BK-3a type and 5 saws of the Partner R-11 type was determined and the evaluation of 460 motorsawers' vibration exposure--in case of working on these types of saws--was performed. The evaluation covered saws of various technical conditions, with which felling, cross-cutting and trimming of soft and hard timber were performed. The vibration measured exceeds 3--5 times Soviet hygienic normatives and ISO, especially in octave frequencies of 63 and 125 Hz. The intensity level of vibrations was significantly dependent on the technical conditions of the saw, activities performed with it and the hardness of timber. The evaluation of the woodcutters' exposure to vibration in a day, a year and the whole employment period was performed on the basis of the test-checking, the ammount of timber produced, fuel used for the saw and days of saw-work. Daily exposure to vibration was 2,4 +/- 1,2 hours and was of intermittent, irregular character. Motor-sawers worked with saws from 31 to 296 days a year, producing yearly from 973 to 10.503 m3 of timber as m3 of timber felled.

The adverse effect of blood-sucking dipterous insects (gadflies, gnats, black flies, midges) was determined and checked, as exerted on the working performance of draft horses working in forests; the possibilities of protecting horses with repellents were studied at the same time. The trial was conducted under field conditions in the territory of the Broumov Forest Establishment in the Náchod and Trutnov districts. A 10% water emulsion of the repellent, diethyltoluamide, was used; the horses were treated with the emulsion in a 24-hour interval. Over the seventy working days from the 1st of July to the 30th of September, 1981, the performance of the test horse increased by 153 m3 wood in the skidding operation (i. e. by 58.06%), as compared with the control group. Recalculated per horse/day, this improvement is 2.19 m3 wood and the saving of prime costs amounts to 35.50 Czechoslovak crowns. The coefficient of loss per untreated horse was 9180 crowns. The effectiveness of the costs (per each crown of the capital expended) was calculated to be 309.07 crowns. The results were statistically significant.

Salmonella senftenberg survived in sewage sludge after a single application in summer in experimental plots of 11 different forest stands between 424 and 820 days. After application of infected sludge in winter the survival times were between 104 and 350 days. Salmonelles adsorbed to germ carriers located on or below the sludge layers survived for a shorter time than those germs which were suspended into the sludge. Ascaris eggs survived not longer than between 78 and 107 days. It is therefore recommended to prohibit the utilization of infectious sewage sludges in forests and at their edges as it is handled in Switzerland. If this cannot be achieved the permission for utilization of sludge in forests should only be given if the sludge is tilled into the soil.
Undergraduate clinical training typically involves short-term "rotations" in a tertiary care health center. While such a structure is highly conducive to learning in various specialties, it is particularly limiting to the student's acquisition of the wide array of clinical abilities necessary for primary care. An alternative model is the use of a long-term preceptorship in a primary care setting. This provides training with a more representative patient population and offers a richer clinical experience. An example of this model is a Minnesota program that allows third-year undergraduate medical students to spend nine to 12 months in select primary care settings while receiving ongoing teaching visits from university faculty in major specialty areas. The model can be a legitimate alternative for clinical education of primary care physicians.

The past and presently diagnosed diseases (excluding vibration disease and occupational hearing impairment) were analysed in 1105 sawers operating combustion drive mechanic saws and in 295 controls. The greatest rate, both in the sawers and controls, was that of the diseases of respiratory tract, circulatory system and osseo -- articulo -- muscular system, nervous system and sense organs. These constituted 86% of all diseases that afflicted sawers and controls. No specific general morbidity accompanying vibration disease or occupational hearing impairment was found in the sawers exposed to noise and vibration.
