As the sum of benfluron metabolites found was only a part of the total amount applied, a search for undiscovered metabolites was undertaken in the extracts from isolated rat hepatocytes and in the bile and perfusate in the experiments with an isolated perfused rat liver. To identify the metabolites, high-performance liquid chromatography with UV spectral analysis was used, as benfluron derivatives exhibit characteristic absorption spectra. Administration of known metabolites to experimental animals and selective induction of certain metabolic pathways led to the finding of new metabolites and of the respective conjugates. Fast atom bombardment-mass spectrometry analysis was used to identify the newly found metabolites and conjugates.
Under appropriate electronic modulation, simple diazofluorene analogs recapitulate the DNA cleavage activity of kinamycin D under thiol-based reducing conditions. Achieving DNA cleavage under these reducing conditions is key to anticancer activity, as the most active compound, 1-methoxydiazofluorene, inhibits the proliferation of HeLa cells.
We report the aqueous solubilities of phenanthrene and several solid three-ring aromatic heterocycles (phenanthridine, acridine, phenazine, thianthrene, phenothiazine, phenoxathiin, phenoxazine, carbazole, dibenzofuran, dibenzothiophene, and 4,6-dimethyldibenzothiophene) at temperatures ranging from 313K to the solute melting point and at a pressure of 5MPa. The data were measured by dynamic saturation method using an in-house-assembled apparatus for pressurized hot water extraction (PHWE). The solute from a known mass of the saturated aqueous solution was transferred to an organic solvent (hexane or toluene), and the organic phase was analyzed by GC/MS. In any of the solutes, the GC/MS records did not indicate any noticeable decomposition within the temperature range of the measurements. The resultant solubilities were converted to activity coefficients of the individual solutes in saturated aqueous solutions, and the results are discussed in terms of temperature and type/number of heteroatoms.
Luminescent particles of lead carboxymethyl cellulose (Pb(CMC)2) containing salicyl fluorones (THBF), Pb(CMC)2-THBF were synthesized by the sol-gel method, using sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (NaCMC) as precursor and Pb2+ as precipitant. Pb(CMC)2-THBF can emit the intense and stable solid substrate room temperature phosphorescence (SS-RTP) on filter paper. And EDTA can chelate Pb2+ in Pb(CMC)2-THBF, causing it to decompose into aqueous soluble components PbY2-, CMC- and THBF, which can react with Ag+ to form Ag(CMC)2-THBF, causing the decrease of phosphorescence intensity. Based on the facts above, a new method for the determination of trace silver by SS-RTP quenching method was established. The linear range of this method is 8.0-40.0 fg spot(-1) (20.0-100.0 pg ml(-1)), with a detection limit (LD) of 2.2 fg spot(-1) (corresponding to a concentration range of 5.5 x 10(-13) g ml(-1)), and the regression equation of working curve is DeltaI(p) = 12.56 + 0.5527C(Ag+) (fg spot(-1), 0.4 microl spot(-1)), n = 8, r = 0.9992. This method has been applied to the determination of trace silver in human hair and tea sample with satisfactory results. The mechanism of SS-RTP emission is also discussed.

Male albino rats were given 4 ppm selenium (Se(as Na2SeO3) in the water, or 0.25% retinoic acid was added to the basal diet for 3 days. Control and treated animals were given 17 mg acetylaminofluorene (AAF)-9-14C or N-hydroxyacetylaminofluorene (NOHAAF)-9-14C/kg body wt. The administration of Se enhanced glucuronyl transferase activity by 100% and inhibited p-nitrophenol-sulfotransferase by 50%. Retinoic acid enhanced the glucuronyl transferase 37% and inhibited the p-nitrophenol-sulfotransferase by 50%. Pretreatment with Se lowered levels of both AAF and NOHAAF in liver tissue by 30%. Se administration lowered the binding of the labeled carcinogens, or metabolites thereof, to the liver DNA and tRNA.
