Sexual Abuse in Girls Aged ≤14: A Retrospective Observational Swiss Study.

INTRODUCTION: Child sexual abuse (CSA) is a critical public health concern with enduring physical and psychological consequences. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to describe the sociodemographic profiles, contextual circumstances, and clinical findings of reported CSA cases involving girls aged ≤14, recorded between 2018 and 2021 at two university hospitals in Switzerland: Lausanne University Hospital (Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Vaudois - CHUV) and Geneva University Hospitals (Hôpitaux Universitaires de Genève - HUG) to inform prevention and intervention strategies. METHODS: This retrospective observational study included 95 cases identified through forensic consultations at CHUV and HUG. All eligible cases recorded between 2018 and 2021 were analyzed. Collected data included sociodemographic characteristics, assault circumstances, perpetrator-victim relationship, and clinical findings. RESULTS: The median age of children exposed to sexual assault was 7 years (IQR 4-14). Intra-familial abuse predominated among premenarcheal girls (41.7%), while postmenarcheal girls were more frequently assaulted by non-familial perpetrators (76.2%) and experienced higher rates of physical violence (47.6%). Genital lesions were documented in 41% of cases, with a higher prevalence among younger patients, and were rarely specific to CSA. CONCLUSION: This study provides a detailed descriptive overview of CSA cases involving girls aged ≤14 in two Swiss cantons. It highlights age-related patterns in perpetrator profiles, assault characteristics, and clinical findings. Prevention strategies should be age-specific, addressing intra-familial risk in younger children and peer-related or situational vulnerabilities in adolescents. These findings support the implementation of standardized forensic practices, improved surveillance systems, and targeted prevention and care strategies.

Dispositional optimism and open-label placebo responses in hair cortisol concentrations and psychological distress-A randomized controlled trial.

Open-label placebo (OLP) treatments show beneficial effects on various health-related outcomes, but studies investigating OLP effects on physiological measures remain scarce. This randomized controlled trial examined the effect of a 4-week OLP intervention on psychological distress and hair cortisol concentrations (HCC) in 202 healthy university students preparing for mandatory oral exams and whether dispositional optimism moderates the OLP effects. Participants were randomly assigned to an OLP or control group. Psychological distress was repeatedly assessed via negative affect, test anxiety, and subjective stress. HCC was measured before and within the intervention. Treatment expectations were additionally examined in interaction with optimism. Results show that OLPs significantly reduced psychological distress and HCC compared to the controls. Optimism moderated the OLP effect on HCC, with less optimistic individuals demonstrating the strongest reduction, independent of expectation. Optimism did not moderate OLP effects in psychological distress. However, the OLP effect on psychological distress depended on the three-way interaction of group, optimism, and expectation. The results suggest that OLPs alleviate the psychophysiological impact of a real-life stressor and indicate that optimism and expectation differently shape psychological and physiological OLP responses. These findings are discussed within the framework of the interactionist perspective.

Could the preoperative urethral curve be used to predict immediate urinary continence following Retzius-sparing robot-assisted radical prostatectomy? A retrospective multi-center study.

PURPOSE: Immediate urinary continence (UC) recovery following Retzius-sparing robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RS-RARP) remains highly variable, highlighting the need for reliable preoperative prediction. We aimed to develop and validate models to identify patients likely to achieve immediate UC recovery following RS-RARP. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 580 prostate cancer patients who underwent RS-RARP from four medical centers were assigned to a training set (n=348), an internal validation set (n=103) and an external validation set (n=129). Independent predictors were identified through univariate analysis and LASSO regression. A nomogram was constructed using multivariate logistic regression. Its performance was evaluated with receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, calibration curves, and decision curve analysis. RESULTS: Immediate UC recovery was observed in 84.5% (294/348) of patients in the training cohort, 80.6% (83/103) in the internal validation cohort, and 81.4% (105/129) in the external validation cohort, respectively. Multivariate analysis identified membranous urethral length (MUL) (OR=1.23, P=0.029) and urethral curvature (OR=2.84, P<0.001) as independent predictors, while prostate volume (PV) (OR=0.84, P <0.001) as a protective factor. The nomogram integrating MUL, PV, and urethral curvature demonstrated superior predictive accuracy, with an AUC of 0.87 (95% CI, 0.83-0.91) in the training cohort. The bootstrap-corrected calibration slope was 0.96, and the Brier score was 0.08.&#xa0;Calibration curves and decision curve analysis confirmed the predictive accuracy and clinical utility of the nomogram. CONCLUSIONS: Our study introduces a novel quantitative method for assessing urethral curvature. The mpMRI-based model, integrating urethral curvature and prostate spatial configuration, offers enhanced predictive accuracy for postoperative immediate UC recovery.

Behind the Curtain of Care. Nurses' Experiences Providing Care to Consumers With Alcohol and Other Drug Issues: A Qualitative Scoping Review.

AIM: To scope and synthesise qualitative literature relating to nurses' experiences of providing care to consumers with alcohol and other drug issues and explore how meaning is constructed in practice. DESIGN: Scoping review. METHODS: A scoping review was conducted following Arksey and O'Malley's framework. Findings were analysed using thematic analysis. DATA SOURCES: Systematic searches were conducted between September and November 2025 across Medline, Emcare, CINAHL and Google Scholar, using controlled vocabulary and keywords relevant to nurses' experiences of providing care to consumers with alcohol and other drug issues. RESULTS: Twenty-four studies from 12 countries were included. Seven themes were identified: emotional aspects of care, education, training and skills in practice, the spectrum of stigma, ethical issues in professional practice, navigating pain management, limited support, and how meaning is constructed in practice. CONCLUSION: Nurses' experiences of providing care to consumers with alcohol and other drug issues are shaped by multiple intersecting factors influencing care delivery and professional practice. Further research is needed to examine how workplace culture, language and interpersonal interactions influence healthcare experiences, and inform education, service development and support needs. Efficacy and Safety of the C3 Inhibitor Pegcetacoplan in Paroxysmal Nocturnal Hemoglobinuria: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of the complement C3 inhibitor pegcetacoplan in patients with paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH). METHODS: PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library were systematically searched for studies reporting pegcetacoplan use in PNH. Outcomes included transfusion-requirement, hemoglobin normalization, mean hemoglobin levels, lactate dehydrogenase normalization, reticulocyte count normalization, and safety endpoints. Pooled proportions with 95% confidence intervals were calculated using random-effects models, and heterogeneity was assessed using the I2 statistic. RESULTS: Five studies comprising 271 patients were included. Transfusion avoidance was observed in 80.6% of patients, with a pooled transfusion-requirement rate of 19.4%. LDH normalization occurred in 68.5% of patients (I2&#x2009;=&#x2009;0%). Hemoglobin normalization was observed in 42.9%, while reticulocyte count normalization reached 66%. Any-grade adverse events occurred in 83.5% of patients, most commonly pyrexia, headache, and dizziness. Serious adverse events occurred in 16.6%, decreasing to 12% after sensitivity analysis. Breakthrough hemolysis was reported in 14.8%, and infections in 17%. CONCLUSION: Pegcetacoplan demonstrates consistent efficacy signals across key hematologic endpoints and an acceptable safety profile, supporting its potential role as an important therapeutic option, particularly in patients with persistent extravascular hemolysis despite C5 inhibition.

Influenza as a Less Commonly Recognized Cause of Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis: A Systematic Review of Case Reports and Case Series.

Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is a life-threatening hyper-inflammatory condition that can be triggered by viral infections. However, influenza is not commonly recognized as a cause of HLH, and there is no comprehensive synthesis of influenza-associated HLH in the literature to guide clinicians. We conducted a systematic search of Pubmed and Embase to identify case reports and case series on influenza-associated HLH, and included 29 articles involving 47 patients. Their age ranged from 2&#x2009;months to 72&#x2009;years. 67% were males. Influenza A accounted for 91.3% of the cases, predominantly H1N1 (90.2%). All patients had fever, 60% had anemia, 69.7% had thrombocytopenia, 46.6% had leukopenia, 61.3% had splenomegaly, 71.4% had hypertriglyceridemia, and 94.7% had elevated ferritin levels. 97.6% had hemophagocytosis on biopsy. Antiviral therapy was administered in 89.5% of patients. HLH-directed therapy included corticosteroids (77%), intravenous immunoglobulin (36%), and etoposide (23.1%). Intensive care was required in 95.2% of cases. Overall survival was 53.2%. Survival rate was 50% among patients who received either antiviral therapy alone or HLH-directed therapy alone, compared with 65.4% among those who received both. Further studies are necessary to establish standardized diagnostic and therapeutic protocols for influenza-associated HLH.

Evaluating the pathogenic significance of unique chromosomal variants in craniosynostosis using patient-derived induced pluripotent stem cells and mouse modelling.

PURPOSE: Unravelling causal links between unique structural/copy-number variants (SV/CNV) and associated phenotypes is essential for correct genetic counselling. We investigated two families in which patients with craniosynostosis had SV/CNV potentially dysregulating a fibroblast growth factor (FGF)-encoding gene; a 730 kb dup(4)(q21.21) including FGF5; and a complex 568 kb interspersed 13q12.11 duplication, located 841 kb from FGF9. METHODS: We combined bioinformatic predictions of altered topologically-associating domain (TAD) structure, with experimental analysis (RNA- and ATAC- [assay for transposase-accessible chromatin] sequencing) of patient induced pluripotent stem cell lines (iPSCs) differentiated to neural crest (NCC) and osteoprogenitor (OPC) identities. For the dup(4)(q21.21) we generated a mouse bearing an equivalent rearrangement using CRISPR-Cas9 targeting. RESULTS: TAD analysis suggested potential dysregulation of the FGF5/FGF9 gene by bringing it into a novel genomic milieu. The RNA- and ATAC-seq assays demonstrated FGF5/FGF9 upregulation (2.7-18x) and local opening of chromatin, in 3/4 cell lines. For the dup(4)(q21.21), a causal role was supported by the mouse model, whereas interpretation of the 13q12.11 SV is confounded by a co-existing FOXP2 pathogenic variant. CONCLUSION: Patient iPSC-differentiated NCC and OPC lines, combined with TAD-based modelling to generate testable functional hypotheses, provide valuable functional evidence when evaluating causation of unique SV/CNV in craniosynostosis.

The cold case of state transition 7 (stt7) mutants of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, solved by whole-genome sequencing.

The process of State Transitions (ST) corresponds to an STT7 kinase-driven redistribution of the transmembrane LHCII antenna proteins between Photosystem II (PSII) and Photosystem I (PSI), which results from changes in their phosphorylation state. For the past two decades, two LHCII-kinase mutants, stt7-1 and stt7-9, have been instrumental in the study of STs in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, the former being a null mutant for the kinase but quasi-sterile in crosses, while the latter, although fertile, has a leaky phenotype. Using long-read sequencing, this study further characterized the genetic lesions of the stt7 mutant strains through whole-genome reconstruction and de novo chromosome assembly. In addition, two new stt7 null mutants were generated, one derived by crosses from the original stt7-1 and one obtained by Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats (CRISPR)-associated protein 9 (Cas9) technology. This work provides a comprehensive genomic characterization of the original stt7-1 null mutant, revealing extensive chromosomal rearrangements and high levels of aneuploidy, associated with increased cell size and meiotic dysfunction. Reassessment of their physiology and genetic backgrounds highlights the need for caution in interpreting genetic information. We thus produced more reliable null mutants for the LHCII-kinase, amenable to genetic crosses for the study of STs in a variety of genetic backgrounds.

Primary pulmonary salivary gland-type tumors in cytopathology practice: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Primary pulmonary salivary gland-type tumors (PSGTs) are rare but clinically significant tumors that originate from the submucosal glands of the tracheobronchial tree. Cytologic samples taken during bronchoscopy are a key component of preoperative evaluation. However, cytologic diagnosis remains challenging because of the submucosal growth and morphologic overlap of PSGTs. In addition, current knowledge of the cytohistologic correlation of PSGTs is fragmented. The objective of this study was to assess the effectiveness of cytologic diagnoses of PSGTs. METHODS: A comprehensive, systematic literature search of the PubMed database was conducted to identify studies with cytologic and histologic diagnoses of PSGTs. Comprehensive data on diagnostic and clinical factors, when available, were collected for all individual patients. The data were tabulated in Microsoft Excel and analyzed using OpenMeta (Analyst) software. RESULTS: In total, 49 studies comprising 106 patients were identified. Final cytohistologic concordance was demonstrated in 48.1% of cases. Fine-needle aspiration showed the highest sensitivity (75.0%), followed by bronchial/tracheal washing (38.1%), and bronchial brushing (34.2%). Adenoid cystic carcinoma was the most common histologic subtype, accounting for 67 cases, followed by mucoepidermoid carcinoma, which accounted for 27 cases. CONCLUSIONS: The cytologic diagnosis of rare PSGTs remains challenging. Overall, cytohistologic concordance was 48.1%. However, fine-needle aspiration demonstrated greater diagnostic accuracy than exfoliative cytology and may facilitate a more accurate preoperative assessment.

Mechanisms of Hematopoietic Stem Cell Aging and Emerging Rejuvenation Strategies.

Hematopoietic stem cell (HSCs) aging is a complex biological process driven by both cell-intrinsic alterations and extrinsic cues from the bone marrow niche. Understanding these mechanisms is critical for developing therapies against aging-related hematopoietic disorders. This review synthesizes recent advances in the molecular mechanisms underlying HSCs aging, including microenvironmental aging, genomic instability, epigenetic dysregulation, mitochondrial dysfunction, and aberrant nuclear mechanotransduction. We summarize that the functional decline of HSCs during aging drives a compensatory expansion of the phenotypically defined stem cell pool, leading to an aberrant increase in cell number. We also highlight aging-associated HSCs heterogeneity, including CD150high and P-selectin-positive subsets that enrich for myeloid-biased or functionally compromised HSCs states while emphasizing that surface phenotype alone may not fully indicate functional rejuvenation. Finally, we discuss emerging rejuvenation strategies-including targeting myeloid-biased HSCs, modulating inflammatory pathways, and implementing epigenetic or metabolic interventions-supported by cutting-edge technologies such as single-cell multi-omics, gene editing, and computational modeling. These approaches hold promise for counteracting age-related hematopoietic decline and restoring immune competence.

Prevalence of Breastfeeding in Infants With Down Syndrome: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

AIM: To estimate the prevalence of breastfeeding-overall, exclusive, partial and depending on infants' age-in infants with Down syndrome, and to investigate associated factors. METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted in Medline, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Embase, CINAHL and SciELO up to 1 August 2024. Original articles that estimated the prevalence of breastfeeding in infants with Down syndrome, written in French, English or Spanish, were included. Study quality was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) scale. Meta-analyses were performed for breastfeeding outcomes and meta-regression explored heterogeneity. The review was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42021278019). RESULTS: Twenty-six studies (3463 infants) were included. The estimated prevalence of overall breastfeeding regardless of duration was 71.6% (95% CI [60.3; 80.7]; 25 studies, 3351 infants) with high heterogeneity, I2&#x2009;=&#x2009;94%. The estimated prevalence of exclusive breastfeeding was 38.4% (95% CI [22.4; 57.3]; 10 studies, 1099 infants). No factor assessed in meta-regression was significantly associated with overall breastfeeding. CONCLUSION: The estimated breastfeeding prevalence in infants with Down syndrome is similar to that reported in the general population, despite high heterogeneity. Further studies using standardised methodology to assess breastfeeding barriers and facilitators in the context of Down syndrome would allow us to improve support for breastfeeding.

Sensor-based measures of knee brace adherence have low agreement with self-report methods: A multi-measure study among knee osteoarthritis patients.

OBJECTIVE: To explore agreement between self-report and objectively measured adherence to brace wearing by patients with knee osteoarthritis. METHOD: A single-arm observational analysis nested within the PROP OA randomised controlled trial (ISRCTN28555470). Of 237 adults with symptomatic knee osteoarthritis randomised to brace treatment, 60 were included in this sub-study investigating three different methods of assessing knee brace wear time over 26 weeks: 1. Self-report questionnaires (SRQ) at 12 weeks and 26 weeks; 2. Short message service (SMS) questions (days worn in past week, typical hours per day when worn) administered from week 1 to week 24; 3. A skin temperature sensor embedded in the brace, sampling every 10&#x202f;min for 26 weeks. The presence and reason for the sensor were concealed from participants. The estimated proportion of participants meeting "minimum brace use", defined a priori as &#x2265;1&#x202f;h on &#x2265;2 days in past week, was described for each measurement method, overall and by brace type (unloader, neutral). For temperature sensor measurements, time spent above 24&#xb0;C and time spent above 25&#xb0;C were used. Agreement between the measures was summarised by percentage agreement and kappa (&#x138;). RESULTS: The estimated proportions of participants meeting "minimum brace use" at 12 weeks were 83% (SRQ), 83% (SMS), 60% and 58% (temperature sensor, 24&#xb0;C and 25&#xb0;C thresholds, respectively). At 26 weeks, the corresponding estimates reduced to 72%, 71% (SMS at 24 weeks), 43% and 37%. Sensor data suggested the sharpest decline in brace use occurred within the first 12 weeks. Agreement between self-report measures was higher than between self-report measures and sensor (SRQ vs SMS at 12 weeks: 92% agreement, &#x138;=0.67 (95%CI: 0.34, 1.00); SRQ vs Sensor at 12 weeks: 74%, 0.35 (0.10, 0.60); SMS vs Sens at 12 weeks: 76%, 0.36 (0.05, 0.66). Agreement between all measurement methods reduced at 26 weeks. CONCLUSIONS: This novel use of a temperature sensor to monitor brace adherence in knee osteoarthritis indicates that self-report adherence substantially overestimates knee brace wearing time, with implications for clinical trials and practice.

Artificial Intelligence Technologies in Nursing Clinical Decision-Making: An Umbrella Review.

AIM: To describe contemporary peer-reviewed literature on artificial intelligence in nurses' clinical decision-making. METHODS: An umbrella review of literature reviews. DATA SOURCES: Four major databases were searched for reviews published between 2019 and 2024. RESULTS: Sixteen literature reviews reported on 965 nursing artificial intelligence primary studies. The studies focused on technology development and emerging performance evaluations, whilst real-world testing or implementation in nursing clinical settings was rare. Rigorous comparative analyses were lacking. While artificial intelligence demonstrates promise in decision-making, challenges such as a lack of controlled studies, algorithmic bias, limited reproducibility and insufficient clinical trials hinder its practical impact. Ethical concerns, transparency and patient data privacy issues pose barriers to AI integration in nursing practice. Ethical and legal guidelines for patient privacy are needed and should be taught along with AI literacy training for nurses. CONCLUSIONS: Artificial intelligence has the potential to enhance clinical nursing decision-making, although evidence is limited by too few examples of nurse participation during development. Underutilisation in administrative nursing functions hinders implementation. Nurses should assume a central role in the design and development of AI applications to ensure that these technologies address the realities of nursing practice. With such improvements, artificial intelligence can transform nursing practice, improve nurses' clinical decision-making and ultimately enhance consumer healthcare outcomes. Implementation of Mobile Health Intervention Targeting Belongingness and Burdensomeness: An Ecological Momentary Assessment Study of Self-Injurious Thoughts and Behaviors in LGBTQ+ Individuals.

OBJECTIVE: The goal of this paper was to test a mobile health intervention designed to reduce self-injurious thoughts and behaviors in LGBTQ+ individuals. The intervention consisted of brief messages aimed at increasing feelings of belongingness and meaning. METHOD: We recruited LGBTQ+ individuals (N&#x2009;=&#x2009;55) with past-month self-injurious thoughts and/or behaviors. Participants completed 14&#x2009;days of ecological momentary assessment (EMA) of minority stress, thwarted belongingness, perceived burdensomeness, and self-injurious thoughts and behaviors. Then, participants were randomly assigned to receive brief messages designed to instill belongingness and meaning/purpose, or no intervention for 14&#x2009;days. Then, participants completed an additional 14&#x2009;days of EMA. RESULTS: Our results showed that participants in the control condition had significant increases in self-injurious thoughts and planning over time, whereas those in the intervention condition showed no significant change. For self-injurious behavior, thwarted belongingness, and perceived burdensomeness, there were significant decreases in the intervention condition, but no changes in the control condition. CONCLUSIONS: These results provide support for the interpersonal theory of suicide and indicate a potentially scalable mobile health intervention. PUBLIC HEALTH SIGNIFICANCE: This paper found evidence that a brief mobile health intervention reduced suicidal and non-suicidal self-injurious thoughts and behaviors among LGBTQ+ individuals.

Plant species identification by genome skimming across the vascular plant tree of life.

Accurate species identification is essential for biodiversity conservation and sustainable use, yet standard plant DNA barcoding often fails to achieve species-level resolution. We present a large-scale empirical evaluation of genome skimming as a tool to improve plant species discrimination. Using standardised data from 1969 individuals representing 475 species from 32 genera across major lineages of the vascular plant tree of life, we compare conventional plastid + internal transcribed spacer (ITS) barcodes with genome skimming approaches. Standard barcoding using rbcL, matK, trnH-psbA and ITS resolved about half of species (49.3%), with six genera showing <&#x2009;25% species discrimination. By contrast, genome skimming enabled the recovery of complete plastid genomes, yielding 57.6% species discrimination. It also generated sufficient nuclear genomic data for additional resolution from k-mer analysis, achieving 66.8% species discrimination - an average gain of 17.5% over standard barcodes - while eliminating cases of extreme failure (<&#x2009;25% resolution). The recovery of complete plastomes and ribosomal DNAs from genome skims also ensures backward compatibility with existing barcode datasets. Our results demonstrate that genome skimming provides data that substantially improves species-level resolution across diverse plant lineages and offers a scalable, high-throughput approach for building comprehensive reference resources to support global biodiversity initiatives.

Biliary Cirrhosis in Myhre Syndrome: The First Case Report of Liver Transplantation and a Review of Reported Hepatic Findings.

Myhre syndrome is a rare autosomal-dominant disorder caused by gain-of-function pathogenic variants in SMAD4 and is now recognized as a progressive multisystem fibrotic disease. Although transforming growth factor-&#x3b2; (TGF-&#x3b2;) signaling plays a central role in hepatic fibrogenesis, hepatobiliary involvement in Myhre syndrome has not been systematically evaluated. We report the first case of Myhre syndrome complicated by rapidly progressive biliary cirrhosis requiring liver transplantation in a 15-year-old male with a confirmed SMAD4 p.Ile500Val variant. Following an infectious episode, the patient developed severe cholestasis with imaging and histopathologic findings consistent with fibro-obliterative cholangiopathy, ultimately necessitating living donor liver transplantation. A systematic review of 55 published reports comprising 217 patients with Myhre syndrome revealed that hepatic evaluation was rarely performed and that previously reported liver abnormalities were mild and secondary, most commonly related to right heart dysfunction or metabolic disease, with no prior cases of progressive biliary fibrosis. This case suggests that dysregulated SMAD4-TGF-&#x3b2; signaling may predispose selected organs to fibro-obliterative injury and that infection-driven inflammation may act as a critical trigger for hepatic fibrosis in Myhre syndrome, expanding the recognized spectrum of organ involvement in this disorder.

Divergent trajectories of genome architecture and chromosome evolution in ferns and angiosperms.

Ferns and angiosperms represent the two largest vascular plant lineages but exhibit striking genomic and ecological contrasts. We investigated whether differences in genome size, chromosome architecture, GC content, and stomatal traits reveal divergent evolutionary trajectories between these lineages. We assembled the most comprehensive dataset to date, integrating genome size, chromosome number and size, GC content, and stomatal traits for over 1100 fern species and compared it with an extensive angiosperm dataset. Ferns exhibited markedly lower variability and c. 16-fold slower rates of chromosome size evolution than angiosperms. A persistent positive relationship between genome size and chromosome number in ferns suggests limited cytological post-polyploid diploidization. While ferns generally possess larger stomata, this difference disappears after accounting for genome size, indicating that nucleotypic constraints, rather than lineage-specific physiology, dictate stomatal dimensions. Both groups share a unimodal GC-genome size relationship peaking at c. 14 Gbp. Larger fern chromosomes imply lower genome-wide recombination rates, potentially limiting genetic reshuffling and adaptive potential. Our results highlight fundamentally divergent evolutionary trajectories, likely shaped by meiotic symmetry in ferns and meiotic asymmetry, possibly centromere drive, and post-polyploid diploidization in angiosperms, defining the functional and genomic landscapes of these lineages across deep evolutionary timescales.

Proteomics in environmental pollution research: Advances, challenges, and future directions.

Environmental proteomics has emerged as a powerful approach for elucidating the molecular mechanisms underlying pollutant-induced biological effects. Although this field has developed rapidly, the systematic review of recent proteomics applications in environmental pollution research remains limited. This review explored the emerging roles of toxicoproteomics in biomarker discovery and mechanistic elucidation, as well as ecotoxicoproteomics in ecological risk assessment and bioremediation strategies. Here, we review the field, highlighting recent trends such as the integration of proteomics with genomics, transcriptomics, and metabolomics to provide a comprehensive view of biological responses to environmental stressors. We further discuss the growing application of artificial intelligence in improving proteomics data interpretation and accelerating biomarker discovery. In addition, recent technological advances in environmental proteomics are highlighted, including next-generation tissue microarray proteomics, nanoscale proteomics, single-cell proteomics, and spatial proteomics. Despite its potential, proteomics faces challenges, such as high operational costs, computational complexity in analysis, and technical limitations in low-abundance protein detection. We propose that the convergence of proteomics with artificial intelligence and multi-omics approaches offers promising solutions to these challenges, enhancing the practical application of proteomics in environmental monitoring and risk assessment.
