The "AQUASCOPE" simplified model for predicting 89,90Sr, 131I, and 134,137Cs in surface waters after a large-scale radioactive fallout.

Simplified dynamic models have been developed for predicting the concentrations of radiocesium, radiostrontium, and I in surface waters and freshwater fish following a large-scale radioactive fallout. The models are intended to give averaged estimates for radionuclides in water bodies and in fish for all times after a radioactive fallout event. The models are parameterized using empirical data collected for many lakes and rivers in Belarus, Russia, Ukraine, UK, Finland, Italy, The Netherlands, and Germany. These measurements span a long time period after fallout from atmospheric nuclear weapons testing and following the Chernobyl accident. The models thus developed were tested against independent measurements from the Kiev Reservoir and Chernobyl Cooling Pond (Ukraine) and the Sozh River (Belarus) after the Chernobyl accident, from Lake Uruskul (Russia), following the Kyshtym accident in 1957, and from Haweswater Reservoir (UK), following atmospheric nuclear weapons testing. The AQUASCOPE models (implemented in EXCEL spreadsheets) and model documentation are available free of charge from the corresponding author.

Phytochrome-mediated germination of very sensitive oospores.

The light receptor and its mode of operation were studied in photosensitive oospores of Nitella furcata subsp. megacarpa (Allen emend. Wood). Brief pulses of light activated maximal germination of post-secondary dormant oospores removed from lake sediments. Fluence response data at 12 wavelengths were used to construct an action spectrum for germination. The shape of the action spectrum with its maximum at 669 nm provides evidence for the involvement of phytochrome. Germination was induced with photon fluences that established as little as 0.01% of the phytochrome in the far red-absorbing form, which suggests that phytochrome was operating in the very low-fluence response mode. The functioning of phytochrome in the very low-fluence response mode in Nitella is similar to that in higher plants.

Mercury in aquatic sediments and soils from Croatia.

Mercury is one of the most toxic and hazardous pollutant which occurs in the environment in different chemical forms, of which methylmercury is the most dangerous. Recently it was recognised that long-term anthropogenic inputs of mercury into environment resulted in the global mercury pollution and it was concluded that action should be taken to quantify the pollution sources and reduce human-generated releases of mercury. This paper presents new data on mercury levels in aquatic sediments from about 15 Croatian rivers, lakes and estuaries. It also brings data on mercury concentrations in soils from eight different regions of Croatia. Distribution of mercury species is discussed in more details for the Sava River, the Krka estuary and the Kastela Bay on the eastern Adriatic coast. Results show that sediments and soils from Croatia are generally not contaminated by mercury, except for some rivers and coastal locations under direct anthropogenic influence.

Acute mountain sickness in the Southern Alps of New Zealand.

AIM: To assess the incidence and impact of acute mountain sickness in the Southern Alps of New Zealand. METHODS: Over a 22 month period, mountaineers in the Mount Cook region were asked to complete a questionnaire at the completion of their climbing excursions. The questionnaire recorded demographic data and incorporated the Lake Louise scoring system to assess the presence of acute mountain sickness. RESULTS: Of the 114 subjects who completed the questionnaire, 30 (26%) developed acute mountain sickness. The incidence was higher amongst those who slept above 2500 m (50%). Of those with acute mountain sickness, 33% reported that their symptoms resulted in no reduction in activity, while 13% reported a moderate or severe reduction in activity. CONCLUSION: Mountaineers climbing in New Zealand's Southern Alps should be aware of the risk of acute mountain sickness, especially for those sleeping above 2500 m.

Bioaccumulation of mercury in pelagic freshwater food webs.

Current paradigms regarding the bioaccumulation of mercury are rooted in observations that monomethyl mercury (meHg) biomagnifies along pelagic food chains. However, mechanisms regulating the formation of meHg, its initial incorporation at the base of pelagic food chains, and its subsequent trophic transfer remain controversial. Here we use field data from 15 northern Wisconsin lakes, equilibrium aqueous speciation modeling, and statistical modeling to revisit several hypotheses about the uptake, distribution, and fate of inorganic Hg (HgII) and meHg in aquatic biota. Our field data comprise determinations of total Hg (HgT) and meHg in surface waters, sediments, microseston, zooplankton, and small fish in each of the study lakes. For these lake waters, strong positive correlations between DOC and aqueous concentrations of mercury along with negative correlations between DOC and the seston-water partitioning of mercury indicate that organic ligands bind HgII and meHg strongly enough to dominate their apparent aqueous speciation. In the microseston, zooplankton and fish, meHg concentrations and bioaccumulation factors (BAFs) increased with increasing trophic level while biotic concentrations of HgII decreased--indicating that meHg was indeed the biomagnified species of mercury. For all trophic levels, meHg concentrations varied positively with the calculated aqueous concentration of meHg+ (free ion), especially when coupled with pH, or meHgOH (hydroxide) species but not with meHgCl0, the neutral chloride complex. These findings suggest that: (1) the passive uptake of meHg does not control bioaccumulation at the base of aquatic food webs in nature (i.e. phyto- and bacterioplankton); (2) correlation with pH and DOC largely reflect the supply and bioavailability of meHg to lower trophic levels; and (3) meHg concentrations at higher trophic levels reflect uptake at low trophic levels and other factors, such as diet and growth. Low concentrations of meHg in surficial sediments indicate that the fates of biotic HgII and meHg are different. Most biotic meHg is demethylated rather than buried in lake sediments.

Radioactivity in the Great Lakes.

Studies of radioactivity in the Laurentian Great Lakes are reviewed to evaluate the impact of radionuclide dissemination on the world's foremost freshwater aquatic ecosystem. The status of radiologically-degraded areas is also reported. Significant amounts of radioactivity are stored in the basin, which has numerous nuclear reactors as well as uranium mine waste areas. The prevailing low levels of artificially-produced radionuclides, arising largely from previous fallout inputs, provide very little radiation dose to the area residents consuming lake water. The interlake transport of radionuclides is adequately described by existing models, though some refinement of the source term is needed. Revised estimates of fallout over each lake are given, but no data are available to estimate drainage basin contributions. Only limited information is available on the dispersal of radioactive pollutants. The influence of chemical parameters on radionuclide cycling has been extensively investigated in Lake Michigan and, to a lesser degree, in Lake Ontario. The need for developing a radiological objective for fish becomes apparent from an assessment of the very few data collected thus far on the biological and dosimetric aspects. Several research and monitoring needs are also identified.

Synergism between mutant HNF1A and the metabolic syndrome in Oji-Cree Type 2 diabetes.

AIMS: To determine the prevalence of the metabolic syndrome in the Sandy Lake Oji-Cree and to examine its interaction with HNF1A in association with impaired glucose tolerance and Type 2 diabetes. METHODS: Using data collected from the Sandy Lake Health and Diabetes Project (1993-1995), the presence or absence of the metabolic syndrome was determined in 515 Oji-Cree subjects, > or = 18 years of age. In the original study, fasting plasma analytes were measured, a 75-g oral glucose tolerance test was administered, and subjects were genotyped for HNF1A G319S. RESULTS: The unadjusted prevalence of the metabolic syndrome in the Oji-Cree adults was 29.9%. The adjusted odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval for Type 2 diabetes among subjects who carried the HNF1A G319S mutation and had the modified metabolic syndrome (excluding hyperglycaemia) was 20.3 (6.94, 59.6). Adjusted ORs for Type 2 diabetes for subjects with either the HNF1A G319S mutation alone or the modified metabolic syndrome alone were 5.56 (2.85, 10.9) and 4.84 (2.53, 9.27), respectively. The risk of having impaired glucose tolerance was not influenced by the presence of either factor. CONCLUSIONS: The risk of Type 2 diabetes was similar (approximately five-fold increased) for subjects with either the presence of the modified metabolic syndrome or the private HNF1A G319S mutation. Interestingly, when present in combination, the two independent risk factors appeared to act synergistically to confer an even greater increased risk of Type 2 diabetes.

Towards a generalized model for the primary and secondary contamination of lakes by Chernobyl-derived radiocesium.

As part of the UK Ministry of Agriculture Fisheries and Food Directorate of Fisheries Research (MAFF/DFR) post-Chernobyl monitoring program, a detailed study was carried out of the change over time in dissolved-phase 137Cs concentrations in a number of lakes in Cumbria, UK. These measurements have been combined with published data on 137Cs in Cumbrian and other European lakes in order to develop and test a "double exponential" model for changes in lakewater concentrations: A exp(-k1t) + B exp(-k2t) where the exponential terms correspond, respectively, to the initial fast flush of activity through the system followed by longer-term transfers (timescale, years) from the catchment. Parameter values have been determined for this model by curve-fitting to the set of measurements of post-Chernobyl 137Cs activities in lakes. Values of fitted parameters are shown to be related, in a simple manner, to the physical characteristics of the system, in particular water residence time and mean lake depth. These parameters are generalized to give a simple empirical model for the full set of study lakes. The model is shown to give estimates of 137Cs activity to within a factor of 5 of field data for a period of several years after the fallout. Initial fractional losses of activity from catchment to lake were determined to be within the range 0.44-8.7% per year, declining exponentially with a mean rate constant 0.98 x 10(-3) d(-1).

Speciation in the vanadate-alanylhistidine-peroxide system.

The speciation in the quaternary aqueous H+-H2VO4(-)-H2O2-L-alpha-alanyl-L-histidine (Ah) system has been determined from quantitative 51V NMR measurements and potentiometric data (glass electrode). The study was performed in 0.150 M Na(Cl) medium at 25 degrees C. Data were evaluated with the computer program LAKE, which is able to treat combined potentiometric and NMR data. In the ternary H+-H2VO4(-)-Ah system, two complexes, (H+)p(H2VO4-)q(Ah)r, having (p, q, r) values (0, 1, 1) and (1, 1, 1) (pKa = 6.88) explain all data. In the quaternary H+-H2VO4(-)-H2O2-Ah system, seven complexes were determined in addition to all binary and ternary complexes, four with a V/X/Ah ratio 1:1:1 and three with a ratio 1:2:1 (X = peroxo ligand). VX2Ah2- and VX2Ah- (pKa = 8.26) are the main quaternary complexes and predominate in the pH range 5 to 9. Chemical shifts, compositions and formation constants for all the quaternary complexes are given, and equilibrium conditions are illustrated in distribution diagrams.

Speciation in Vanadium Bioinorganic Systems. 2. An NMR, ESR, and Potentiometric Study of the Aqueous H(+)-Vanadate-Maltol System.

A systematic study of the physiologically interesting vanadium-maltol (V-MaH) system has been performed in 0.150 M Na(Cl) at 25 degrees C, using NMR, ESR, and potentiometric techniques. Complexation occurs within a wide pH range, from around 1 up to 10.5. However, a pH-, concentration-, and time-dependent spontaneous reduction of vanadium(V) to vanadium(IV) occurs. From ESR spectra the conditions for this reduction are evaluated and discussed. From potentiometric (glass electrode) and quantitative (51)V NMR measurements, the full speciation in the H(+)-H(2)VO(4)(-)-MaH system was determined in the pH range 5-10.5. Data were evaluated with the computer program LAKE, which is able to treat combined emf and NMR data. The pK(a) value for MaH was determined to be 8.437 +/- 0.005. In the ternary system, three complexes are formed: VMa(2)(-), VMa(-), and VMa(2)(-), having log beta(0,1,2) = 7.02 +/- 0.03, log beta(0,1,1) = 2.66 +/- 0.05, and log beta(-)(1,1,1) = -7.37 +/- 0.21. The errors given are 3sigma. The VMa(2)(-) complex appears as the main species in a pH range from 4.5 to 8.5, whereas both mononuclear monoligand species are minor. Equilibrium conditions are illustrated in distribution diagrams, and the structures of the complexes formed are proposed.

Genetic population structure indicates sympatric speciation of Lake Malawi pelagic cichlids.

Allopatric processes of speciation have routinely been presented to explain the extraordinary radiation of the East African Great Lakes cichlid fish species flocks. The 21 or more species of pelagic cichlids within the Lake Malawi flock appear to have lake-wide distributions that challenge such a concept. Data from six microsatellite DNA loci indicate single, panmictic populations across the lake of three Diplotaxodon species. Levels of variability at these loci suggest that populations have been large and stable. Mitochondrial DNA sequence data (872 bp of control region + 981 bp of the NADH-2) from 90 species, representing all major clades within the Lake Malawi flock, indicate reciprocal monophyly of the pelagic clade. We suggest that these data support a hypothesis that speciation in sympatry is more plausible (and widespread) within the cichlid species flocks than previously thought.

[Bathing water related diseases: the Carinthian Sentinel Project as the source of epidemiological data].

The federal country of Carinthia is known for its lakes and ponds, which are extensively used for bathing. The water quality is monitored regularly in accordance to the EC-Directive 76/160/EC and especially to the more rigorous Austrian Standard M6230. Since redevelopment measures of the lakes have been nearly finished the water quality found has improved essentially. In spite of these monitored data no effective correlation to data from the concerning ambulant sector of medical care could be established. The Carinthian Sentinel Practice Network started in summer 1994 to retrieve informations about occurrence and frequency of bathing related illness of children up to 16 years old. The 26 participating primary health care and pediatric physicians, having their own independent practices spread all over the country, reported the specific doctor-patient-contracts to the coordinating base. Criteria for inclusion in the medical report were headache, sore throat, otalgia, stomach-ache, nausea, emesis, diarrhoea, fever, rhinitis, cough, cold, moreover conjunctivitis, skin rash and specific dermatitis. In addition physicians reported where, how long and how often the children had been bathing and how long they had been free of symptoms afterwards. Each case was reported to the coordinating base including a presumed diagnosis. Statistic evaluation showed that bathing related illness may be divided into three main groups according to symptom frequency. The frequency of otalgia (32.4%) was significantly higher than any other symptom asked for. Two groups of symptoms correlate with each other: on one hand rhinitis, conjunctivitis, cough and sore throat (36.5%) and on the other hand nausea, emesis, diarrhoea and fever (41.9%). These data underline conclusions drawn by other authors but are not representative enough to correlate to data from water monitoring. First results suggest that conclusions for public health authorities can be drawn from this additional information about the state of the lakes and ponds-providing a sufficient number of data is reported.

Detecting chlorophyll, Secchi disk depth and surface temperature in a sub-alpine lake using Landsat imagery.

Some bio-physical parameters, such as chlorophyll a concentration, Secchi disk depth and water surface temperature were mapped in the sub-alpine Lake Iseo (Italy) using Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) data acquired on the 7 March 1997. In order to adequately investigate the water-leaving radiance, TM data were atmospherically corrected using a partially image-based method, and the atmospheric transmittance was measured in synchrony with the satellite passage. An empirical approach of relating atmospherically corrected TM spectral reflectance values to in situ measurements, collected during the satellite data acquisition, was used. The models developed were used to map the chlorophyll concentration and Secchi disk depth throughout the lake. Both models gave high determination coefficients (R2 = 0.99 for chlorophyll and R2 = 0.85 for the Secchi disk) and the spatial distribution of chlorophyll concentration and Secchi disk depth was mapped with contour intervals of 1 mg/m3 and 1 m, respectively. A scene-independent procedure was used to derive the surface temperature of the lake from the TM data with a root mean square error of 0.3 degrees C.

Application and validation of a new biotic index using data from several water systems.

Protozoans of Lake Donghu were collected from five stations using the PFU method. The sampling was conducted for one year and two times a month. The aim of this research was to test the applicability of a new protozoa biotic index, species pollution value (SPV) and community pollution value (CPV), established by the authors using data from the River Hanjiang. Each station's CPV was calculated from the SPV and the correlation analysis between the CPV and the comprehensive chemical index of stations I, II, III showed a significant correlation between them. The pollution status of the five stations was correctly evaluated by the CPV. These results suggested that the biotic index could be applied in water systems other than the River Hanjiang. The SPV of some protozoa species in Lake Donghu, not observed in the River Hanjiang were established. In order to further test the applicability of the biotic index, protozoan and chemistry data from the Rivers Torrente Stirone and Parma of Italy were used. The results showed that the CPV for the two rivers had a close relationship with the chemical water quality, which indicated that the biotic index could be applied in other parts of the world for the monitoring and estimating of water quality. Since the results of testing and verifying the biotic index in some other water systems in China were also satisfactory, this indicated that the biotic index has an extensive suitability for freshwater ecosystems. As long as more than 50% of the species in a sample have a SPV, the CPV calculated from the SPV is reliable for monitoring and evaluating water quality.

Disappearing Arctic lakes.

Historical archived satellite images were compared with contemporary satellite data to track ongoing changes in more than 10,000 large lakes in rapidly warming Siberia. A widespread decline in lake abundance and area has occurred since 1973, despite slight precipitation increases to the region. The spatial pattern of lake disappearance suggests (i) that thaw and "breaching" of permafrost is driving the observed losses, by enabling rapid lake draining into the subsurface; and (ii) a conceptual model in which high-latitude warming of permafrost triggers an initial but transitory phase of lake and wetland expansion, followed by their widespread disappearance.

The use of epiphyton and epilithon data as a base for calculating ecological indices in monitoring of eutrophication in lakes in central Sweden.

Eutrophication was monitored with the aid of one similarity and seven diversity indices in the lakes of different trophic levels (eutrophic, mesotrophic and oligotrophic) in central Sweden. The ecological indices were applied separately to epiphyton and epilithon communities. Epiphyton turned out to be inappropriate for assessing eutrophication in the lakes studied. On the other hand, Hurlbert's, Simpson's and the similarity indices turned out to be promising environmental tools when applied to the data of epilithon.
