[Total water pollution load determining on Tianxi catchment area in Shenyang city].

This paper analysed and determined the total water pollution load of Tianxi catchment area in Shenyang city systematically; by giving the reliability measurement to the total pollution load, put forward the suggestions to improve the system information reliability. It was found that to strengthen monitoring and investigation for the pumping station is of great advantage to control the pollutants of heavy metals, moreover, by adding monitoring to the Huanglatuozi section of Xi river, not only can the pollution load be identified clearly but also organic pollutants can be controlled more accurately and timely.

Deterioration of eelgrass, Zostera marina L., meadows by water pollution in Seto Inland Sea, Japan.

Survival of transplanted Zostera marina L. (eelgrass) and environmental conditions (water quality, bottom sediments, sedimentation on leaves and flow regime) were studied concurrently in the center, edge, and at the outside of a eelgrass meadow located in a eutrophic coastal zone in northern Hiroshima Bay, Seto Inland Sea, Japan. Eelgrass transplants at the outside of the meadow declined significantly, whereas those at the center were consistently well established. Silt content in the bottom sediments at the outside was higher than that at the center. The sediment was oxic from the surface to 2 cm deep at the center, whereas those at the edge and the outside were reductive almost from the surface. The sediment characteristics typical in eutrophic water seemed to be a factor responsible for the deterioration of eelgrass meadows. Although suspended solid concentrations in the water columns were almost the same, the amount of sediments deposited on leaves of eelgrass at the outside was higher than that at the center of the meadow. The amount of the deposition at the outside seems to be enough to inhibit photosynthesis; i.e. photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) available for eelgrass was only 36% of that without any deposition. The deposition in the center, however, was small enough to allow 84% of the original PPFD. Flow rates, determined at 30 cm above the bottom, a half height of average eelgrass, suggested that the rate at the outside was not enough to remove deposited sediments from the surface of eelgrass leaves. Thus, the large amount of sediment deposition caused by water pollution and/or eutrophication seemed to be another factor to inhibit the survival of eelgrass at the outside edge of the meadow.

A study on volatile organic sulfide causes of odors at Philadelphia's Northeast Water Pollution Control Plant.

Volatile organic sulfide (VOS) causes of odors were studied at Philadelphia's Northeast Water Pollution Control Plant between September 11 and November 25, 2003. Results showed that dimethyl sulfide (DMS) dominated the VOS pool whenever VOS concentration rose above the background level (<50 microg/L). Methanethiol was generally less than 10% of VOS and it was mainly found at sites with limited or reduced dissolved oxygen (DO). Dimethyl disulfide occupied approximately 1% of the VOS and was often not detectable. Carbon disulfide was not detected. The concentrations of DMS varied by three orders of magnitude, ranging from <5 to 1260 microg/L. High concentrations of DMS, averaging 419 and ranging from <5 to 1000 microg/L, were generally found in return activated sludge. The DMS concentration in the primary effluent ranged from <5 to 729 microg/L and averaged 245 microg/L. Concentrations of DMS in the aeration tank (AT) with high DO were from <5 to 997 microg/L with an average of 250 microg/L. However, DMS concentrations in the AT representing anaerobic conditions were as high as 1260 microg/L. The estimated average purge efficiency of DMS was about 78%, which required a DMS production rate of 108 microg/Lh(-1) to keep the analyzed concentration in the AT. While a valid but weak statistical relationship between acetone and DMS was observed, there was no strong evidence to support that the methylation of hydrogen sulfide with acetone could be the mechanism for the DMS formation. Instead, DMS production was found to be associated with the characteristics of incoming wastewater. Thus, a VOS precursor was believed to be present in the incoming wastewater, which warranted a need for further investigation.

Water pollution and human health in China.

China's extraordinary economic growth, industrialization, and urbanization, coupled with inadequate investment in basic water supply and treatment infrastructure, have resulted in widespread water pollution. In China today approximately 700 million people--over half the population--consume drinking water contaminated with levels of animal and human excreta that exceed maximum permissible levels by as much as 86% in rural areas and 28% in urban areas. By the year 2000, the volume of wastewater produced could double from 1990 levels to almost 78 billion tons. These are alarming trends with potentially serious consequences for human health. This paper reviews and analyzes recent Chinese reports on public health and water resources to shed light on what recent trends imply for China's environmental risk transition. This paper has two major conclusions. First, the critical deficits in basic water supply and sewage treatment infrastructure have increased the risk of exposure to infectious and parasitic disease and to a growing volume of industrial chemicals, heavy metals, and algal toxins. Second, the lack of coordination between environmental and public health objectives, a complex and fragmented system to manage water resources, and the general treatment of water as a common property resource mean that the water quality and quantity problems observed as well as the health threats identified are likely to become more acute.

Application of locally available materials for the treatment of organic polluted water.

Several types of water treatment technologies including adsorption are now being used to treat polluted water. In this paper the removal of phenol by adsorption will be discussed. Activated carbons are successfully applied for purification of potable water and the removal of organic pollutants in wastwater. This paper is concerned with a low cost approach to treating waste water that is significant especially for those countries where oil palm is an available agricultural product like Malaysia, Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Thailand, Papua New Guinea. In the coastal region coconut is an available agricultural product and activated carbon prepared using coconut shell is also an economical method of water treatment. The materials used in this study were Commercial Activated Carbon (CAC), prepared from coconut shell and Modified Oil Palm Shell (MOPAS) of 1 to 2 mm diameters. The surface area of CAC and MOPAS was 38.5 m2/g and 38.2 m2/g respectively and the iodine number was determined as 674 and 454 for CAC and MOPAS, respectively. From the study the result shows above 70% removal efficiency for 5 mg/L and 40% removal efficiency for 20 mg/L of phenol solution. The performance efficiency will be discussed based on batch test, following Freundlich adsorption isotherm. The results indicate that CAC exhibits a higher adsorptive capacity (Kf of 0.079) as compared to MOPAS (Kf of 0.048). Hence a better removal efficiency for CAC at lower concentration of phenol. Results from column tests show a better adsorptive capacity for CAC (2.73) as compared to MOPAS (2.48).

Nematodes and water pollution in eastern part of Nile Delta.

Examination of some represented water sites revealed presence larvae and eggs of the nematodes infecting man and animals. Eggs in a descending order of abundance were Trichostrongylus, Toxocara canis, T. vitolorum, and Ascaris sp., then Trichocephalus and Ancylostoma sp. Larvae in a descending order were Strongyloides, Trichostrongylus and Ancylostoma sp. No doubt contaminated or polluted water plays an important role as nematode-borne source.

[Organic pollutants biodegradation in micro-polluted water enhanced by ultrasonic].

The effect of ultrasonic on the biotreatment of micro-polluted source water in a membrane bioreactor was studied through contrast experiments between the membrane bioreactor with and without ultrasonic. The results showed that ultrasonic at proper intensity could improve biological activity, increase organic load of the bioreactor, and enhance the removal of organic matters. The study of TTC-DHA of the bacteria and apparent molecular size distribution (AMSD) of organic compounds in the influent and effluent in the contrast experiments further proved that ultrasonic enhanced the bioactivity of the membrane bioreactor. The experiments with ultrasonic at different powers showed that ultrasonic at 10 W enhanced bioactivity most effectively. The effect of ultrasonic changed with running time. It was found that ultrasonic effect could be maintained for 24 hours, so the interval of ultrasonic treatment could be set at 24 hours. The mechanism of biological activity enhancement by ultrasonic was also investigated.
