Physiological refugia: swamps, hypoxia tolerance and maintenance of fish diversity in the Lake Victoria region.

In Lake Nabugabo, Uganda, a satellite of Lake Victoria, approximately 50% of the indigenous fishes disappeared from the open waters subsequent to the establishment of the introduced predatory Nile perch, Lates niloticus. This pattern is similar to the faunal loss experienced in the much larger Lake Victoria. Several of these species persisted in wetland refugia (e.g. ecotonal wetlands, swamp lagoons); however, deep swamp refugia (habitats lying well within the dense interior of fringing wetlands), are available only to a subset of the basin fauna with extreme tolerance to hypoxia. Although air-breathers are common in deep swamp refugia; we also documented a surprisingly high richness and abundance of non-air-breathing fishes. We describe several mechanisms that may facilitate survival in deep swamp refugia including high hemoglobin concentration, high hematocrit, large gill surface area and a low critical oxygen tension (P(c)). In addition, swamp-dwelling fishes showed lower PO(2) thresholds for onset of aquatic surface respiration than the lake-dwelling fishes. This suggests higher tolerance to hypoxia in the swamp fishes because they are able to withstand a lower oxygen tension before approaching the surface. We suggest that physiological refugia may be important in modulating the impact of Nile perch and indigenous fishes in the Lake Nabugabo region; this highlights the need to evaluate relative tolerance of introduced predators and indigenous prey to environmental stressors.

Myxomatosis: the occurrence of antibody to a soluble antigen of myxoma virus in wild rabbits, Oryctolagus cuniculus (L.), in Victoria, Australia.

The occurrence of antibody of myxoma virus in wild rabbits following epizootics is highest in the semi-arid north-west of Victoria and lowest in temperate southern Victoria. Occurrence ranges up to about 90% in the north-west and to about 70% in the south except on the Western Plains where epizootics are rare and antibody occurrence seldom exceeds 30%. The establishment of the European rabbit flea may be changing the pattern of occurrence of antibody in the north-west by causing spring outbreaks of myxomatosis. It is suggested that the effects of the replacement of a simple recurring system of epizootic and breeding season several months apart by the occurrence of myxomatosis twice in the same year, once coincident with the breeding season, will be complex. The occurrence of detectable antibody may be less dependent on the infection rate and may be dependent to some extent on the relative timing of spring myxomatosis and the breeding season.

Photodynamic modulation by Victoria Blue BO of phenylephrine-induced calcium oscillations in freshly isolated rat hepatocytes.

The adrenergic agonist phenylephrine (PE) induced typical [Ca2+]i oscillations in freshly isolated rat hepatocytes, and the photodynamic effect of Victoria Blue BO on induced calcium oscillations was investigated. PE induced calcium oscillations disappeared after Victoria Blue BO photodynamic action (in 20 out of 26 experiments), or were present with a decreased amplitude (in 1 out of 26 experiments) or frequency (in 5 out of 26 experiments). After VBBO photodynamic action, the basal calcium level remained at pre-stimulatory level. In comparison, after treatment with the mitochondrial uncoupler CCCP. calcium oscillations disappeared in all experiments, with a significant increase in basal [Ca2+]i. After washing out of CCCP, basal [Ca2+]i returned to pre-stimulation level and calcium oscillations recovered. The photodynamically-induced blockade of calcium oscillations was irreversible, and this effect was present independent of the time interval between VBBO incubation and light illumination. Calcium oscillation blockade was not seen with VBBO in the dark at the concentration used, nor was it seen with light illumination alone. Taken together. it is concluded that VBBO photodynamic action could irreversibly block calcium oscillations in rat hepatocytes, possibly due to blockade of mitochondrion calcium release.

The effect of selection on a long wavelength-sensitive (LWS) opsin gene of Lake Victoria cichlid fishes.

In East African Lake Victoria >200 endemic species of haplochromine fishes have been described on the basis of morphological and behavioral differences. Yet molecular analysis has failed to reveal any species-specific differences among these fishes in either mitochondrial or nuclear genes. Although the genes could be shown to vary, the variations represent trans-species polymorphisms not yet assorted along species lines. Nevertheless, fixed genetic differences must exist between the species at loci responsible for the adaptive characters distinguishing the various forms from one another. Here we describe variation and fixation at the long wavelength-sensitive (LWS) opsin locus, which is selection-driven, adaptive, and if not species- then at least population-specific. Because color is one of the characters distinguishing species of haplochromine fishes and color perception plays an important part in food acquisition and mate choice, we suggest that the observed variation and fixation at the LWS opsin locus may have been involved in the process that has led to the spectacular species divergence of haplochromine fishes in Lake Victoria.

Conserved receptor-binding domains of Lake Victoria marburgvirus and Zaire ebolavirus bind a common receptor.

The GP(1,2) envelope glycoproteins (GP) of filoviruses (marburg- and ebolaviruses) mediate cell-surface attachment, membrane fusion, and entry into permissive cells. Here we show that a 151-amino acid fragment of the Lake Victoria marburgvirus GP1 subunit bound filovirus-permissive cell lines more efficiently than full-length GP1. An homologous 148-amino acid fragment of the Zaire ebolavirus GP1 subunit similarly bound the same cell lines more efficiently than a series of longer GP1 truncation variants. Neither the marburgvirus GP1 fragment nor that of ebolavirus bound a nonpermissive lymphocyte cell line. Both fragments specifically inhibited replication of infectious Zaire ebolavirus, as well as entry of retroviruses pseudotyped with either Lake Victoria marburgvirus or Zaire ebolavirus GP(1,2). These studies identify the receptor-binding domains of both viruses, indicate that these viruses utilize a common receptor, and suggest that a single small molecule or vaccine can be developed to inhibit infection of all filoviruses.

Andropause: knowledge and awareness among primary care physicians in Victoria, BC, Canada.

UNLABELLED: The causes, symptoms and treatment options for andropause have been well documented; however, not enough is known about the primary care physicians' (PCPs) knowledge in this therapeutic area. This study assesses the PCPs' awareness and knowledge of andropause in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. METHODS: Self-administered questionnaires were developed for family physicians and general practitioners. Each questionnaire included questions in three domains: 1) General knowledge, beliefs and exposure; 2) Knowledge of diagnostic and treatment options and; 3) General demographics. RESULTS: A very high percentage of PCPs had heard of andropause (96.3%). Of the physicians who completed the survey, 92.6% agreed that men experience something similar to women's menopause when they age and 98.0% agreed that andropause is associated with an increased risk of osteoporosis. Almost all PCPs (91.5%) agreed that prostate cancer is a contraindication to treatment while around one-third (33.9%) agreed that breast cancer was a contraindication. Slightly more than half of physicians (57.4%) felt that they encountered obstacles to their investigation of andropause with the most prevalent complaint being a lack of access to education resources. There is a need for improved continuing medical education (CME) programmes in the Greater Victoria region to give PCPs the skills to diagnose and manage andropause with confidence.

A review of the Victoria, Australia granny flat program.

The 10-year-old Victoria, Australia granny flat program has about 3000 units in place. Granny flats, designed as standardized units using panels, offer privacy yet proximity to family members. There are suggestions they be considered as affordable housing for younger people. This review of the Victoria program suggests that state initiatives are more successful than local ones, and that decentralized administration is associated with increased ability to delivery the granny flat units.

Does community care decrease length of stay and risk of rehospitalization in new patients with schizophrenia disorders? A comparative case register study in Groningen, The Netherlands; Victoria, Australia; and South-Verona, Italy.

This was a long-term followup study of defined cohorts of new patients who met ICD-10 criteria for schizophrenia and related disorders. Three mental health service systems with psychiatric case registers were compared. In two areas (Victoria, Australia, and South-Verona, Italy), a comprehensive system of community-based psychiatric care was developed, with a substantial reduction of hospital beds (to 0.27 beds/1,000 people). In the third area (Groningen, the Netherlands), despite the presence of community psychiatric services, mental health care was still mainly hospital based (1.6 beds/1,000 people). Two hypotheses were tested: (1) the length of stay is shorter in a community-based system than in a hospital-based system; and (2) the risk of rehospitalization is independent of the characteristics of the mental health system, so that risk is expected to be similar in areas with community-based and hospital-based systems. The first hypothesis was confirmed. The risk of rehospitalization, however, was lower in Victoria than in the two other areas, which might show the potential impact of community care in reducing rehospitalization.

On the age and origin of the species flock of haplochromine cichlid fishes of Lake Victoria.

Recent suggestions concerning the age and origin of the flock of haplochromine cichlid fishes in Lake Victoria (East Africa) are considered. These accept as proven the suggestion that Lake Victoria dried out completely in the Late Pleistocene, was dry for several thousand years, and refilled ca. 12400 years ago. Apart from the fact that other geophysical evidence contradicts this claim, its biological implications, which do likewise, have never been considered by those who have accepted it. Like those of all previous authors who have seized on the presence of the haplochromine flock of perhaps more than 600 species as evidence of extremely rapid evolution since the lake allegedly refilled, the account completely overlooks the fact that any such desiccation must have eliminated not only the haplochromine cichlids but the entire biota of the lake. Nevertheless, its present fauna not only includes the haplochromines but many other endemic organisms that would not be expected, and whose presence and history demand an explanation if the lake did indeed dry out. No such explanation has been offered, nor does such seem possible. The recent interpretation of events is questioned and rejected.

Male-male competition and nuptial-colour displacement as a diversifying force in Lake Victoria cichlid fishes.

We propose a new mechanism for diversification of male nuptial-colour patterns in the rapidly speciating cichlid fishes of Lake Victoria. Sympatric closely related species often display nuptial colours at opposite ends of the spectrum with males either blue or yellow to red. Colour polymorphisms within single populations are common too. We propose that competition between males for breeding sites promotes such colour diversification, and thereby speciation. We hypothesize that male aggression is primarily directed towards males of the common colour, and that rare colour morphs enjoy a negatively frequency-dependent fitness advantage. We test our hypothesis with a large dataset on the distributions and nuptial colorations of 52 species on 47 habitat islands in Lake Victoria, and with a smaller dataset on the within-spawning-site distributions of males with different coloration. We report that territories of males of the same colour are negatively associated on the spawning site, and that the distribution of closely related species over habitat islands is determined by nuptial coloration in the fashion predicted by our hypothesis. Whereas among unrelated species those with similar nuptial colour are positively associated, among closely related species those with similar colour are negatively associated and those with different colour are positively associated. This implies that negatively frequency-dependent selection on nuptial coloration among closely related species is a sufficiently strong force to override other effects on species distributions. We suggest that male-male competition is an important and previously neglected agent of diversification among haplochromine cichlid fishes.

Intraspecific sexual selection on a speciation trait, male coloration, in the Lake Victoria cichlid Pundamilia nyererei.

The haplochromine cichlids of Lake Victoria constitute a classical example of explosive speciation. Extensive intra- and interspecific variation in male nuptial coloration and female mating preferences, in the absence of postzygotic isolation between species, has inspired the hypothesis that sexual selection has been a driving force in the origin of this species flock. This hypothesis rests on the premise that the phenotypic traits that underlie behavioural reproductive isolation between sister species diverged under sexual selection within a species. We test this premise in a Lake Victoria cichlid, by using laboratory experiments and field observations. We report that a male colour trait, which has previously been shown to be important for behavioural reproductive isolation between this species and a close relative, is under directional sexual selection by female mate choice within this species. This is consistent with the hypothesis that female choice has driven the divergence in male coloration between the two species. We also find that male territoriality is vital for male reproductive success and that multiple mating by females is common.

Inheritance of female mating preference in a sympatric sibling species pair of Lake Victoria cichlids: implications for speciation.

Female mate choice has often been proposed to play an important role in cases of rapid speciation, in particular in the explosively evolved haplochromine cichlid species flocks of the Great Lakes of East Africa. Little, if anything, is known in cichlid radiations about the heritability of female mating preferences. Entirely sympatric distribution, large ecological overlap and conspicuous differences in male nuptial coloration, and female preferences for these, make the sister species Pundamilia pundamilia and P. nyererei from Lake Victoria an ideally suited species pair to test assumptions on the genetics of mating preferences made in models of sympatric speciation. Female mate choice is necessary and sufficient to maintain reproductive isolation between these species, and it is perhaps not unlikely therefore, that female mate choice has been important during speciation. A prerequisite for this, which had remained untested in African cichlid fish, is that variation in female mating preferences is heritable. We investigated mating preferences of females of these sister species and their hybrids to test this assumption of most sympatric speciation models, and to further test the assumption of some models of sympatric speciation by sexual selection that female preference is a single-gene trait. We find that the differences in female mating preferences between the sister species are heritable, possibly with quite high heritabilities, and that few but probably more than one genetic loci contribute to this behavioural speciation trait with no apparent dominance. We discuss these results in the light of speciation models and the debate about the explosive radiation of cichlid fishes in Lake Victoria.

Molecular characterization of measles viruses isolated in Victoria, Australia, between 1973 and 1998.

Molecular epidemiology studies have made significant contributions to the control of measles virus infection through the identification of source and transmission pathways of the virus. These studies allow observation of changes in measles virus genotypes over time in a particular geographical location, clarification of epidemiological links during measles outbreaks, separation of indigenous strains from newly imported strains and distinction between vaccine- and wild-type virus-associated illness. A total of 35 wild-type measles viruses identified in Victoria, Australia, between 1973 and 1998 were characterized by nucleic acid sequence analysis of the nucleoprotein gene and, in some cases, the haemagglutinin gene. Relatedness between the viruses was studied and genotypes were assigned using a classification scheme recently proposed by the World Health Organization. Five recognized genotypes (C2, D1, D4, D5 and H) and one previously undescribed genotype, which we propose to be D7, were identified. Successive replacement of measles virus genetic lineages occurred in Victoria, with no evidence of temporal overlap, during this 25 year period. This pattern of circulation is likely to represent serial importation of wild-type measles virus strains from overseas foci of measles virus infections.

Information and support needs of callers to the Cancer Helpline, the Cancer Council Victoria.

The broad aims of the present evaluation were, firstly, to describe the information and support needs of callers to a Cancer Helpline and, secondly, to describe the response of the service to these needs. A further aim was to use these results to develop strategies to improve the service. Anonymous caller information collected over a 6-year period was analysed. The setting of the study was the Cancer Helpline service operated by the Cancer Council Victoria within the state of Victoria, Australia. The caller profile was similar to that described in the literature, with the majority of callers being women, younger than the general cancer population and enquiring most commonly about breast cancer. Patients and their relatives called to obtain information about cancer diagnosis, treatment and management and to obtain psychological and emotional support. Callers received emotional support, were supplied with verbal and written information and were referred to a variety of support services. Some population groups are underrepresented in the data. Changes to the Helpline and other services over the 6-year period are described. The pattern of callers to the Cancer Helpline appears similar to that described in the USA and Europe. Many issues and challenges are common. The paper discusses additional strategies for meeting the information and support needs of those affected by cancer and describes current and suggested research areas.

Male mating preferences pre-date the origin of a female trait polymorphism in an incipient species complex of Lake Victoria cichlids.

Disruptive sexual selection on colour patterns has been suggested as a major cause of diversification in the cichlid species flock of Lake Victoria. In Neochromis omnicaeruleus, a colour and sex determination polymorphism is associated with a polymorphism in male and female mating preferences. Theoretical work on this incipient species complex found conditions for rapid sympatric speciation by selection on sex determination and sexual selection on male and female colour patterns, under restrictive assumptions. Here we test the biological plausibility of a key assumption of such models, namely, the existence of a male preference against a novel female colour morph before its appearance in the population. We show that most males in a population that lacks the colour polymorphism exhibit a strong mating preference against the novel female colour morph and that reinforcement is not a likely explanation for the origin of such male preferences. Our results show that a specific condition required for the combined action of selection on sex determination and sexual selection to drive sympatric speciation is biologically justified. Finally, we suggest that Lake Victoria cichlids might share an ancestral female recognition scheme, predisposing colour monomorphic populations/species to similar evolutionary pathways leading to divergence of colour morphs in sympatry.

Tinea due to Trichophyton violaceum in Victoria, Australia.

From 1963 to 1995, twenty isolates of Trichophyton violaceum from cases of tinea capitis and tinea corporis were referred to the Mycology Reference Laboratory of the Microbiological Diagnostic Unit at the University of Melbourne (Parkville, Victoria, Australia). The patients had presented at clinics in metropolitan Melbourne and country towns in the state of Victoria, Australia. Most patients were immigrants from the Mediterranean region or were Australian Aborigines. The most recent isolates of T. violaceum came from Ethiopian immigrants. Details of these twenty case histories are presented. The changing global distribution of infections due to T. violaceum is noted. The literature recording infections due to T. violaceum in Australia is reviewed.

Supply and demand for prosthetic treatment in Victoria, Australia.

Surveys were conducted in Victoria, Australia, to estimate the demand for prosthetic treatment by examining the needs of a randomly selected group of the population. Similar surveys were conducted in relation to the contribution made by the dentists in Victoria and also that of a recently introduced group of workers, the Advanced Dental Technicians. It was found that approximately 19% of the population required prosthetic treatment in the full denture field and that the existing dentists were not meeting this need. When the Advanced Dental Technicians are more fully engaged in clinical work, the need may well be met.
