[Periodontal disease index].

Periodontal disease indices are a must in epidemiologic studies, analytical epidemiology making special demands. The indices hitherto commonly used do not meet all demands; consequently, they can be applied only in certain studies, especially in the sense of descriptive epidemiology. For 15 years, the periodontal disease index according to Kötzschke has proved to be useful for large-scale correlation calculations, being well suited for making evident the effects of the most different factors. At the beginning of any experiment and investigation, exact considerations must be given to the aim and special objectives of an index.

[Tasks of pedodontics from the viewpoint of maxillofacial development].

Out of every 100 children, only two to four develop a set of teeth which is free of disturbances. Eugnathia is common, but the condition does not require orthodontic treatment. The beginning stages of maldevelopment may be overlooked if the parents do not take their children to the dentist regularly. The consequences of premature teeth loss for the first and particularly the second dentition may be considerable; the sensitive development of dentition may be disturbed. Maldevelopment in the mixed dentition period however may be the cause of early space loss. If lack of space is severe, the neighboring deciduous teeth are also forced out by the cause of early space loss. If lack of space is severe, the neighboring deciduous teeth are also forced out by the erupting teeth. On the one hand, this loss tends to increase the lack of space and therefore all the detrimental consequences. Dental care of children requires the knowledge necessary to directly establish and immediately correct incipient disturbances in development in addition to the recognition and treatment of diseases of the teeth and the periodontium.

Loss of arch integrity due to interproximal caries.

A simple orthodontic procedure, utilising a fixed appliance, is described. The procedure is adopted to correct a problem commonly met with in conservative dentistry. It enables a correctly contoured restoration to be placed which will prevent the development of further dental problems.

[Root reactions during treatment with indomethacin in the rat].

During the course of a study on the effect of indomethacin, an inhibitor of PG-synthesis, on the alveolar bone remodeling associated with the drift of the rat molar, the root profile appeared altered. The perimeter of the buccal root of the lower first molar had increased during the 7-day experimental period (+9%; p less than 0.02) in the treated group. This was due to an increase in the extent of root resorption lacunae (+99%; p less than 0.05). They were located in the disto-buccal aspect of the root, i.e., facing the alveolar wall remodeling area. The periodontal ligament width was also increased (p less than 0.001). This might be an adaptative process to maintain the periodontal ligament width as the drift of the teeth had not ceased while the remodeling had markedly slowed down. These results show that the osteoclastic population responsible for root resorption was not PG-dependent, unlike that active on alveolar wall. In addition, dentin deposition was accelerated in the pulp area underlying the resorption lacunae in the treated group as shown by measuring the distance between two fluorescent labels incorporated in a 6-day interval (p less than 0.05).
