Physicians, who are generally perceived as privileged persons in American society, are greatly overworked as a group and sometimes are quite troubled as individuals. Much of their dissatisfaction appears to stem from an open-ended work schedule. A specific method is suggested whereby physicians in private or salaried group practice can take steps to control their working hours. This method, properly applied, can lead to improved productivity, greater patient satisfaction, and enhanced personal health for the physician. Use of this analysis may be helpful to currently functioning medical groups wishing to improve their work schedules as well as to physicians or institutions contemplating new group formation.

Resolving problems with time management requires an understanding of the concept of working smarter rather than harder. Therefore, managing time effectively is a vital responsibility of department managers. When developing a plan for more effectively managing time, it is important to carefully analyze where time is currently being used/lost. Keeping a daily log can be a time consuming effort. However, the log can provide information about ways that time may be saved and how to organize personal schedules to maximize time efficiency. The next step is to develop a strategy to decrease wasted time and create a more cohesive radiology department. The following list of time management strategies provides some suggestions for developing a plan. Get focused. Set goals and priorities. Get organized. Monitor individual motivation factors. Develop memory techniques. In healthcare, success means delivering the highest quality of care by getting organized, meeting deadlines, creating efficient schedules and appropriately budgeting resources. Effective time management focuses on knowing what needs to be done when. The managerial challenge is to shift the emphasis from doing everything all at once to orchestrating the departmental activities in order to maximize the time given in a normal workday.
Timely management of variances is vital for cost effective patient care. A multifaceted approach that involves the healthcare team, patient, and family facilitates the identification and management of variances as they occur. The critical path can be used to monitor variances that influence fiscal outcomes in select patient populations. Strategies are described that can be used to monitor and manage variances, including developing a mechanism for monitoring and managing variances, implementing that mechanism, and evaluating the process for usability. Monitoring variances includes choosing tools that will be used and staff who will assume primary responsibility, and initiating an outcome analysis program. Managing variances comprises organizing an interdisciplinary committee, establishing a communication plan, creating strategies, and using continuous quality improvement teams.
The time demands of online teaching may discourage nurse educators from developing distance learning courses. As consumer expectations for online education grow, it is essential that educators identify strategies that will enable efficient use of time to both develop and teach online courses. The authors review the distance learning literature from the perspective of time management strategies for online teaching. Approaches used by the authors to efficiently develop and teach online courses are described.
In the field of databases, time management at different levels of granularity has been an issue for several years, for instance when dealing with clinical information from different databases using different time units, dealing with natural language expressions, or when dealing with temporal uncertainty. A temporal data model is proposed to manage the temporal aspect of data, presented at various and mixed levels of granularity. The concept of temporal assertions shapes the entire temporal information. The model provides a temporal dimension to the data by using intervals that can be specified at different granularities. The model supports a three-valued logic, where True, False and Undefined are the truth values. The temporal data model allows to manage some degrees of uncertainty when establishing temporal relationships between intervals or between temporal assertions, expressed at different granularities. The logical connectives and quantifiers can manage each of the three truth-values. We applied the temporal data model by implementing an object-oriented database system for managing follow-up clinical data from patients who underwent percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty.
Modern dentistry, with its various disciplines, has an exciting and unmatched potential to enhance the overall quality of life for our patients. In this environment one of the greatest challenges for clinicians is to properly utilize this vast potential. It can be very difficult to consistently establish health and physiological occlusal relationships in patients with significant dental, periodontal, dentoalveolar, temporomandibular, and/or skeletal problems. This task is further complicated by ever-increasing patient and provider demands for results with optimal dentofacial aesthetics and long-term stability. Interdisciplinary Dentofacial Therapy (IDT) is a proven diagnostic and clinical pathway for consistently maximizing patient outcomes in these complicated areas. Within a climate of increasing scientific and technological advances in dentistry, today's dental professional must study continuously to stay abreast in one area, let alone in all of them. The responsibility to the patient, however, is to utilize fully the extensive options that the profession can provide. As stated above, a proven treatment philosophy for accomplishing this is called Interdisciplinary Dentofacial Therapy, or IDT. When properly performed, IDT can produce unparalleled professional satisfaction and camaraderie by reaching higher levels of patient care through optimal coordination of knowledge and skills in the various disciplines. In addition, IDT can consistently produce optimal treatment results while simultaneously producing profound practice management, time management and marketing benefits for practitioners. This paper briefly describes these benefits while defining the philosophies and hallmarks of IDT. It will also give insight into the implementation of IDT and why it will be even more necessary and valuable in the future than it is today.
Managers need more time. They juggle five tasks at once. As they work on one, the other four fall to the ground. They make a list of 10 things to do and spend all day working on number 11. Yes, managers need more time, but they already have all the time there is. So they must make better use of the time they have. Many articles address this issue. Managers read them all, but none of them work. This one will.
