By C-method of chromosome staining three transplantable murine tumor lines passaged in vivo were studied. Marker chromosomes were discovered in all cell lines under observation. The previously described marker chromosomes B and C were found in transplantable Ehrlich ascites carcinoma cells, acrocentric chromosome with additional C-band --in cells of line C-37, acrocentric chromosome with double quantity of subcentrometric heterochromatin in cells of line TG-180. The data obtained make it possible to distinguish the lines under study by C-method of chromosome staining.

The modifying influence of anaestesia on tumourigenic process (its stimulative or inhibitory effect upon tumour and metastasis growth) was established. It may occur indirectly, i.e. through endocrine link of the host-tumour system, and due to cytostatic effect of the anaesthetic drug (fluothane in particular).
Lymphocytes and macrophages of normal rats, cells of lymphosarcoma and ovarian carcinoma of rats (CC strain), cells of sarcoma 37 and lymphosarcoma Nk/Ly of mice were investigated for their capacity for vital staining by 86 days in concentrations within the range of 10(-5)--3-10(-2) M. It was found that alkylation of amino groups of the basic dyes increased their capacity for penetrating the living cells and depositing in their cytoplasm in cases of thiazine, oxazine, acridine, xanthene, diazine, and triphenylmethane compounds. The acid radicals decreased the capacity of the dye to vital staining of the cells considerably. The degree of basicity of the dye molecule and its amino groups played no decisive role in the process of vital staining.
This study focuses on the effect of TEPC-183 (tetramethylpentadecane)-induced plasmacytoma on resistance of mice to infection with Streptococcus pneumoniae type III. Vaccination of normal or of TEPC-183-bearing mice with either a polyvalent pneumococcal vaccine (Pnu-Imune) or purified polysaccharide type III protects both against challenge with live S. pneumoniae. However, a 38-fold increase in susceptibility of the tumor-bearing mice over that of controls was observed. Immunized splenectomized mice were ten times more susceptible to infection than were immunized normal mice. However, this increased susceptibility of splenectomized mice could be overcome by passively administered antibody. In passive protection experiments, antisera obtained from normal and TEPC-183-bearing or from cyclophosphamide-treated mice were almost equally protective. A 6-fold increase of antibody (133 ng of antibody), however, was required to protect TEPC-183-bearing mice against challenge with 500 organisms, as compared with the 22 ng of antibody required to protect normal mice, indicative of defective host defense mechanisms in addition to the lower production of antibody in the TEPC-183-bearing mice. In contrast, mice bearing an equal tumor load of Sarcoma 37 behaved similarly to normal mice, showing that the increased susceptibility to infection was due to TEPC-183, a particularly immunosuppressive tumor.
Light scattering (90 degrees) of Ehrlich ascites tumor and sarcoma 37 cell suspension in the temperature range 25,60 degrees C was studied (heating velocity was 3 grad/min). It is found that the scattering curve has the peak at 46 degrees C and two plots which are typical of phase transitions in the membranes; the first plot in the range 40-46 degrees C is reversible and the second one at 46-51 degrees C is irreversible. It is proposed that 46 degrees is a critical temperature for the membranes structure stability and viability of the studied cells.
The antitumor effect of some N alpha-benzyloxycarbonyl-N,N-bis-(2-halogenethyl)hydrazide derivatives of lysine, glycine, cystine, phenylalanine and p-chlorophenylalanine, was studied. Six of eight newly synthesized compounds show considerable antitumor effect on solid Walker carcinosarcoma 256 (about 95% tumor growth inhibition). Three of these compounds under study increased the lifespan of mice with leukemia L1210. The investigation of the effect of N alpha-benzyloxycarbonyl,D,L-phenylalanine-N,N-bis(2-chloroethyl)hydrazine on various mouse tumors showed remarkable growth inhibition of the Ehrlich ascites carcinoma, sarcoma 37, colon adenocarcinoma akatol and lesser antitumor effect also on solid adenocarcinoma 755, Lewis lung carcinoma and melanoma B16. All investigated compounds exhibited depression of leukocyte count--their toxicity being, however, lower than that of sarcolysine in parallel experiments.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Retroperitoneal sarcomas are rare malignant tumors with an aggressive course of disease and high local recurrence rate. Local disease is the main cause of death. A retrospective study was undertaken to evaluate the results of aggressive surgical treatment in a series of patients of primary and recurrent retroperitoneal sarcomas. PATIENTS AND METHODS: From 1975 to 2000, 155 patients with retroperitoneal tumors were operated on at the Institute of Oncology, Ljubljana. Patients with fibromatosis and children less than 16 years were excluded from further calculation. Out of the rest 139 patients, 102 patients had localized retroperitoneal sarcoma, and 37 patients had retroperitoneal sarcoma with distant metastases Leiomyosarcoma was the most common type of histology, followed by liposarcoma and schwannoma. Their referral status was as follow: 56 had primary sarcoma, 20 residual sarcoma after operation elsewhere and 26 already recurrent sarcoma. Our treatment approach was aggressive. We removed surgically primary tumor, recurrent sarcoma and metastases, whenever possible. To this end, we performed, 235 operations for retroperitoneal sarcomas on 139 patients (up to 8 operations on 1 patient). RESULTS: Complete resection was done in 97 of 102 patients with localized sarcoma (resectability rate 95%); in 55 patients, R0 resection was made, in 42 patients, R1 resection, in 3 patients, debulking procedure, and in 2 patients biopsy alone. In 118, patients at least one organ was resected completely or partially en bloc with tumor. The 5-, 10-, and 15-year survivals of patients with localized sarcoma were 52%, 36%, and 22%, respectively. The 5-year survival of patients with metastases was 12% (P = 0.0002), the 5- and 10-year survival rates of patients with R0 resection were 75% and 64%, respectively, and of those with R1 resection, 25% and 8%, respectively (0 < 0.00001). High tumor grade was associated with poor survival. The 5-year local recurrence rate of patients with primary sarcoma and of those with locally recurrent sarcoma was 37% and 71%, respectively (P = 0.04). After the first local recurrence, the 5- and 10-year survival rates were 42% and 26%, after the second local recurrence 45% and 22%, after the third local recurrence 43% and 11%, and after the fourth local recurrence 51% and 17%, respectively. CONCLUSION: Complete surgical resection without microscopic residuum and contamination is likely to offer the best chances for long-term survival. Until there are no other treatment modalities, aggressive surgery for recurrent sarcoma is recommended.
