[The role of oxygen-dependent processes in the pathogenesis of acute parotitis in surgical diseases of the abdominal organs].

Blood levels of lipid peroxidation products, glutathion enzymatic and nonenzymatic antioxidants were measured in 58 patients with parotid gland involvement in acute surgical diseases of the abdominal organs. The authors prove the predominance of free-radical processes in the mechanisms of cellular injury initiated by inflammation mediators and proteolytic enzymes. A conclusion is made on the necessity of altering the methods of prevention and therapy of acute postoperative parotitis.

Determination of infectivity of transforming avian sarcoma virus and parotitis virus in fibrin-embedded monolayer cultures.

A sensitive and reproducible technique for titration of transforming avian sarcoma virus, Rous sarcoma virus (RSV), in chick embryo cell monolayers embedded between two layers of a solid fibrin coagulum was developed. The foci of RSV-transformed fibrinolysis-exhibiting cells locally attacked the surrounding fibrin and were identifiable as plaque-like cell-free areas of retraction easily scored against the background of cells stained with neutral red. In comparison to the conventional assay in agar, the assay in fibrin proved more sensitive and less time-consuming. The titration technique in fibrin was also used for plaquing a cytopathogenic virus, parotitis virus, but the titration by conventional plaque assay in agar and the technique in fibrin yielded similar results in this case.

Ultrastructural observations on the parotitis autoimmunica in the NZB/NZW hybrid mice.

The lesions of the spontaneously occurring sialoadenitis in the parotid gland of New Zealand Black/New Zealand White (NZB/NZW) hybrid mice were studied with the light microscope and the electron microscope. The inflammatory mononuclear cell infiltrates of the glands observed adjacent to glandular vessels and ducts were found to consist of several different cell types. Lymphoid cells (large, medium sized and small lymphocytes) were the most common, but plasma cells, histiocytes and macrophages were also encountered. Furthermore lymphoid cells were frequently observed inside the basement membrane of acini as well as INTERcalated ducts. Evidence of cell damage of the epithelium invaded by lymphoid elements included loss of cytoplasmic density, vesiculation of the endoplasmic reticulum, the appearance of cytoplasmic vacuoles, and cellular lysis. All the animals studied displayed moderate to advanced glomerular, wire-loop lesions in the kidneys. The light and electron microscopic findings indicate that the parotitis in NZB/NZW mice is basically a vasculitis. Duct cell proliferation and epimyo-epithelial island formation, which are common features in Sjögren's syndrome, are totally lacking in the material studied.

Toxic epidermal necrolysis following morbilli-parotitis-rubella vaccination.

We present the first reported case of toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) caused by morbilli-parotitis-rubella (MPR) vaccine. A 13-year-old girl developed TEN 7 days after she received live, attenuated, triple MPR vaccine. The history of drug intake and any illness was negative. At admission the patient was acutely ill with high fever. The whole body was erythematous. The epidermis was wrinkled and the Nikolsky sign was positive. Numerous erosions were present on the lips and genital region. On the seventh day of illness, the eruption involved 80% of the skin. Systemic corticosteroid therapy was not employed. The skin and mucosal defects completely epithelized by the end of the third week of illness. Mild keratoconjunctivitis sicca remained because of permanent cup cell damage.

[Efficiency of revaccination against epidemic parotitis and immunological safety].

Seventy-eight children aged 6-7 years were subcutaneously revaccinated with L-3 live mumps vaccine. The vaccine is slightly reactogenic and completely safe. The level of antibodies increased on day 10 postvaccination in 80% of children with initially low antibody titers. Subcutaneous revaccination resulted in appearance of anti-parotitis antibodies in nasal secretions of 60% and in the saliva of 20% children, this indicating sufficiently high immunogenic activity of the vaccine.

[Incidence of epidemic parotitis in different countries].

The authors analyzed the incidence of epidemic parotitis in various countries in 1960--1969 on the basis of the data published by the WHO. It can be supposed that there was no significant difference in the morbidity in various countries and that discrepancy in the official data of individual countries was apparently caused by the errors in recording. In the majority of the countries morbidity curve was fluctuating in character with a 4--5-year periodicity. In the countries of the northern hemisphere the greatest number of cases occurred in spring, and in the southern--in autumn. Monthly distribution of cases during the years with a high and low morbidity level displayed no significant changes.

[Secondary autoimmune hemolytic anemia caused by epidemic parotitis virus].

UNLABELLED: We report a case of mumps virus (VM) caused secondary autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA). A 12-year-old boy was hospitalized at Paediatric Clinic of Sarajevo because of haemolytic anaemia followed by disturbed consciousness. Idiopathic hemolytic anemia was diagnosed on the basis of anamnesis, detailed clinical examination and laboratory analysis. The boy responded well to the therapy (corticosteroides, immunoglobulines, transfusions of red blood cells without buffy coat) with improvement of general condition and clinical aspect. Ninth day since the beginning of illness, firstly one than another parotide gland were enlarged, painful, followed by swallow problem and erythema of Stensen's duct. Epidemic parotitis were diagnosed on the basis of high amylasa in serum and urine. CONCLUSION: AIHA could be seen as primary disease. But, in paediatric population it is more often only one manifestation of underlying disease which we should search for.

[Edema in acute diffuse glomerulonephritis, rheumatic peliosis and epidemic parotitis].

The Authors present a substantial series of infant APING in which the venous blood gas analysis shows poor use of oxygen, due to a probably reduced cellular combustion associated with low pCO2, high pH, which are characteristic of arterial blood travelling through anastomotic paths and preferential channels at the microcirculation level. They emphasize the contemporaneous increase in volemia, even with oedema present, and the poor permeation of the capillary wall found with the Landis test, contrary to what happens in glomerulonephrosis with minimal changes which features increased systematic capillary permeation with hypovolemia. The look of the oedema, together with the hypervolemia, led to the suspicion that the nephritic oedema was a sign of mainly intracellular oedema. In the opinion of the Authors these nephritic forms would seem to show systemic cellular respiratory suffering sensitive to the action of chlorpromazine, which has also dealt swiftly and cleanly with the oligoanuresis. The Authors consider 52 cases of Schöenlein-Henoch vasculitis which showed very rapid detumescence of periarticular swelling and those on the back of the hands and feet, as well as the disappearance of skin petechias and melena following treatment with chlorpromazine. They also mention two cases of Kawasaki's disease which seemed to react favorably to the combination of the action of chlorprmazine with acetylsalicylic acid. The effects obtained with chlorpromazine in 27 cases of epidemic parotitis with periscialoadenitis elastic tumescence are reported, with the focus on the reduction of the perisalivary tumescence. It is important to point out the very rapid disappearance of epigastrial pain, probably pancreatic in origin.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

[Biochemical findings in proteincomposition of secretions of human malignant parotid tumours, chronic parotitis and sialadenoses (author's transl)].

In comparison to former investigations in pleomorphic adenoms and Wharthin tumours in the present paper secretion of IgA, lysozyme in correlation to flowrate and total secretion in glands with malignant tumours, inflammations and Sialadenosis were estimated. Thereby 12 patients with malignomas of the parotid gland, 11 patients with chronic parotitis and 12 with sialadenoses were examined. The following results were found: 1. The concentration of protein, IgA and Lysozym is significantly higher than in normal glands and in glands with pleomorphic adenomas and Wharthin tumours. 2. Differentialdiagnosis of Sialadenitis and Sialadenosis of parotid glands is possible by estimating the examined parameters. Thereby in glands with sialadenosis flowrate is higher than in normal glands, and significant lower in glands with sialadenitis. Moreover concentrations of IgA and Lysozyme and protein in glands with sialadenitis are evaluated.

[Study of the effect of parotitis vaccine on DNA repair in human lymphocytes].

The effect of parotitis vaccine virus (strain L-3) on the DNA repair synthesis induced by 4-nitroquinoline-1-oxide has been studied. The efficiency of the repair synthesis depends on individual properties of the human body, viral multiplicity and concentration of the mutagen. A two-fold increase in DNA repair synthesis was obtained after infection of cells with low viral multiplicity (0.001 HADU50 per cell) and using 2.5 x 10(-7) M concentration of the mutagen A ten-fold increase in mutagen concentration affecting the infected cells was accompanied by the inhibition of DNA repair synthesis. Lymphocytes from children studied 7 days after vaccination by the attenuated virus did not reveal any changes in DNA repair synthesis as compared with the cells from nonvaccinated children.

[Vaccination against epidemic parotitis].

Parotitis is usually a mild illness infrequently associated with severe complications, such as encephalitis, deafness or orchitis. The early studies of mumps vaccine (1940-1950) led to the development of killed virus preparations, which offered quite weakly protective immunity. Subsequently, attenuated live virus vaccines became available. These vaccines are more immunogenic and can be used mixed with measles and rubella vaccines. The widespread use of mumps vaccine in the United States has caused a dramatic reduction of the disease, with concomitant decrease of its complications. Although this may be explained by the vaccine-induced seroconversion (in over 95% of cases), the duration of protection is still unclear, since it is theoretically possible that after mumps immunization the infection could occur in older age-groups.

[Chromosome changes in the blood lymphocytes compared to the strength of the immunity in parotitis virus infection and vaccination].

Alterations of chromosomes in T-lymphocytes of peripheral blood reflected their participation in immune reactions. The associative index of acrocentric chromosomes in T-lymphocytes depended on their proliferative and migratory activity in the organism. The degree of cytogenetic and serological alterations in patients with parotitis was higher than in those having a contact and vaccinated children.

[Humoral immunity in epidemic parotitis].

The authors have studied the behaviour of the Immunoglobulins and of the hemoagglutination-inhibiting and complement-fixing antibodies in 9 subjects suffering from a complicated form of parotitis and coming from the same epidemic focus. A considerable movement of antibodies was noticed, while contrary to the findings of other authors, an increase in the IgA was not evident.
