[Psychological existential orientation and health oriented quality of life of inpatients].

The desire and necessity for psychosomatic support were investigated in a gynecological ward of the University of Dresden clinic. Data on anxiety, depression, physical complaints, physical as well as psychological quality of life were collected. The 392 examined women were admitted to the hospital because of gynecological, obstetric or oncological diseases. 39.5 % of the examined patients expressed a desire for psychosomatic support during their stay. Anxiety and depression levels of these patients were higher and the psychological quality of life level lower than for those without the desire for psychosomatic support. Comparing gynecological, obstetric with oncological patients the latter show higher levels of depression and lower psychological quality of life. In contrast the physical quality of life is the lowest for obstetric patients. Our results show that inpatients of a gynecological clinic are physically and psychologically impaired and have a high desire for psychosomatic support.

Is spacing behaviour coupled with predation causing the microtine density cycle? A synthesis of current process-oriented and pattern-oriented studies.

Current ecological information on periodically fluctuating microtine populations are demonstrated to support a hypothesis involving both predation and intrinsic self-regulation as necessary and sufficient factors for explaining the "microtine density cycle'. The structure of the cyclic time series is largely two dimensional with strong delayed density dependence. Together with recent field studies on rodent demography, our modelling suggests that trophic interaction is a likely candidate to generate the dimensionality observed for northern microtine rodent dynamics. It is shown that the trophic interaction must be fairly strong. This suggests that specialist predation is the most likely one among the classes of trophic interactions. We also argue that some - but not too strong - self-regulation must occur to generate the structure of the available time series on northern European microtines.

Schizophrenia. A comparative trial of community orientated and hospital orientated psychiatric care.

Sixty-five schizophrenic patients presenting for admission were randomly allocated into two groups. Control patients received standard hospital care and after-care. Experimental patients were not admitted if this could be avoided; instead they were taken back to the community by the Community Treatment Team who provided them and their relatives with comprehensive community treatment and a 24-h crisis service. During the 12 months study period 68% of the schizophrenic patients in the experimental group were not admitted; 10% were admitted two or more times and for 5 weeks or longer. All the schizophrenic patients in the control group were admitted--two-thirds or more times and for 5 weeks or longer. It was feasible to treat most schizophrenic patients in the community. Community treatment was considered by patients and their relatives to be the more satisfactory and helpful form of treatment and achieved a superior clinical outcome.
