[Henryk Jordan's activity as a member of the Galitzian Parliament in the years 1895-1901].

The activity of Henryk Jordan (1842-1907) as a Member of Parliament focused on two problems: the functioning of the medical care system in Galitzia and problems of education. He wanted to improve health of people living in Galitzia by making easier the access of doctors, introducing the sanitary legislation of 1891 and increasing the number of provincial and mental hospitals. As far as education is concerned he supported the policy of school authorities. Jordan considered all the problems from the point of view of national interest, the realisation of which was possible with the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

Jordan Left-Right Reversal Test: an analysis of visual reversals in children and significance for reading problems.

The Jordan Left-Right Reversal Test (JLRRT) was first published in 1974 (1) as a convenient measure of symbol reversals in children. A current revision of the test, based on 3,000 children, showed error scores to be inversely related to age and sex. Learning disabled children and a group of below average readers made significantly more errors, indicating that visual reversals are dysfunctional for reading skills.

Enhanced detection of respiratory syncytial virus by shell vial in children hospitalised with respiratory illnesses in northern Jordan.

During the period between November 1997 and May 1998, a total of 350 nasopharyngeal aspirates were obtained from children admitted to the Respiratory Disease Unit at Princess Rahma Hospital, northern Jordan, and diagnosed clinically as suffering from respiratory tract infections. Nasopharyngeal aspirates were investigated for the presence of respiratory syncycial virus (RSV) by using shell vial (SV) culture assay, conventional culture assay, and direct immunofluorescence assay. Out of 350 nasopharyngeal aspirates, 101(28.9%) were found positive by any of SV, conventional culture, and immunofluorescence; 91 (90.1%) by SV, 87(86.1%) by culture, and 83(82.2%) by immunofluorescence. The maximum number of virus isolations was noted in children below the age of 1 year and was associated with bronchiolitis. SV assay showed the highest sensitivity (94.3%) and specificity (96.9%) for detecting RSV from nasopharyngeal aspirates. These results emphasise the importance of SV culture assay for diagnosis of RSV, although immunofluorescence is a valuable, rapid diagnostic assay.

Colorectal cancer in Jordan and Nova Scotia: a comparative epidemiologic and histopathologic study.

A comparative study of colorectal adenocarcinoma was undertaken among the populations of Jordan and Nova Scotia, Canada. The incidence of this cancer was 13 (colon 6, rectum 7) and 53 (colon 31, rectum 22) per 100,000 males aged 35--64 years, respectively. Colonic tumors (excluding rectosigmoid) showed left-sided preponderance in Jordanians and right-sided preponderance in Nova Scotians. Age average at diagnosis was 49 years in Jordanians (colon 47 years and rectum 50 years) and 66 years in Nova Scotians (colon 67 years and rectum 63 years), with peaks in the fifth and seventh decades and a male to female ratio of 1.3:1 and 1:1, respectively. The mucinous type accounted for 31 and 13% of colorectal adenocarcinomas in Jordanians and Nova Scotians, respectively, of which the signet-cell type accounted for 14 and 2% of the total number, respectively. The actual incidence rate of mucinous carcinoma, however, was higher among Nova Scotians. In both groups, mucinous carcinoma showed predilection for females and rectal signet-cell carcinoma showed bias toward younger females. The authors believe that the significantly different epidemiologic and morphologic features of colorectal cancer demonstrated in these two communities could shed light on possible etiologic influences, such as dietary habits or other environmental factors.

Diversity of Bacillus thuringiensis in different habitats of northern Jordan.

A survey of Bacillus thuringiensis was conducted for 17 locations in Northern Jordan representing 12 different habitats. Eighty isolates were identified as B. thuringiensis in the majority of the tested samples. Results showed that soils contaminated with the slaughterhouses waste materials had the highest content of spore-forming bacteria [(4.05-2.2) 10(7) CFU/g)] and B. thuringiensis [(4.05-7.9) 10(7) CFU/g)] with a (5.5%-14.9%) and (5.2%-7.7%) of the total viable bacterial count, respectively. These bacteria were more abundant in soils contaminated with such animal by-products.

Molecular characterization of local Bacillus thuringiensis strains recovered from Northern Jordan.

A total of 80 isolates of Bacillus thuringiensis were recovered from different habitats of Northern Jordan. These isolates were grouped into three classes based on crystal morphology (spherical, bipyramidal, and both bipyramidal and cuboidal). The isolates that produced spherical crystals were the most common and the most toxic to diptera. SDS-PAGE analysis of the isolates and some reference strains with similar crystal morphology showed similar protein profiles with heterogeneous multiple protein components. The plasmid DNA content of the isolates in comparison with B. thuringiensis serovar israelensis gave a similar single intense DNA band.

Lung functions in phosphate miners in Jordan: a pilot study.

Phosphate mining and processing is a major industry in Jordan. In this study of 56 workers in this industry, there was significant occurrence of cough, chronic bronchitis, and abnormal spirometry among smokers (p less than 0.1). There was no correlation between the spirometry, A-aDO2, and chest x-ray changes in this occupational group. Smoking was noted to be more detrimental to these workers than was their occupational exposure. Many parameters must be examined when evaluating this pneumoconiosis.

The epidemiology and clinical outcome of hepatitis D virus (delta) infection in Jordan.

The epidemiology and clinical outcome of hepatitis D viral infection in HBsAg-positive acute hepatitis, chronic liver disease, primary hepatocellular carcinoma and the symptomless carrier state was studied in Jordan. The prevalence of hepatitis D viral infection was significantly higher in patients with chronic liver disease (18/79, 23%) and acute hepatitis (17/108, 16%) than in symptomless HBsAg carriers (2/136, 2%). The highest prevalence of hepatitis D viral infection was found in patients with primary hepatocellular carcinoma (10/15, 67%) who were also significantly older than such patients without hepatitis D viral infection. Antihepatitis D virus IgM was detected persistently in 83% of patients with antihepatitis D virus-positive chronic liver disease and transiently in 41% of patients with acute hepatitis. A trend to increased mortality was observed in acute hepatitis D viral superinfection (25%) compared to hepatitis D viral coinfection (0%) and to antihepatitis D virus-negative HBsAg-positive acute hepatitis (4%). In patients with established chronic liver disease, however, neither survival nor histological parameters of disease activity were significantly different in the antihepatitis D virus-positive and antihepatitis D virus-negative groups. While the early stage of hepatitis D viral superinfection is associated with increased mortality, it appears that in patients with late-stage chronic liver disease, severe histological activity subsides, and survival is no longer influenced by the factor of hepatitis D viral infection. However, primary hepatocellular carcinoma appears to complicate the course of those antihepatitis D virus-positive patients surviving beyond this stage.

Enteroviral meningitis in Northern Jordan: prevalence and association with clinical findings.

During the summer-autumn of 1999, 390 specimens of cerebrospinal fluid were taken from infants and children younger than 15 years of age. They were suspected of having meningitis and were admitted to Princess Rahma Hospital, Northern Jordan. They were investigated for the presence of enteroviruses using shell vial culture and indirect immunofluorescence assays. Most cases (46.9%) occurred in children younger than 1 year of age in which males represented 71.9%. The common symptoms were fever, vomiting, and headache. Enteroviruses were isolated from 32 (8.2%) cases, coxsackievirus B types 2, 4, and 5 from 15 (46.9%) cases, and echovirus 9 (31.3%) was the most common identified serotype. The virus isolation rate was directly proportional to the number of leukocytes in the cerebrospinal fluid. However, enteroviral isolation was demonstrated in 4 (12.5%) of 32 cerebrospinal fluid specimens without pleocytosis. Leukocyte differential count revealed a predominance of polymorphonuclear cells in 71.4% of the cases. Hospitalization ranged from 1 day to 25 days with a mean of 7 days. The majority of enterovirus-infected patients (88.9%) were treated with at least one type of antibiotic. These results emphasize the importance of shell vial culture assay for diagnosing enteroviruses, especially in laboratories that do not have access to advanced techniques such as polymerase chain reaction.

King Solomon's miners--starvation and bioaccumulation? An environmental archaeological investigation in Southern Jordan.

Copper mining and smelting were important activities in various predesert wadis during the Iron Age, Nabatean, Roman, and Byzantine periods in southern Jordan and major spoil tips together with slag heaps remain as a legacy of such enterprises. Barley has grown in the area for a prolonged period and currently wild barley plants are affected by toxic cations, which reduce their yields. It is considered that such plants provide an adequate model to assess how similar plants would have performed, in terms of productivity, in the past. The population of miners/slaves, guards, etc., would have been subject to bioaccumulation of heavy metals, which conceivably would have led to detrimental effects on their health. Inhalation and ingestion of particulate pollutants cannot be discounted. It is argued that the population may have been further weakened as a consequence of food shortage, due to reduced plant productivity, as cereals are important foods for both humans and the animals upon which they are dependent. A sizeable mining community could only have been maintained by large-scale importation of food or a massive intensification of agricultural activity.

Keratinophilic fungi on the hair of goats from the West Bank of Jordan.

The mycoflora of the hair in 178 goats from the West Bank of Jordan was analysed and the frequency of occurrence and the relative importance value for the different keratinophilic fungi found were calculated. One hundred and seven species which belong to 38 genera were isolated. Thirty six of these species were either well recognised agents of mycoses (Trichophyton mentagrophytes, T. verrucosum, and M. nanum), or have been frequently isolated from human and animal lesions (Arthroderma spp., Acremonium kiliense, Alternaria alternata, Aspergillus flavus, Cladosporium carionii, and several other species). These potentially pathogenic fungal species comprised 66.9% of all keratinophilic fungi found on the hair of goats. The role of this animal as a reservoir for dermatophytes and other potentially pathogenic fungi is discussed.

Keratinophilic fungi on sheep hairs from the West Bank of Jordan.

The mycoflora of the hair in 285 sheep from the West Bank of Jordan was analysed and the frequency of occurrence and the relative importance value for different fungal species found were calculated. Ninety six species which belong to 36 genera were isolated. Forty one of these species were either well-known agents of animal and human mycoses (Trichophyton verrucosum, T. mentagrophytes, Microsporum nanum, M. canis, and others), or have been isolated from human and animal lesions (Arthroderma cuniculi, A. curreyi, Chrysosporium tropicum, Acremonium kiliense, Aphanoascus fulvuscens, Aspergillus versicolor, Paecilomyces lilacinus, Scopulariopsis brevicaulis, and others). These pathogenic fungi comprised 75.4% of all fungi recovered from the hair of sheep. This animal seems to represent an adequate reservoir for several dermatophytes and several potentially pathogenic fungi.

Isolation of keratinophilic fungi from the floor dust of Arab kindergarten schools in the West Bank of Jordan.

The keratinophilic mycoflora of floor dust of seventy two classrooms in 24 kindergarten schools (children aged 2-5) in the city of Nablus was studied using a hair-baiting technique. The study was aimed at the evaluation of extent of diffusion of keratinophilic fungi in this environment in relation to human presence and the age of children in order to determine their role and impact in the epidemiology of human dermatophytoses. Thirty three species were isolated. A large proportion of these species are either well-known human and animal mycotic agents or have been isolated frequently from human and animal lesions. These pathogenic and potentially pathogenic fungi comprised about 85.8% of all keratinophilic fungal isolates found in the classroom dust. The results of this investigation have also been discussed in respect to previous studies on human dermatophytoses in the West Bank of Jordan.

Incidence of dermatophytosis in Jordan with special reference to tinea capitis.

Clinical data on 1068 cases of dermatophytosis as well as mycological data on 382 of these cases seen from March 1983 to September 1984 are reported. Tinea cruris was present in 34.1%, with Trichophyton rubrum and Epidermophyton floccosum isolated from 31% and 25% respectively. Tinea corporis was found in 17.9% of all patients of dermatophytosis with T. tonsurans responsible in 30.8%. Tinea pedis and Tinea unguium were present in 7.2% and 2% respectively, T. rubrum being the main causative agent; nail involvement was present in 27.3% of these cases. Tinea capitis was observed in 38.7% of 1068 dermatophytosis cases with T. violaceum and M. canis causing 48% and 32% of all T.C. cases respectively. The dermatophytic flora of the West Bank of Jordan apparently comprises about 14 dermatophytes, T. violaceum being the predominant agent of infection (in more than 34%). Other most common agents found in this survey were M. canis, T. rubrum, E. floccosum, T. schoenleini, T. tonsurans, and T. mentagrophytes.

Further studies on prevalence of hydatidosis in slaughtered animals from North Jordan.

Examination of 471 sheep, 118 goats, 157 cattle and 56 camels slaughtered in abattoirs in North Jordan was carried out during March-May 1984. Drought conditions that prevailed during the preceding winter led to slaughtering old female sheep (greater than or equal to 4 years) due to scarcity of food, which allowed us to analyse the prevalence of hydatidosis in various age groups of sheep. An overall infection rate of 27.8, 1.7, 5.8 and 10.7 percent was found in sheep, goats, cattle and camels, respectively. The infection rate was as low as 1.5 percent in male and 1.9 percent in female sheep under 2 years of age. However, the rate of hydatid infection increased with age and reached as high as 63.7 percent in ewes 4 years of age and older. The percentage of animals with fertile cysts was also highest in sheep (68.7 percent of infected animals) and increased with age reaching 100 percent in ewes which were 10 years of age or older. Analysis of all cysts recovered from the livers and lungs of infected ewes from various age groups revealed a sharp increase in the mean total number of cysts in age groups over 8 years of age. The fertility rate of the cysts in the liver was significantly greater in ewes 6 years old or more (64.8--78.6 percent) than in younger age groups (8.7-46.2 percent). In the lung, the fertility rate increased progressively with age reaching as high as 97.9 percent in ewes 10 years old or more. These findings of high infection and fertility rates of hydatid disease in sheep, particularly of older age groups, prompt plans for further epidemiological studies and control programmes.

In vitro culture of the strobilar stage of Echinococcus granulosus of sheep and donkey origin from Jordan.

Protoscolices of Echinococcus granulosus isolated from hydatid cysts of sheep and donkeys in Jordan were cultured in vitro using a modified diphasic culture system. Protoscolices from these two sources manifested differences in the mode of development, evagination and growth rates. Protoscolices isolated from sheep cysts grew in vitro in the polyzoic direction up to the three- to four-segmented mature worms, reaching a length of 2.9 mm. In contrast, donkey protoscolices failed to develop beyond the early stages, even after 67 days of culturing. On prolonged culturing, few worms of donkey origin reached the banding and segmentation stages, attaining a maximal length of 1.6 mm at periods ranging between 81 and 114 days of culturing. None of these segmented worms showed genital differentiation or analgen. The evagination and growth rates of protoscolices isolated from donkey liver cysts were compared with those obtained from sheep liver or lung cysts. The most significant difference in these rates occurred at the commencement of the segmentation stage. Differences in the development, growth and evagination rates observed between the donkey and sheep forms may reflect the strain variation of E. granulosus in this country.

Intestinal cestodes of stray dogs in Jordan.

Five species of cestodes namely Echinococcus granulosus, Taenia hydatigena, Taenia pisiformis, Taenia ovis and Dipylidium caninum were recovered post mortem from 120 out of 173 stray dogs collected from the 5 governorates of Jordan during the period June 1979 to November 1980. Twenty-five of the examined dogs (14%) were found to be infected with E. granulosus, 79 (46%) with T. hydatigena, 14 (8%) with T. pisiformis and 5 (3%) with T. ovis. Dipylidium caninum was encountered in 33 (19%) of the examined dogs and infection with this parasite was significantly higher in males than in females. The parasites, except for D. caninum which was encountered in the ileum, were almost exclusively recovered from the duodenum and the jejunum. Single, double and triple infections with those cestodes were recorded.

Prevalence of hormone receptors and HER2/neu in breast cancer cases in Jordan.

The management and prognosis of breast cancer nowadays require the evaluation of Estrogen (ER), Progesterone Receptors (PR) and HER2/neu. Ethnic variation in the expression of these receptors is well documented. The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of ER, PR and HER2/neu among Jordanian women with breast cancer of ductal and lobular types. A retrospective analysis was performed on 267 cases of breast cancer referred for treatment at King Hussein Cancer Center, Jordan between the period of June 2003 and June 2004. Standard immune stains were used for evaluation of hormone receptors and HER2/neu. In addition, evaluation of HER2/neu was done by FISH in selected cases. Of these 267 cases, 240 (89.9%) were ductal carcinomas of various histological grades, 122 (50.8%) of which were ER-positive, 138 (57.5%) PRpositive and 42 (17.5%) HER2/neu-positive. Twentytwo (8.2%) of all cases were lobular carcinomas, 15 (68%) of which were ER-positive, 20 (90.9%) PRpositive and 3 (13.6%) HER2/neu-positive. Five (1.9%) of the total cases were of mixed lobular and ductal types, 4 (80%) of which were ER-positive, 3 (60%) PR-positive and none were positive for HER2/neu. The prevalence of hormone receptor positivity in breast cancer of Jordanian women is lower than that of the western populations and close to other populations such as the Chinese and the minor ethnic groups of Northern America (African Americans).
