Two major steroid spirostanol glycosides (oligospirostanosides): deltoside (melting point, 296 degrees C, [alpha]D10:-90.8 degrees C (c 5.0,Py) and dioscine (melting point, 285-285 degrees C, [alpha]D10:-106.5 degrees C (c 5.0, Py) and a minor glycoside diosgenin-3-O-alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1-->2)-beta-D-glucopyranoside were isolated form cell suspensions of Discorea deltoidea after fermentation with beta-glucosidase. The cell suspensions contained these glycosides as the furostanol analogs (oligofurostanosides) deltoside, protodioscine, and delta 5-furosten-3 beta,22,26-triol-3-O-alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1-->2)-beta-D- glucopyranoside. The native oligofurostanosides isolated from D. deltoidea cell suspensions have a high biological activity and can be used as phytobiostimulators in medicine, veterinary, and agriculture.
The suspension cells of D. zingiberensis were immobilized with 3% sodium alginate, and then cultured in MS+2, 4-D1.0 + 6-BA 0.1 at 25 degrees C for a long period of time. The culture fluid free from cells was extracted and analyzed by TLC. The result showed that the immobilized cells could secrete the main component of D. zingiberensis--diosgenin, but not consecutively.
Experiments were carried to test the fungitoxic effect of steroid glycosides--deltoside and deltonine--(representatives of spiro and furostanol saponins) on the growth of conidia F. solani and zoospores Ph. infestans. Both saponins inhibited the growth of test-objects in a different degree. A correlation between the membranolytic effect of the tested compounds on the mobile envelope-free zoospores of F. solani and their capacity to form cholesterol complexes was established. There was no direct relationship between the degree of fungal toxicity and membranolytic activity of the compounds.
The present study examined the influence of density of the aerial bulbs in the variables: fat absorption, fry time and yield of the cara-de-rama chips and french fries, as well as organoleptic analysis of fried products. The results showed that there was no differences between the bulbs densities, in the variables examined, except for the moisture of cara-de-rama chips. In the organoleptical analysis, the samples did not show significant differences in relation to similar potato products.

The Dioscorea cayenensis - Dioscorea rotundata species complex is the most widely cultivated yam in West Africa. This species complex has been described as deriving from wild yams belonging to the Enanthiophyllum section through domestication by African farmers. To study patterns of yam evolution and to establish phylogenetic relationships existing between wild and cultivated species sampled in Benin, we investigated changes in chloroplast DNA simple sequence repeats (cpSSR) in 148 yam accessions selected to cover the wider possible genetic diversity existing in the country. Dioscorea cayenensis and D. rotundata share the same haplotype. The morphotype "abyssinica" appeared to be subdivided into 2 haplotypes. One of these haplotypes shares the same haplotype with the Dioscorea cayenensis - Dioscorea rotundata species complex and with morphotypes praehensilis, suggesting that they might belong to the same species. Relationships among sections Lasiophyton, Macrocapaea, Opsophyton, and Enanthiophyllum were clarified, and some taxonomic changes within the Enanthiophyllum section were suggested. Dioscorea minutiflora, D. smilacifolia, and D. burkilliana might be considered as 1 single genetic group, and they are suspected of belonging to the same species.
OBJECTIVE: To probe and identify the ultramicro characteristics of trachea inner walls(TIW) of six species of Sect. Stenophora, i.e., Rhizoma Dioscoreae Spongiosae, Rhizoma Dioscoreae Hypoglaucae, Rhizoma Dioscoreae Futschauensis, Rhizoma Dioscoreae Gracillimae, Rhizoma Dioscoreae Tokoro and Rhizoma Dioscoreae Zingiberensis, by scanning electron microscope (SEM). METHOD: The vertical microscopical sections are stuck on the platform of species and metal plated. TIW were observed and photographed by SEM. RESULT: The ultramicro characteristics of TIW, i.e., the smoothnesss of TIW, the existence of separation bands, the density, arrangement types, shapes and sizes of pits, etc., can be seen clearly under SEM. Further, there exist differences in the ultramicro characteristics of each species. CONCLUSION: The above six species of crude drugs can be identified according to their ultramicro characteristics of TIW. SEM can be used to study the ultramicro characteristics of crude drug rhizomas thus creating a new area for identifying crude drugs.
