Mature osteocytes behaviour in a repletion period: the occurrence of osteoplastic activity.

The occurrence of osteoplastic activity in adult osteocytes from the femoral cortex of laying hens previously kept on a hypocalcaemic diet was studied after return of the animals to a calcium-rich alimentation. The following techniques were used: 1) tetracycline labelling of new calcifying matrix; 2) osteoid staining with alcian blue at pH 1.9 or toluidine blue at pH 3.1; 3) electron microscopic observations; 4) autoradiographic evaluation of (3H) proline uptake by osteocytes. Quantitative evaluation of (3H) proline uptake by osteocytes. Quantitative evaluation of the preparations consistently showed indication of osteoplastic activity in at least 20% of the osteocytes with relatively higher values in the metaphysis than in the diaphysis.

[Pain and inflammation of the foot in metabolic osteopathies : new causes of algodystrophy (author's transl)].

Three observations of patients with algodystrophia of the foot are reported. Biologic disorders suggestive of osteomalacia were found in two patients who recovered after receiving vitamin D. Cushing disease was diagnosed in the remaining patient ; again algodystrophia disappeared after specific therapy was given. The few similar cases published in the medical literature are reviewed. Attention is drawn to their misleading nature. Most published cases occurred with osteomalacia or endocrinic osteopathy. Such conditions should be looked for in all patients with apparently primary algodystrophia of a lower limb.

Protrusio acetabuli in osteoporosis and osteomalacia.

Protrusio Acetabuli (PA) occurs in various rheumatic conditions and metabolic bone disorders as a result of bony remodeling in the pelvis. We sought evidence of early PA in patients with biopsy-proven postmenopausal osteoporosis and osteomalacia using a quantitative radiographic index of protrusion. The values in osteoporotic patients were not significantly different from those in controls and did not correlate with bone density measurements. In osteomalacia, the index was significantly increased relative both to the osteoporosis and control groups; early PA was found in 50% of patients with osteomalacia. This simple radiographic measurement may be useful in the differential diagnosis of osteopenia.

Calmodulin activity in corticosteroid-induced osteopenia.

A reproducible high-pressure liquid chromatography assay of calmodulin, a multifunctional calcium-dependent modulating protein, was developed for cartilage and bone by using cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterase activity as the basis for standard curve determination. Calmodulin activity was then measured in rabbits that were made osteopenic by prednisolone injection in an effort to characterize in vivo cellular events. A significant rise in bone calmodulin levels was noted when this data was correlated with osteocyte and osteoblast content by quantitative histomorphometry. This suggests that calmodulin mediates steroid effects on the collagen matrix as well as on calcium homeostasis. Diminished calmodulin levels in weight-bearing cartilage of steroid-treated animals has as yet unresolved significance. Further characterization of calmodulin activity appears warranted in the study of osteopenic states at the subcellular level.

[Man in the condition of weightlessness (author's transl)].

In the space flights by the USA and USSR to date adequate experience has been obtained on the adaptation of man to living conditions in space--with the technical assistance of an artificial protective atmosphere in the space ship or space suit--and to the singular factor of "weightlessness" (microgravity, low gravity) and how he re-adjusts again after returning to a gravitational field. There is no ultimate or absolute physiological barrier for long term space flight--with one exception: decalcification of the skeleton. For short space flights, however, space sickness is a serious disorder.

[Parathyroid gland cancer and hyperparathyroidism].

A patient with an endocrine-active carcinoma of the parathyroid gland was observed. The typical signs of hyperthyroidism could be seen in the skeletal system. Symptoms of bone and kidney diseases dominated the clinical picture. The symptomatology corresponded to a subchronic primary hyperparathyroidism.
