[Immunodiagnosis of neurocysticercosis: comparative study of antigenic extracts from Cysticercus cellulosae and Taenia crassiceps].

Different antigenic extracts of Taenia solium and Taenia crassiceps were evaluated in connection with the detection of antibodies in patients with neurocysticercosis aimed at selecting immunorelevant antigens for the diagnosis of neurocysticercosis by means of the immunoenzymatic assay and immunoblotting. The vesicular fluid of T. crassiceps proved to be more sensitive (100%) and specific (86%). On using the immunoblotting technique it was also observed that this extract was the most sensitive and specific. Within the protein profile of the antigen the band of 18 kDa was mostly recognized by the serum and cerebrospinal fluid of patients with neurocysticercosis. The vesicular fluid of T. crassiceps represents an alternative in the optimization of the diagnosis of neurocysticercosis in the serum and cerebrospinal fluid and in the substitution of T. solium antigens due to its high sensitivity and specificity and to its easy obtention under controlled laboratory conditions.

Demonstration of scolex in calcified cysticercus lesion using gradient echo with or without corrected phase imaging and its clinical implications.

AIM: This study was performed to determine the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sequence that was best suited to demonstrate the scolex in a calcified lesion and to seek the explanation for the appearance of a negative phase in a calcified scolex on corrected gradient refocused echo (GRE) phase imaging. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-nine patients with single/multiple computed tomography (CT) documented homogeneous calcified lesions and/or calcified scolices in cysts were studied with conventional spin echo and corrected GRE phase imaging. Calcium and different paramagnetic substances from cysticerci scolices of a sample of infected swine muscle were quantified. RESULTS: The scolex could be demonstrated in 29/39 patients with single calcified lesion. GRE imaging with an echo time of 35ms was the only sequence that demonstrated scolex in all these 29 cases. 15/29 patients with a single calcified lesion, in all 10 patients with multiple calcified lesions and infected swine muscle with multiple cysts and calcified scolex, corrected GRE phase imaging showed negative phase in all these scolices. Estimation of minerals from the calcified scolices from the swine muscle showed by spectroscopic techniques 41.2% of the total mineral contents as paramagnetic substances. CONCLUSION: We conclude that GRE imaging is the imaging method of choice for demonstration of the scolex in a CT calcified lesion. The negative phase on corrected GRE phase imaging is due to the presence of large amount of paramagnetic substances.

[Developmental characteristics of Cysticercus cellulosae in the human brain and heart].

The present study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of cysticercosis, to classify the developmental phases of cysticerci found in human brains and hearts, and differentiate these according to the macro and microscopic aspects of the general pathological processes, and to compare the process found in the brains and hearts. Protocols from autopsies performed at the Hospital of the School of Medicine of the Triângulo Mineiro, Uberaba, MG, Brazil, in the period from 1970 to 2000 were reviewed. The prevalence of cysticercosis was verified in 71 cases, of which 53 (74.6%) were encephalic cysticercosis and 18 (25.3%) cardiac cysticercosis. Nineteen cysticerci were analyzed, from 9 brains and 10 hearts. The cysticerci were classified according to their developmental stage: vesicular, colloidal vesicular, granular nodular and calcified nodular, with similarities between the macroscopic and microscopic diagnoses. Among the pathological processes found beta-fibrilosis and endocardial fibroelastosis are underscored. In addition, it was demonstrated that this classification may be applied both to encephalic and cardiac cysticercosis.
