This study is to evaluate whether it is possible to predict living stature from sacral and coccygeal vertebral dimensions. Individual vertebral body heights, sacral height (SH), and sacrococcygeal height (SCH) were recorded from the magnetic resonance images of 42 adult males. Sum of the heights of five sacral vertebrae (sigmaS), the first four coccygeal vertebrae (sigmaC), and the total height of the sacral and the first four coccygeal vertebrae together (sigmaSC) were also recorded. Linear regression equations for stature estimation were produced using the above mentioned variables. The regression equations were constructed and tested by using jack-knife procedure. Statistical analyses indicated that the combined variables (SH, SCH, sigmaS, sigmaC, sigmaSC) were more accurate predictors of stature than the heights of individual vertebrae. The results of the study pointed out that the equations derived from sacrococcygeal dimensions perform somewhat better than ones based on foot and head variables, but worse than those based on long-bone length. As a conclusion, the dimensions of sacral and coccygeal vertebrae could be used for stature estimation when long bones are not available.
Among 75 members of a Danish family, 12 were found with a syndrome not previously described. Clinically, the syndrome consists of low body height and rigid flat feet, with weight-bearing pain in the feet. Radiologically, the deformation of the feet is a medial synostosis between the talus and the calcaneus combined with ankle joint dysplasia. The cause of the syndrome is most probably an autosomal dominant gene with complete penetrance. No linkage was found of the gene to 18 marker genes.
Females who were purely bottle-fed during the first trimenon of life showed a significantly increased incidence of overweight at 15 years of age as compared to those who were purely breast-fed or breast plus bottle-fed. Similar findings were obtained in males. In purely bottle-fed females, furthermore, a significant positive correlation was found between the body weight at 3 months of age and body height at 15 years of age.
The purpose of this study was to determine if the overall body height, as measured by a stadiometer, could be increased by brief episodes of hyperextension rather like a stretch that people frequently employ when arising. The subjects were loaded with 10 kg and the recovery with quiet sitting was compared to hyperextension 'stretches'. It was found that 15 s of hyperextension caused a significant temporary height increase.

Stature and education in 214 pairs of adult brothers and 188 pairs of adult sisters were analysed in order to test the hypothesis that in modern stratified societies upward and downward social mobility is selective with respect to body height. Among the 116 male pairs in which the sibs differed in both education and stature, the proportion of pairs in which the taller sib was the better educated (BE) was significantly higher than the proportion of pairs in which the taller sib was the less well educated (LE) of the two. Mean intra-pair difference in stature between the BE and LE brothers was 1.26 cm, and significantly different from zero. In female pairs similar tendencies were noted but deviations from the null hypothesis were not significant. Implications of these findings are discussed.
215 skulls taken from graves of the 4th to 12th century in southern Germany were cephalometrically evaluated. The correlations of the parameters S-N, PM-SN and PM-ANS were used to develop new formulas for calculating the body height, needing only parts of the skull. Compared with other methods based on the length of bones of the extremities very similar results were obtained.
Cross-sectional data from interviews of a sample of the Swedish population aged 16 to 74 years in 1980-81 were used to obtain information on the relation between father's socioeconomic status during the childhood of the participants and the adult body height of the latter. A difference in height between members of higher and lower socioeconomic groups was found. The difference diminished over falling age but was still noticeable among men born in the early and mid 1950s. The mean difference in height between sons of senior salaried employees and sons of unskilled workers was 2.9 cm. The difference was less for women.
PURPOSE: The aim of the study was to estimate the anthropometric parameters and their relationship to serum levels of IGF-I, IGF-II, IGFBP-3, IGFBP-2 and leptin before and during intensive antineoplastic treatment for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia in children. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In 46 children in median age 6.6 years (range from 1.6 to 16) we evaluated at the time of diagnosis, after protocol I and after intensive treatment, height, body mass index (BMI) and IGF-I, IGF-II, IGFBP-3, IGFBP-2 and leptin. RESULTS: Height SDS lowered in successive points of analysis whereas BMI SDS rose after protocol II. IGF-I SDS was low and similar at each point, IGF-II SDS and IGFBP-3 SDS values augmented progressively and IGFBP-2 SDS was significantly elevated before treatment and lowered (but not normalized) during the therapy. Leptin SDS was elevated, especially after protocol I. CONCLUSION: Leukaemia and its treatment affect directly growth factors, its binding proteins and leptin production leading to growth retardation and overweight.
In 1985 a prospective anthropometric study was started in order to assess the development of newborns and infants. At birth 3301 children were measured and after 36 months again 339 children. From the measures taken, relative measures in percentage to body height were calculated. Within the first 36 months of life clear changes in the proportions could be seen. With the exception of the subscapular skinfold thickness the relative measures in boys are larger than in girls. This means that at this age boys are more robust than girls, although boys have less subcutaneous body fat.
A comparison has been made of a case with 45,X/46,XX/47,XXX mosaicism with some 50 cases in the literature. A significant positive correlation was found between height standard deviation scores of mosaic patients from the literature and the frequency of cells with a normal chromosome constitution (n = 21, rs = 0.552, P < 0.01). In contrast, a significant negative correlation was seen between body height and the frequency of cells with a 45,X constitution (n = 21, rs = -0.594, P < 0.01). There was no significant correlation of height standard deviation score with the 47,XXX cell line (n = 21, rs = -0.353). A patient with a rare chromosomal mosaicism (45,X/46,XX/47,XXX) is described. The diagnosis was first made by chromosome analysis in amniotic cells. The patient showed no symptoms suggestive of Turner syndrome and growth followed the 75th height percentile. Basal and gonadotropin-releasing hormone stimulated gonadotropin levels normalized after age 4.8 years and did not subsequently return to hypergonadotropic levels. In blood lymphocytes, there was an increase in the frequency of cells with a normal chromosome constitution over 9 years. This in vivo cell selection is discussed. Chromosome analysis in skin fibroblasts showed the same triple mosaicism with a similar distribution of cell lines as in blood lymphocytes. In conclusion, statistical evidence was demonstrated that the severity of short stature is correlated with the distribution of cell lines in 45,X/46,XX/47,XXX mosaicism. This finding is of importance for the genetic counselling in cases of prenatal diagnosis of mosaic Turner syndrome.
