[Blood lipids in rats in an animal model of nephropathy].

The blood lipid spectrum of white Wistar rats was investigated in the course of modeling of electrolytic nephropathy. The changes of the serum lipid spectrum were characterized by the increase of triglycerides, total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein cholesterol, the index of atherogenity and by the reduction of high density lipoprotein cholesterol. The decrease of phosphatidylserine, the increase of phosphatidylethanolamine and sphingomyelin and higher degree of saturation of fatty acid composition were detected in the erythrocytic lipids in the blood of the experimental rats. Besides, the abnormalities concerning fatty acids transformations and severe disbalance between the precursors and the inhibitors of the synthesis of eicosanoids were established. The results of the above investigation provide the detection of metabolic disorders in particular components of lipid metabolism in experimental electrolytic nephropathy.

Age, adiposity, blood pressure and blood lipids in a rural New Zealand population.

Multiple regression analysis of data on age, blood pressure, adiposity and blood lipids from a rural New Zealand population of over 1200 adults has been undertaken. The results show that rises in blood lipids over time in the population are independent of age and correlate significantly with adiposity. Thus plasma cholesterol and triglycerides correlate with adiposity (expressed as Quetelet's index or skinfold thickness) in men whereas significant correlation in women was only between adiposity and plasma triglycerides. Systolic and diastolic blood pressure in men was strongly correlated with their plasma triglycerides, but not cholesterol, when the effect of age and adiposity was removed. In women however only a weak correlation was observed between plasma triglycerides and systolic blood pressure. The significance of the findings is discussed.

Relationships between blood pressure, anthropometric characteristics and blood lipids in high- and low-altitude populations from Central Asia.

We studied the relationships between blood pressure, anthropometric characteristics and blood lipids in 72 low altitude (LA) Uighurs (600 m), 91 LA-Kirghizs (900 m), 117 medium altitude (MA) Kazakhs (2100 m) and 94 high altitude (HA) Kirghizs (3200 m). All subjects were male and had a similar age (p = ns, ANOVA; range for all 374 subjects: 18-66 yr). Body weight (Wt), body mass index (BM1) and the sum of four skinfolds (4SF) were significantly lower in HA-Kirghizs than the remaining groups (p < 0.0005, p < 0.0005 and p < 0.05 respectively, ANOVA). However, no difference was found in body fat distribution as detected by waist:hip circumference (WHR) and triceps:subscapular skinfold ratios (TSR; p = ns, ANOVA). Stage 1 hypertension was detected in 18% of LA-Uighurs, 2% of LA-Kirghizs, 4% of MA-Kazakhs and 1% of HA-Kirghizs; stage 2 hypertension was detected in 2% of LA-Uighurs and none of the remaining groups; no subject had stage 3 hypertension (The Joint National Committee on Prevention. Detection, Evaluation and Treatment of High Blood Pressure 1997). Blood cholesterol (CH) and triglycerides (TG) did not differ between groups (p = ns, ANOVA). The relationships between systolic (SBP) or diastolic (DBP) blood pressure and age, Wt, BMI, 4SF, WHR, TSR, CH and TG were independent from altitude (p = ns, ANCOVA). In the pooled sample (n = 374), age explained 1 and 3% of SBP (p < 0.05) and DBP (p < 0.005) variance respectively, Wt was the best predictor of SBP and DBP explaining 11 and 10% of their variance respectively (p < 0.0001) and CH explained 5% of DBP variance (p < 0.0001). In conclusion, hypertension is more frequent in LA- than MA- and HA-subjects from Central Asia. However, anthropometric characteristics and blood lipids do similarly contribute to explain blood pressure in these subjects.

Impact of early dietary intake and blood lipid composition of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids on later visual development.

BACKGROUND: In contrast to human milk, current infant formulas in the United States do not contain omega3 and omega6 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids. This may lead to suboptimal blood lipid fatty acid profiles and to a measurable diminution of visual function in developing term infants. The need for docosahexaenoic acid and arachidonic acid supplementation in the infant diet was evaluated in a double-blind, randomized clinical trial. METHODS: Healthy term infants were randomized to diets of (1) commercial formula, (2) docosahexaenoic acid-enriched formula (0.35% of total fatty acids), or (3) docosahexaenoic acid- (0.36%) and arachidonic acid- (0.72%) enriched formula. Eighty-seven infants completed the 17-week nutritional trial, and 58 were observed until 52 weeks of life. A reference group was exclusively breast fed for at least 17 weeks (n = 29). Outcome measures included electroretinographic responses, visual evoked potentials, and blood fatty acid analysis in infants at birth and at 6, 17, and 52 weeks of age. RESULTS: Commercial formula-fed infants had 30% to 50% lower content of docosahexaenoic acid in total red blood cell lipids during the 17-week feeding trial compared with breastfed infants. Significant differences persisted at the 1-year follow-up. Arachidonic acid content was consistently reduced in the commercial formula group by 15% to 20%. Infants fed long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid-enriched formulas had docosahexaenoic acid and arachidonic acid blood lipid profiles resembling those of human milk-fed infants. Infants receiving this enriched formula had more mature electroretinographic responses than commercial formula-fed infants at 6 weeks of age. Human milk-fed and docosahexaenoic acid-enriched formula-fed infants had better visual acuity than commercial formula-fed infants at both 17 and 52 weeks of age. Early (17-week) fatty acid profiles in blood lipids were correlated with later (52-week) visual function development in study infants. CONCLUSIONS: Results from this clinical trial demonstrate that long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid supplementation of formula in term infants produces blood lipid fatty acid profiles that are similar to those observed in breast-fed infants. This supplementation leads to better visual function later in life (i.e., 1 year of age) than that shown by infants fed commercial formula.

Blood lipid effects of antihypertensive therapy: a double-blind comparison of the effects of methyldopa and propranolol.

Thirty-two middle-aged men with essential hypertension completed a double-blind randomly allocated comparison of the effects of methyldopa versus propranolol on blood lipid levels. After a four-week period on a placebo for each drug, subjects were titrated for the next six weeks with either methyldopa from 500 to 2000 mg/day or propranolol from 80 to 320 mg/day plus a placebo for the other drug until supine diastolic blood pressure was below 90 mm Hg or the ceiling dose was reached. Subjects were then maintained on the achieved drug dose for an additional six weeks and finally switched back to a placebo for each drug for four more weeks. Blood lipid levels were measured twice during each study period and the values averaged and compared. Neither drug significantly affected levels of total plasma cholesterol. However, both drugs reduced high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol levels about 10 per cent and increased the total cholesterol to HDL cholesterol ratio. In addition, propranolol significantly increased plasma triglyceride levels (28.3 per cent). The changes in lipid levels were not dose related. Whether or not these blood lipid changes persist and their possible clinical implication during prolonged therapy remain to be elucidated.

The relationship of cardiorespiratory variables, blood lipids, amount and distribution of fat in middle aged men.

68 middle aged men (43.8 +/- 7.4 years) without apparent health problems were examined. Medical check up, individual and family history, physical performance test on a bicycle ergometer, blood lipid level (total, T-, HDL-, LDL-cholesterol, triglycerides) and anthropometric measurements were executed. No serious health problems and complaints were assessed. Average values of body mass index (BMI = 26.7 +/- 3.4 kg/m2 and the percentage of depot fat (20.8 +/- 4.2%) were increased according to standard values. Waist/hip ratio was 0.9 +/- 0.1. Nearly a quarter of men was evaluated as obese. The results of work load test on a bicycle ergometer showed adequate results, however especially the diastolic blood pressure was increased in 11.5% of men at rest, and in an approximately same number of men there appeared the symptoms of cardiac ischemia after the work load. The prevalence of hypertension according to WHO criteria was 9.6%. TCH was 5.35 +/- 1.04, HDL 1.11 +/- 0.19, and triglycerides 1.81 +/- 0.77 mmol/l. Atherogenic index was 4.9 +/- 1.1. Glycemia was 5.04 +/- 0.66 mmol/l. In more than 20% of men there appeared risk values of blood lipids. -Indices evaluated from anthropometric measurements such as waist/hip ratio correlated significantly with blood lipids (positive correlation: total cholesterol, triglycerides, atherogenic index) and/or the level of physical performance (negative correlation), which indicated the possibility to use them as simple markers of cardiovascular risk in larger population samples examined under field conditions.

Blood lipid and oxidative stress responses to soy protein with isoflavones and phytic acid in postmenopausal women.

BACKGROUND: Postmenopausal women are at risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) as a result of unfavorable blood lipid profiles and increased oxidative stress. Soy protein consumption may help protect against these risk factors. OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to ascertain the effect of the soy protein components isoflavones and phytate on CVD risk in postmenopausal women. DESIGN: In a double-blind 6-wk study, 55 postmenopausal women were randomly assigned to 1 of 4 treatments with soy protein (40 g/d) isolate (SPI): low phytate/low isoflavone (LP/LI); normal phytate/low isoflavone (NP/LI); low phytate/normal isoflavone (LP/NI); or normal phytate/normal isoflavone (NP/NI). Blood lipids (total, LDL, and HDL cholesterol and triacylglycerol) and oxidative stress indexes (protein carbonyls, oxidized LDLs, and 8-iso-prostaglandin-F(2alpha)) were measured at baseline and 6 wk. RESULTS: The oxidative stress indexes were not significantly affected by either phytate or isoflavones. Phytate treatment had a minimal but nonsignificant effect in reducing protein carbonyls and 8-iso-prostaglandin-F(2alpha); the reductions were 6-8% and 4-6% in the NP/LI and NP/NI groups and 1-4% and 3-4% in the LP/LI and LP/NI groups, respectively. Similarly, circulating lipids were not significantly affected by either phytate or isoflavones. The decline in total (6%-7% compared with 2%-4%) and LDL (10%-11% compared with 3%-7%) cholesterol did not differ significantly between the normal- and low-isoflavone groups, respectively. CONCLUSION: In postmenopausal women, neither phytate nor isoflavones in SPI have a significant effect of reducing oxidative damage or favorably altering blood lipids.

Effects of pioglitazone and rosiglitazone on blood lipid levels and glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus: a retrospective review of randomly selected medical records.

BACKGROUND: The antihyperglycemic effects of pioglitazone hydrochloride and rosiglitazone maleate are well documented. The results of clinical trials and observational studies have suggested, however, that there are individual differences in the effects of these drugs on blood lipid levels. OBJECTIVE: The present study evaluated the effects of pioglitazone and rosiglitazone on blood lipid levels and glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. METHODS: This was a retrospective review of randomly selected medical records from 605 primary care practices in the United States in which adults with type 2 diabetes received pioglitazone or rosiglitazone between August 1, 1999, and August 31, 2000. The outcome measures were mean changes in serum concentrations of triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) values. RESULTS: Treatment with pioglitazone was associated with a reduction in mean TG of 55.17 mg/dL, a reduction in TC of 8.45 mg/dL, an increase in HDL-C of 2.65 mg/dL, and a reduction in LDL-C of 5.05 mg/dL. Treatment with rosiglitazone was associated with a reduction in mean TG of 13.34 mg/dL, an increase in TC of 4.81 mg/dL, a reduction in HDL-C of 0.12 mg/dL, and an increase in LDL-C of 3.56 mg/dL. With the exception of HDL-C, the differences in mean changes in lipid parameters between treatment groups were statistically significant (P < 0.001, pioglitazone vs rosiglitazone). Reductions in HbA1c were statistically equivalent between treatments (1.04% pioglitazone, 1.18% rosiglitazone). CONCLUSIONS: Treatment with pioglitazone was associated with greater beneficial effects on blood lipid levels than treatment with rosiglitazone, whereas glycemic control was equivalent between the 2 treatments.

Acute changes in blood lipids and enzymes in postmenopausal women after exercise.

The effectiveness of lifestyle intervention strategies to improve blood lipids in women may be dependent on preexisting cholesterol concentrations. We characterized the effects of cholesterol status on blood lipid, lipoprotein lipid, and lipid regulatory enzyme responses to a single session of aerobic exercise in physically active, postmenopausal women. In this study, blood samples were obtained from 12 women with high cholesterol (HC; > or =200 mg/dl) and 13 women with normal cholesterol (NC; <200 mg/dl), 24 h before (Pre), immediately after (IPE), and 24 and 48 h after an exercise session (treadmill walking at 70% peak oxygen consumption, 400 kcal). We found that repeated-measures analysis revealed the following: 1) preexercise cholesterol differences did not influence the lipid or lipoprotein lipid responses to exercise; 2) for both groups, triglyceride was significantly reduced (-8.5%) after exercise; 3) the concentration profile over time for high-density lipoprotein cholesterol was significant for both groups, first falling at IPE then rising back to Pre levels by 24 h after exercise; 4) the lecithin-cholesterol acyltransferase activity (LCATA) exercise response was group dependent, increasing modestly in the NC group at 24 and 48 h; 5) lipoprotein lipase activity (LPLA) increased at IPE (by 17%) in the HC group only and then fell at 24 and 48 h (by 21%) compared with Pre; and 6) cholesterol ester transfer protein activity was unchanged by exercise. From these findings, we conclude that in postmenopausal women, a single session of endurance exercise elicited a short-term, favorable decrease in triglycerides independent of initial blood cholesterol concentrations. However, LCATA and LPLA postexercise changes were influenced by preexercise cholesterol status.

[The effect of shanzha xiaozhi capsule on the blood lipid and the function of endothelial cells in patients with dislipide mia].

OBJECTIVE: To explore the Mechanism of Shanzha xiaozhi Capsule improving the functions of endonthelial cells in patients with dislipide mia. METHODS: To measurate the blood lipid and the levels of plasma Endothelin (ET) and nitrodi oxide (NO) in 30 patients with dislipide mia before and after taking the Shanzha xiaozhi Capsule, and there were 10 normal persons in control group, which were measured the blood lipid and the levels of ET and NO only one time. RESULTS: After treatment with Shanzha xiaozhi Capsule, the levels of triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), low density lipoprotein cholestero (LDL-C), ET were markedly reduced (P < 0.05), and the levels of NO were obviously elevated (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Shanzha xiaozhi Capsule can reduce blood lipid level and the plasma ET levels, increase the NO levels and the protection to the functions of endothelial cells which might be involved in the mechanisms of against atherosclerosis.

Multicenter retrospective assessment of thiazolidinedione monotherapy and combination therapy in patients with type 2 diabetes: comparative subgroup analyses of glycemic control and blood lipid levels.

BACKGROUND: Thiazolidinediones (TZDs) have contributed to the management of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus as unique insulin-sensitizing agents. When used as monotherapy or in combination therapy, these drugs not only reduce glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA(1c)) levels, but also effect changes in blood lipid concentrations and have the potential to ameliorate cardiovascular disease risk. Although drugs in the TZD class are perceived to be equivalent clinically, prospective and retrospective studies have demonstrated their ability to modify blood lipid levels. OBJECTIVE: We evaluated and compared the effects of pioglitazone and rosiglitazone monotherapy and combination therapy on blood lipid levels and HbA(1c) in patients with type 2 diabetes. METHODS: We conducted a multicenter retrospective chart review of 1115 records of patients with type 2 diabetes who received pioglitazone or rosiglitazone, alone or in combination with other antidiabetic agents, between August 1, 1999, and August 31, 2000. The review was conducted to evaluate pretreatment and posttreatment levels of triglyceride, total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and HbA(1c). RESULTS: All observed demographic characteristics, comorbidities, and concomitant drug use were similar in both treatment cohorts. Of the patients who received pioglitazone, 83% also received >/=1 other antihyperglycemic agent and 59% received some form of antihyperlipidemic therapy. Among those who received rosiglitazone, 81% received concomitant antihyperglycemic medication and 60% received some form of antihyperlipidemic therapy. With pioglitazone, mean levels of serum triglyceride, total cholesterol, and LDL-C decreased and HDL-C increased in most patients, with or without concomitant antihyperglycemic medications; with rosiglitazone, with or without other antidiabetic agents, triglyceride and HDL-C levels decreased, whereas total cholesterol and LDL-C levels increased in most patients. Reductions in HbA(1c) levels and increases in body weight related to each study drug were comparable. CONCLUSIONS: This comparative assessment of pioglitazone and rosiglitazone, based on observational data, reveals that use of these TZDs with other antidiabetic agents was similar in 605 primary care practices in the United States. In both monotherapy and combination treatment regimens, pioglitazone was associated with greater beneficial effects on lipids than was rosiglitazone. Additional studies are needed to determine the long-term outcomes of TZD therapy with concomitant antihyperglycemic medications.

[The CARMEN trial: increased intake of carbohydrates--simple or complex--and unchanged blood lipids in overweight subjects].

INTRODUCTION: The purpose was to investigate the long-term effect of ad libitum low-fat, high-carbohydrate diets with mainly simple or complex carbohydrates on body weight and blood lipids. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A six-months controlled randomised multicentre trial with the participation of five European centres. A total of 398 moderately obese subjects (BMI: 30.4 +/- 2.7 kg/m2, mean +/- SD) were randomised to four groups: Control diet group with normal macronutrient intake, a low-fat/high simple carbohydrate group, a low-fat/high complex carbohydrate group and a seasonal control group. RESULTS: After six months we found a drop in body weight of 1.7 kg (p < 0.05) in the simple and of 2.6 kg (p < 0.001) in the complex carbohydrate group compared with the control diet group. Fat mass decreased by 1.9 kg (p < 0.05) and 2.4 kg (p < 0.001) in the simple and complex carbohydrate group, respectively, compared with the control diet group. There were no significant changes or group differences in fasting blood lipids, glucose, insulin, or leptin. DISCUSSION: The results show that it is favourable to replace dietary fat by carbohydrates (simple or complex) in relation to body weight regulation. No detrimental effects were seen on blood lipids in contrast to previous contentions. Our results underline the importance of a low-fat/high-carbohydrate diet in the management of obesity and the ensuing health problems.

Thiazolidinediones and blood lipids in type 2 diabetes.

We evaluated study population characteristics and treatment effects on blood lipids between studies in which either rosiglitazone (RSG) or pioglitazone (PIO) was investigated in patients with type 2 diabetes. We performed a summary analysis of all published double-blind, placebo-controlled studies with RSG (4 and 8 mg/d) and PIO (15, 30, and 45 mg/d). Data were analyzed by the random-effects model. Nineteen trials met our inclusion criteria, yielding 5304 patients, 3236 in studies with RSG and 2068 in studies with PIO. Subjects treated with PIO were more obese and showed more pronounced hyperglycemia and dyslipidemia (increased triglycerides and decreased HDL cholesterol) at baseline than did subjects treated with RSG. By weighted linear-regression analysis, studies with PIO showed greater beneficial effects on triglycerides, total cholesterol, and LDL cholesterol, after adjustment for the respective lipid levels at baseline. RSG 8 mg/d showed greater increases in total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol than did RSG 4 mg/d. PIO 30 mg/d showed greater reductions in triglycerides than did PIO 15 mg/d. Studies conducted with PIO showed more beneficial effects on blood lipids, but also different study population characteristics in comparison with studies conducted with RSG. Differences in both pharmacologic properties between agents and study population characteristics are likely to have influenced the results.

Lipid-related genes and myocardial infarction in 4685 cases and 3460 controls: discrepancies between genotype, blood lipid concentrations, and coronary disease risk.

BACKGROUND: Blood lipid concentrations are causally related to the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD). Various associations between CHD risk and genes that moderately affect plasma lipid levels have been described, but previous studies have typically involved too few 'cases' to assess these associations reliably. METHODS: The present study involves 4685 cases of myocardial infarction (MI) and 3460 unrelated controls without diagnosed cardiovascular disease. Six polymorphisms of four 'lipid-related' genes were genotyped. RESULTS: For the apolipoprotein E epsilon2/epsilon3/epsilon4 polymorphism, the average increase in the plasma ratio of apolipoprotein B to apolipoprotein A(1) (apoB/apoA(1) ratio) among controls was 0.082 (s.e. 0.007) per stepwise change from epsilon3/epsilon2 to epsilon3/epsilon3 to epsilon3/epsilon4 genotype (trend P < 0.0001). The case-control comparison yielded a risk ratio for MI of 1.16 (95% CI: 1.06, 1.27; P = 0.001) per stepwise change in these genotypes. But, this risk ratio was not as extreme as would have been expected from the corresponding differences in plasma apoB/apoA(1) ratio between genotypes. Hence, following adjustment for the measured level of the plasma apoB/apoA(1) ratio, the direction of the risk ratio per stepwise change reversed to 0.83 (95% CI: 0.74, 0.92; P < 0.001). Similarly, for the apolipoprotein B Asn4311Ser and Thr71Ile polymorphisms, genotypes associated with more adverse plasma apolipoprotein concentrations were associated with significantly lower risk of MI after adjustment for the apoB/apoA(1) ratio. The B2 allele of the cholesteryl ester transfer protein TaqIb polymorphism was associated with a significantly lower plasma apoB/apoA(1) ratio, but with no significant difference in the risk of MI. Finally, the lipoprotein lipase Asn291Ser and T4509C (PvuII) polymorphisms did not produce clear effects on either the plasma apoB/apoA(1) ratio or the risk of MI. CONCLUSIONS: It remains unresolved why some of these genetic factors that produce lifelong effects on plasma lipid concentrations have significantly less than the correspondingly expected effects on CHD rates in adult life.

Low-intensity physical activity benefits blood lipids and lipoproteins in older adults living at home.

OBJECTIVE: to examine the influence of low-intensity, habitual physical activity on blood lipids and lipoproteins and other cardiovascular risk factors in older adults living at home. DESIGN: cross-sectional observational study. PARTICIPANTS: a convenience sample of healthy, older adults (n = 155) who were mainly non-Hispanic, white (96.8%), female (65.2%) and on medications for cardiometabolic-related disorders (60.6%) and had an average age of 74.2 +/- 0.5 years. METHODS: we used a question from the Yale Physical Activity Survey to assess the typical number of hours per day spent in motion during the past month, collapsing responses into <5 and > or = 5 h/day. We determined blood lipids, lipoproteins and glucose with Kodak Ektachem serum oxidase assays or finger stick using the Cholestech LDX system enzymatic technique, and measured blood pressure by auscultation. Waist circumference was the indicator of abdominal fat distribution and body mass index the measure of overall adiposity. RESULTS: after adjusting for age, sex, adiposity, postprandial state, medication use and method of blood sampling, greater amounts of daily accumulated movement were associated with more favourable blood lipid-lipoprotein profiles. Subjects reporting > or = 5 h of daily movement had higher levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol [mean difference (95% confidence interval): 0.23 mmol/l (0.07, 0.39); P = 0.002] and a lower ratio of total to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol [average difference: -0.92 (-1.36, -0.48); P = 0.003]. They had lower levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol [mean difference: -0.39 mmol/l (-0.80, 0.03); P = 0.074)] and a lower ratio of triglyceride to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol [mean difference: -1.31 (-2.50, -0.12); P = 0.059]. Total cholesterol was similar in the two groups (P > 0.05). The mean blood glucose was 1.49 mmol/l lower (-2.67, -0.31) in the more active group (P = 0.02), independent of age, sex, adiposity, medication use and postprandial state. CONCLUSIONS: low-intensity, habitual physical activity is a sufficient stimulus to enhance blood lipids/lipoproteins and glucose in older adults, independent of abdominal and overall adiposity.

Influence of diet and prolonged fasting on blood lipids, ketone bodies, glucose and insulin in adult sheep.

In order to study changes in blood composition during feeding and prolonged fasting, six adult Suffolk ewes received three different diets during three periods of four weeks. Two intake levels (one and three times maintenance) and two roughage/concentrate ratios (100 and 14 p. 100 roughage) were compared according to a twofold latin square. Afterwards the animals were fasted for an 11-day period. The concentration of free fatty acids in the blood decreased when concentrate was added to the diet and when energy intake level, insufficient to meet maintenance requirements, was increased to just sufficient and then to excessive. Blood lipid and lipoprotein composition was not influenced by a change in diet. Supplying concentrate instead of roughage produced increases in the proportions of stearic acid in the triglycerides and free fatty acids and of linoleic acid in the phospholipids and cholesteryl esters and decreases in the proportions of oleic acid in the free fatty acids and of oleic and palmitic acids in the triglycerides and cholesteryl esters. When increasing intake level, the proportion of linoleic acid in the phospholipids and cholesteryl esters was further increased. Increased insulinemia was also observed with concentrate intake, particularly when the concentrate was fed ad libitum. Differences in blood composition resulting from the dietary treatments rapidly disappeared with fasting. After an initial decrease, blood ketone bodies increased and the beta-hydroxybutyrate/acetoacetate (BHB/AA) ratio decreased. Glycemia decreased initially and then stabilized; the concentration of free fatty acids increased from the first day onwards and the proportion of free fatty acids in total blood lipids also increased. An increased proportion of oleic acid in the free fatty acids and triglycerides was compensated for by a decrease of saturated acids. A decrease in the level of polyunsaturated fatty acids in the phospholipids and cholesteryl esters was balanced by increased levels of saturated and oleic acids. The high density lipoprotein/low density lipoprotein ratio (HDL/LDL) decreased and insulinemia showed a strong decrease during the first day. Blood composition seemed to stabilize after-5-6 days of fasting, except for the ketone bodies which increased again after 10 days of the fast and for glycemia which increased after 5-6 days of the fast. The influence of previous dietary treatment on changes in blood composition during fasting clearly depended on the body conformation of the animal. When animals showed similar body conformation, no differences in the blood changes were observed during fasting. But when lean and fat animals were compared, extensive differences were found in the blood composition after the food was removed.

[Effect of xuezhikang on blood lipids, serum oxidized low density lipoprotein, C-reactive protein and fibrinogen in patients with unstable angina pectoris].

OBJECTIVE: To study the lipid regulatory effect of Xuezhikang (XZK) and its effects on serum oxidized low density lipoprotein (OX-LDL), C-reactive protein (CRP) and fibrinogen (FIB) in patients with unstable angina pectoris (UAP). METHODS: UAP patients with hyperlipidemia were treated with XZK 0.6 g, orally taken, twice a day for 2 successive months followed by half dosage for 2 months. To UAP patients with normal blood lipids, Vit E was given orally for 4 months. Levels of blood lipids, OX-LDL, CRP, FIB at the time of entry, 1st and 2nd month of the therapeutic course were observed and end-point events in the two groups was compared. RESULTS: XZK can reduce the serum level of total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein after being administered for 1 month, and the effect further elevated after 2 months. Its effect in lowering triglycerides and increasing high density lipoprotein initiated after 2 months administration. Compared with effect of Vit E, XZK can significantly lower the serum OX-LDL, CRP and FIB after 2 months administration, and reduce the end-point events in 4 months. CONCLUSION: XZK has good regulatory effect on blood lipids, it also can inhibit the development of inflammation in coronary plaque, therefore, is beneficial to the prognosis of UAP patients.
