Importance of carbenicillin and gentamicin cross-resistant serotype 0:12 Pseudomonas aeruginosa in six Athens hospitals.

One hundred and six clinical isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, collected from various hospitals were typed with O-antisera and studied for their susceptibility to antibiotics and phages. Forty-four of 49 multiresistant isolates belonged to the O12 serogroup, a serogroup rarely found among strains of other resistance phenotypes. Eleven of the 45, O12 isolates were resistant to all phages, and 31 were sensitive only to phage 68. The latter pattern was encountered in nine of the 61 strains comprising the other O-serogroups.

Antimicrobial susceptibilities of Campylobacter jejuni isolates from hospitalized children in Athens, Greece, collected during 2004-2005.

A total of 170 Campylobacter jejuni strains isolated from the stool of children with clinical gastroenteritis, aged from 3 months to 14 years, were collected during a two-year period (2004-2005). From the 170 strains 30% were resistant to ciprofloxacin (MIC > or = 4 microg/ml), 55% to tetracycline (MIC > 8 microg/ml), 13% to clindamycin (MIC > or = 8 microg/ml), 4% to ampicillin (MIC > 16 microg/ml), 6% to erythromycin (MIC > or = 8 microg/ml), 4% to coamoxiclav (MIC > or = 16/8 microg/ml) and 0% to gentamicin. Compared to previous reports from Greece, the antimicrobial resistance rates to erythromycin, ampicillin and coamoxiclav remain low, while they are still high for tetracycline and ciprofloxacin. Considering similar reports from many other countries and the high incidence of Campylobacter gastroenteritis worldwide, the value of ciprofloxacin as a first choice drug in the empiric treatment of the infection is questionable.

Blood characteristics, tracheal volume and heart mass of burrowing owls (Athene cunicularia) and bobwhite (Colinus virginianus).

1. Measurements of certain hematological and morphological characteristics were made in burrowing owls and bobwhite in search of features that could be associated with the previously described ventilatory adaptations of the burrowing owl to hypoxia and hypercarbia. 2. Values for burrowing owls and bobwhite, respectively, were: P50 = 44.9, 46.0 torr; Hct = 36.6, 38.8 vol%, Hb = 12, 12.3 (g/100 ml); RBC = 2.72 X 10(6), 3.02 X 10(6); log P50/pH = -0.412, -0.485; delta log PCO2/delta pH = -1.39, -1.585. 3. The owls had greater heart weights and smaller tracheal volumes than the bobwhite or the predicted value. 4. No hematological characteristics of the burrowing bird distinguish it from the non-burrowing bird.

Maternity blues in Athens, Greece: a study during the first 3 days after delivery.

BACKGROUND: Although maternity blues have been studied in many countries worldwide the factors that influence the occurrence of this clinical entity are not well understood. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence, time course and symptomatology of maternity blues in a Greek urban environment as well as the relation of maternity blues with certain clinical and sociodemographic factors. METHOD: A study of a sample of 402 women that were recruited during the first day after delivery. Each woman completed the Kennerley's Blues Questionnaire on a daily basis for the first 3 days of puerpartum. Clinical and sociodemographic data were obtained through questionnaires and personal interview. RESULTS: 179 (44.5%) women experienced severe maternity blues during the first 3 days after delivery. Delivery by caesarian section (P=0.006), stressful events during pregnancy (P=0.02), depressive feelings the last month prior to delivery (P=0.002), anxiety on the day of delivery (P=0.001) and hypochondriasis (P=0.001) were the factors that were found to relate significantly to maternity blues. CONCLUSION: The women's emotional condition prior and after delivery, delivery via caesarotomy, as well as fears concerning somatic health had strong impact on the occurrence of maternity blues.
