Acitretin treatment of severe psoriasis.

Fourteen male patients suffering from severe psoriasis were treated with 30 to 50 mg/day acitretin during 12 weeks. At the end of the treatment, 6 patients were in remission and 7 showed a marked improvement of the disease. One patient did not show any change. Acitretin monotherapy in acrodermatitis continua Hallopeau.

In a patient affected with acrodermatitis continua Hallopeau, acitretin (Ro 10-1670) monotherapy resulted in a complete clearance of pustulation at a dosage of 45 mg per day. At this dosage the leukotriene B4-induced intraepidermal accumulation of polymorphonuclear leukocytes was markedly inhibited.

[Anodontia and hidrotic ectodermal dysplasia, hyporeactive to heat. Effect of acitretin].

We observed an adult female patient presenting an autosomal recessive ectodermal dysplasia difficult to classify among the various reported forms of this disease. She had the major signs of the hidrotic type of the disease (palmo-plantar hyperkeratosis, nail and hair dystrophies, and typical sweat glands) and anodontia as reported in the hypohidrotic form of the syndrome. We evaluated the function of the sweat glands and found them hyporeactive to a heat stimulus. Most of the epithelial alterations have improved under therapy by acitretin.

Acitretin and etretinate. How and when they should be used.

Nearly two decades after the advent of synthetic retinoids for the treatment of many severe and incapacitating dermatologic conditions, the usefulness of these drugs is not universally accepted. The safety profile is well established. Other than teratogenicity, which can be avoided if the recommended precautions for use are followed, serious or unexpected adverse reactions rarely occur. This article concisely addresses some questions about etretinate and acitretin therapy that are most pertinent for the dermatologist.

[Cowden disease: treatment with acitretine].

INTRODUCTION: Cowden's disease is a rare hereditary skin disease which is important to recognize due to the risk of cancer. CASE REPORT: A 40-year-old man was hospitalized for psoriasis. He presented florid papillomatous lesions involving the lip and the buccal cavity, a thyroid adenoma and polyposis of the gut. The diagnosis of Cowden's disease was retained. Treatment with acitretin, 0.75 mg/kg/d was initiated for the psoriatic lesions. Hypertrophic lesions of the lip and mouth regressed during treatment but reappeared when the drug dose was tapered of then withdrawn. The course of the polyposis was not verified. DISCUSSION: This case demonstrates the frequency of digestive tract involvement in Cowden's disease and the favorable, though transient, effect of oral retinoids on mucosal lesions in Cowden's disease.
