[The big vipers of Africa of the genus Bitis Gray, 1842 and their venom. Zoological, biochemical and clinical data].

After the suggestion of the genus Bitis Gray, 1842 snakes, we studied in details three species, among the largest and most widespread ones: Bitis arietans, Bitis gabonica and Bitis nasicornis. The main morphological characteristics and some of the zoological data presented may be very useful, as well as the clinical signs, for physicians to identify, the snake that bits a patient. Thus, an adapted treatment can be undertaken. The biochemical composition of the venoms and their experimental toxicity are also presented for a better understanding of the clinical symptoms.

ORCA: the versatile CPR.

The introduction of computer-based patient records (CPRs) that fully replace paper records proves especially difficult in specialized care, despite the potential advantages of CPRs for patient care and research. Improved data legibility, availability, sharing of records, and decision support may directly benefit patient care. Barriers to the introduction of CPR applications at institutions may be caused by lack of infrastructure, or by financial or organizational issues. To have clinicians interactively enter data at the point of care is still a big challenge. This paper presents an overview of ORCA (Open Record of CAre): a generic CPR, designed for integration with existing systems, presentation of multi-media patient data, and the collection of structured data, directly by clinicians. ORCA can easily be tailored to the needs of a variety of medical specialists without the need for changes to its data model, functionality, or interface. The paper describes the essence of the architecture of ORCA and the user benefits with emphasis on the support of structured data entry.

Heterogeneity of big-big hPRL in hyperprolactinemia.

Sera from a patient with macroprolactinoma (case 1) and from a hyperprolactinemic woman with regular menstruation (case 2) were analyzed for prolactin activity by gel filtration using Sephadex G-100, Sephadex G-200 and TSK G3000SW columns. The chromatographic profile by Sephadex G-100 showed that the percentage of immunoreactive big-big hPRL was 10.7% in case 1 and 64.1% in case 2. On Sephadex G-200 and TSK G3000SW columns, the molecular weight of big-big hPRL was estimated to be more than 500,000 daltons (big-big1 hPRL) in case 1 and approximately 250,000-300,000 daltons (big-big2 hPRL) in case 2. Big-big1 hPRL in case 1 was converted to big and little hPRLs when the serum was treated with 2-mercaptoethanol (2-ME), but part of the big-big2 hPRL in case 2 was converted to a larger molecule. Radioactive big-big hPRL generated by mixing labeled hPRL with the serum from case 1 was eluted with the void volume on Sephadex G-100 column and was not converted to the other molecular forms after 2-ME treatment. There were two radioactive big-big hPRL on TSK G3000SW column and these estimated molecular weights were more than 300,000 daltons. The data demonstrated the existence of at least two forms of big-big hPRL in the serum and indicated that radioactive big-big hPRL may be different from these hPRLs in the serum.

A preliminary look at source-receptor relationships in the Texas-Mexico border area.

Several factors have recently caused visibility impairment at Big Bend National Park, TX, to be of interest. Analyses of historical data collected there have shown that visibility is poorer and fine particle concentrations are higher at Big Bend than at other monitored Class I areas in the western United States. In addition, air masses frequently arrive there after crossing Mexico, where emissions are not well known. During September and October 1996, a field study was undertaken to begin examining the aerosol, visibility, and meteorology on both sides of the border. Results indicate that, during the study, the largest fractions of fine mass and light extinction at Big Bend were due to sulfates and the trace elements most closely associated with sulfate particles were Na and Se. Based on back trajectory modeling and the spatial, temporal, and inter-species relationships in the fine particle concentrations measured during the study, sulfates arrived at the park from both Mexico and the United States. Se was higher in Texas than in Northern Mexico, while V, Pb, Zn, Ni, and Mn were on average much higher in Mexico.

Ensembling local learners through multimodal perturbation.

Ensemble learning algorithms train multiple component learners and then combine their predictions. In order to generate a strong ensemble, the component learners should be with high accuracy as well as high diversity. A popularly used scheme in generating accurate but diverse component learners is to perturb the training data with resampling methods, such as the bootstrap sampling used in bagging. However, such a scheme is not very effective on local learners such as nearest-neighbor classifiers because a slight change in training data can hardly result in local learners with big differences. In this paper, a new ensemble algorithm named Filtered Attribute Subspace based Bagging with Injected Randomness (FASBIR) is proposed for building ensembles of local learners, which utilizes multimodal perturbation to help generate accurate but diverse component learners. In detail, FASBIR employs the perturbation on the training data with bootstrap sampling, the perturbation on the input attributes with attribute filtering and attribute subspace selection, and the perturbation on the learning parameters with randomly configured distance metrics. A large empirical study shows that FASBIR is effective in building ensembles of nearest-neighbor classifiers, whose performance is better than that of many other ensemble algorithms.

Testing geographical pathways of speciation in a recent island radiation.

Determining the mode, or geographical context, of speciation is a critical first step to understanding the evolutionary mechanisms that cause new species to arise. In this study, we estimated phylogenetic relationships in the cerasina species group of the Hawaiian cricket genus Laupala (Orthoptera: Gryllidae) to test competing phylogeographical hypotheses and thus infer the mode of speciation. A previous phylogenetic result based on nuclear sequence data suggested that populations of L. cerasina on the Big Island of Hawaii are the result of two independent colonizations from Maui, implying parallel speciation and convergent song evolution, and contradicting systematic hypotheses based on behavioural and morphological data. We used amplified fragment length polymorphisms to investigate further the relationships among species and populations in the cerasina species group. Results of these analyses provide a robust estimate of phylogenetic relationships and support the phylogeographical history indicated by behavioural and morphological data.

Distinct pulsatile prolactin secretory patterns during the estrous cycle: possible encoding for diverse physiological responses.

PRL levels during the estrous cycle have been reported to be low, with the notable exception of the afternoon proestrous surge. The present study was designed to evaluate the pulsatile pattern of PRL secretion during the low secretory phases of the cycle. Animals were bled at 3-min intervals for 150 min during proestrus morning (AM), estrus AM and evening (PM), metestrus AM, and diestrus AM and PM. Using the algorithm Detect, pulse frequency, duration, interval, peak and trough values, area under the pulses, and mean PRL levels were calculated. PRL secretion was pulsatile during all stages of the estrous cycle, although the pattern varied considerably among the different cycle stages. Pulse frequency was highest during estrus and lowest during diestrus. All quantitative pulse parameters (peak, trough, amplitude, and area under pulse) were also higher during estrus and lowest in diestrus. Analysis of area under the pulse using frequency distribution indicated that at least two subpopulations of pulses, i.e. small mass and large mass pulses, were observed in certain stages of the cycle. Small mass pulses were present at all stages of the cycle; while their frequency remained unchanged, changes in other parameters were observed at different stages which did not always correlate with changes in mean PRL levels. Big mass pulses, on the other hand, presented a clear change in pulse frequency with values rising progressively from diestrus PM through proestrus to peak at estrus. Between estrus PM and metestrus AM these big mass PRL pulses essentially disappeared. In contrast to the marked changes in frequency, big mass PRL pulses were remarkably homogeneous in other quantitative characteristics. The results indicate that distinct changes in PRL pulsatility patterns occur during the estrous cycle; these changes are related to both the pattern and the quality of PRL pulses. Based on the observations of a companion study (28) and other data, we suggest that the genesis of the big mass and small mass PRL pulses involves dopaminergic and nondopaminergic mechanisms, respectively. The timing and selectivity of the changes in PRL pulsatile patterns suggest that those patterns may encode different signals for expression of the diverse actions of PRL on reproductive tissues.

[Materials for the substantiation of the biological MAC of benzene].

Relatively great amount of benzene-originated phenol, the presence of a definite relationship between phenol amount in the urine and benzene content in the air indicate that it is reasonable to use a phenol sample as an exposure test. To determine the intensity of benzene exposure, data on phenol content in the urine of people working at some big-tonnage enterprises has been analyzed. On the basis of the national and foreign literature data on the correlation between the phenol urine concentration and the level of benzene exposure a regression equation was deduced, which has made it possible to calculate phenol content in the urine on the level of average working day benzene concentration adopted in the USSR. This value equals 15 mg/l, which was proposed as a biological benzene MAC.

[Disorders of hormone metabolism in chronic uremia].

Uremia is accompanied by a variety of "true" and "laboratory" endocrine disorders, due in part to impaired degradation of hormones because of failing kidney function and in part to the interference of the uremic environment with extrarenal degradation or synthesis and secretion of certain hormones. "True" endocrine disorders, like hyperparathyroidism or hypogonadism, that are associated with renal insufficiency are in contrast with "laboratory" endocrine disorders in uremia, where pathological serum hormone levels lack clearcut clinical evidence for dysfunction of the respective endocrine organ (e.g. thyroid gland). This lack of a direct cause and effect relationship in uremia may be due to the fact that immunoassayable hormone levels may include cross reacting components without biological activity in uremia and to the fact that the uremic environment may alter hormonal effects on target organs. This review tries to give a survey of the big amount of available clinical and laboratory data for uremia induced changes in the following hormones: growth hormone and somatomedins, prolactin, cortisol and adrenocorticotrope hormone, the gonadal and thyroid function as well as parathyroid hormone action. The knowledge of these uremia-induced changes should facilitate the clinician the diagnosis of an additional primary endocrine ailment in a uremic patient and should, on the other hand, spare these patients unnecessary treatment for a suspected endocrine disorder.

Cardiovascular effects of centrally applied endothelin-1 1-31 and its relationship to endothelin-1 1-21 in rats.

Endothelin-1(1-31) (ET-1(1-31)) is a novel member of the endothelin family, which comprises 31 amino acids and derived from the selective hydrolysis of big ET-1 by chymase. Although ET-1(1-31) has been reported to be involved in biological effects via direct or indirect (converting to ET-1(1-21)) mechanisms, the cardiovascular effects of central ET-1(1-31) are not fully identified. The present study was designed to comparatively investigate the cardiovascular effects of intracerebroventricular (icv) application of ET-1(1-31) or ET-1(1-21) in anesthetized rats. Injection (icv) of ET-1(1-31) (500 pmol) produced a biphasic blood pressure response: an initial increase (from 118+/-8 to 138+/-14 mmHg, P<0.05) followed by a sustained decrease in BP (from 118+/-8 to 58+/-9 mmHg, P<0.05), which was very similar to BP response to icv injection of big ET-1 (500 pmol) or ET-1(1-21) (25 pmol)(.) The cardiovascular effects of icv injection of ET-1(1-31) or ET-1(1-21) were completely antagonized by ET(A) receptor antagonist BQ123 but not ET(B) receptor antagonist BQ788. Furthermore, pretreatment with ET converting enzyme inhibitor phosphoramidon (10 nmol) abolished the cardiovascular effects evoked by icv injection of ET-1(1-31) or big ET-1. In conclusion, the current data showed that central ET-1(1-31) produced the similar cardiovascular effects as those of central ET-1(1-21), and suggesting that the central cardiovascular effects of ET-1(1-31) resulted from it converting to ET-1(1-21) and then activating ET(A) receptors.

Endopeptidase 24.11 inhibition does not modify uterotonic effects of endothelins in rat uterus.

We investigated effects of the endopeptidase 24.11 inhibitor, SCH 39370, on uterotonic effects of endothelins (ETs) and sarafotoxin S6b. Responses of uteri from non-pregnant rats were inhibited by the ETA receptor antagonist, BQ123 (1 microM) but not the ETB receptor antagonist, BQ 788 (1 microM). ET-1, sarafotoxin S6b and ET-2 were more potent than ET-3 in tissues from non-pregnant and pregnant rats. SCH 39370 (10 microM) did not affect uterotonic responses to these peptides in either group, but inhibited those of big ET-1 in non-pregnant rat tissues, indicating inhibition of conversion of big ET-1 to ET-1. These data indicate that endopeptidase 24.11 does not inactivate the endothelin peptides in the rat uterus.

New microwave background constraints on the cosmic matter budget: trouble for nucleosynthesis?

We compute the joint constraints on ten cosmological parameters from the latest cosmic microwave background measurements. The lack of a significant second acoustic peak in the new BOOMERANG and MAXIMA data favors models with more baryons than big bang nucleosynthesis predicts, almost independently of what prior information is included. The simplest flat inflation models with purely scalar scale-invariant fluctuations prefer a baryon density 0. 022<h(2)Omega(b)<0.040 and a total nonbaryonic ( hot+cold) dark matter density 0.14<h(2)Omega(dm)<0.32 at 95% confidence and allow reionization no earlier than z approximately 30.

The effectiveness of different treatment options for non-islet cell tumour hypoglycaemia.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the outcome of different treatment options used in several cases of non-islet cell tumour hypoglycaemia (NICTH). PATIENTS: Eight cases of NICTH were referred for diagnosis and monitoring following either surgical or medical treatment. METHODS: Serum samples collected throughout the time-course of each case were analysed for glucose, insulin, C-peptide, IGF-I, total IGF-II, total IGF-II to IGF-I ratio and, in most of the cases, big IGF-II. RESULTS: Surgical excision was successful in the relief of symptoms and normalization of the biochemical parameters. Therapeutic treatment with glucocorticoids confirmed previous studies showing the suppressive effect on tumour (big) IGF-II production. The present data show that the effect was dose-dependent and reversible if doses were below a critical level. CONCLUSIONS: Within the limits of the cases studied, and the time-scales involved, moderate- to high-dose glucocorticoid therapy had immediate beneficial influence on symptomatic hypoglycaemia and, if tolerated in the long term, was effective in correcting the underlying biochemical dysfunction, unlike other therapeutic regimens. This effectiveness was only achieved when the dose exceeded a threshold level specific to the patient. In addition, reduction of the dose or withdrawal of the drug caused a return of the abnormal biochemical profile. Surgical removal of the malignancy, where this was an option, was successful within the periods studied.

Toxocara seroprevalence in children from a subtropical city in Argentina.

Most studies from Argentina have focused on toxocariasis as an environmental problem of big cities, and there are no available data about children infection from small or middle-sized cities. In order to assess the prevalence of anti-Toxocara antibodies in infantile population, 206 children from Resistencia, of both sexes, aged 1-14 years old were studied by Elisa testing with E/S T. canis L2 antigens. Hematological parameters and immunoglobulin levels were determined; five days' stool samples were studied and epidemiological data were obtained by means of a questionnaire to parents. Results showed that 73% of the children had one or more dogs living at home, 57% reported geophagia and 37.9% were positive for Toxocara serology, but there was no significant difference in prevalence neither for boys and girls, nor concerning age. An increased risk of infection was observed in age groups 5-6 and 7-8 for boys, and in age groups 3-4 and 5-6 for girls.

Conservation of wild animals by assisted reproduction and molecular marker technology.

Wild animals are an integral component of the ecosystem. Their decimation due to abrupt natural calamities or due to gradual human intervention would be disastrous to the ecosystem and would alter the balance in nature between various biotic components. Such an imbalance could have an adverse effect on the ecosystem. Therefore, there is an urgent need to put an end to the ever increasing list of endangered species by undertaking both in situ and ex situ conservation using tools of modern biology, to ascertain the degree of genetic variation and reproductive competence in these animals. This review highlights the development and use of molecular markers such as microsatellites, minisatellites, mitochondrial control region, cytochrome b and MHC loci to assess the genetic variation in various Indian wild animals such as the lion, tiger, leopard and deer. The review also presents data on the semen profile of the big cats of India. Reproductive technologies such as cryopreservation of semen and artificial insemination in big cats are also highlighted.

[The use of iridoscopy in prophylactic examinations].

To study the method of iridodiagnosis, clinical and iridoscopic examinations were conducted in 1104 patients and healthy persons, of them 516 men and 588 women, aged from 18 to 65 years. The contingent of the subjects represented 6 groups of patients with the most frequently observed pathology and a control group. The results obtained allow to consider that iridoscopy is indeed a sufficiently informative method for diagnostics of organ pathology without differentiation, in most of cases, between nosologic units, and achieves the highest effect in combination with detailed collected complaints and the anamnesis. The method can be used in prophylactic examinations of big contingents. The attempt to formalize iridoscopic data has shown that it is possible, in principle, to draw up a diagnostic algorithm, to describe it in one of programming languages and to work out an iridodiagnostic complex.
