[Study of the characteristics of transcortin and the progesterone binding protein of the plasma of pregnant guinea pig].

Experiments were conducted with the plasma of pregnant guinea pigs; it was shown that the corticosteroid-binding protein (CBP) of the plasma in a pregnant guinea pig (in difference from the CBP of other species) bound cortisol only, and not progesterone. Progesterone-binding protein (PBP) of these animals bound progesterone, but not glucocorticoids and their metabolites. The binding capacity of CBP proved to be several hundred microgram per cent of cortizol and of PBP--about 100 microgram per cent of progesterone. The association constant of the CBP with cortisol constituted 10(6) M-1, and of the PBP-10(-8) M-1. These proteins are also analysed according to a number of other parameters.

[Hypocortisolemia with neither signs nor symptoms of cortisol deficiency: research on transcortin characteristics].

Low plasma levels of cortisol, as a result of primary or secondary adrenal hypofunction, is usually associated to findings of hypocortisolism. Low plasma cortisol levels without clinical manifestations have been observed in patients in which cortisol binding capacity (CBG) is altered. In this paper we report a clinically normal patient, with very low plasma cortisol levels. We investigated a possible CBG defect or the presence of a CBG binding substance as an explanation of the clinical findings. We found a normal CBG and no competing substance. Therefore, the presence of low cortisol levels suggests the presence in this patient of a receptor with increased sensitivity to cortisol, or another molecule that can be recognized as glucocorticoid by the cortisol receptor.

[Diagnostic informative value of the method of competitive transcortin binding for determining corticosteroid levels in hypercorticism].

The level of nonmetabolized forms of the corticosteroids hydrocortisone and corticosterone in the blood and urine were determined in 3 groups of patients: with the Icenko-Cushing disease and syndrome and neuroendocrine form of the hypothalamic syndrome. The determination of the level of these hormones, a study of their circadian rhythm by the method of concurrent protein binding have shown that these indices are rather informative and can be recommended as diagnostic and differential criteria for the evaluation of the hypothalamo-hypophyseal-adrenal system.
