Further isolation of murine herpesviruses from small mammals in southwestern Slovakia.

A total of 69 small mammals of 6 species were collected in localities Marcelová and Kopác (southwestern Slovakia) and investigated. Two strains of murine herpesvirus (MHV) have been isolated and reisolated from Apodemus flavicollis. Both virus strains killed suckling mice after i.c. and i.p. inoculation. Adult mice were killed 4-7 days after i.c. inoculation. Cross antigenic reactions among 14C aminoacid hydrolysate labelled MHV-72 infected Vero cells and mouse immune sera against the two new isolates and rabbit immune sera raised against purified MHV strains No. 72 and No. 76 were done. Profiles of immunoprecipitated proteins are almost identical. All used immune sera crossreacted with major proteins of MHV-72 strain. We conclude that the two virus isolates from Apodemus flavicollis are new strains of MHV.

[SIDS--a retrospective study in Slovakia].

This is an analysis of 102 cases of SIDS from retrospective studies in the Zilina and Senica districts. The incidence of SIDS in the Zilina district was 2.04/1000 (period 1969-1978) and 1.04/1000 (period 1980-1984). The incidence of SIDS in the Senica district was 0.82/1000 (period 1979-1990). According to preliminary results of the epidemiological study of SIDS in Slovakia (1991) the incidence is only 0.89/1000 which amounts, however, to 23.1% of the post-neonatal mortality. In the investigation nine indicators were evaluated: age at the time of death, morbidity before death, place of death, education of mother, position of infant at time of death, birth weight succession of child in family. The assembled results were compared with data in the literature. Because of similar results it is assumed that the following risk factors participate in the incidence of SIDS: age (2-4 months), time between midnight and 6 a.m., low socio-economic status of family, lower education of mother, incidence of SIDS in the family, short interval between childbirths, prone position during sleep, succession of child in family (third or subsequent), effect of smoking. The investigation did not confirm as risk factors a lower birth weight and inadequate postnatal adaptation. In the conclusions some possible ways of prevention are outlined.

The role of the registry in the study of relation between cancer and environment experiences from Slovakia.

Highly complete and detailed data on cancer incidence collected in National Cancer Registry of Slovakia in the years 1968-1988 contributed largely to the study of the relations between cancer occurrence and environment. The study of temporal trends of age-adjusted rates revealed the rapid increase of overall cancer incidence and mortality rates in males influenced mainly by extreme increase and high proportion of lung cancer. The lower but increasing overall incidence rates in females could be related to the increase in breast, other skin and genital organs cancers, while the stabilized mortality trends were caused by improving prognosis of these major cancers in females. The possible role of environmental factors in adults could be stressed also by the temporal trends of childhood malignancies which remained fairly stable during the same period. The role of environmental factors in cancer etiology is further documented with the dramatically increasing incidence of malignant skin melanoma caused probably by the overexposition to the sunlight and with prevailing incidence of the majority of cancer sites in urban areas. Finally, the significantly increased incidence rates of other skin cancers are shown in two districts and in both sexes in relation to the environment, highly polluted with arsenic.

Nucleotide sequence of the protein E gene of the tick-borne encephalitis virus strain 595 isolated in Slovakia.

Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus, strain 595 was isolated from Ixodes ricinus ticks in southern Slovakia. A part of the protein E gene was sequenced and compared with the prototype strain Neudorfl. Seventeen silent mutations and two amino acid changes (Ile-->Val, residue 167; Asn-->Thr, residue 366) were found. The nucleotide homology in the sequenced part of protein E gene of the strain 595 and the prototype strain Neudorfl is 98.6%. These findings indicate that the strain 595 is closely related to the strain Neudorfl.

[The effectiveness of iodine prophylaxis of endemic goiter in Slovakia from the viewpoint of physical and ultrasonographic examinations of the thyroid gland].

Being aimed at the effectivity of iodine prophylaxis of endemic goitre the authors examined 2946 children and adolescents at the age of 6-18 years during the period from 1989 to 1995 in 6 regions of Slovakia. The thyroid glands were examined physically and ultrasonographically. The authors have found out that the occurrence rate of diffuse goitre is acceptable and it is not meeting the criteria of endemic goitre. No case of nodular goitre was revealed. Similarly to the relative frequency of diffuse goitre, neither the ultrasonographically measured volumes of thyroid glands differed among various areas. They are comparable with the volumes detected in countries with a sufficient iodine supply. The use of criteria for iodine deficiency evaluation recommended by WHO (goitre occurrence, thyroid gland volume, ioduria) leads the authors to consider the current prophylaxis of endemic goitre as being effective and successful. (Tab. 5, Ref. 20.).

[Contamination in areas of Slovakia with strains of Coxiella burnetii imported from abroad].

Following the upsurge of Q fever epidemic in the village Jedl'ové Kostol'any, Nitra district, Slovakia, in April 1993, the possibility of the penetration of coxiellae into free nature was investigated for the next two years. Micromammals and their ectoparasites, primarily ticks, were employed as indicators of the presence of the infection in nature. The infestation of mammals and their ectoparasites was followed in J. Kostol'any on the farm where the goats were housed as well as in its close proximity. The infestation of ticks with coxiellae was further followed in four localities of the Rimavská Sobota district, where the goats after the eradication of Q fever outbreak in J. Kostol'any were transferred for breeding. The presence of coxiellae was not proved in these investigated localities. It is suggested that the pathogenicity of imported C. burnetii strains through Bulgarian goats was decreased under local environmental conditions including the ability to circulate freely in nature or these strains found inconvenient conditions for maintaining their viability.

Genetic studies in Medzev, an isolate in south-eastern Slovakia. 1. History, demography, marriage patterns.

In Medzev, a village located in South-Eastern Slovakia, the secular variation of two indices of genetic isolation has been studied. It could be seen that this village was highly isolated till the beginning of the 20th century. Both indices show a tendency to increase in the first five decades of this century. For the entire period from 1766-1950 the coefficient of inbreeding estimated by the method of isonymy was found to be F = 0.0074 with different ratios of random (Fr) and non-random (Fn) components in particular periods. The coefficient of inbreeding estimated from the ecclesiastical dispensations for marriages comes to F = 0.0019. The genetic significance of the changes in the population structure of this village will be analyzed in further studies.

[Isolation and identification of Lyssavirus strains from an area of Slovakia where oral antirabies vaccine was administered].

The study was aimed at isolation and subsequent identification of strains of rabies virus by means of monoclonal antibodies from foxes killed in the vaccination zone within the complex preliminary monitoring of oral antirabies vaccination. The results obtained indicate that the vaccines for oral antirabies vaccination used in Slovakia did not contain any vaccination strain pathogenic to the extremely sensitive target species-the fox (Vulpes vulpes).

[Preliminary identification of Borrelia burgdorferi isolated from Ixodes ricinus ticks in eastern Slovakia].

The first finding of spirochetes Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato in eastern Slovakia pertains to ticks Ixodes ricinus collected in the Kosice park forest in September 1995. The authors tested 7 strains using immunoblotting with 4 monoclonal antibodies (Mab): H9724--specific to the genus Borrelia, identifying 41 kDa flagellar protein, H5332--specific to OspA protein of B. burgdorferi, J 8.3 and I 17.3 specific to OspA and OspB proteins of B. afzelii. All the strains belong to the genus Borrelia (reacted with Mab H9724), 6 of 7 strains designated Ir103, Ir105, Ir107, Ir108, Ir112 and Ir113 were identified as B. burgdorferi sensu lato (reacted with Mab H5332). None of the strains reacted with Mab specific for B. afzelii.

Mapping in epidemiological studies and control of cancer: experiences from Slovakia.

This article reviews our experience with the use of the cancer atlas of Slovakia, published in 1989 which presented simultaneously the cancer incidence and mortality rates derived from national population-based cancer registries. Contrary to all expectations, the role of the environmental pollution was confirmed only for nonmelanoma skin cancer and arsenic exposure. Valuable information was obtained also for the study of dynamics of cancer distribution, which revealed a shift in the incidence of stomach cancer to the east and its replacement with colorectal cancer in the western part of the country. Of enormous importance for the comprehensive cancer care and control is the knowledge of incidence and mortality rates at the level of individual districts.

Genetic studies in a North-Slovakia isolate: Chmelnica. 3. Dermatoglyphic traits.

Dermatoglyphic traits in an endogamous community of the village Chmelnica (North-Eastern part of Slovakia) are reported and their frequency is compared with an average Slovak population. The results of this study demonstrate the regional variability and the particular dermatoglyphic specificity of the investigated population. The most conspicuous are the increased intergender differences in the course of the main lines on the palms, their consequently higher quantitative expression by indices, and the higher quantitative values of total line numbers on fingers that was observed for females of our sample.

An explosive outbreak of Q-fever in Jedl'ové Kostol'any, Slovakia.

An explosive epidemic of Q-fever that occurred at Jedl'ové Kostol'any (Nitra District) in April 1993, had an unusual mode of transmission, unprecedented in Slovakia. The submitted case-reports can be very instructive for both health workers and the lay public. The bulk of infection was spread in the local pub through contaminated garments of animal attendants assisting abortions and births of goats in a large capacity breeding centre of Gemersan Co. By their repeated visits to the local pub the infection most probably spread to other guests by aerosol. A total of 113 persons (103 males, 10 females) contracted Q-fever. Out of them 95 were infected by contact with the goat attendants (84%), and 18 were occupational diseases after direct contact with the infected goats. The human epidemic of Q-fever facilitated to trace an ongoing epizootic of coxiellosis in the herd of goats of Gemersan breed. In order to stop further spread of infection among humans and to contain the outbreak of coxiellosis among animals extensive epidemic and epizootic measures were taken.

Strain variability of plum pox virus isolates from western Slovakia.

Leaf tissues of stone fruit trees (plum, apricot, peach and myrobalan) carrying symptoms of plum pox virus (PPV) infection and of peach GF 305 seedlings and Nicotiana benthamiana infected experimentally with PPV were assayed for PPV by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The expected 243 bp PCR products were subjected to restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis with restriction endonucleases AluI and RsaI. All of the PCR products contained the AluI site. The RsaI restriction profiles of the PCR products demonstrated the prevalence of PPV-M subgroup in the tested samples from western Slovakia.

Quarantine strawberry vein banding virus firstly detected in Slovakia and Serbia.

Strawberry vein banding virus (SVBV) was detected by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and dot-blot hybridisation in samples of cultivated strawberry plants originating from central Slovakia and in samples of wild strawberry plants from south-eastern Serbia in Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (FRY). This is the first finding of SVBV in these countries as well as of SVBV in wild strawberry plants in Europe.

Elisa comparison of three whole-cell antigens of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato in serological study of dogs from area of Kosice, eastern Slovakia.

Three antigens of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (B. burgdorferi sensu stricto--Slovak strain Ir 105, B. garini - Slovak strain K 24 and B. burgdorferi sensu stricto--American strain B 31) were compared by ELISA on a group of dogs from urban agglomeration of Kosice, eastern Slovakia. Of 256 serum samples from dogs examined for the presence of anti-Borrelia IgG antibodies, 128 (50%) were positive with Ir 105 antigen, 107 (41.7%) with K 24 and 74 (28.9%) with B 31. The seroprevalence between strains B 31 and K 24 and B 31 and Ir 105 differed statistically significantly (test chi2, p < 0.05), however, the difference between strains K 24 and Ir 105 was insignificant. A significantly higher seroprevalence of all the strains examined was detected in hunting dogs (test chi2, p < 0.05) when compared with service and pet dogs. The seroprevalence correlated with the frequency of outing the dogs in woody areas with the occurrence of borreliae in ticks (R = 0.5 or 0.7) as well as with the frequency of finding engorged ticks (R = 0.5). An epizootiological anamnesis showed a fair specificity in all the strains examined. The Slovak strains showed the higher consistency of positive and negative findings (70%) but statistically lower specificity than the American strain.

[Preparation for heart transplantation in Slovakia 1994-1997].

The authors present the process of introduction heart transplant programme in the years 1994-1997 in Slovakia. A short historical review about heart transplantation is given in the article. Fundamental requirements for heart transplantation realization, activities of Working group "Heart transplantation", methods of follow-up of patients after heart transplantation and selection of candidates for transplantation, are discussed. The authors also deal with surgical and anaesthesiological prerequisites for this programme realization. In conclusion they claim that the requirements for regular programme of heart transplantation are accomplished. (Tab. 2, Fig. 3, Ref. 21.)

Parity and cancer risk in Slovakia.

Mortality data from women aged 45-74 who died between 1968 and 1977 in Slovakia, Czechoslovakia, were used to examine the effect of parity (number of live-born children) on risk of dying from each of 20 common cancers. After controlling for the effects of age and year of death, the effect of parity on risk was statistically significant at the p less than 0.001 level, for cancers of the stomach, liver, gall-bladder, breast, cervix, and ovary; and at the p less than 0.01 level for uterine corpus and brain. No effect of parity was seen for cancer of the colon or rectum. Among parous women the trend relating risk to level of parity was significant at the p less than 0.001 level for cancers of the breast, uterine corpus, ovary and brain; and at the p less than 0.01 level for stomach cancer. The findings relating parity to cancers of the breast and reproductive organs are consistent with previous reports. The associations of parity with cancers of the digestive tract deserve further study.

Some new aspects of CJD epidemiology in Slovakia.

Descriptive epidemiological and genealogical data obtained by prospective and retrospective studies on CJD in Slovakia and in patients emigrating from CJD clusters were analysed. Observations contradictory to an exclusively genetic etiology of temporo-spatial accumulation of CJD are presented. Data indicating a genetically increased susceptibility to the disease and its coincidence with environmental risk in clustering patients are discussed.
