The authors first applied a complex of modern noninvasive methods of studying cerebral vascular pathologies, both direct (phonoangiography, echopulso- or echosphygmography, bidimensional scanning) and indirect (telethermography, ultrasound flowmetry, photoplethysmography and ophthalmodynamometry, inhalation radiocirculography) in examining patients with various stages of atherosclerotic carotid impairment and various forms of cerebral vascular pathology (ischemic stroke, transient disorders of the cerebral circulation, initial manifestations of cerebral circulation deficiency) verified by cerebral angiography, surgery or necropsy findings. High informative value of the above methods used combined in cases of circulatory pathology in the carotid bed was shown and the differential evaluation of the importance of every individual method in concrete types of cerebrovascular pathology was carried out. The use of ultrasound and thermovisual methods is considered to be most promising in the diagnosis of vascular cerebral impairments.

For parallel detection of mycobacteria by the radiometric method using a Bactec 460 TB apparatus and by the standard cultivation method 5383 specimens of pathological material from patients of in-patient TB departments (90%) and other health facilities (10%) were examined. 492 samples were positive. By the radiometric method alone 114 samples were positive and by cultivation only 15 samples. The mean period of detection was 12.9 days for the Bactec method, for the cultivation method 32.4 days. For the Bactec system 0.4 ml inoculum was used and one cultivation vessel, for the cultivation 0.4-0.6 ml inoculum and two egg media per sample. Of 15 samples positive on cultivation only, rarely colonies were obtained after 6-9 weeks' incubation.
At the Burdenko Institute for Neurosurgery in Moscow, the following methods are used for the demarkation of cerebral gliomas: Beta-radiometry, rheometry = measurement of th electrical resistance of the cerebral tissue, staining of the tumour prior to the surgical intervention by means of a Serbinenko catheter, puncture biopsy as well as thermometry. The most frequently used techniques are beta-radiometry and rheometry. The methods are simple in application and the results are reliable. The accuracy of the localisation of a cerebral glioma by means of beta-radiometry is 98 per cent. For the impedance measurement a frequency of 1000 Hz is used. Liquids show the lowest and fibrous meningiomas the highest electrical resistance values. On an average the resistance of cerebral tumours is half as high as that of the average normal brain tissue. In almost all operations one tries to obtain an information about the extent and position of the glioma by means of brain puncture. A special needle probe has been designed to obtain tissue pieces for histological examinations. Experience has also been gained with ultrasonic probing and with temperature measurements of tumour and brain tissue. the interior of the tumours shows a 0.5 to 3 degrees C higher temperature.
A technique was developed to compute the radiance of the scene viewed by the optical receiver of the Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter. The technique used the detection threshold and the false detection rate of the receiver to provide a passive radiometry measurement of Mars at the 1064 nm wavelength over a 2 nm bandwidth and subkilometer spatial resolution in addition to the altimetry and active radiometry measurements. The passive radiometry measurement is shown to have a 2% or better precision and has been stable over several Martian years. We describe the principle of operation of the instrument and its calibration and assess its performance from sample orbital measurements.
Various well-known agents with a favourable influence on cerebral circulation were used as a basis for creating new methods to asses the effects on this vascular region in experimental animals. A technique was worked out for radiocirculography and simultaneous radiometry, as well as for scanning and simultaneous radiometry of cat brain. Radiocirculography, followed by scintigraphy, proved to be among the best methods used for assessment of the effect of As2 on cerebral circulation. Simultaneous radiometry with the methods mentioned above had only orientational value. Radiocirculographic and scanning data after application of As2 in a dose of 10 mg/kg are close to those for nicotinic acid in a dose of 1 mg/kg. Similar to the data of the isotopic methods after application of As2 in a dose of 5 mg/kg are the results obtained with 5 mg/kg cinnarizin, which suggests a similar machanism of action.
