Plastic surgery pitfalls.

As a founding member of the physician-owned insurance carrier The Doctors' Company, the author has reviewed many plastic surgery policy claims. In this article, he presents an overview of the plastic surgery procedures that produce the most severe losses. He then offers suggestions on how to proceed with these "medical malpractice favorites." The author discusses potential antitrust traps and legal recourse for plastic surgeons.

Profile analysis in facial plastic surgery.

We devised a simple and reliable method of profile analysis for facial plastic surgery. Profile photographs are taken with the natural head position technique. Key cephalometric landmarks are then identified and digitalized from either photographs or slides, using a digitalizer with a resolution of 0.001 in. The digitalizing pad is connected to a microcomputer. The menu-driven software allows selection of multiple functions from different cephalometric systems. Data can be stored on disk for future analysis. The method is useful in preoperative planning and postoperative evaluation of facial plastic surgery procedures.

Treatment of severe postburn kyphosis with combined plastic surgery and milwaukee bracing.

STUDY DESIGN: A case is reported in which severe postburn kyphosis is treated with combined plastic surgery and Milwaukee bracing. OBJECTIVES: To demonstrate that severe kyphosis can develop secondary to burn scars and that spine surgery can be avoided. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Nothing is available in the literature on this subject. METHODS: A 14-year-old boy had severe burns of the arms, anterior neck, and anterior torso with a resulting 90 degrees stiff kyphosis. RESULTS: The patient was treated by multiple plastic surgery procedures combined with a Milwaukee brace, which corrected his kyphosis to a normal alignment. CONCLUSIONS: Spine surgery was avoided with quality plastic surgery and Milwaukee brace management.

Fifty years of the Cleft Centre in Bratislava.

In our paper, we would like to present and analyse the activities in the Cleft Centre in Bratislava between 1952 and 2001. We document the gradual development of the complex treatment and the important changes in the usage of the operative techniques and in the primary and secondary operations timing, as well as the application of the new trends in the field of plastic surgery, maxillofacial surgery, anaesthesiology, orthodontics, speech therapy, paediatrics, human genetics and psychology.

Fires and burns during plastic surgery.

Many plastic surgery procedures are performed under local anethesia. When the procedure involves the head and neck, oxygen is perilously close to the surgical field. A thorough understanding of the fire triangle will allow the plastic surgeon to develop a routine that will avoid any risk of fire. The fire triangle consists of a heat source, a fuel, and an oxidizer. By removing one component of the fire triangle, the risk of fire is averted. An in-depth look at each component is needed because fire hazards involve some surprising sources.
