General anesthesia in pedodontic practice: a survey of 46 cases.
From the study of a sample of 460 children treated under general anesthesia, it was found that the patients could be divided into two main groups: under and over six years. Under six years, most children were non-cooperative healthy children, whereas most patients over six years were unmanageable handicapped children. The age of five years seemed, in this study, to be a pivotal age: handicapped patients appeared, while the number of healthy patients tended to decrease.
[Current possibilities of fluoridation in a complex pedodontic preventive program in Hungary].
The national Children's dentistry prevention programme begun in 1986 is reported which is complex as regards both its objectives and methods. The present day home possibilities of the systemic and local fluoride prophylaxis as well as the collective and individual methods at disposal are described. Indications according to age of the various fluoride prevention methods are presented. The professional requirements and sources of error of their practical effectuation are discussed. Respective concrete tasks of Children's dentistry experts are emphasised. It is pointed out that a consequent execution of the programme is a task demanding much time and work power which requires continuous and correct cooperation in interest of the children on behalf of the personal of the health and cultural organizations.

[AIDS and pedodontics: the real risk and its prevention].
The daily increase in carriers of the AIDS virus (150,000 is the latest estimate for Italy) means that the dentist must pay the utmost attention in selecting cases at risk and in defending himself from the possibility of contagion. Albeit to a lesser extent, the pedodontist is also involved in this problem. Here situations in which the risk of contagion is greatest because of the patient's social position or associated pathologies and the difficulty of the operation required are reported and some indications are offered to guide the pedodontist's professional behaviour.
General anaesthesia of out-patients in pedodontics.
Complete dental treatment of 180 children has been undertaken under general anaesthesia. Indications for this were mental retardation and dental fear. Because of the simple technique and advantageous pharmacological properties, ketamine, and later its Hungarian analogue, Calypsol, were used.

[Preformed crowns in pedodontics. A classic and valid option].
Stainless steel crowns are even now, the best available option to restore deciduous molars with extense decay involving at least one proximal surface. Composites restorations are only an alternative to stainless steel crowns in those cases with vaste occlusal decay with no proximal involvements, even when a pulpal therapy has to be performed. With a standard technique which has remained almost unchanged, the gingival tissues response to crowns and its long term clinical results, are excellents. Preformed or non preformed ones are not two different options to work with, but two choices to consider depending the professional aptitudes and the particular condition of the tooth to be restored. Finally in those cases where the deciduous molar cannot be acceptably restored with a stainless steel crown, no new material has shown to be a reasonably alternative; then, extraction of the tooth has to be considered and adecuate measures will be taken in order to maintain the physiological occlusal development of the child inaltered.
An overview of non-pharmacological pedodontic behaviour management techniques for the general practitioner.
All members of the dental team who are involved in providing dental health services to children need to be familiar with behaviour management techniques in order to ensure that safe and high quality treatment can be delivered. Proper management of the child's behaviour will prevent the development and conditioning of poor responses to dental treatment and will aid in fostering a positive acceptance of this necessary health service. This paper briefly reviews child development in relation to behaviour management, the importance of parental attitudes in both shaping and managing behaviour and general considerations of which the dental office staff should be aware. Common non-pharmacological techniques for managing the behaviour of children in the dental office are reviewed.
