A comparison of the COG and MCNP codes in computational neutron capture therapy modeling, Part II: gadolinium neutron capture therapy models and therapeutic effects.

The goal of this study was to evaluate the COG Monte Carlo radiation transport code, developed and tested by Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, for gadolinium neutron capture therapy (GdNCT) related modeling. The validity of COG NCT model has been established for this model, and here the calculation was extended to analyze the effect of various gadolinium concentrations on dose distribution and cell-kill effect of the GdNCT modality and to determine the optimum therapeutic conditions for treating brain cancers. The computational results were compared with the widely used MCNP code. The differences between the COG and MCNP predictions were generally small and suggest that the COG code can be applied to similar research problems in NCT. Results for this study also showed that a concentration of 100 ppm gadolinium in the tumor was most beneficial when using an epithermal neutron beam.

Tissue equivalence in clinical neutron dosimetry: comparison of dose distributions in nine tissue substitutes for a d(14)Be neutron beam.

Depth dose distributions for a d(14)Be neutron beam, measured separately for total and gamma absorbed dose, are presented for nine tissue substitutes and for two field sizes. These data are used to examine methods to transform depth dose curves from one material to another. Best results are found when the local depths are transformed by constant empirical factors which are independent of depth and field size. As a physical interpretation of the empirical factors, kerma-weighted mean-free-path lengths are calculated for the interaction of the Essen neutron beam with the materials. The ratios of these free path lengths agree with the empirical factors within +/- 10%. However, for clinical dosimetry, a direct comparability of spatial absorbed dose distributions measured in two different phantom materials is only given if their corresponding transformation factor is near unity.

Neutron induced brachytherapy: a combination of neutron capture therapy and brachytherapy.

Brachytherapy is a widely used radiation therapy modality while neutron capture therapy is being intensely studied. These methods provide some advantages, but also have limitations that might be ameliorated by combining them. A technique that uses stable solid seeds or needles of Gd which are irradiated in vivo with neutrons has been evaluated. Monte Carlo calculations show that 5000 cGy of prompt gamma dose can be delivered to a treatment volume of 40 cm3 with a three-plane implant of 9-Gd needles. The tumor to normal tissue advantage of this method is as good as brachytherapy using 60Co seeds. Measurements of prompt gamma dose with films and TLD-700s in a lucite phantom verify the Monte Carlo evaluation. Dose measurements of a Gd needle in air also show that Gd is promising for this form of brachytherapy.

In-phantom neutron fluence measurements in the orthogonal Birmingham boron neutron capture therapy beam.

This paper presents the results of an experimental investigation into the performance of the Birmingham accelerator-based epithermal BNCT beam. In-phantom gold foil activation and boron trifluoride tube measurements have been used. The results have been compared with calculated response rates using Monte Carlo modeling of the entire neutron system from source to phantom and detector. The excellent agreement obtained gives us confidence in the validity of the simulations and our ability to predict accurately the neutronic performance of our BNCT facility.

[The depth distribution of neutron-capture events in 10B nuclei during the irradiation of a water phantom with neutrons from the channels of the BR-10 reactor].

The authors present the results of experimental investigations of distribution of capture events on nuclei 10B by the depth of a water phantom during its irradiation with beams T-4 and B-3 of the BR-10 reactor. A ferrous sulfate dosimeter with added boric acid was used as a detector of such events. The depth of a water phantom on which the effect of boron capture by a neutron beam is decreased 2-fold, is 1.7 cm. For the B-3 beam a curve of depth correlation of neutron capture events had a broad maximum at a depth of 4-5 cm.

[Neutron therapy in the G.D.R. VII. radiation physical fundamentals of neutron therapy (author's transl)].

In this report the physical and technical bases for the realization of neutron therapy in the GDR are summarized. As neutron source a thick beryllium target which is bombarded by 13.5 MeV deuterons from the Rossendorf cyclotron is used. Dose components are measured by paired homogeneous spherical ionization chambers of polythene and graphite. The arrangement of the whole irradiation plant is resumed.

Neutron reflection and small-angle neutron scattering studies of a fluorocarbon telomer surfactant.

Dilute aqueous phase behavior of a novel tris(hydroxymethyl)acrylamidomethane (THAM)-derived telomer bearing a perfluorohexyl hydrophobic chain, F6THAM6, has been investigated. Fluorinated polyhydroxy surfactants of this kind find use in emerging biomedical applications. Neutron reflection (NR) and drop volume surface tension (DVT) methods have been used to determine the critical micelle concentration (cmc=4.7 x 10(-4) mol x dm(-3)) and surface adsorption parameters (at the cmc NR gives a molecular area a(cmc)=67.4 and 62 A(2) and surface excess gamma(cmc)=2.46 x 10(-6) mol x m(-2)). The aggregation structures were determined by small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), indicating globular (polydisperse spheres) micelles of radius approximately 30 A are present. These findings are compared with literature on surfactants with related structures, to identify how the unusual molecular structure of F6THAM6 affects surfactant properties.

Measurements and calculations of neutron spectra modified by iron slabs bombarded by neutrons with energies up to 14 MeV.

Neutron spectra behind iron slabs of different thicknesses have been measured in the energy range from 1.6 to 14 MeV using a proton recoil spectrometer and 2H(d, n)3He and 9Be(d, n)10B neutron sources. The measured results have been compared with the predicted ones using the three dimensional Monte Carlo code MCNP 4A and pointwise cross sections from the ENDF/B-IV and ENDF/B-VI data files. The results show that the ENDF/B-IV calculations are in better agreement with the experiment than those obtained by using the ENDF/B-VI cross section data.

Adsorption of supercritical CO2 in aerogels as studied by small-angle neutron scattering and neutron transmission techniques.

Small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) has been used to study the adsorption behavior of supercritical carbon dioxide (CO2) in porous Vycor glass and silica aerogels. Measurements were performed along two isotherms (T=35 and 80 degrees C) as a function of pressure (P) ranging from atmospheric up to 25 MPa, which corresponds to the bulk fluid densities ranging from rho(CO2) approximately 0 to 0.9 gcm3. The intensity of scattering from CO2-saturated Vycor porous glass can be described by a two-phase model which suggests that CO2 does not adsorb on the pore walls and fills the pore space uniformly. In CO2-saturated aerogels an adsorbed phase is formed with a density substantially higher that of the bulk fluid, and neutron transmission data were used to monitor the excess adsorption at different pressures. The results indicate that adsorption of CO2 is significantly stronger in aerogels than in activated carbons, zeolites, and xerogels due to the extremely high porosity and optimum pore size of these materials. SANS data revealed the existence of a compressed adsorbed phase with the average density approximately 1.07 gcm3, close to the density corresponding to closely packed van der Waals volume of CO2. A three-phase model [W. L. Wu, Polymer 23, 1907 (1982)] was used to estimate the volume fraction phi3 of the adsorbed phase as a function of the fluid density, and gave phi3 approximately 0.78 in the maximum adsorption regime around rho(CO2) approximately 0.374 gcm3. The results presented in this work demonstrate the utility of SANS combined with the transmission measurements to study the adsorption of supercritical fluids in porous materials.

Precision neutron interferometric measurement of the nd coherent neutron scattering length and consequences for models of three-nucleon forces.

We have performed the first high precision measurement of the coherent neutron scattering length of deuterium in a pure sample using neutron interferometry. We find b(nd)=(6.665+/-0.004) fm in agreement with the world average of previous measurements using different techniques, b(nd)=(6.6730+/-0.0045) fm. We compare the new world average for the nd coherent scattering length b(nd)=(6.669+/-0.003) fm to calculations of the doublet and quartet scattering lengths from several modern nucleon-nucleon potential models with three-nucleon force (3NF) additions and show that almost all theories are in serious disagreement with experiment. This comparison is a more stringent test of the models than past comparisons with the less precisely determined doublet scattering length of (2)a(nd)=(0.65+/-0.04) fm.

Measured total cross sections of slow neutrons scattered by solid deuterium and implications for ultracold neutron sources.

The total scattering cross sections for slow neutrons with energies in the range 100 neV to 3 meV for solid ortho-2H2 at 18 and 5 K, frozen from the liquid, have been measured. The 18 K cross sections are found to be in excellent agreement with theoretical expectations and for ultracold neutrons dominated by thermal up scattering. At 5 K the total scattering cross sections are found to be dominated by the crystal defects originating in temperature induced stress but not deteriorated by temperature cycles between 5 and 10 K.

De-mixing dynamics of a binary liquid system in a controlled-pore glass. A neutron spin-echo spectroscopy and small angle neutron scattering study.

The temperature-induced microphase separation of the binary liquid system iso-butyric acid+heavy water (iBA + D(2)O) in a mesoporous silica glass (CPG-10-75) of nominal pore width 7.5 nm was investigated by neutron spin-echo spectroscopy (NSE) and neutron small-angle scattering (SANS). Two mixtures of different composition were studied at different scattering angles at temperatures above and below the bulk phase transition temperature. The phase separation in the pore space is found to occur at a lower temperature than the bulk transition and extends over a significant temperature range. The effective diffusion coefficient derived from NSE at low scattering angles is found to decrease by one order of magnitude from 70 degrees C to 20 degrees C. This observation is attributed to the growing size of concentration fluctuations having a cut-off at ca. 8 nm, which corresponds to the mean pore size. The dynamics of the concentration fluctuations appears to be strongly influenced by the confinement in the pores, as it differs strongly from the bulk behaviour. These results are consistent with the preliminary results of the SANS study.

Monte Carlo modelling of neutron depth dose distributions in optimizing prompt gamma in vivo neutron activation analysis systems.

Optimization of prompt gamma in vivo neutron activation analysis systems is best achieved using Monte Carlo simulation. In this study the modelling of the dimensions and materials for source holders and collimators is described and compared with experimentally derived results where feasible. Results show that valid depth doses are obtained by modelling only the central part of an IVNAA system and that the use of borated paraffin as a reflector provides acceptable thermal fluence and depth dose.

Influence of the coating thickness and type of oral delivery system (tablets, pellets) on the stability towards degradation by neutron irradiation. Validation of neutron activation III.

Enteric coated dexchlorpheniramine maleate (DCPA) tablets and pellets with varying coating thickness were subjected to several in vitro tests after irradiation by thermal neutrons in a flux of 1. 1 x 10(13) n cm-2 s-1 for 2, 4 or 15 min. The appearance of the tablet formulation changed extensively after exposure of the tablets to pile radiation. The irradiation caused the film to loosen from the surface of the core, indicating the generation of gases during the irradiation process. Already after irradiating the tablets for 2 min the disintegration and dissolution behaviour were significantly changed. The extent of tablet damage increased with increasing time of exposure and increasing thickness of the coating. Compared with the tablet formulation, the cores could resist a larger amount of irradiation since dissolution behaviour of the cores was only affected after 15 min of irradiation. This indicates that the irradiation procedure initially affects the coating of the formulation. Although the dissolution behaviour of the pellet formulations changed significantly after the irradiation procedure, the changes were too small to be attributed exclusively to radiation damage.

Microdosimetric spectra of the THOR neutron beam for boron neutron capture therapy.

A primary objective of the BNCT project in Taiwan, involving THOR (Tsing Hua Open Pool Reactor), was to examine the potential treatment of hepatoma. To characterise the epithermal neutron beam in THOR, the microdosimetry distributions in lineal energy were determined using paired tissue-equivalent proportional counters with and without boron microfoils. Microdosimetry results were obtained in free-air and at various depths in a PMMA phantom near the exit of the beam port. A biological weighting function, dependent on lineal energy, was used to estimate the relative biological effectiveness of the beam. An effective RBE of 2.7 was found at several depths in the phantom.

Characterization of moderator assembly dimension for accelerator boron neutron capture therapy of brain tumors using 7Li(p, n) neutrons at proton energy of 2.5 MeV.

The characteristics of moderator assembly dimension are investigated for the usage of 7Li(p,n) neutrons by 2.5 MeV protons in boron newtron capture therapy (BNCT) of brain tumors in the present study. The indexes checked are treatable protocol depth (TPD), which is the greatest depth of the region satisfying the dose requirements in BNCT protocol, proton current necessary to complete BNCT by 1 h irradiation, and the heat flux deposited in the Li target which should be removed. Assumed materials are D2O for moderator, and mixture of polyethylene and LiF with 50 wt % for collimator. Dose distributions have been computed with MCNP 4B and 4C codes. Consequently, realized TPD does not show a monotonical tendency for the Li target diameter. However, the necessary proton current and heat flux in the Li target decreases as the Li target diameter increases, while this trend reverses at around 10 cm of the Li target diameter for the necessary proton current in the condition of this study. As to the moderator diameter, TPD does not exhibit an apparent dependence. On the other hand, necessary proton current and heat flux decrease as the moderator diameter increases, and this tendency saturates at around 60 cm of the moderator diameter in this study. As to the collimator, increase in inner diameter is suitable from the viewpoint of increasing TPD and decreasing necessary proton current and heat flux, while these indexes do not show apparent difference for collimator inner diameters over 14 cm for the parameters treated here. The practical viewpoint in selecting the parameters of moderator assembly dimension is to increase TPD, within the technically possible condition of accelerated proton current and heat removal from the Li target. In this process, the values for which the resultant characteristics mentioned above saturate or reverse would be important factors.
