OBJECTIVE: To compare therapeutic effects of different acupoints selected on restless legs syndrome. METHODS: Eighty-one cases were randomly divided into a treatment group (n=41) treated by acupoint selection method according to nerve anatomy and combination of positive findings with neurobiological theory, and a control group (n=40) treated by traditional acupoint selection method. RESULTS: The effective rate and the markedly effective rate were 97.6% and 90.3% in the treatment group, and 75.0% and 60.0% in the control group with significant differences between the two groups (P < 0.01), and there was a significant difference between the two groups in the needed treatment times for the cured cases (P < 0.01). CONCLUSION: The acupoint selection method according to nerve anatomy, positive findings and neurobiological theory has a better therapeutic effect on restless legs syndrome as compared with the traditional method.

In this work we have observed the skin temperature of central line of the back and chest-abdomen on the human body truck by the infrared thermography. Here care the results: (a) Of all the volunteers, 57.1% central lines of the back and 7.7% central lines of the chest-abdomen of the volunteers are the longitudinal high thermal lines in normal state. (b) After moxibustion at Mingmen (GV 4) point, the temperature of 70.4% central lines of the back is going up. After moxibustion at Zhongwan (CV 12) point, the temperature of 56.0% central lines of the chest-abdomen is going up. The high thermal lines are longer and their continuity is hotter after moxibustion. (C) The lines on the back which are about 20 approximately 50 centimetres are longer than those on the chest-abdomen which are about 10-30 centimetres. The results suggest that the high thermal lines are the objective display of the temperature character on the Governor and Conception vessel. The formation of high thermal line may have some relationship with the compact connective tissue or microcirculation.

PURPOSE: Corneal innervation is mainly supported by the long posterior ciliary nerves. Anatomically, the long ciliary nerves run with the long ciliary arteries at 3 and 9 o'clock. The aim of this retrospective study was to find out if block excision of anterior uveal tumors or epithelial ingrowth located at the 3 or 9 o'clock position of the limbal circumference causes corneal neuroparalysis. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between 1980 and May 1999, a total of 151 block excisions were performed in our department (92 block excisions because of anterior uveal tumors and 59 because of cystic epithelial ingrowth to the anterior chamber). In 27 patients, anterior uveal tumors or cystic epithelial ingrowth were located at the 3 or 9 o'clock position of the limbal circumference (14 patients with cystic epithelial ingrowth and 13 patients with anterior uveal tumors). Mean age of all patients was 54.4 +/- 15.7 years at the time of surgery. Mean diameter of the block excision was 10.7 +/- 4.5 mm for tumor-patients and 9.0 +/- 1.2 mm for patients with anterior chamber cysts. Mean follow-up time was 93.6 +/- 43 months. RESULTS: Only 1 of 27 patients exhibited a moderate neuroparalytic corneal ulcer during the follow-up time. In the remaining 26 patients, no signs of clinically relevant corneal neuroparalysis such as epithelial disorders or neuroparalytic ulcers were found. CONCLUSION: Block excision of tumors or cystic epithelial ingrowth located at the 3 or 9 o'clock position of the limbal circumference did not lead to severe neuroparalytic disorders of the host cornea. This may be an important factor in postoperative management of patients undergoing block excision and corneoscleral grafting.
By removing the visual cortex unilaterally, and recording along the intact 17/18 border, we have investigated the influence of the corpus callosum on the tuning curves for stimulus disparity of cat cortical neurons. Responses to binocular stimulation were examined to movement in the same (in-phase) and in the opposite direction (antiphase) across the two retinae. In lesioned cats, as in normal cats, units were encountered which showed high sensitivity and narrow tuning for stimulus disparity. In contrast to normal cats, however, lesioned cats showed a reduced proportion of units displaying moderate binocular interactions, as well as a substantial increase in disparity-insensitive cells. The loss of disparity sensitivity after decortication was associated with a reduced incidence of both selectivity for the direction of stimulus motion and binocular activation. No large differences between the preparations were seen, however, in the ocular dominance of the total populations of cells. Differences between the normal and lesioned cats were found in binocular responses to in-phase but not to antiphase stimulation motion. Tuning curves in lesioned cats showed reduced binocular inhibition but no changes in binocular facilitation. Our findings indicate that callosal input contributes to unit disparity sensitivity by enhancing direction-selective binocular inhibition. The corpus callosum generates disparity sensitivity in a population of units in the superficial cortical layers which may play a particular role in the perception of stereoscopic depth.
