Canine leishmaniasis due to Leishmania infantum MON-1 in northern Morocco.

A seroprevalence study of canine leishmaniasis was carried out in five provinces in northern Morocco: Taounate, Al Hoceima, Zouagha Moulay Yacoub, Chefchaouen and Ouezzane. 55 localities have been concerned and a total of 1,013 dogs were screened, which represents almost 100% of the canine census. Of the screened dogs: 87 showed antibody titer > or = 100 when tested by IFAT (seroprevalence of 8.6%) and were distributed in 83 asymptomatics (without clinical symptoms) and four symptomatics (with one or several symptoms of leishmaniasis) with important variations according to the locality. Relative frequency of asymptomatic dogs was observed (8.2%), and the seroprevalence increased in middle altitude (500 m < altitude < 1,000 m) and high altitude (> or = 1,000 m). Parasites isolated from dogs were identified as L. infantum MON-1 by isoenzyme profile and Rsal digestion.

Poor efficacy of the most commonly used anthelmintics in sport horse nematodes in Morocco in relation to resistance.

Sport and leisure horses in Morocco are treated with several anthelmintics, organophosphates (dichlorvos), benzimidazoles (mostly thiabendazole) or tetrahydropyrimidines (mostly pyrantel pamoate) against nematodes. We studied three horse stables in Rabat, one in Meknes and one in Bouznika. Two of the Rabat and Bouznika stables had introduced a large number of horses from countries (Argentina or Europe) where resistance to benzimidazoles is frequent, whereas the Meknes stud farm remained without foreign introduction. The number of treatments was not very frequent (twice a year in adult horses) but the same anthelmintics were used repeatedly. No resistance to dichlorvos was detected whereas benzimidazole and pyrantel pamoate resistances were detected for the first time in African horses, outside South Africa.

Serological, clinical and histopathological changes in naturally infected dogs with Leishmania infantum in the Khemisset province, Morocco.

Canine leishmaniasis (canL) is widespread in the north of Morocco and the Leishmania infantum local strains are highly virulent. An epidemiological survey was carried out in 1993-1995 in the Khemisset province. In this region, the severity of the disease was assessed during regular visits to the identified foci by clinical examination of 323 dogs. Clinical signs were protean and occurred in various combinations. Biopsies were made on available sick dogs; the main histological changes were severe infiltration of the spleen, lymph nodes and bone marrow by mononuclear cells and hyperplasia of macrophage cells with amastigotes in their cytoplasm. The seroprevalence among 323 dog sera tested by ELISA showed a rate of 16.71%. The highest prevalence of the disease was 23.6% in the Sid El Ghandour hamlet. A comparison of the results of this study with those from the year following the first examination on the same site (Sid El Ghandour) of 67 dogs showed that the disease prevalence had not increased significantly (23.6% to 25.33%).

Anthropometry of women of childbearing age in Morocco: body composition and prevalence of overweight and obesity.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of obesity and body fat distribution of Moroccan women of childbearing age, using a panel of anthropometric measurements. DESIGN AND SETTING: A cross-sectional survey conducted in 1995 in an agricultural community, El Jadida province of Morocco. Weight, height, waist and hip circumferences and triceps, biceps, subscapular and supra-iliac skinfold thicknesses were measured. Body mass index (BMI), waist/hip ratio (WHR), sum of all and sum of trunk skinfold thicknesses were determined. SUBJECTS: In total, 1269 women aged 15-49 years from urban and rural areas were surveyed. RESULTS: The means of all anthropometric measurements including body fat were higher in urban than in rural women and increased with age. Trunk fat contributed 50% of total fat. Globally, 4.7% of women were underweight (BMI<18.5 kg m(-2)), 35.2% were overweight or obese (BMI> or =25 kg m(-2)), 10.1% were obese (BMI> or =30 kg m(-2)) and 16.8% had central obesity (WHR>0.85). The prevalence of overweight and obesity was higher in the urban than in the rural area. Underweight prevalence decreased with age, whereas that of overweight and obesity increased. All anthropometric parameters adjusted for age increased with the increase of BMI and WHR. CONCLUSIONS: Although undernutrition is still prevalent, there is an alarming prevalence of overweight and obesity in Moroccan women of childbearing age. The results indicate a shift in this country from the problem of dietary deficiency to the problem of dietary excess, and alert one to the necessity of establishing an intervention to prevent obesity-related diseases. It is necessary to address which of the anthropometric variables studied here is the best predictor of obesity-related diseases in this population.

Hydatidosis in sheep, goats and dromedaries in Morocco.

Two thousand two hundred and forty-six sheep, 510 goats and 35 dromedaries were examined for hydatid cysts. The mean prevalence was 0.7% (range 0.4-38.5%) in sheep, 1.4% (range 0.2-7.7%) in goats and 80% in dromedaries. The increase in prevalence with age of the animals was statistically significant in sheep only. In all species examined infection of the lungs was more common and important than that of the livers. The fertility rate of hydatids was 50% in sheep and 67.8% in dromedaries; and degenerative changes were shown by 65.8% of hydatids from dromedaries as compared to 16.3% in sheep. Dromedaries seem to play an important role in the epidemiology of hydatidosis in Morocco.

Epidemiology of hydatidosis/echinococcosis in Ouarzazate, the pre-Saharian region of Morocco.

In the Ouarzazate province of Southern Morocco, 1085 cattle and 358 sheep were examined for hydatid cysts. The prevalence was 44.6% (range 8.3-83.4%) in cattle and 5.3% (range 1.3-28.6%) in sheep. The prevalence increased with the age of the animals. The lung was the predominant site of infection, followed by the liver. In cattle, 14.2% of hydatid cysts were fertile and 16.4% had degenerative changes. The mean loss per head of cattle slaughtered was about 1 kg of liver and 900 g of lungs in the urban abattoirs. In monetary terms at the current price of 1980, this meant a loss of U.S. +4.5 at urban and +1.6 at rural abattoirs. The mean prevalence of infection in 61 stray dogs was 50.8%, with a mean worm burden of 413. The urban dogs had a lower infection rate (42.9%) than the rural dogs (61.5%). There were 130 dogs per 1000 inhabitants. The human population was ignorant of the life-cycle of Echinococcus granulosus and was not aware of risk of infection through dogs. Dogs become infected at abattoirs, at home slaughter and in the field by consuming dead carcasses. The maintenance and transmission of E. granulosus in animals and man is related to social, religious and cultural factors.

Kaposi's sarcoma in Morocco: a pathological study with immunostaining for human herpesvirus-8 LNA-1.

AIMS: The Maghreb region is considered to be an endemic area for classical Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) but the few published reports have focused on clinical descriptions. We report here the clinical, virological and pathological features of 26 KS cases, including 17 classic forms, eight epidemic forms and one case of post-transplant KS. METHODS: Evidence of human herpesvirus (HHV)-8 infection was detected by serology, immunohistochemistry and polymerase chain reaction. RESULTS: Antibodies directed against HHV-8 latent nuclear antigen (LNA-1/ORF73) were present in sera from all 26 KS cases and the ORF26 HHV-8 gene fragment was amplified from the tumour DNA of all patients. KS lesions that met the classical criteria for KS (spindle cells, positive endothelial markers) and were immunostained with the anti-LNA-1 marker, demonstrated typical granular intranuclear labelling of the spindle cells in all but one case of KS, in which very few spindle cells were present. Furthermore, whereas LNA-1 staining was largely confined to spindle cells in the late nodular stage, it was also observed in endothelial cells forming the walls of slit-like vessels in early patch-stage lesions. CONCLUSION: This study confirms that Morocco is an endemic area for classical KS, which remains the most frequent type of KS in this country, and emphasises the value of the LNA-1 marker for the early diagnosis of KS lesions.

Regional economic disparities and population change in Morocco.

"The paper examines patterns of population change in Morocco for the decade 1971-1981. They do not mirror those which might have been expected in view of the national economic and spatial structure of this country. The differences are attributed to international economic forces which have transcended national forces in shaping population patterns in parts of the country."

Medicine for the heart: the embodiment of faith in Morocco.

"Medicine for the Heart" is a Moroccan way of describing the power of the Quran to heal the heart, an organ and symbol that links spiritual, emotional, and physical experience. The recitation of Quranic verses offers housewives living in southeastern Saharan Morocco a way to manage emotions associated with recent social changes--emotions that distress the heart and the body. This article is a preliminary examination of how, in everyday life, the phenomenology of faith illuminates an embodied structure of well-being, where spiritual experience merges with physical and emotional experience. Combining the perspectives of the anthropology of experience and social psychology, I highlight some of the spiritual aspects of well-being that emerge in the household production of health, particularly in relation to the core cultural values of unity and interiority. The concept of the spiritual body locates this experience inside the body (in this case radiating from the heart) rather than outside (i.e., in cognitive or symbolic space).

A preliminary report on the occurrence of maedi-visna in sheep in Morocco.

A small scale serological survey for antibodies to maedi-visna virus among 13 flocks of sheep in Morocco revealed the infection in one flock. Infection appeared to be related with imported sheep. In addition, two abattoir surveys yielded, 0.1% lungs with gross and histological lesions suggestive of maedi.

Ochratoxin A in beverages from Morocco: a preliminary survey.

In a preliminary study, samples of Moroccan wines (n = 30), beers (n = 5) and fruit juices (n = 14) were assayed for ochratoxin A (OTA) by HPLC with fluorimetric detection, followed by confirmation by cleavage of the OTA molecule using carboxypeptidase with HPLC-fluorimetric determination of ochratoxin alpha (OT alpha). All the wine samples were contaminated, and the overall median OTA concentration was 0.65 microg/l (range 0.028-3.24 microg/l). One of the 14 samples of fruit juices was contaminated with a concentration of 1.16 microg/l, whereas none of the five beer samples was contaminated. This is the first report on the occurrence of OTA in various beverages from Morocco.

Is the reduction of birth intervals an efficient reproductive strategy in traditional Morocco?

Birth interval lengths are analysed from reproductive life histories of 517 Berber peasant women of the region of Marrakesh (Southern Morocco), whose fertility developed in a full traditional context. The high mortality rates associated with short birth intervals indicate that a rapid succession of births is detrimental to the progeny. The reproductive efficiency of the traditional propensity to a large family size is therefore examined by means of two different evaluations of reproductive success: the 'absolute' reproductive success (the absolute number of offspring surviving to maturity) and the 'relative' reproductive success (the proportion of live born surviving to maturity). The first shows that close pregnancies increase the fertility rate to such an extent that the associate higher number of deaths is more than compensated for, so that the women practising short birth intervals produce more surviving offspring than the others by the end of their reproductive life. The second shows that the probability of survival is directly associated with birth interval length, the efficiency of the reproductive process being therefore greater as birth intervals grow. It is suggested that these two behaviours are not contradictory, and that they represent two successive steps of the same reproductive adjustment to evolving environmental conditions.

Cataract in the Kingdom of Morocco: indications for surgery and functional results.

AIM: To investigate the results of cataract surgery in different settings in the Kingdom of Morocco. METHOD: At four separate health facilities, 100 consecutive patients undergoing ECCE cataract extraction for age-related cataract were examined pre-operatively and 6-8 weeks post-operative for changes in visual acuity. RESULTS: Thirty-four percent of patients (better eye acuity) and 95.5% of operated eyes had a visual acuity of less than 3/60 pre-operatively. Six to eight weeks post-operatively 84.0% of patients (better eye acuity) and 74.7% of operated eyes achieved a visual acuity of 6/18 or better. Of 198 eyes having an intraocular lens (IOL) implanted, 87.9% achieved 6/18 and 3.0% were less than 6/60 post-operatively. Of 202 eyes having cataract surgery without an IOL, 61.7% achieved 6/18 and 4.5% were less than 3/60. The proportion of eyes receiving an IOL in the 4 centres ranged from 29% to 74%. CONCLUSION: Monitoring the pre and post-operative acuity of cataract patients can give useful information on the indications for surgery in different settings, the use of IOLs and the visual outcome. Implantation of an IOL should be encouraged in all people having cataract surgery unless contra-indicated.

[Survey of the cycle of reproduction of red algae Gelidium sesquipedale (Turner) Thuret (case of the maritime zone of El Jadida-Jarf lasfer of Morocco)].

The industrial exploitation of the agarophyte, Gelidium sesquipedale, is an important part of the economy of Morocco, however the species is in danger of being overexploited. The development of research on the biological cycle of the species enbles a better understanding of environmental influencies on its reproduction periods and of the effect of pulling up on the growth of the thalli. This should assist in helping to avoid excessive collection of the species and to reinforce a period of rest where no collection takes place. The major are of collection supplying industries is the maritime sector of El Jadida - Jarf Lasfar. In order to study the methods of reproduction of G sesquipedale, a first series of experimentation was carried out by the INRH. Studies relating to biology and the effect of pulling up on the biometrics of the thalli of this species were carried out at two stations of the maritime zone El Jadida - Jarf lasfar: Moulay Abdellah and Sidi Bouzid during the period 2000-2002. The results obtained show that the fertile thalli are present all the year with a maximum reproductive activity in winter. The recruitment of the young slings takes place before the winter and occurs more in Sidi Bouzid. The regeneration and the growth of the thalli are carried out in spring and summer. To preserve this resource, it is necessary to put in place a system whereby one zone or area is allowed to rest whilst another area is cultivated for a year; whilst in the following year the rercise occurs.

The bacteria in the sediment of the Sahela reservoir (Morocco): potential impacts on phosphorus budget.

Temporal variations of phosphorus concentrations, bacterial abundance and activity of fractionated (i.e: size fractions: 0.22 to 0.65 microm; 0.65 to 100 microm and 0.22 to 100 microm) alkaline phosphatase (APA) were studied in situ in a benthic chamber placed in a station near urban inputs in the Sahela reservoir (Morocco) on September and October 98. Results show that low oxygen concentrations induced enhanced concentrations of orthophosphates, and bacterial numbers and APA activity reached their highest values. Anoxic conditions and the decrease of pH favour the dissolution of particulate phosphorus and the release of soluble reactive phosphorus. This release is accompanied simultaneously by an increase in the abundance of anaerobic bacteria and a progressive reduction in APA. Lastly, the release of phosphorus together with urban inputs from the city of Taounate should be considered as potential inducers of the eutrophication of the reservoir.

Health effect of human wastes use in agriculture in El Azzouzia (the wastewater spreading area of Marrakesh city, Morocco).

The use of wastewater and excreta in agriculture constitutes an important source of spread Salmonella strains and protozoan infections into the environment. This practice has been used in El Azzouzia (the wastewater-spreading area of Marrakesh city, Morocco) for several years. The available circumstantial evidence gained from epidemiological and microbiological investigations suggests that the use of untreated wastewater causes an excess of protozoan infections among children living in El Azzouzia (72%) compared with those from a control area (45%). The pathogenic protozoan infections observed were giardiasis (39%) and amoebiasis (28%). For Salmonella infection, 21.34% of the exposed children were infected, while this rate did not exceed 1.14% in the control group. The serogroups B and C were the most commonly isolated. The sewage farming children are therefore more exposed to detectable risk from pathogenic micro-organisms than the control children.
