Development of the zebrafish lymphatic system requires VEGFC signaling.

Lymphangiogenesis results in the formation of a vascular network distinct from arteries and veins that serves to drain interstitial fluid from surrounding tissues and plays a pivotal role in the immune defense of vertebrates as well as in the progression of cancer and other diseases . In mammals, lymph vessels are lined by endothelial cells possibly sprouting from embryonic veins, and their development appears to be critically dependent on the function of PROX1 and VEGFC signaling . The existence of a lymphatic system in teleosts has been a matter of debate for decades. Here we show on the morphological, molecular, and functional levels that zebrafish embryos develop a lymphatic vasculature that serves to retrieve components of the interstitium to the lymph system. We demonstrate the existence of vessels that are molecularly and functionally distinct from blood vessels and show that the development of these vessels depends on Vegfc and VEGFR-3/Flt4 signaling. These findings imply that the molecular components controlling lymphangiogenesis in zebrafish and mammals are conserved and that the zebrafish lymphatic system develops early enough to allow in vivo observations, lineage tracing, and genetic as well as pharmacological screens.

Selective transfer of cyclosporin to thoracic lymphatic systems by the application of lipid microspheres.

To overcome some of the disadvantages of present cyclosporin A (CsA) therapy, lipid microspheres incorporating CsA (lipo-CsA) were designed and their selective transfer to thoracic lymphatic systems was evaluated in vivo. It was found that concentrations of CsA in lymph-ducts were about 46 times higher after 2 h and 9-10 times higher after 3 h following oral administration of lipo-CsA, compared with those of conventional CsA. The concentrations in plasma produced by lipo-CsA were also higher than those produced by conventional CsA.

[Contribution to the study of the cervical lymphatic system of the young and adult white rats (Rattus norvegicus). II (author's transl)].

This report is based upon microdissections of 30 young white rats and 21 adults, of both sexes, in which it was studied the morphology of cervical lymphatic system performed by injection of submandibular and deep cervical nodes with latex-neoprene colored. It was verified that: there are no differences between the lymph nodes of young and adult rats: the presence of a submandibular chain with variable number of lymph nodes; this chain give efferent lymphatic branches to the deep cervical lymph nodes; the presence of 2 groups of deep cervical lymph nodes, one caudal and other cranial; those lymph nodes give efferent branches which are going to form the deep jugular trunk, the join to the jugulo-subclavian angle; the jugular trunk may go to joing to branches coming from the thoracic limb, from the thorax cavity and branches which go along the external jugular vein and omocervical vein.

Schedule for rating disabilities; hemic and lymphatic systems--VA. Final rule.

This document amends the Department of Veterans Affairs' (VA) Schedule for Rating Disabilities of the Hemic and Lymphatic Systems. The effect of this action is to update the hemic and lymphatic portion of the rating schedule to ensure that it uses current medical terminology and unambiguous criteria, and that it reflects medical advances that have occurred since the last review.

[Role of the lymphatic system in the osmoregulatory reflex of Testudo horsfieldi turtles].

Centripetal intracarotid injection of hypertonic sodium chloride solution to the tortoise Testudo horsfieldi caused an increase in the blood pressure and blood supply to the skeletal muscles. The protein content of the blood and lymph decreased, their fractional composition being changed. The results obtained indicate that in the tortoise the lymphatic system is involved into realization of osmoregulatory reflex.

[Healing effects of several ecological exposure factors on the lymphatic system].

The structural and functional responses of lymph nodes to environmental influences have common stereotypic features; however, they can vary with the nature of an influencing factor and the functional specialization of the lymph node. In this view, the morphological and functional status of lymph nodes can be regarded as markers of environmental impact on the lymphatic system. Approaches to correcting blood and lymph circulation have been developed via combined exposure of the body's internal environment to sorbent therapy, balneological procedures at the Siberian resorts, biological flavonoids, and derivatives of Siberian raw plant materials.

[Results of delayed treatment of patients with malignant tumors of the lymphatic system].

The causes, with considerably influence the advancement of cancer process have been investigated in patients with lymphatic system tumours admitted to the Department of Chemotherapy at the Center of Oncology in Cracow. It has been revealed, that the delay in the treatment was mainly due to false first diagnosis as well as the negligence of the symptoms by the patients themselves and also to consulting medically unrecognized "healers" before undertaking proper, specialized treatment. It has been observed, that more than every fourth patient took advice of "non-doctors", i.e. bioenergy-therapists, incompetent healers, herbalists and so forth. These factors by influencing further delay in the treatment, diminish its chances.
