Fluoride uptake in plaque-covered enamel after treatment with the fluoride lacquer Duraphat.

The amount of alkali-soluble and alkali-insoluble fluoride was determined in human enamel after one- and six-hour treatments with Duraphat. The application was carried out on: (1) slightly demineralized enamel covered with artificial plaque, (2) cleaned, slightly demineralized enamel, and (3) sound enamel without pre-treatment. After a single Duraphat treatment lasting six hours, fluoride uptake was higher than after Duraphat treatment for just one hour in all experimental groups. More fluoride was acquired in both slightly demineralized, plaque-covered and slightly demineralized, cleaned enamel than in sound enamel. Plaque significantly hampered the formation of alkali-soluble fluoride precipitation on demineralized enamel, but its influence on the amount of fluoride taken up by the enamel was minor.

Influence of lacquer thinner and some organic solvents on reproductive and accessory reproductive organs in the male rat.

The effects of thinner and its main components, toluene, xylene, methanol, and ethyl acetate, on reproductive and accessory reproductive organs in male rats were studied. The vapour from these organic solvents was inhaled twice a day for 7 d. Following inhalation of thinner vapour for 7 d, the weights of the testes and prostate fell and acid phosphatase activity in the prostate and plasma testosterone levels were significantly decreased compared with the control group. Both ethyl acetate and xylene caused a decrease in the weight of the testes and accessory reproductive organs, as well as reducing acid phosphatase activity in the prostate and plasma testosterone levels. In contrast, toluene and methanol had no effect on organ weights, circulating testosterone levels, or on enzyme activity. Body weight was decreased by inhalation of thinner or ethyl acetate vapour. Spermatozoa levels in the epididymis were decreased by inhalation of ethyl acetate and xylene vapour. These results suggest that thinner, particularly the components ethyl acetate and xylene, interfere with the functions of the testes and accessory reproductive organ; toluene has no effect on these functions.

[Dental pulp reactions and pulp protection: traditional underlayers versus dentin adhesive lacquer].

The dental pulp possesses an intrinsic healing capacity, by which pulpal reactions remain initially localised; they are often completely reversible. The younger and healthier the pulp is, the greater its healing capacity will be. Only in case of bacterial infection will the sterile pulpal inflammation convert into a local necrosis of the pulpal tissue that gradually will expand apically until the whole pulp is contaminated. The profit-effect of pulpal protection by means of traditional calcium hydroxide medicaments is compared with a more modern adhesive dentin sealing. Potential pulpal response to restorative materials and procedures are reviewed. Finally, clinical guidelines for optimal pulpal protection and dentinal sealing are formulated.
