Experimental vapor pressures of 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imides and a correlation scheme for estimation of vaporization enthalpies of ionic liquids.

Vapor pressures for a series of 1-n-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (alkyl = ethyl, butyl, hexyl, and octyl) ionic liquids (ILs) were measured by the integral effusion Knudsen method. Thermodynamic parameters of vaporization for ILs were calculated from these data. The absence of decomposition of ILs during the vaporization process was proved by IR spectroscopy. Enthalpies of vaporization of ILs were correlated with molar volumes and surface tensions of the compounds.

Conformational equilibrium of bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl) imide anion of a room-temperature ionic liquid: Raman spectroscopic study and DFT calculations.

The structure of bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl) imide (TFSI-) in the liquid state has been studied by means of Raman spectroscopy and DFT calculations. Raman spectra of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium (EMI+) TFSI- show relatively strong bands arising from TFSI- at about 398 and 407 cm(-1). Interestingly, the 407 cm(-1) band, relative to the 398 cm(-1) one, is appreciably intensified with raising temperature, suggesting that an equilibrium is established between TFSI- conformers in the liquid state. According to DFT calculations followed by normal frequency analyses, two conformers of C2 and C1 symmetry, respectively, constitute global and local minima, with an energy difference 2.2-3.3 kJ mol(-1). The wagging omega-SO2 vibration appears at 396 and 430 cm(-1) for the C1 conformer and at 387 and 402 cm(-1) for the C2 one. Observed Raman spectra over the range 380-440 cm(-1) were deconvoluted to extract intrinsic bands of TFSI- conformers, and the enthalpy of conformational change from C2 to C1 was evaluated. The enthalpy value is in good agreement with that obtained by theoretical calculations. We thus conclude that a conformational equilibrium is established between the C1 and C2 conformers of TFSI- in the liquid EMI+TFSI-, and the C2 conformer is more favorable than the C1 one.

Structure and dynamics of N-methyl-N-propylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide ionic liquid from molecular dynamics simulations.

Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were performed on N-methyl-N-propylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (mppy+TFSI-) from 303 to 393 K to improve understanding of the structure and ion transport of this ionic liquid. The density, ion self-diffusion coefficients, conductivity, and viscosity of mppy+TFSI- predicted from MD simulations are in good agreement with experimental measurements. The time-dependent shear modulus of the ionic liquids was calculated and compared with that for nonionic liquids. On average each mppy+ cation was found to be coordinated by four TFSI- anions. The angular distributions of N(TFSI-)-N(mppy+)-N(TFSI-) and N(mppy+)-N(TFSI-)-N(mppy+) exhibit a maximum at 80-90 degrees and a second maximum at 180 degrees . Correlation of ion motion was found to lower ionic conductivity by approximately one-third from the expected value based upon ion self-diffusion coefficients. Rotational motion of the cation and anion are anisotropic with the degree of anisotropy increasing with decreasing temperature. Electrostatic interactions are responsible for slowing down the dynamics of the ionic liquid by more than an order of magnitude and a dramatic decrease of the time-dependent shear modulus.

Structure of the electrical double layer on the aqueous solution side of the polarized interface between water and a room-temperature ionic liquid, tetrahexylammonium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide.

The structure of the electrical double layer on the aqueous solution side has been studied by measuring electrocapillary curves at the polarized interface between a room-temperature ionic liquid (RTIL), tetrahexylammonium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, and water (W) at different concentrations of LiCl. Thermodynamic analysis of the electrocapillary curves indicates that Li+ ions negatively adsorb at the point of zero charge. The adsorption of Li+ and Cl- ions in the polarized potential window of about 200 mV can be explained by the Gouy's double layer model, and the specific adsorption of Li+ and Cl- ions at the RTIL|W interface is negligible within the polarized potential window.

Isotope effects and syn selectivity in the ene reaction of triazolinedione with conjugated enones: aziridinium imide or an open intermediate mechanism?

The ene reaction of 4-methyl-1,2,4-triazoline-3,5-dione (MTAD) with phorone-d(6) (5-d(6)) shows an inverse beta-secondary isotope effect and with mesityl oxide-d(3) (7-d(3)) proceeds with 93% syn selectivity. These results are consistent with a mechanism involving the formation of an aziridinium imide intermediate in the rate-determining step. An open biradical or dipolar intermediate is excluded by them.

Conversion of aryl azides to O-alkyl imidates via modified Staudinger ligation.

[reaction: see text] o-Carboalkoxy triarylphosphines are shown to react with aryl azides to provide Staudinger ligation products bearing O-alkyl imidate linkages. This is in contrast to alkyl azides whose ligation to o-carboalkoxy triarylphosphines has been reported to yield amide-linked materials. This extension of the Staudinger ligation for coupling of abiotic reagents under biocompatible conditions highlights the utility of commercially available triarylphosphines through which suitable linkers can be attached via an ester moiety.

A novel pyrrolidine imide catalyzed direct formation of alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones from unmodified ketones and aldehydes.

A method for direct, stereoselective preparation of (E)-alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones from ketones and aldehydes, promoted by a novel pyrrolidine imide organocatalyst, has been developed in moderate to high yields. Unlike the Claisen-Schmidt condensation and Lewis acid catalyzed tandem aldol-dehydration processes, this method provides mild reaction conditions to access alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones from simple, unmodified ketones. Phosphine gold(I) bis-(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imidate complexes as new highly efficient and air-stable catalysts for the cycloisomerization of enynes.

[reaction: see text] A study concerning the synthesis of new phosphine gold(I) complexes using the bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imidate moiety as a weakly coordinating counter-anion is described. These new air-stable complexes are more convenient to prepare, store, and handle and are exceedingly active for the catalysis of a wide range of enynes cycloisomerizations.

Diastereoselective, titanium-mediated cyclization of omega-vinyl tethered imides.

[reaction: see text] Diastereoselective reductive coupling reactions of omega-vinyl tethered cyclic imides are achieved by a preexisting stereocenter at an allylic position. Particularly noteworthy is the effective use of a 1:2 mixture of Ti(O-i-Pr)4 and n-BuLi to afford the N-acylhemiaminal products in good yields.

An unexpected hydrolysis pH-rate profile, at pH values less than 7, of the labile imide, ICRF-187: (+)-1,2-bis-(3,5-dioxopiperazin-1-yl)propane.

The hydrolysis of the cardioprotectant and anticancer agent, ICRF-187 (or ADR-529) and the structurally similar model compound, 4-methylpiperazine-2,6-dione (4-MP), was investigated in the acid to neutral pH range at 25 degrees C and an ionic strength of 0.5 (sodium chloride). Their solution stability was shown to be compromised compared to 3-methylglutarimide (3-MG) and other imides. It appears that the tertiary piperazine nitrogens of ICRF-187 and 4-MP significantly contributed to the instability of these compounds over this pH range. Unexpectedly, bell-shaped curves were observed in the pH-rate profiles. A change in the rate-determining step from tetrahedral intermediate formation in the weakly acidic pH region to breakdown of the tetrahedral intermediate in the more acidic pH regions was proposed as an explanation for the bell-shaped curves. The piperazine nitrogen was implicated in the hydrolytic pathways that occur within these pH regions; the mechanism of involvement was dependent on the state of ionization of the parent molecule and the tetrahedral intermediate.

Coordination chemistry of the bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide anion: molecular interactions in room temperature ionic liquids.

Room temperature ionic liquids composed of bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide anions and 1,3-ethylmethylimidazolium (EMI) cations are shown to stabilize monomeric ligand deficient transition metal complexes via four distinct binding modes: monodentate nitrogen or oxygen coordination and/or bidentate oxygen-oxygen' or nitrogen-oxygen coordination (eta1-N, eta1-O, eta2-O,O' and eta2-N,O).

The molecular structure of N-fluorobis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide, NF(SO(2)CF(3))(2), as studied in the gas phase by electron diffraction restrained by ab initio calculations.

The structure of N-fluorobis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, prepared by a relatively safe and easy method, has been determined by gas-phase electron diffraction (GED), employing the SARACEN method, with flexible restraints based on the MP2/6-311G* structure, and by X-ray crystallography at 150 K. The strongly electron-withdrawing CF(3) and SO(2)CF(3) groups make the C-S and N-S distances long, averaging 187.7(3) and 171.7(3) pm, respectively, in the gas phase. The gas consists of two conformers, one (75%) with a CF(3) group on each side of the SNS plane, one anti-periplanar and one syn-periplanar to the further N-S bond (ap, sp), and the other with both CF(3) groups on the same side, i.e. denoted ap, ap. These conformers have very different SNS angles, 126.9(9) degrees and 117.1(17) degrees respectively. In the crystal all molecules have the ap, sp conformation, with parameters similar to those found for this conformer in the gas phase.

Lithium solvation in bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide-based ionic liquids.

The lithium solvation in (1 -x)(EMI-TFSI), xLiTFSI ionic liquids where EMI(+) is the 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium cation and TFSI(-) the bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide anion, is shown by Raman spectroscopy to involve essentially [Li(TFSI)(2)](-) anionic clusters for 0 < x < 0.4, but addition of stoichiometric amounts of solvents S such as oligoethers changes the lithium solvation into [Li(S)(m)](+) cationic clusters; the lithium transference number in TFSI-based ionic liquid electrolytes for lithium batteries should thus be strongly improved.

Purification of the chloroplast-membrane dicyclohexylcarbodi-imide-binding proteolipid by ion-exchange chromatography.

An efficient, mild and rapid procedure is reported for the separation of the dicyclohexyl-carbodi-imide-binding protein of chloroplast membranes from endogenous lipid components. By the use of ion-exchange chromatography the chloroplast proteolipid can be successfully separated from the major part of chlorophyll and other membrane lipids while being retained in a butan-1-ol milieu.
