[Sympathy, desire and physical attraction in the student-patient relationship. Encounter with Mrs. Kelley during my internship].

During an internship in pneumology the author made the acquaintance of Mrs. Kelley, a young and likeable patient. While taking the history he experienced the development of a subtle erotic tension between them. When her husband and children joined them Mrs. Kelley preferred to be examined physically and sent her family out of the room. This situation made the student insecure and he could no longer approach this patient like other patients. This article contains reflections on the incident which helped the author to cope with that particular incident and comparable situations. He also developed proposals to include this aspect in the medical curriculum.

[Primary care training during internship - quality and organization.].

AIMS: In 2000 a new regulation regarding medical licensure came into effect requiring a three-month rotation at a primary health care centre during internship. The aim of this study was to explore the interns' attitude towards this experience, and particularly to find out how well the training was organized, the supervision they received, and the quality of teaching at the health care centres. METHODS: In 2002 a survey was mailed to all interns (a total of 65) who had completed training at primary health care centres during 2000 and 2001. Five interns were unreachable and we obtained 38 replies (63% of those reachable, and 58% of target population). RESULTS: The interns received clinical training in providing comprehensive services as well as formal teaching. If an intern needed assistance with patient care he/she was almost always able to obtain help within 10 minutes. In 92% of cases, experienced doctors were available for the interns to consult with during off-duty emergencies. CONCLUSIONS: Our results indicate that the current method of teaching interns in the primary health care setting is of good quality, the variety of work experience is positive, and the work environment is satisfactory. Overall the interns expressed satisfaction with their training. A few areas were identified as needing improvement. Further research is needed to assess whether the interns achieve their aims with regard to knowledge, attitude and skills in family practice.

Medical library internship at NIH.

The internship program for medical librarians sponsored by the National Institutes of Health was begun in 1964 and was approved by the Medical Library Association. The program ensures a "planned and balanced development of...capabilities," and "an intensified, systematic, and broad working knowledge and understanding of all phases of librarianship." An outline of the program is provided.

Politically correct ... a nursing responsibility enhanced by the Nurse in Washington Internship.

Understanding the legislative process is the right of every citizen. Being concerned, knowledgeable, and committed to political activity is the responsibility of each citizen. Over two million American citizens are registered nurses. Nursing's responsibility is to prepare nurses to be politically knowledgeable, correct and active in the establishment of health care policy which affects the nation's citizens. One opportunity to achieve this in nursing practice is to use the knowledge shared at the Nurse in Washington Internship (NIWI).
