Guidelines for prophylactic radical lymph node dissection in cases of carcinoma of the external ear.

All cases of squamous-cell carcinoma of the external ear that were treated at the ENT Clinic, University Hospital, Lund, Sweden, between 1970 and 1977 were analyzed retrospectively to determine parameters for predicting the development of metastases. These cases included 62 males and 3 females, with a mean age of 77 years. The frequency of metastases for these patients was 16.4%. The carcinomas were graded according to four parameters: depth of growth, mode of invasion, cellular differentiation, and cellular plasmolymphocytic response. We concluded that depth of growth and mode of invasion were the most useful of these parameters and that prophylactic lymph node dissection should be performed in cases of tumors larger than 4 cm in diameter, of tumors infiltrating the cartilage, and of smaller tumors with maximum scores for depth of growth and mode of invasion.

[Plastic surgery of aplasia of the external ear. Apropos of 65 cases].

Principles underlying reconstructive surgery of external ear for major aplasia are described and results presented for 65 patients treated using a cartilaginous framework of a costal autograft as described by B. Brent. Possibilities are discussed of combining this technic with auditory function surgery and the wearing of an auditory prosthesis within the framework of general care of major aplasias.

[Hemangioma of external ear: an analysis of 8 cases].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate approaches of diagnosis and therapy to hemangioma of external ear and improve the effects of diagnosis and therapy. METHOD: Eight cases of hemangioma of external ear were analyzed retrospectively. All patients were unilateral hemangioma. 5 were performed digital subtraction angiography (DSA) before operation, of which 3 were performed embolization simultaneously. 7 were operated, 1 was not done. Racemose hemangioma was 5 and cavernous hemangioma was 2 according to pathologic diagnosis. RESULT: All patients have followed up 1 to 5 years, 5 were healed, 2 were controlled, and 1 was not treated. CONCLUSION: Surgery was effective approach to hemangioma of adults. It suggested that it was the key of controlling bleeding during operation that DSA and embolization before operation or ligating artery of blood supply during operation.

External ear transfer function modeling: a beamforming approach.

In this article, a beamformer is proposed as a functional model for the spatial and temporal filtering characteristics of the external ear. The output of a beamformer is a weighted combination of the data received at an array of spatially distributed sensors. The beamformer weights and array geometry determine its spatial and temporal filtering characteristics. A procedure is described for choosing the weights to minimize the mean-squared error between the beamformer response and the measured response of the external ear. The effectiveness of the model is demonstrated by designing a beamformer of several hundred weights that duplicates and interpolates the measured external ear response of a cat over broad ranges of frequency and direction. A limited investigation of modeling performance as a function of array geometry is reported.
