In previous studies it had been shown that leukotriene-B4 [LTB4] concentrations in the exhaled breath mirror the inflammatory activity of the airways if the respiratory tract has been exposed to occupational hazards. In diving the respiratory tract is exposed to cold and dry air and the nasopharynx, as the site of breathing-gas warming and humidification, is bypassed. The aim of the present study was to obtain LTB4-concentrations in the exhaled breath and spirometric data of 17 healthy subjects before and after thirty minutes of technically dried air breathing at normobar ambient pressure. The exhaled breath was collected non-invasively, via a permanently cooled expiration tube. The condensate was measured by a standard enzyme immunoassay for LTB4. Lung function values (FVC, FEV1, MEF 25, MEF 50) were simultaneously obtained by spirometry. The measured pre- and post-exposure LTB4- concentrations as well as the lung function values were in the normal range. The present data gave no evidence for any inflammatory activity in the subjects' airways after thirty minutes breathing technically dried air.

Dynamics of cardiac rhythm has been considered according to rhythmocardiographic characteristics of heart rate under orthostatic test and one-stage step-test in four altitude chamber experiments where air under pressure of 0.4-1.1 MPa is used as a breathing mixture. It is shown that these characteristics linearly depend on the partial nitrogen and oxygen pressure and hyperbaric bradycardia essentially decreases in the final period of isopression due to toxic oxygen effect. Cytochrome C decreases hyperbaric bradycardia. Under hyperbaric conditions the regulation of cardiac rhythm proceeds with altered central vegetative effects provided a direct effect of higher nitrogen and oxygen pressure on the sinusal node cells.

The post-mortem findings of 4 sport divers involved in accidents showed air embolism of the heart as well as 2 subcutaneous emphysemas of shoulder and neck. The lungs were distended and the viscera were hyperaemic. The pleura showed petechiae and small patchy hemorrhages. In microscopic examination foci of alveolar hemorrhages of the lungs and, occasionally, muscosal rupture of small branches of the bronchial tree and of the bronchioli could be determined. The most likely causes for the accidents are discussed and special attention is given to panicking under water.
