[Gestural forms of communication in primates. I. Development of gestural forms of communication in ontogenesis and phylogenesis].

The gestural and tactile forms of communication using arms among the young and adult specimen of lower monkeys of subfamily Cercopithecoidea and higher monkeys of subfamily Hominioidea have been investigated. It has been concluded that gestures are the new form of phylogenesis in comparison with the contact patterns, their development is generally connected with the aggressive behaviour. The growing differentiation of gestures connected with the transition from participation of the whole arm to the leading role of the hand and finger gestures has been determined. The frequency of gestures is closely connected with the species structural organization and ecology.

Early intervention using simultaneous communication with deaf infants: the effect on communication development.

This report presents findings on an independent evaluation of an early intervention program for severely and profoundly deaf children. Located in Vancouver, British Columbia, this comprehensive program served families with children under age 3. The evaluation included comparison with a matched sample of deaf children without intervention. Included were a developmental assessment and videotape of linguistic and social interactions. Results indicated more developmentally mature communication and higher-quality interaction in families who had received intervention.

Greenlanders in hospital; lack of language understanding is not always a hindrance to intercultural communication. Comparison of interviews of Greenlandic patients and their Danish therapists with respect to concepts of communication, patient satisfaction, disease, and health.

In four hospitals in Greenland, 50 Greenlandic patients and their Danish therapists have been interviewed about the same topics. The interviews were semistructured with open ended questions on the following subjects: Language difficulties, perception of diagnosis, patients satisfaction and points of criticism, perception of disease and treatment, and experience of health in general. In spite of language difficulties and insufficient communication, patient satisfaction occurred in most of the consultations. There was a tendency towards the elder patients being more satisfied than the younger. It does not seem to be a necessity to achieve a good treatment-result that the patients and the therapists speak the same language and share the same concepts of health and disease. Where the foreign health service can be limited so that it is not viewed as a menace to culturally related concept of disease, the consultations give rise to the best patient-satisfaction.

Policy issues relevant to evaluation of interactive health communication applications. The Science Panel on Interactive Communication and Health.

This article provides an analysis of policy-related issues associated with the evaluation of interactive health communication (IHC) applications. These include an assessment of the current health and technology policy environment pertinent to public (government, education, public health) and private (medical care providers, purchasers, consumers, IHC developers) IHC stakeholders and discussion of issues likely to merit additional consideration by these stakeholders in the future.

Intercellular communication in a positional field. Ultrastructural correlates and tracer analysis of communication between insect epidermal cells.

The junctional membrane in the epidermal cells of the larval beetle (Tenebrio molitor L.) is comprised of macular gap junctions embedded in septate junctions. Ultrastructural and morphometric analysis of the distribution of gap junctions within the segmental epidermis suggests that this junction alone could account for the high electrotonic coupling recorded for the epidermal sheet. Analysis of the lanthanum-impregnated septate junction makes it doubtful that this junction serves as a communicating channel between beetle cells. A new model for the septate junction is presented in which pleated septa, less than 30 A thick, connect adjacent plasma membranes; the septa themselves are interconnected by two interseptal platforms that are coplanar with the plasma membranes. Iontophoretic injection of organic tracers into single epidermal cells suggests that only molecules of less than MW 1000 can transfer between cells through low-resistance junctions.

Communication monitoring: shaping CDC's emergency risk communication efforts.

CDC develops and delivers health messages for a variety of audiences, including the public, health care professionals, public health researchers and practitioners, and policy makers. News media outlets--because of their broad reach and potential to influence knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors--are major channels for disseminating messages to these audiences. CDC has routinely monitored news outlets to identify message/information gaps and opportunities. The 9/11 terrorist attacks and the anthrax incidents that followed required CDC to transform its media monitoring system into a broader communication monitoring system, with both listening and telling functions, to support CDC's public health emergency response.

Focus on Communications: Communicating the Message: Clarifying the Controversies About Caffeine.

Today's "coffee culture" and the widespread availability of caffeine-containing foods and beverages fuel the ongoing study of caffeine and its subsequent coverage by the media. Although the media has become influential in communicating health and nutrition information to the public, coverage of emerging science, such as the study of caffeine, does not necessarily bring clarity or improved understanding for consumers. This article highlights the current knowledge of caffeine's effects on health, with emphasis on the most common areas of interest and confusion. To address persistent misperceptions about caffeine, this article also accentuates the need for nutrition professionals to help put the findings of caffeine research into perspective and suggests practical ways to do this.

Bell Operating Co.; furnishing of customer premises equipment, enhanced services and cellular communications services and North American Telecommunications Association--Federal Communications Commission. Proposed rule.

The Commission has issued a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking that addresses the questions of whether, following divestiture, Bell Operating Companies' offerings of enhanced services, customer premises equipment or cellular communications services should be subject to structural separation requirements and, if so, whether the degree of separation currently prescribed by Commission Rules should be modified to accommodate the effects of the BOCs' divestiture. The purpose of this proceeding is to determine whether the divestiture's structural separation of AT&T's monopoly activities and competitive activities renders the Commission's structural separation requirements unnecessary or unduly burdensome to the divested operating companies. If so, the Commission's structural separation requirements may be relaxed, eliminated or otherwise modified.

Establishment of a Medical Implant Communications Service in the 402-405 MHz band. Federal Communications Commission. Final rule.

This document establishes a Medical Implant Communications Service (MICS) operating in the 402-405 MHz band. MICS operations will consist of high-speed, ultra-low power, non-voice transmissions to and from implanted medical devices such as cardiac pacemakers and defibrillators. The rules will allow use of newly-developed, life-saving medical technology without harming other users of the frequency band.

Picture archiving and communication systems and videoconference for medical communication.

The following summarize the present capability and future potential for telecommunications in radiology: 1. When used as a central archiving, reporting, and directing unit PACS principally leads to an increased economy and centralization and allows a more rational and efficient use of experienced staff and a better education for the young physicians. 2. PACS also have the capability to produce composite imaging, whereby an overall report, consisting of different radiologic examinations can be obtained. The integration of image and text data and the digital link between specialized clinical departments also makes immediate transmission of images and reports possible. 3. Analog and digital videoconferences permit long distance communication and consultation between specialists, without physicians and radiologists having to change location. These television conferences also lead to an important enhancement of education, providing interaction with specialists who might not usually be available.
