An abattoir study of tuberculosis in a herd of farmed elk.

The purpose of this study was to examine the prevalence and distribution of grossly visible lesions of tuberculosis in a herd of 344 North American elk (Cervus elaphus) depopulated during a three-month period in 1991. Abattoir inspection detected mycobacterial lesions in 134 (39.8%) of the 337 animals received for slaughter. The prevalence of lesions increased with the age of the animals. Lesions were predominantly suppurative rather than caseous, and mineralization was less evident than in tuberculous lesions in cattle. Lesions occurred predominantly in lymph nodes, and lungs were the only organs in which mycobacterial lesions were found. The distribution of lesions suggested that aerosol transmission was the most significant means of spread of the disease within the herd. Giant liver flukes (Fascioloides magna) were observed in approximately 80% of the adult elk.

Occurrence of Listeria species in an abattoir for cattle and pigs in Bosnia and Hercegovina.

Altogether 496 samples of meat, lymph nodes, process water and swabs from different places in the abattoir were examined for the presence of Listeria spp. L. monocytogenes was isolated from 31 (6%) and other Listeria spp. from 65 (13%) samples L. monocytogenes was isolated from 2 of 10 beef meat samples, 4 of 50 pig meat samples and 1 of 21 lymph nodes of pigs. No Listeria bacteria were isolated from lymph nodes of cattle. The highest percentage of Listeria was recovered from the unclean sections (cattle 22% and pigs 27%) and the highest frequency was observed during the winter months.

Biochemical and haematological values in abattoir pigs with and without subclinical lesions.

The biochemical and haematological profiles of 379 pigs with or without various gross pathological lesions in an abattoir in Zimbabwe were studied to see whether there were any differences between the levels of haematological and biochemical values, and health status (with and without pathological lesions). On the basis of observable gross pathology, 134 pigs were classified as having one or more subclinical lesions (liver milk spot, pneumonia, pleurisy, pericarditis, abscesses and arthritis). Seventy-six of these were males and 58 females. There were observable sex differences in the mean haematological and biochemical values obtained. Erythrocyte counts showed significant differences in mean values (P < 0.05) among groups of pigs found with various pathological lesions. The biochemical values showed significant group differences for ALP, ALT, AST, and LDH.

Serological and histopathological studies on toxoplasma Gondii among the workers and the slaughtered animals in Tanta Abattoir, Gharbia Governorate.

Toxoplasma gondii is one of the important zoonotic parasite of worldwide zoological and geographical distribution. In this paper, Toxoplasma antibodies were investigated among workers (21) and slaughtered animals (258) in Tanta abattoir. The indirect haemagglutination test (IHAT) was positive among workers (52.4%) at titers 1/64, 1/256, 1/512 and slaughtered animals (44.1%), at titers > 1:64. The indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT done for animals only) was positive (48.8%) at titers 1/40. Histopathological study on infected prescapular lymph nodes of the examined animals showed different clinical pictures, which coincided with the serological results. It was concluded that meat should not be consumed uncooked or undercooked.

Trichinosis in sows slaughtered at a Kentucky abattoir.

From July 26 to 30, 1976, diaphragmatic pillar samples were collected from 513 sows slaughtered at a federally inspected abattoir in Kentucky. The sows represented 5 marketing areas: Rushville, In (186); Cincinnati, Oh )158); Indianapolis, In (70); Georgetown, Ky (54); and Columbus, Oh (45). Using the pooled-sample digestion technique, 3 dead trichina larvae were identified in 1 sample pooled from 15 diaphragms (10 g each). An attempt to identify the individually infected sow(s) was unsuccessful, but the pooled sample originated from animals marketed at Rushville, In. The prevalence (1 of 513) was 0.194%.

Oestrid head maggots in slaughtered sheep in Cairo abattoir.

Oestrosis or infestation of sheep, goats, ibex, argali and sometimes man with Oestrus ovis maggots is a real problem in sheep-farming areas allover the world. Parasitism in sheep may be benign, the majority of cases do not terminate fatally, but death may come within a week after appearance of aggravated symptoms. In man, ophthalmomyiasis (sometimes nasopharyngeal) may be benign to destruction of the eye ball or the entire eye in misdiagnosis. In the present study, examination of 1200 slaughtered sheep heads at Cairo abattoir, showed 104 (8.67%) infested with O. ovis maggots. Sheep were parasitized all the year round with more or less maximum number (12.5%) in September. The sex ratio of parasitized sheep (female to male) was 1:2.71. A total of 556 maggots were recovered allover the year with a peak in March (12.6%). The peak for the first instar larvae recovered was September (17.4%), for the second instar was March (15.7%) and for the third instar was June (11.6%). Older sheep were more infested (12.0%) with oestrosis than smaller ones (6.87%). The whole results were discussed.

Anti-toxoplasma antibodies in butchers and slaughtered sheep and goats in Jeddah Municipal abattoir, Saudi Arabia.

Toxoplasma gondii is a zoonotic parasite of world-wide distribution. It is more or less endemic in all countries of the Middle East. In Jeddah Municipal abattoir, anti-Toxoplasma IgG was found to be 39% in sheep and 28% in goats as indicated by IHAT. On the other hand, anti-Toxoplasma IgG and IgM in butchers were 80% and 20% respectively, as indicated by the micro-ELISA. The risk of Toxoplasma transmission particularly, from meat inadequately cooked was discussed.

Abattoir survey of congenital reproductive abnormalities in ewes.

A survey of abnormalities of the reproductive tract of female sheep was undertaken at two abattoirs in the south west of England over a period of 12 months. During the survey, 9970 reproductive tracts from cull ewes and 23,536 tracts from nulliparous sheep (prime lambs and hoggets) were examined. A total of 655 (6.57 per cent) ewes and 459 (1.95 per cent) nulliparous sheep had abnormalities of the reproductive tract. Of these, congenital abnormalities of the paramesonephric ducts accounted for 2.4 per cent of the ewes and 7.4 per cent of the nulliparous sheep, congenital abnormalities of the ovaries accounted for 2.6 per cent of the ewes and 7.4 per cent of the nulliparous sheep and cystic structures that were considered to have been of congenital origin accounted for 27.2 per cent of the ewes and 52.7 per cent of the nulliparous sheep. The most common lesion was paraovarian cysts (26.6 per cent of ewes and 39.0 per cent of nulliparous sheep), but few of these appeared to have affected the sheep's reproductive function. Several specific conditions were recorded, including some described for the first time in sheep. Uterus unicornis occurred in 20 sheep and other forms of segmental aplasia of parts of the paramesonephric ducts occurred in a further 13 animals. Uterus didelphys occurred in six sheep, and 11 animals were intersex. Intersex sheep had vestigial structures that were derived from the paramesonephric ducts, hypoplastic or masculinised gonads and some had masculinised external genitalia. Ovarian hypoplasia occurred in 34 sheep, and in a further 12 mainly nulliparous animals, the ovaries were fused. Sixty nulliparous animals and two ewes had hydatids of Morgagni.

Liver fluke infections of cattle in Mali. An abattoir survey on prevalence and geographic distribution.

Six hundred and ninety two cattle, slaughtered in various abattoirs in Mali between August 1983 and November 1984 were examined for evidence of Fasciola gigantica and Dicrocoelium hospes infections. A great variation in geographic prevalence was observed. Sufficient knowledge was acquired to demonstrate both the importance of fascioliasis in some areas and also the high prevalence of D. hospes in other areas. We suggest that the difference in prevalence from one geographic area to another is influenced by local climatic conditions, presence or absence of rivers and lakes, and differences in livestock management practices by various ethnic groups.

Ovarian activity of Yankasa Sheep using abattoir specimens.

Seventy-five pairs of ovaries from Yankasa Sheep aged 1 1 2 to 3 years were collected from a Zaria abattoir for 12 months, to study the ovarian activity. It was observed that ovarian activity in Yankasa sheep was year-round with maximum activity occurring during the rainy and pre-rain seasons. These periods of maximum ovarian activity might be caused by the availability of pasture during the rainy and pre-rain seasons, since Nigerian sheep obtain most of their food by grazing available pasture.

Ovarian activity of Sokoto red goats using abattoir specimens.

Ovarian activity of Sokoto red goats was studied for 12 months using 141 pairs of ovaries obtained from a Zaria abattoir. Ovarian activity occurred throughout the year but higher activity was observed during the rainy (June to September) and dry (January to March) seasons. The higher ovarian activity during the rainy season is perhaps due to the availability of pasture during this time, while the higher activity during the dry season might be related to the goat's ability to convert leaves and dry forage that are mostly available during this season into useful nutrients. Temperature increase, particularly during the dry season, might be a factor for higher ovarian activity during the same period.

A retrospective survey of liver fluke disease in livestock based on abattoir data in Shiraz, south of Iran.

Meat-inspection records in an abattoir located in the Fars province (southern part of Iran) from 20 March 1999 to 19 March 2004 were used to determine the prevalence and long-term trend of liver fluke disease in sheep, cattle and goats in the region. A total of 844,039 animals (cattle 131,716; sheep 577,090; goats 135,233) slaughtered in the 5-year period and overall 34,856 (4.1%) livers were condemned. Fasciolosis and dicrocoeliosis were responsible for 54 and 21% of total liver condemnations, respectively. The prevalence of liver condemnations due to fasciolosis was decreased from 3.89, 3.20 and 2.63% in 1999-2000 to 1.07, 0.59 and 0.24% in 2003-2004 for cattle, sheep and goats, respectively. The corresponding features for dicrocoeliosis were similar, declining from 1.47, 1.76 and 2.10% in 1999-2000 to 0.69, 0.34 and 0.25% in 2003-2004, respectively. Drought climatic conditions in conjunction with a greater awareness among farmers could be responsible factors.

The first dromedary (Camelus dromedarius) offspring obtained from in vitro matured, in vitro fertilized and in vitro cultured abattoir-derived oocytes.

Dromedary offspring have never been produced fully in vitro. We have previously demonstrated that embryos obtained by culture in semi-defined medium (mKSOMaa) have better in vitro development ability than those cultured with oviductal epithelial cells. The aim of the present experiment was to study the pregnancy rate after embryo transfer of in vitro-produced (IVP) dromedary embryos cultured in semi-defined modified medium (mKSOMaa). IVM/IVF procedures were conducted on six hundred and sixty four (664) cumulus oocytes complexes (COCs) aspirated from ovaries collected at a local slaughterhouse and cultured in vitro (38.5 degrees C; 5% CO2, and maximum humidity >95%). Maturation was completed by incubation in TCM-199 medium supplemented with 10% heat-treated Fetal Calf Serum (FCS), 10 ng/mL EGF, 1 microg/mL FSH, 1 microg/mL E2 and 500 microM cysteamine for 30 h. In vitro fertilization was performed using fresh semen (0.5 x 10(6) spermatozoa/mL in modified TALP-solution). Fertilized oocytes were cultured in mKSOMaa, under 38.5 degrees C, 5% CO2 and 90% N2 with maximum humidity (>95%). All IVC steps were done in seven replicates. The cleavage rate (two cells to blastocyst stage) was 64% (425/664) and the percentage of oocytes reaching the blastocyst stage was 23% (155/664). The hatching rate of blastocyst obtained after culture was 46% (71/155). Good quality hatched blastocysts (n = 66) were transferred individually to synchronized recipients. Pregnancy rates, determined by ultrasonography at 15, 60 and 90 days after embryo transfer (ET), were 38%, 32% and 27%, respectively. Out of 18 pregnant females 5 aborted between the fifth and seventh month of pregnancy and 13 females (20%) remained pregnant. After 385 days of pregnancy, the first healthy and normal male-dromedary offspring produced fully in vitro was born at a birth weight of 38 kg. More dromedary calves (n = 4) were born later on. The remaining pregnant females (n = 8) are due to calf within the next months. In conclusion, this is the first reported offspring in camelids obtained by transfer of embryos produced by IVM, IVF and IVC using abattoir-derived oocytes, fresh semen and culture in a semi-defined medium.

A retrospective survey of hydatidosis in livestock in Shiraz, Iran, based on abattoir data during 1999-2004.

Meat inspection records in an abattoir located in Shiraz, a city in southwest Iran and the capital of Fars province, during a 5-year period from 20 March 1999 to 19 March 2004 were used to determine the prevalence of hydatidosis in sheep, cattle, and goats in the region. A total of 844,039 animals (cattle 131,716; sheep 577,090; goats 135,233) slaughtered in the 5-year period and overall 34,856 (4.1%) livers and 123,402 (14.62%) lungs were condemned. Hydatidosis was responsible for 28.7 and 15.4% of total livers and lungs condemnations, respectively. The overall trend for all livestock and in both organs was a significant downward one. The annual prevalence of liver condemnations due to hydatidosis was decreased from 2.1, 1.8, and 1.0% in 1999-2000 to 0.62, 0.33, and 0.20% in 2003-2004 for cattle, sheep, and goats, respectively. The corresponding features for lung condemnation due to hydatidosis were relatively higher than liver, declining from 3.0, 4.6, and 4.4% in 1999-2000 to 1.3, 1.5, and 0.56% in 2003-2004, for cattle, sheep, and goats, respectively. Greater awareness among farmers, destruction of organs containing hydatid cysts, prevention of access of dogs to raw offals and implementation of national rabies control program could be responsible factors. Data showed significant seasonal pattern for hydatidosis in all species. Liver condemnations due to hydatidosis were higher in the spring and summer for sheep, whereas lung condemnations were higher in summer for both sheep and goats. Liver and lung condemnations in cattle were higher in winter. This could be attributed to various factors such as sources of slaughtered animals, changes in management practice and ecological factors. The overall trend was relatively the same when annual condemnations were adjusted for the effect of seasonal variation. The present survey provides baseline data for the future monitoring of this potentially important parasitic disease in the region.

An abattoir survey of ovine reproductive tracts in Ireland.

Reproductive tracts were collected from 870 ewes slaughtered at an abattoir in County Dublin over a 9-m.o. period from September 1993 to June 1994. Ovarian activity was evident in 59.3% of the tracts examined. The mean ovulation rate was 1.26 +/- 0.045 (mean +/- SEM). The spatial relationship between corpora lutea (CL) and dominant follicles was established. Ten percent of the ewes examined were pregnant. Embryonic transuterine migration was observed in 12% of the single ovulating ewes and in all ewes pregnant with twins which had double ovulations on one ovary. Based on the observation of tracts with contemporaneous double ovulations and a single fetus, the prevalence of embryonic loss was 17.2%. Overall, 9.4% of the tracts showed evidence of pathological change, and 5.5% of the tracts had abnormalities likely to impair fertility.
