It is demonstrated that it is possible to change the stereotyped reaction of the steroid metabolism to infection by means of external influences. The progress of infectious diseases can be detoriated and the average duration of life can be shortened by rearing a special strain of test rabbits or by lack of protein in the diet, by blocking the RES, by cortisol, estradiol and thyroxin, by glucose and by polyvinylpyridin-N-oxid. - The time of survival is prolonged by testosterone, dehydroepiandrosterone and cyproterone, also by cystein, aristolochia acid and treatment with pyrifer. - No effect whatever on the progress of an infectious disease is produced by the vitamines A, B1, B6, D, E and especially ascorbinic acid, also an extract of thymus gland, spleen, insulin, a preparation with STH, and Norgestrel, DMSO and treatment with B, bifidum and with omnadin.

The concentration of the fractions of corticosteroids, aldosterone, catecholamines, and cyclic nucleotides (cAMP and cGMP) in blood of the adrenal veins and the activity of renin in blood of the renal veins were studied in 22 patients with stages IIA and IIB hypertensive disease. At the same time the content of these substances in the peripheral blood was determined and compared with the level of steroid and catecholamine excretion in the daily urine. An increase in the content of free 11 OCS and F fractions in the peripheral blood and blood of the adrenal veins was revealed in all patients examined.
Antepartum pituitary infarction occurs only in insulin-dependent diabetic patients. It is manifested by severe headache, followed by decreasing insulin requirements. Delivery is frequently premature, with high fetal wastage and increased maternal mortality. During the puerperium, the first manifestation of pituitary deficiency, other than a lower insulin requirement than would be expected, is failure to lactate. Subsequent evaluation of pituitary function reveals variable deficiencies with loss of growth hormone and gonadotropins being most frequent. This case is the eighth report of this entity, and it represents the first patient to survive a pituitary infarction prior to the third trimester of pregnancy. Recognition of this syndrome is critical in order to ensure that the mother's health and the viability of the offspring be preserved.

The authors determined the level of neuraminic acid in the serum of 50 patients with encephalomalacia and 25 patients with cerebral haemorrhages on the 1st, 3d and 7th days of the disease. Twenty healthy subjects served as controls. A statistically significant rise in the concentration of this substance was observed in both groups of patients throughout the whole period of observations.
Chronic investigations (up to 3 years) conducted in dogs have evidenced that periodic disturbances of vascular permeability produced by using dicoumarin with a long-term blocking of the thyroid function greatly aggravate pathological manifestations induced by the action of 6-methylthiouracil. They result in the development in the animals of endogenous hypercholesterinemia, elevated content in the blood of beta-lipoproteins and in a periodic rise of the arterial pressure. These changes were particularly spectacular at the final stage of the experiment in animals with marked manifestations of atherosclerosis and were accompanied by reduced stand-by potentialities of the adrenal gland, disruption of metabolic processes in the myocardium along with the slowed down resorption of NaI131 from the heart muscle. The sensitivity of the heart to adrenalin was down too.

Tablets containing 2 mg cyproterone acetate and 0.05 mg ethinyl estradiol in a calendar package of 21 days were used as an oral contraceptive to treat acne. The series comprised 20 patients. The women were 18--43 years of age, and all had acne which had previously been resistant to therapy. The treatment was continued for 6 months. Serum testosterone, 17-OHCS, 17-KS, serum ALAT and gamma-GT were recorded prior to the treatment at 3 and 6 months. Ten patients responded well to the treatment, 5 responded moderately well, 3 experienced no change, and 2 became worse. The serum testosterone level fell during the therapy and the ALAT level rose, though only one pathological ALAT value was recorded.
