[Effect of chronic pyrogenal stress on the mitotic regime and quantity of DNA-synthesizing cells in the epithelium of the cornea and tongue of white rats].

The effect of prolonged stress on mitotic regimen and the number of DNA-synthesizing cells in the corneal and tongue epithelium was studied on a model of pyrogenal stress. A five-day pyrogenal administration led to a 1.7-fold reduction of te number of mitoses in the corneal and tongue epithelium. Reduction in number of dividing cells was not associated with the change in the rate of mitosis. The percentage of pathological mitoses in the corneal epithelium of intact rats was 6.1, and it failed to change in stress. In control rats the labeled nuclei index in the corneal and tongue epithelium constituted 12.6 and 10.8. It was similar with the corresponding indices in experimental animals (12.2 and 12.2).

[Mechanisms of the immunodepression caused by ortho-aminoazotoluene and its noncarcinogenic analog in mice].

Single injections of ortho-aminoazotoluene (OAT) or aminoazobenzene (AB) decrease the immune response of DD mice to the strain-nonspecific Krebs-2 tumor. The immunosuppressive action of AB is due to its toxicity for lymphoid cells, whereas the OAT effect is mediated by adrenal glands. After OAT injection,II-oxycorticosteroids level is elevated although their production by adrenal glands is not increased. The accumulation of glucocorticoids in blood after OAT injection is assumed to be the result of a decreased hormone utilization because of the blockade of receptor proteins or metabolizing enzymes in liver cells by a carcinogen.

[Migration of hematopoietic stem cells in thermal burns].

Experiments on mice (CBA X C57BL) F1 have shown that a high level of endogenous glucocorticoids in the blood 30 min to 6 hours after burn is accompanied by a 2--2 1/2-fold decrease of the circulating CFU. At this period CFU migration from the bone marrow area shielded during the irradiation (850 R) is inhibited. The stem cells migration is increased 3--4 days after the burn.

[Seasonal changes of corticosteroid content in practically healthy young persons under condition of monsoon climate of Khabarovsk].

In 195 apparently healthy young men, residents of Khabarovsk, a study was made of the contents of the sum total 11-OCS, corticosteroids--free and protein-bound, cortizol and corticosterone in the blood plasma, and 17-OCS in the urine, depending on the season of the year, climatic and weather factors. Seasonal changes of glucocorticoid function of the adrenal cortex with the maximal plasma hormone level during winter and their greatest urinary excretion during summer were found. An increase of free (biologically-active) corticosteroid fraction was recorded during bad weather at all the seasons.

[Biogenic amines and adrenal cortical function in breast cancer].

Under study were the content of serotonin and 11-OCS in blood and diurnal excretion of 5-OIAA, adrenaline and noradrenaline in 71 pateints with breast cancer. The data obtained indicated that the examined patients, compared with the control group, show a reliably higher concentration of serotonin and 11-OCS in blood (70.4% and 19.5% correspondingly), an insignificantly increased excretion of 5-OIAA, a markedly increased diurnal excretion of adrenaline (by 96.4%), whereas a decreased excretion of noradrenaline (by 73.1%). The character of changes in the indices under study was definitely dependent on the stage of the disease (in stages 1-11 these changes were mostly pronounced), and patients' age (in young patients the adrenal cortex activity was rather intensive, whereas in aged patients biologically active substances were manifest).

[Glucocorticosteroid, catecholamine and protein-bound iodine (PBI) plasma levels in swine following electrocutaneous stimulation].

Application of electrocutaneous stimuli for short-time excitation of swine, accompanied by high locomotor activity, led in animals weighing between 30 kg and 45 kg to steep rises of catecholamine and glucocorticosteroid plasma concentrations, while little change was recordable from protein-linked iodine. Increase in plasma glucose and RQ in animals with higher rises in plasma-borne catecholamines and glucocorticoids was higher than that in animals with lower catecholamine deflection. Both the results reported in this paper and findings obtained from other studies into swine are likely to suggest major involvement of the sympathico-adrenomedullary system in the buildup of transport stress. Interdependence was found to exist between the intensity of the adrenergic reaction, on the one hand, and rises in plasma glucose and RQ as well as drop of pH, on the other. Those findings from various tests seem to support the conclusion that under conditions of severe excitation and high locomotor activity the differentiated resistance of swine to stress is atributable to different intensities of sympathico-adrenergic reaction of the animal concerned.

[The clinical effect of antibiotics in the macrolide family on bronchial asthma. Non-antimicrobial actions of oleandomycin [author's transl)].

Non-antimicrobial actions of oleandomycin (triacetyloleandomycin and oleandomycin phosphate) were studied in patients with bronchial asthma. Twenty-one cases of the disease without associating infections entered the study, and they were given 750mg of oleandomycin or triacetryloleandomycin in three divided doses daily for two weeks. Clinical manifestations and laboratory findings were compared to assess the effectiveness of the antibiotic therapy between the three 2-week periods before, during and after the therapy. Improvements in clinical manifestations were attained in 11 of 21 cases (52.3%), and last after discontinuance of the therapy in 8(38.1%). The blood level of 11-OHCS as determined by the Demoorr's fluorescence method increased by greater than 20% at the end of thearpy in 7 of 18 cases (38.9%). In 5 of the 7 cases favorable responses were seen clinically to the oleandomycin therapy. The serum IgE level determined by the radioimmunosorbent test was compared before and after the therapy to reveal that oleandomycin caused decrease of IgE in 10 and increase in 9 of 20 cases examined. The oleandomycin therapy resulted increases by greater than 20% of the vital capacity and FEV 1.0 in 2 and 3, respectively, of 15 cases. Jaundice in association with elevations of the GOT, GPT and alkaline phosphatase developed in one patient, and generalized skin eruption in another. Both of these cases were given triacetyloleandomycin.

[Effect of the preliminary action of angiotensin on the sensitivity of the adrenal cortex of dogs to this peptide].

Experiments on dogs demonstrated that an increase of aldosterone secretion depended not only on the angiotensin II level in the blood, but also on the character of the changes in the peptide concentration: reaction of the glomerular zone of the adrenal cortex to this octapeptide increased after a preliminary angiotensin stimulation of the adrenal glands. The effect revealed was independent of the sum total dose of the preparation administered and was not accompanied by any increase in the glucocorticosteroid level in the plasma. This effect permitted the renin-aldosterone system to change under definite conditions to increased functional level without any marked rise of renin secretion and angiotensin II formation.
