Hemodynamic comparison of microsurgical closures for longitudinal arteriotomies.

Twenty-four femoral arteries in 12 rats were used to compare longitudinal and transverse closures in blood vessels approximately 1 mm in diameter. The closure techniques were applied to a simple longitudinal slit, 1 mm long, and to a longitudinal defect, 0.5 mm wide and 1 mm long. Comparisons were made of the change in pre- and postrepair flow velocities, recorded every 5 min using a 20-MHz pulsed Doppler velocimeter. Maximum reductions in flow velocity (linearly related to volume flow) were 10% and 29% for the longitudinal and transverse repairs, respectively, when applied to the longitudinal slit, and 65% and 19%, respectively, when applied to the larger arteriotomy. An analysis of variance indicates that the differences in the normalization of flow velocities during the immediate postrepair period are significant (P < 0.05). We conclude that optimal flow normalization is achieved by applying the longitudinal repair to the simple slit and the transverse repair to the larger arteriotomy.

Effect of histamine on the longitudinal and circular muscle of the oestrogen dominated rat uterus.

The response of the longitudinal and circular myometrial strips to histamine was studied in oestrogen-treated rats. Histamine produced a dose-related inhibitory response in KCl-contracted longitudinal and circular uterine strips. Histamine was equipotent in producing the relaxant response but the maximal effect achieved in the longitudinal muscle was higher than the circular one. Ranitidine antagonized the histamine-induced relaxation with a similar dose ratio in both longitudinal and circular strips. Clemizole and reserpine treatment did not produce any modification of the dose-response curve to histamine. In the longitudinal and circular strips which were not preconstricted by KCl, neither histamine nor 2-pyridylethylamine, even in strips pretreated with ranitidine, produced any effect when added to the organ bath. Our results show that the response of histamine in both longitudinal and circular uterine layers of the oestrogen-treated rats are mediated exclusively by histamine H2-receptors.

Visual perceptions of vertical and intrinsic longitudinal axes.

The purpose of these experiments was to investigate whether visual perceptions of the earth-fixed vertical axis are more accurate than those of intrinsic body-fixed axes. In one experiment, nine neurologically normal young adult subjects' abilities to position a luminescent rod vertically or parallel to the longitudinal axis of the head or trunk were studied in four conditions: (1) earth-fixed--subjects stood erect with the head aligned to the trunk and visually aligned a hand-held rod to vertical; (2) earth--subjects aligned the rod to vertical as in 1, but the orientations of the head and trunk were varied in the sagittal and frontal planes on each trial; (3) head--frontal and/or sagittal plane orientation of the subject's head was varied on each trial and the rod was aligned parallel to the longitudinal axis of the head; (4) trunk--frontal and/or sagittal plane orientation of the subject's trunk was varied on each trial and the rod was aligned parallel to the longitudinal axis of the trunk. Note that in conditions 2, 3, and 4 the head and trunk were never aligned with each other. Also, each condition was carried out in normal light and in complete darkness. Perceptual errors were measured in both the frontal and the sagittal planes. The results showed that the variable errors were significantly lower when subjects aligned the rod to vertical rather than to the longitudinal axis of the head or trunk. Also, errors were similar in size in the two planes and were unaffected by vision of the surrounding environment. In a second experiment, subjects were seated and controlled the position of a luminescent rod held by a robot. They aligned the rod either to the longitudinal axis of their head or to the vertical in complete darkness, under three conditions similar to those described above: (1) earth-fixed, (2) earth, and (3) head. There was no possibility of use of kinesthetic information for controlling rod position in this experiment as in the first experiment. The results were similar to those of the first experiment, as subjects aligned the rod more accurately to vertical than to the longitudinal axis of the head. These results show convincingly that visual perceptions of earth-fixed vertical are more accurate than perceptions of intrinsic axes fixed to the head or trunk.

Macroinvertebrate Community Structure Along the Longitudinal Gradient of an Agriculturally Impacted Stream

/ Lapwai Creek, an agriculturally impacted stream in northern Idaho, was sampled seasonally over a two-year period to determine if macroinvertebrate community composition changed along the longitudinal gradient and if changes followed predictions of the river continuum concept. Possible relationships between changes in food resource availability and community structure were also examined. Benthic invertebrates were collected at eight locations along the longitudinal gradient of Lapwai Creek using a Hess sampler. Random skewer analysis suggested there was no longitudinal gradient for either number of individuals or functional feeding group composition. Cluster analysis revealed that all locations, excluding a site receiving outflow from a small, eutrophic reservoir, had a similar community structure, further suggesting that invertebrate community composition remained consistent along the longitudinal gradient of the stream. The community was dominated at all sites, excluding the site below the reservoir, by functionalgrazers. Shredders were rare throughout Lapwai Creek, even in areas where healthy riparian vegetation still remained. Studies of other streams within the drainage basin show that many species found in the upper reaches of these streams, where agricultural impacts are low, were absent throughout the length of Lapwai Creek. Data collected concurrently with macroinvertebrates indicated that the input, storage, and transport of particulate organic matter was low throughout the stream, whereas periphyton abundance was high. The absence of longitudinal changes, despite flowing through three distinct geomorphological regions, and the grouping of all sites except one by cluster analysis for both dominant taxa and functional feeding groups suggest that agricultural alteration has influenced community structure of Lapwai Creek, resulting in a relatively homogeneous assemblage of macroinvertebrates capable of tolerating agricultural nonpoint source pollution. Additional support for this hypothesis is the high abundance of one food source, periphyton, and the small quantities of terrestrially derived organic matter. The abundance of the former and the rarity of the latter can be attributed to alteration of the drainage basin resulting from agricultural activities through inputs of fertilizers that generated high nutrient concentrations and the removal of riparian vegetation to clear more land for agriculture and provide increase access to the stream.KEY WORDS: Agriculture; Longitudinal patterns; Macroinvertebrates; Nonpoint source; River continuum

Interstitial cells of Cajal: mediators of communication between circular and longitudinal muscle layers of canine colon.

The network of interstitial cells of Cajal associated with Auerbach's (myenteric) plexus in the canine colon was investigated to determine its role in facilitating communication between circular and longitudinal muscle layers. Electrical coupling between the muscle layers was demonstrated by propagating extracellularly evoked electrotonic pulses from circular muscle cells to nearby longitudinal muscle cells. The likelihood of cytoplasmic continuity across Auerbach's plexus was further demonstrated by the ability of neurobiotin to spread between the interstitial cells and the circular and longitudinal muscle cells. Importantly, direct neurobiotin spread between circular and longitudinal muscle cells was not observed even when they were in close proximity as determined by confocal microscopy. When neurobiotin did spread across the two muscle layers, the intervening interstitial cells were always neurobiotin-positive. In regions where circular and longitudinal muscle cells approach each other closely, electron microscopy revealed the presence of close appositions between interstitial cells and smooth muscle cells. Gap junctions between interstitial cells and smooth muscle cells of both layers, as judged by electron microscopy, were extremely rare. Neither gap junctions nor close appositions were observed between longitudinal and circular muscle cells. The special arrangement for electrotonic coupling across Auerbach's plexus through interstitial cells of Cajal suggests controlled coupling between the two muscle layers, explaining the preservation of their distinct electrical activities.

Limitations of three-dimensional intraductal ultrasonography in the assessment of longitudinal spread of extrahepatic bile duct carcinoma.

We investigated the utility and limitations of three-dimensional intraductal ultrasonography (3D-IDUS), for the assessment of the extent of longitudinal cancer spread to the hepatic side by extrahepatic bile duct carcinoma. In eight patients with extrahepatic bile duct carcinoma. 3D-IDUS was used to assess longitudinal cancer extension to the hepatic side prior to resection. When the linear dimension of 3D-IDUS showed bile duct wall thickening that was connected to the tumor and which became thin at a point, it was determined to be the front formation of longitudinal cancer extension. The findings were examined in relation to histologic information from the resected specimen. Although 3D-IDUS showed front formation of wall thickening in two patients, it accurately reflected the histological margin of the longitudinal cancer extension in only one patient. In the other patient, the wall thickening was longer than the histological margin. When 3D-IDUS showed bile duct wall thickening without front formation (n = 2), the wall thickening was longer than the histological margin of the longitudinal cancer extension. Even when 3D-IDUS did not show wall thickening (n = 4), one of these patients showed cancer spread histologically. As a result, the accuracy in assessing longitudinal cancer extension by 3D-IDUS was only 50%. Even if the linear dimension of 3D-IDUS demonstrated front formation of thickening of the bile duct, it reflected not only cancer extension but also inflammatory wall thickening.

Preparation and characterization of longitudinal tubules of sarcoplasmic reticulum from fast skeletal muscle.

Sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) serves a central role in calcium uptake and release, thereby regulating muscle relaxation and contraction, respectively. Recently, we have isolated fractions referable to longitudinal tubules (R2) and terminal cisternae (R4), the two major types of sarcoplasmic reticulum (A. Saito et al. (1984) J. Cell Biol. 99, 875-885). The terminal cisternae contain two types of membranes, the calcium pump membrane and the junctional face membrane. The terminal cisternae are filled with electron-opaque contents which serve as a Ca2+ reservoir. The longitudinal tubules consist mainly of the calcium pump membrane. In this study, we describe a new longitudinal tubule fraction (F2) and characterize it together with the R2 and R4 SR fractions. The calcium pump membrane of the longitudinal tubules is a highly specialized membrane consisting of about 90% calcium pump protein as determined by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Extensive changes in morphology can be observed in the SR fractions referable to osmotic differences during the fixation conditions using either glutaraldehyde-tannic acid or osmium tetroxide fixatives. The changes include swelling or shrinkage and aggregation of the compartmental contents when the fixative contains calcium ions. The two types of SR have different osmotic permeability to the same medium, as indicated by differential swelling or shrinkage. Both longitudinal tubule and terminal cisternae vesicles of SR appear larger and are spherical vesicles when the glutaraldehyde-tannic acid fixative is isotonic as compared with the "standard" fixation method. We have previously reported that the ruthenium red-sensitive calcium release channels are localized to the terminal cisternae. The terminal cisternae as isolated are leaky to Ca2+ since these channels are in the "open state" (S. Fleischer et al. (1985) Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci USA 82, 7256-7259). Thus, the Ca2+, Mg2+-dependent ATPase (Ca2+ ATPase) rate is only slightly enhanced in the presence of a Ca2+ ionophore, which dissipates the Ca2+ gradient across the SR membrane. We now find that preincubation with ruthenium red restores the tight coupling of the Ca2+ ATPase activity to Ca2+ transport. That is to say, ATPase activity is reduced and the addition of ionophore stimulates the Ca2+ ATPase activity 4- to 7-fold. The Ca2+ ATPase activity in longitudinal tubules is already tightly coupled. It is minimal after a Ca2+ gradient has been generated, but can be stimulated 9- to 20-fold when the Ca2+ gradient is dissipated with ionophore. This finding suggests that the Ca2+ ATPase activity in SR is tightly coupled to Ca2+ transport in situ.

Obstetrics and gynecology medical student outcomes: longitudinal multispecialty clerkship versus traditional block rotations.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate outcomes of students in a longitudinal clerkship. STUDY DESIGN: Clerkship grades, written examination scores, and clinical evaluations were compared between students participating in a longitudinal clerkship and students in block rotations. The percent of students pursuing an obstetrics and gynecology residency from each group was evaluated. RESULTS: There was no difference in clerkship grade (3.3 versus 3.5, P = .158). Longitudinal and block students received similar clinical evaluations with no significant difference in any category. The average written examination score was lower for students in the longitudinal clerkship (76.9% versus 80.0%, P = .008). A higher percent of students in the longitudinal program chose an obstetrics and gynecology residency, 12.5% versus 6.17% (odds ratio = 2.17, 95% confidence interval 0.57-6.89, P = .18). CONCLUSIONS: Longitudinally trained students received similar clinical evaluations to their colleagues but may need assistance in acquiring the knowledge needed for the written examination. This program should be examined closely for factors influencing a higher percent of students to pursue a residency in obstetrics and gynecology.

Photo-oxidation of diglycine in confined media Relaxation of longitudinal magnetization in spin correlated radical pairs.

Time-resolved electron paramagnetic resonance spectra (X-band) of correlated radical pairs created in AOT reverse micelles are presented and simulated using the microreactor model. They are discussed in terms of the two-site model with a particular emphasis on longitudinal relaxation mechanisms. The geminate radical pair is created by photo-oxidation of dyglicine by the excited triplet states of an anthraquinone salt. The strong chemically induced electron spin polarization observed is due to three mechanisms: TM, RPM, and SCRPM. Relative contributions from these mechanisms depend on the water pool volume and the time of observation. There are three types of longitudinal relaxation in radical pairs. The first is relaxation of the RPM induced longitudinal magnetization in spin correlated radical pairs. The second is the longitudinal relaxation in radical pairs which are not correlated (with a zero value of the double quantum coherence). In such pairs, the generation of longitudinal magnetization due to RPM is impossible, and the spin-selective recombination of the pairs is ineffective. Under all experimental conditions, the first type of relaxation is slower than the second type. For both, the physical mechanism leading to relaxation is modulation of the Heisenberg electron spin exchange interaction. This is an internal relaxation process. The third relaxation type occurs in radical pairs due to ordinary longitudinal relaxation in non-interacting radicals. Normally, relaxation of the third type is the slowest of the three. This explains time and micelle size dependence of the relative contribution of RPM into TREPR spectra. It seems reasonable to suggest that the creation of the initial spin state populations is partially adiabatic.

Longitudinal mixing in meandering channels: new experimental data set and verification of a predictive technique.

Evaluation of longitudinal mixing processes in open channel flows is important in environmental management, requiring the quantification of mixing coefficients. Estimates of these coefficients sufficiently accurate for environmental impact assessments cannot be achieved using current theoretical or semi-empirical methods for natural channels. This inaccuracy is caused by a limited understanding and quantification of the interaction of the dominant mechanisms resulting from natural channel features, such as plan form curvature and changes in cross-sectional shape. Experimental results are presented here from studies conducted in three self-formed channels, developed by known discharges. Longitudinal mixing was investigated at various flow rates within each of the channels by monitoring the development of tracer plumes during transit through the channels. Using an optimisation procedure, coefficients required for solution of the one-dimensional advection dispersion equation (1D-ADE) were found in the range 0.02-0.2m(2)/s. The coefficients were found to vary as functions of longitudinal meander location, channel form and discharge. Predictions of these longitudinal mixing coefficients were made using a mathematical technique requiring only channel form properties and flow rate as inputs. Predicted values were typically within 20% of the measured values, although deviation of up to 50% was found for the lowest discharge in each channel. This large error is likely to have been caused by increased dead zone effects associated with channel bathymetry at low discharges that are not captured by the method. The method was shown to be capable of capturing the variation in the longitudinal mixing coefficient with longitudinal meander location, with channel form and with discharge.

Proton longitudinal relaxation investigation of histidyl residues in human normal adult hemoglobin.

The longitudinal relaxation of the C2 protons of surface histidyl residues as well as other aromatic protons of human normal adult deoxyhemoglobin investigated at 360 MHz is discussed in terms of the theory proposed by Kalk and Berendsen for the proton longitudinal relaxation in proteins (Kalk, A., and H.J.C. Berendsen. 1976. J. Magn. Reson. 24:343-366). The role of the four paramagnetic iron atoms of deoxyhemoglobin as fast-relaxing sinks for the overall proton longitudinal relaxation is evaluated according to the model proposed by Bloembergen for the relaxation of nuclei in crystals containing paramagnetic centers (Bloembergen, N. 1949. Physica. 15:386-426). The results suggest that the effectiveness of the paramagnetic iron atoms of deoxyhemoglobin for the overall proton longitudinal relaxation is reduced as a result of slower spin diffusion and wide distribution of methyl groups within the hemoglobin molecule. Thus, deoxyhemoglobin provides a good model for investigating the influence of cross relaxation on proton longitudinal relaxation in proteins at the slow motion limit and in the presence of paramagnetic centers. For the C2 protons of surface histidyl residues, we show that the cross relaxation resulting from the interresidue dipolar interaction makes an important contribution to their longitudinal relaxation.

Functional characterization of alpha1-adrenoceptor subtypes in longitudinal and circular muscle of human vas deferens.

The alpha1-adrenoceptor subtype(s) mediating contraction to noradrenaline in longitudinal and circular muscle of human epididymal vas deferens was studied using competitive antagonists. The effects of the alkylating agents, phenoxybenzamine and chloroethylclonidine were also investigated. Noradrenaline evoked concentration-dependent contractions of longitudinal and circular muscle with comparable potencies (pD2; 5.6 and 5.5 respectively). The contractions in longitudinal and circular muscle respectively were inhibited by prazosin (pA2, 8.6 and pKB, 9.2), 5-methylurapidil (pKB, 8.7 and 9.1) and less potently by spiperone (pA2, 7.1) or BMY 7378 (pKB, 6.3 and 6.6). Contractions of the circular but not longitudinal muscle was comparatively insensitive to pretreatment with phenoxybenzamine. In contrast pretreatment with chloroethylclonidine reduced the contractions in both muscle types and also enhanced phenoxybenzamine-sensitivity in longitudinal but not circular muscle. The results suggest that contractions evoked by noradrenaline in both muscle types of human vas deferens is mediated via activation of alpha1-adrenoceptors with pharmacological profile of the alpha1A-subtype. However the involvement of alpha1A-adrenoceptor variants, such as the hypothesised alpha1L-subtype may underlie the differential effects of phenoxybenzamine in longitudinal and circular muscle. Factors contributing to chloroethylclonidine-sensitivity are discussed.

Evidence that histamine homologues discriminate between H3-receptors in guinea-pig cerebral cortex and ileum longitudinal muscle myenteric plexus.

1. The binding of the selective histamine H3-receptor agonist ([3H]-R-alpha-methylhistamine) to sites in guinea-pig cerebral cortex and ileum longitudinal muscle myenteric plexus has been characterized and a comparison made of the apparent affinities of a series of H3-receptor ligands. 2. Saturation analysis suggested that [3H]-R-alpha-methylhistamine labelled a homogeneous population of histamine H3-receptors in guinea-pig cerebral cortex (pKD=9.91+/-0. 07; nH=1.07+/-0.03; n=5) and ileum longitudinal muscle myenteric plexus (pKD=9.75+/-0.21; nH=0.97+/-0.02; n=5). There was no significant difference in the estimated affinity of [3H]-R-alpha-methylhistamine in the two tissues. The cerebral cortex had a significantly higher receptor density (3.91+/-0.37 fmol mg-1 tissue) than the ileum longitudinal muscle myenteric plexus (0. 39+/-0.11 fmol mg-1). 3. Overall, the apparent affinities of compounds, classified as H3-receptor ligands, in cerebral cortex and ileum longitudinal muscle myenteric plexus were well correlated (r=0. 91, P<0.0001) and consistent with the cerebral cortex and ileum longitudinal muscle myenteric plexus expressing histamine H3-receptor population(s) that are pharmacologically indistinguishable by the majority of histamine H3-receptor ligands. However, it was evident that the homologues of histamine within this group of compounds could discriminate between the receptor populations in the two tissues. Thus, the estimated affinity of five imidazole unbranched alkylamines (histamine, homohistamine, VUF4701, VUF4732 and impentamine) were significantly higher in the guinea-pig cerebral cortex than in the ileum longitudinal muscle myenteric plexus assay.

Development of a fully quantitative approach to the interpretation of stress echocardiography using radial and longitudinal myocardial velocities.

BACKGROUND: Tissue Doppler may be used to quantify regional left ventricular function but is limited by segmental variation of longitudinal velocity from base to apex and free to septal walls. We sought to overcome this by developing a composite of longitudinal and radial velocities. METHODS AND RESULTS: We examined 82 unselected patients undergoing a standard dobutamine echocardiogram. Longitudinal velocity was obtained in the basal and mid segments of each wall using tissue Doppler in the apical views. Radial velocities were derived in the same segments using an automated border detection system and centerline method with regional chords grouped according to segment location and temporally averaged. In 25 patients at low probability of coronary disease, the pattern of regional variation in longitudinal velocity (higher in the septum) was the opposite of radial velocity (higher in the free wall) and the combination was homogeneous. In 57 patients undergoing angiography, velocity in abnormal segments was less than normal segments using longitudinal (6.0 +/- 3.6 vs 9.0 +/- 2.2 cm/s, P =.01) and radial velocity (6.0 +/- 4.0 vs 8.0 +/- 3.9 cm/s, P =.02). However, the composite velocity permitted better separation of abnormal and normal segments (13.3 +/- 5.6 vs 17.5 +/- 4.2 cm/s, P =.001). There was no significant difference between the accuracy of this quantitative approach and expert visual wall motion analysis (81% vs 84%, P =.56). CONCLUSION: Regional variation of uni-dimensional myocardial velocities necessitates site-specific normal ranges, probably because of different fiber directions. Combined analysis of longitudinal and radial velocities allows the derivation of a composite velocity, which is homogeneous in all segments and may allow better separation of normal and abnormal myocardium.

Sonographic detection of longitudinal ulcers in Crohn disease.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to investigate the characteristic sonographic features, such as focal disappearance of the wall stratification sign (FD sign), of longitudinal ulcers in patients with Crohn disease (CD). METHODS: A total of 545 sonographic examinations of patients with Crohn disease (n = 166), ulcerative colitis (n = 196), bacterial colitis (n = 78), ischemic colitis (n = 63), pseudomembranous colitis (n = 32), Behçet's disease (n = 7), and collagenous colitis (n = 3) were extracted. The sonographic findings were compared with those of a barium contrast study, colonoscopy, and resected specimens. In transverse views of the bowel segment, wall stratification was investigated. The FD sign was defined as the disappearance of the layered structure observed in a single portion of the bowel circumference. Prevalence of the FD sign was investigated for each disease. RESULTS: Eighty lesions (76 CD, 1 ulcerative colitis, 2 ischemic colitis, 1 Behçet's disease) with active single longitudinal ulcers were detected by barium contrast study and endoscopy. Among them, the FD sign was detected by ultrasonography (US) in 73 lesions (91.3%). No lesions with the FD sign were found by US without radiological or endoscopic findings of longitudinal ulcers. An in vitro study (water-immersion method) of resected specimens revealed that the FD sign reflected the focal destruction of wall stratification caused by the deep longitudinal ulceration. CONCLUSIONS: Ultrasonographic findings of FD sign are correlated with the existence of deep longitudinal ulcers, which are most frequently found in CD. US is a useful diagnostic modality for detecting longitudinal ulcers in patients with CD.

Effects of ovulation on the conduction and contraction velocities in rabbit oviduct: contrasts between longitudinal and circular muscle.

The contraction and electrical conduction velocity of the longitudinal and circular muscle of the oviduct from rabbits in estrus, 24 or 72 h following administration of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) or 14 days following castration have been compared. Two populations of conduction and contraction velocities were identified, with the faster velocity being associated with the longitudinal muscle. There was a large overlap between longitudinal and circular contraction, suggesting complex relationships between longitudinal and circular muscle. From the results it appears that during ovum transport the circular velocities increased, with the slowest rates at estrus. The values obtained 72 h following hCG injection most closely resembled those in the castrate group of animals. In the longitudinal orientation, however, the velocities were greater 24 h following hCG injection than at estrus or 72 h following hCG injection, suggesting a complex relationship between both longitudinal and circular muscle of the oviduct following ovulation.

Genetic study of ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament in the cervical spine with human leukocyte antigen haplotype.

To evaluate the genetic background of ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament, the relationship between the presence of absence of ossification and human leukocyte antigen haplotypes was studied in 33 families of patients with ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament. The study revealed that human leukocyte antigen haplotypes formed certain types of clusters, and that some human leukocyte antigen haplotypes were very rare in the Japanese population, suggesting the involvement of human leukocyte antigen-linked factors in the pathogenesis of ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament of the cervical spine. In the families of these patients, ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament was demonstrated by radiography in 56% (10/18) of the siblings. Each of these siblings shared both human leukocyte antigen haplotypes with the patient. None of those who shared only one human leukocyte antigen haplotype with the patient had developed ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament. From these findings, the presence of both pathogenic human leukocyte antigen haplotypes is considered to be necessary for the development of ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament, and this genetic predisposition may be activated by multiple factors, including regressive degeneration due to aging and the environment.

An immunohistochemical study of innervation of lumbar spinal dura and longitudinal ligaments.

STUDY DESIGN: An immunocytochemical study of nerve fibers in lumbar spinal dura and longitudinal ligaments was conducted in New Zealand white rabbits. OBJECTIVES: To demonstrate the presence of nerve fibers and to establish the presence of nociceptive and sympathetic nerve fibers in lumbar dura and longitudinal ligaments. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: The role of dura as a source of low back pain is still unclear, and the data present a somewhat conflicting picture of the nature of nociceptive innervation in this tissue. METHODS: An immunocytochemical method was used to study dura and longitudinal ligaments from New Zealand White rabbits. RESULTS: Numerous fine nerve fibers and some small bundles were demonstrated in both the dura and the longitudinal ligaments. In dorsal dura, the fibers were seen at lateral margins running toward midline. In ventral dura and longitudinal ligaments, the fibers were seen throughout the substance of these tissues. A population of substance P, calcitonin gene-related peptide, and tyrosine hydroxylase-reactive nerve fibers were observed in all the tissues. In addition, fibers exhibiting nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate diaphorase activity were also observed, indicating the presence of nitric oxide in dura. CONCLUSIONS: The results clearly demonstrate an extensive distribution of nerve fibers in dura and longitudinal ligaments. The presence of a significant number of putative nociceptive fibers supports a possible role for these structures as a source of low back pain and radicular pain.
