Interception. III: Postcoital luteal contragestion by an antiprogestin (mifepristone, RU 486) in 62 women.

The new antiprogestin mifepristone (RU 486) was studied as an emergency postcoital contragestive. An actual pregnancy rate of 1.6% was observed and was related to the actual conception rate. The follow-up rate was 100%. The patterns of onset and duration of the induced menstruation after mifepristone treatment are described. This method provides a good new interceptive technique when the time for use of postcoital steroids or for a postcoital IUD insertion has lapsed.

Laboratory comparison of three occlusal registration methods for identification of induced interceptive contacts.

This study compared the performance of a new computerized occlusal analysis (T-Scan) system with that of Accufilm and Shimstock foil for the registration of tooth contacts on a laboratory model. Induced interceptive contacts were created on epoxy models in a mechanical closing device and the occlusal contacts were recorded for each registration method. The traditional methods were similar to the computerized analysis but the T-Scan system provided additional differential diagnostic information in force and time modes for an improved occlusal analysis.

Right-hand superiority for throwing but not for intercepting.

In humans, the organization of movements performed by both upper limbs, relies significantly on a left hemisphere "praxis" system that also subsumes speech function. Right hand preference may also be an expression of this left hemisphere dependence, arising from the preferential connections of the right hand to the left hemisphere. Consequently, a manual task that maximizes the spatial complexity of a target (presumably engaging right hemisphere mechanisms), while concurrently minimizing motor-programming demands, was expected to yield a diminished disparity in preference and performance between the hands. Left and right hand accuracy were measured independently for two motor tasks in 48 normal right-handed university students. In the first task, darts were thrown overhand at a stationary target. For the second task, subjects were asked to use the open hand to block (but not catch) projectiles launched at varying trajectories and velocities. ANOVA yielded a significant Hand x Task interaction, in which the left hand did not differ from the right hand in intercepting ability, but was significantly less accurate than the right hand for throwing. A sex difference favouring males was found for both tasks; this difference was not reducible to differences in physique or athleticism.

Glycyrrhiza glabra extract as an effector of interception in Escherichia coli K12+.

Glycyrrhiza glabra polar lipid extract contains a number of flavonoids and related chemical compounds. Studies on the effectiveness of Glycyrrhiza glabra polar lipid extract in intercepting reactive molecules generated from the illumination of the photosensitizers rose bengal and phenosafranin indicate that it is effective in preventing cytotoxicity against E. coli K12+ in a dose-related fashion using illuminated rose bengal. Since only a modest scavenging of singlet oxygen generated from phenosafranin is observed, the effects of the extracts are less related to singlet oxygen-mediated oxidation of substrate (type II reactions) than non-singlet oxygen-mediated oxidation of substrate (type I reactions). Elevated levels of glutathione observed in exponentially growing cells of E. coli K12 were also observed.

Phosphorus interception in floodwater of paddy field during the rice-growing season in TaiHu Lake Basin.

A field experiment located in TaiHu Lake Basin in China was conducted, by application of superphosphate or a mixture of superphosphate with manure, to elucidate the interception of P export during a typical rice growing season through 'zero-drainage water management' combined with sound irrigation, rainfall forecasting and field drying. P concentrations in floodwater rapidly declined before the first event of field drying, and subsequently tended to return to the background levels. Before the first field drying TPP was the predominant P form in floodwater on fields with no P input, DRP on plots that received superphosphate only, and DOP on plots treated with the mixture of superphosphate and manure. Thereafter TPP became the major form. No P export was found from the paddy fields, but a retention of 0.65kgha(-1), mainly due to soil P sorption. The results recommend the zero-drainage water management for full-scale areas for minimizing P export.

The radiocaesium interception potential (RIP) at an agricultural site in Germany.

Erosion and accumulation sites differ in the amount of fallout 137Cs due to its particulate translocation together with the soil. To examine whether these sites differ also in the radiocaesium interception potential (RIP) of the soil, the RIP of the plough horizon and the first layer of the B horizon was determined at 60 nodes of a 25 m x 25 m grid of a field in Scheyern, Germany, where erosion has been observed in earlier studies (e.g. J. Environ. Radioact. 53 (2001) 41). Upslope of the slope inflection point, the RIP values in the Ap and B horizons were significantly greater than downslope. Moreover, the RIP of the Ap horizon was positively correlated with the elevation a.s.l. of the points indicating an effect of erosion processes on the RIP. This assumption was supported by the soil morphology and the highly significant correlation of the RIP with soil erosion rates determined earlier by radiotracer quantification [Naturwissenschaften 89 (2002) 43] if four of 31 soil erosion points located close together were omitted. These results indicate that erosion not only modifies the pattern of fallout Cs but also the pattern of RIP.

Batting with occluded vision: an in situ examination of the information pick-up and interceptive skills of high- and low-skilled cricket batsmen.

The capability of cricket batsmen of different skill levels to pick-up information from the pre-release movement pattern of the bowler, from pre-bounce ball flight, and from post-bounce ball flight was examined experimentally. Six highly skilled and six low-skilled cricket batsmen batted against three different leg-spin bowlers while wearing liquid crystal spectacles. The spectacles permitted the specific information available to the batsmen on each trial to be manipulated such that vision was either: (i) occluded at a point prior to the point of ball release (thereby only allowing vision of advance information from the bowler's delivery action); (ii) occluded at a point prior to the point of ball bounce (thereby permitting the additional vision of pre-bounce ball flight); or (iii) not occluded (thereby permitting the additional vision of post-bounce ball flight information). Measurement was made on each trial of both the accuracy of the definitive (forward-backward) foot movements made by the batsmen and their success (or otherwise) in making bat-ball contact. The analyses revealed a superior capability of the more skilled players to make use of earlier (pre-bounce) ball flight information to guide successful bat-ball interception, thus mirroring the greater use of prospective information pick-up by skilled performers observed in other aspects of batting and in other time-constrained performance domains.

From interception to incorporation: degeneracy and promiscuous recognition as precursors of a paradigm shift in immunology.

The paper evaluates the role of the concept of degeneracy in current immunology. The historical background of the notion is considered, as well as that of related concepts like 'cross-reactivity' and 'promiscuity'. A distinction is made between degeneracy, as a property of a system and promiscuity, as a property of antibodies and lymphocytes, followed by a discussion of the relation of degeneracy to the clonal selection theory (CST). Attempts to accommodate the notion of degeneracy with the CST theory are critically reviewed. The notion of specific agency is identified as central for this debate, and an alternative conception of the immune response, focused on incorporation rather than interception, is discussed.

Complement-coated antibody-transfer (CCAT); serum IgA1 antibodies intercept and transport C4 and C3 fragments and preserve IgG1 deployment (PGD).

In periodontal disease, IgG1 and IgA1 antibodies produced in situ deposit on antigens in the affected tissues. Thus, there is an interest in the effect of co-deposited IgA1 antibodies on complement activation by IgG1-immune complexes. In the present study, we first analyzed the effect of IgA1-immune complexes on complement using human IgA1 antibodies to dansyl (with dansylated human serum albumin serving as the immobilized antigen). It was observed that these IgA1-immune complexes when incubated for prolonged times with 33% human serum as a source of complement received C4b and C3b deposition. As C4b and C3b deposited on the IgA1 antibodies and on the antigenic surface, the complement-coated IgA1 antibodies departed. These fluid-phase complement-coated IgA1 antibodies were transferred to antigen-coated microtiter-ELISA plates, where they became bound to the antigens. Thus, the complement-coated IgA1 antibodies retained their antigen-binding function, especially as a proportion of their covalently bound C3b progressively degraded to iC3b and C3d. Genetically engineered carbohydrate-deficient mutant human IgA1 antibodies were used to assess the role of carbohydrate in accepting the C4b and C3b depositions, and these studies indicated that the carbohydrate on the Fc-region of IgA1 played a positive role. Another interesting finding generated by this study was that when IgA1 was co-deposited with IgG1 antibodies, and serum complement was added, the IgG1 antibodies tended to remain on the antigenic surface. The co-deposited IgA1 antibodies not only controlled (reduced) the rate of the consumption of the first component of complement (C1) and of classical complement pathway activation by IgG1-immune complexes (and therein reduced the rate of complement-mediated dissolution of the IgG1-immune complexes), but also the co-deposited IgA1 antibodies simultaneously intercepted/accepted C4b and C3b, then departed, as complement began to cover the antigenic surfaces. The process in which complement-coated IgA1 antibodies transferred to non-complement-coated antigens is termed complement-coated antibody-transfer/transport (CCAT). In this way, IgA1 antibodies extended the efficiency of the complement system by insuring the specific IgA1 antibody-mediated transport of the captured biologically active complement fragments to those antigens stimulating the IgA1 antibody response but not yet neutralized (completely coated) with complement. Simultaneously by impeding the rate of C1 consumption and by intercepting C4b and C3b, IgA1 antibodies slowed C4b and C3b deposition on the antigenic surface and on the co-deposited IgG1 antibodies. Thus, in the presence of ongoing complement activation, the deposition of serum IgA1 antibodies enabled the co-deposited IgG1 antibodies to better maintain their ability to interact with antigens. We termed this latter phenomenon, preservation of IgG antibody deployment (PGD). In summary, co-deposited IgA1 antibodies maximized the efficiency of the complement system, transported their covalently bound complement fragments to specific antigens and sustained the effective deployment of IgG1 antibodies directed to those same antigens.

Design of a placebo-controlled clinical trial of long-acting diltiazem and aspirin versus aspirin alone in patients receiving thrombolysis with a first acute myocardial infarction. Incomplete Infarction Trial of European Research Collaborators Evaluating Prognosis Post-Thrombolysis (diltiazem) (INTERCEPT) Research Group.

Several pharmacologic forms of adjunctive therapy, designed to enhance the efficacy of thrombolysis following acute myocardial infarction (AMI), are being explored. However, few studies have assessed the use of standard secondary prevention therapies (beta-blockers, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, magnesium, calcium antagonists, etc.) for antecedent thrombolysis. Although calcium antagonists have not been shown to alter post-AMI mortality, diltiazem has been shown to reduce recurrent nonfatal infarction and myocardial ischemia following non-Q-wave AMI. Because both non-Q-wave AMI and AMI treated with thrombolytic therapy result in early reperfusion and clinical manifestations of "incomplete infarction" (i.e., aborted transmural infarction), we hypothesize that prophylactic administration of diltiazem to AMI patients who receive thrombolysis before other therapies might decrease ischemic complications. We have initiated a multicenter, randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind, parallel-group comparison of long-acting diltiazem 300 mg/day and aspirin 160 mg/day versus aspirin 160 mg/day alone in up to 920 patients with an uncomplicated first AMI (no heart failure or left ventricular dysfunction) within 36 to 96 hours of receiving thrombolysis. Active enrollment is under way at 46 centers in the United Kingdom, Belgium, The Netherlands, and Denmark. This trial (known as the Incomplete INfarction Trial of European Research Collaborators Evaluating Prognosis Post-Thrombolysis [diltiazem], or INTERCEPT) represents the first long-term, large-scale, prospective study of a calcium antagonist administered post-thrombolysis as adjunctive therapy to AMI patients in which the primary trial objective is to assess the effect of blinded therapy on the 6-month cumulative occurrence of a combined clinical end point (cardiac death, recurrent nonfatal AMI, and medically refractory ischemia).

Absence of interceptive effect in rats treated with Solanum lycocarpum (St. Hil).

The interceptive effect of the powder of Solanum lycocarpum (St. Hil) (Solanaceae) fruit, used as a hypoglycemic agent by diabetic patients in Minas Gerais state (Brazil), was evaluated to observe possible effects upon zygote and pre-embryo transport in rats, since it contains solamargine and solasonine from which a 3beta-acetoxipregna-5,16-dien-20-one is obtained as well as an alkaloid with stereospecific configuration to the synthesis of steroid hormones. Inseminated rats received an aqueous suspension of 100 mg of the lobeira powder/kg of body weight, by oral gavage, from the 1st to the 4th day of pregnancy. A control group received 5 mL of distilled water in the same schedule. The pregnant rats were weighed at the beginning of treatment and on sacrifice day. Animals were killed on the 5th day of pregnancy. The oviducts and uterine horns were removed and flushed with saline solution to count expanded blastocysts. It was concluded that administration of lobeira did not cause maternal toxicity, alteration of the pre-embryo transport or reduction of the number of expanded blastocysts.

Pregnancy interceptive activity of Melia azedarach Linn. in adult female Sprague-Dawley rats.

Ethanolic extract of the root of Melia azedarach Linn. (family: Meliaceae) collected from the Institute campus intercepted pregnancy in 60% and 75% adult female rats when administered at 250 and 500 mg/kg daily doses, respectively, on Days 1-10 post-coitum by the oral route. On fractionation, the activity was localized in the chloroform fraction of the ethanolic extract, which showed 80-100% activity at 250 mg/kg daily dose in repeat tests. In animals that became pregnant, there was also a significant reduction in mean number of implantations and all the implantations exhibited signs of resorption. Of the four major compounds isolated in sufficient quantity and characterized from the active chloroform fraction, two compounds showed only marginal (50%) contragestational effect. Further exploration of the active chloroform fraction, which is also devoid of estrogen agonistic activity at the contraceptive dose in immature rat bioassay, is being undertaken to identify and characterize the active principle(s).

Interceptive effect of Lapachol in rats.

Lapachol is a naphtoquinone with therapeutic potential against Chagas disease and is also used as an antimalarial agent. To study the reproductive toxicity potential of Lapachol, pregnant Wistar rats were treated with 0.5 mL of distilled water (control group), 0.5 mL of hydroalcoholic solution (vehicle group), or 20 mg of Lapachol in 0.5 mL of hydroalcoholic solution (treated group) by oral gavage from the 8th to the 12th day of pregnancy. The following variables were observed: maternal body weight on days 1, 6, 15, and 21; food intake on days 2, 6, 15, and 21 of pregnancy. The number of live and dead fetuses and the sites of resorptions were counted. The ovaries were weighed and the corpora lutea were counted. Data were analyzed by ANOVA one-way Dunnett test and chi 2 test. Results showed that mothers were uneffected but there was 100% fetal/embryo mortality, indicative of a strong interceptive effect of Lapachol in rats.

A comparison of high-dose estrogens versus low-dose ethinylestradiol and norgestrel combination in postcoital interception: a study in 493 women.

Ethinylestradiol (EE), at a dosage of 5 mg/day for 5 consecutive days (5 mg EE), has generally been used for interception. A combination of 200 micrograms EE and 2 mg dl-norgestrel (EE + NG) was proposed as an effective alternative. Efficacy and tolerance of these methods were compared in a randomized, double-blind study. A group of 465 women was studied with a follow-up rate of 94.3%. In the 5 mg EE group a pregnancy rate of 0.9% was observed, and in the EE + NG group a rate of 0.4% was found. These rates differ significantly from the expected rates (P less than 0.0005, in both series). Nausea was noted in 59.1% of the 5 mg EE group and in 54.0% of the EE + NG series. Nausea and vomiting occurred in 20.8% and 15.8%, respectively. The efficacy of both methods as alternative morning-after medication was confirmed. The new method is preferable because treatment is limited to only 1 day.

Interception and attenuation of atmospheric pollution in a lowland ash forested site, Old Pond Close, Northamptonshire, UK.

A study of interception of chemicals at an ash plantation forest in southern-central England shows the modification of acidic pollution as it passes from precipitation, through the vegetation cover and the soil to generate surface runoff. Precipitation is highly acidic (pH 3.7-4.8, alkalinity -16 to -200 microEq/l) and it is enriched in the strong acid anions associated with acidification (sulfate and nitrate) as well as ammonium and the trace elements aluminium and zinc. The concentration of both sea-salt and pollutant components varies considerably over time and this is linked to washout from the atmosphere during precipitation events as marked by an inverse relationship between concentration and volume of catch. The catchment is also supplied by sea-salt and pollutant additions as dry deposition: gaseous inputs of SO(x) may also increase sulfate deposition. Through the vegetation, much of the acidity is neutralised and, particularly during the growth period, calcium, magnesium and potassium is cycled, while sodium and nitrate are partially removed. Within the catchment, weathering ensures that further base cation production occurs leading to enhanced neutralisation of acidity and the generation of positive alkalinities. As a result, surface runoff becomes buffered with alkalinity approximately 490 microEq/l and pH approximately 7.9. Thus, although the acidification input from the atmosphere is high, this does not translate to acidic runoff due to within-canopy and within-soil processes.

Sealed environment chamber for canopy light interception and trace hydrocarbon analyses.

Two sealed chambers were constructed, each measuring approximately 4.5 m x 3 m x 2.5 m (LxWxH). Heat exchangers and air handling components were integrated within the sealed environment. Construction materials were chosen to minimize off-gassing and oxidation. Acceptable materials included stainless steel, Teflon (TM), glass and Heresite (TM) or baked enamel coated metal parts. The glass-topped chambers have externally mounted microwave powered light sources providing minimum PAR at canopy level of 1000 micrometers m-2 s-1. Major gases (CO2, O2) were monitored. Other environmental variables relevant to plant production (humidity, temperature, nutrient solution) were monitored and controlled continuously. Typical environment control capability and system specifications are presented. The facility is described as a venue ideally suited to address specific research objectives in plant canopy light interception, such as the roles of novel microwave powered overhead and inner-canopy light sources for dense plant canopies. In addition, control of recycled hydroponic nutrient solutions and analysis of trace atmospheric hydrocarbons in the context of sealed environment life support can be concurrently monitored.
