Crystallites dimensions of enamel.

In this paper the average diameter of enamel crystallites in mature, deciduous and fluorosed human enamel as well as in bovine enamel (in vivo and in vitro remineralized) is discussed. The investigation was carried out on broken surfaces of the various kinds of enamel with a scanning electron microscope. Corrections have been applied for the thickness of the gold-layer deposited. The average crystallite diameters for sound, deciduous and fluorosed human enamel were : 36 nm; 46 nm and 81 nm, respectively. The values for sound, remineralized in vitro and remineralized in vivo bovine enamel were 57 nm; 97 nm and 63 nm, respectively. The results indicate furthermore that if a correction for the sputtered goldlayer is applied, the results for SEM and TEM microscopy are in good agreement with each other. The difference between in vivo and in vitro remineralized bovine enamel is most likely due to differences in speed of remineralization and/or the presence of saliva.

Tooth maturation in cleft lip, cleft palate, or both.

The relation between chronologic age and the development of permanent teeth in patients with cleft lip, cleft palate, or both was investigated according to the method described by Demirjian et al (1973). The patients were divided into three groups: (1) those with bilateral cleft lip and palate (BCLP), (2) those with unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP), and (3) those with cleft palate only (CP). Panoramic radiographs of 107 Caucasian children (66 boys and 41 girls) aged 4 to 12 years were evaluated. The degree of maturation of each of the permanent teeth on the left side of the mandible was determined, and a dental maturation score was computed for each child. The scores were compared with those obtained in a previous study of dental maturation in Caucasian children without cleft from the Chicago area (Loevy, 1983). Evaluation of the data demonstrated that there was no significant difference in dental maturity between girls with cleft lip, cleft palate, or both and with the sample of those free from cleft. There was a significant difference in dental maturity in boys when all cleft groups were evaluated together. There was no significant difference from the normal sample in boys with bilateral cleft lip and cleft palate or with cleft palate alone, but there was a highly significant difference from the normal sample in the group of boys with unilateral cleft lip and palate.

Age Determination by Teeth

[Effect of a mineralizing solution (Minersol) on acid solubility resistance of enamel].

Degree of mineralization of enamel is one of the parameters mediating in its resistance to acid dissolution and at the stage of teething, the enamel is immature and, therefore, present a higher susceptibility to dental caries. This investigation was carried out with 38 preschool children (means = 5.5 years) and 19 children coursing second grade (means = 7.6 years). They were treated with 10 oral rinsing with mineralizing solution in order to evaluate its effect on enamel resistance to acid dissolution; colorimetric technique was used for such purpose. A study in vitro was also performed in impacted third molars extracted by surgery and to two halves of the clinical crowns of such molars the treatment was applied; the other two halves were taken as control. Increase of enamel resistance found was 18.6% in the study of preschool children and 34.6% in the children attending to second grade school. In both groups, 89.5% of the children increased enamel resistance and in the study in vitro increaser enamel was 14.9%.. It is concluded that the use of risings with mineralizing solution at the outbreak of permanent teething increase, significatively, enamel resistance, and that at the age of seven the enamel is still immature, thus its resistance to acid dissolution can be also increased using mineralizing solution.

Characteristics of mineralization of rat molar tooth germs in organ culture.

The behaviour of first (M1) and second (M2) upper molars of 3-day-old rats was compared histologically and by measuring several variables (dry and ash weight, Ca, P and Mg content) on cultured teeth and contralateral control teeth (not cultured). New information was gained by additional computations and calculating correlation coefficients between the variables of the control and cultured molars separately and combined. The M2 seems to perform better in culture than the M1. The M2 model revealed possibilities for further standardization.
