Deciduous tooth dimensions in fetal rhesus monkeys from mothers with induced diabetes.

Thirty-four measurements of the deciduous dentition in 21 fetal rhesus monkeys from diabetic mothers (FDM) and 36 nondiabetic fetuses were compared in order to assess the effects of induced maternal diabetes on the teeth of third-trimester fetuses. After exclusion of 14 variates due to significant age-related variation, univariate statistical analysis suggested a trend toward smaller teeth in the FDMs. Multivariate discriminant function analysis indicated not only a clear separation between the two groups, with molar breadths and some incisor length and breadths serving as the best discriminators, but also that the deciduous dental dimensions in FDMs are smaller than in nondiabetic fetuses.

Relationship between large tubules and dentin caries in human deciduous tooth.

The purpose of this study was to elucidate the relationship between large tubules and dentin caries by using human deciduous incisors that showed various levels of attrition but no macroscopical lesions resulting from caries. The teeth were cut longitudinally in the mesio-distal direction and the exposed surfaces observed with a high-resolution field emission scanning electron microscope. The inside of each large tubule showed dense collagen fibers running parallel to its long axis and small spherical bodies of aggregated crystals, but no marked attrition. In teeth where attrition had exposed dentin at the incisal edge, oral bacteria had infiltrated the large tubules. Furthermore, in teeth with advanced attrition, it was difficult to distinguish between the large tubules and the surrounding dentin matrix, and numerous bacteria were observed in both areas. These findings support the hypothesis that large tubules play a role in the pathway of caries formation in coronal dentin when incisal dentin is exposed by attrition. This suggests that early treatment of exposed dentin surfaces might be effective in preventing dental caries.

[A study on the relationship between deciduous tooth caries in pre-school children and their neonatal conditions].

OBJECTIVE: This study was designed to examine whether the neonatal conditIon might be related to the caries of deciduous teeth in pre-school children. METHODS: 1000 children from 3 years old to 6 years old in Chengdu were surveyed, and 260 children with dmft > or = 6 and 260 caries-free children were chosen. Data was collected by 200 pairs of useful questionnaire from their parents and analyzed by using logistic regression analysis and chi 2 test. RESULTS: The neonatal condition was closely related with incidence rates of deciduous caries in pre-school children (P < 0.05). The incidence rate of children with premature delivery was higher than that with full-term normal delivery (P < 0.05). No significant difference was showed in children with full-term normal delivery and children with dystrophy (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: There should be emphasis on the children with premature delivery in caries preventive cares.

Proton-induced X-ray emission analysis of Zn, Sr and Pb in human deciduous tooth enamel and its relationship to dental caries scores.

The absolute concentrations of these elements were obtained by calibration with the animal-bone standard of the International Atomic Energy Agency. From exfoliated deciduous incisors and canines of 193 6- and 9-year-old children living in four Finnish towns, 77 enamel samples from subjects with low and high caries (dmfs = 0 and greater than 6, respectively) were analysed. There were no statistically significant correlations between Zn and caries, or Pb and caries, but a weak positive correlation existed between Sr and caries (r = 0.341; p less than 0.001). The lead concentration in incisors (8.1 +/- 5.3 parts/10(6)) was twice as high as in canines (4.1 +/- 2.6 parts/10(6)), whereas the Sr concentration was lower (63 +/- 18 and 85 +/- 13 parts/10(6), respectively) emphasizing the importance of relating such analysis to the tooth type.

[The deciduous tooth. Diagnosis in pedodontics and its problems. The role of histopathology].

Accurate diagnosis of pulpal and periodontal pathology in children is an intricate question, in fact of mixed dentures and physiological and symptomatological dissimilarity between permanent and deciduous teeth. Some figures of most frequently encountered tissue modifications of deciduous teeth are proposed in order to be considered in the way of diagnosis and therapeutics in pedodontics.

Deciduous tooth size standards for American blacks.

Normative standards for tooth sizes are valuable for assessing a given patient's status, both clinically and for evaluating intrinsic (e.g., genetic, chromosomal aberrations) and acquired conditions. There are, however, very few published standards for American Blacks and none for the deciduous teeth. Mesiodistal and buccolingual crown diameters are reported here for a series of 100 Black children. As with the permanent dentition, the primary teeth of Blacks are appreciably larger than Whites, though the amount differs by tooth type. In general, while all teeth are larger than norms for Whites, the posterior teeth (m1, m2) are preferentially larger. Applications of these standards are discussed.

A transmission electron microscope study of fibroblast changes in human deciduous tooth pulp.

The coronal pulps of four primary canines, free from radicular resorption, and of three primary teeth, with roots entirely resorbed, were prepared for electron microscopy. Mature fibroblasts, similar to those reported in the pulps of permanent teeth, were present in the pulps of the clinically mature teeth. Regression of fibroblasts, evident in the pulps of deciduous teeth at the root resorption stage, was characterized by cytoplasmic changes, modifications in the cytoskeleton and dissociation of cells and fibrils. Deciduous teeth might provide a model for studying pulp fibroblast ageing.

[The morbidity of deciduous tooth caries and the need for prophylactic prosthesis in preschoolers with functional stomach disorders].

The dental status of 335 preschool children with gastric dysfunction and of 800 children living in the same region was under study. The masticatory system abnormalities were found related to the diseases of the digestive organs, with gastric dysfunction among other thing, in the examined preschool children. The intensity of carious involvement of deciduous teeth in the children with gastric dysfunction was found higher than in the reference examinees (6.04 +/- 0.28 vs. 4.99 +/- 0.13, respectively). The carious process progressed more rapidly, complications were more incident, and the deciduous teeth had to be removed earlier in the children with gastric dysfunction, this necessitating prophylactic treatment of this population. A total of 34.33% of children suffering from this condition are in need of treatment for denture defects.

Epidemiological study of some factors related to deciduous tooth eruption.

This community based study evaluates the eruption pattern of the Saudi children (0-24 months), living in the North West region of the country. No child under the age of 6 months in this study had any teeth. The number of teeth acquired correlated strongly with age (r = +0.82, t = 18.7, p < 0.001), and moderately with weight (r = +0.63, t = 9.09, p < 0.001). Age and weight having independent effects on the timing of eruption of deciduous teeth. Before teething began, a threshold weight had to be acquired and female teeth emerged with comparatively lower weights than that of males of the same age. Even though age was highly correlated with the number of teeth erupted, the wide range of normal prevents delay in teething from being a useful index of inadequate growth in this community.

Surgical extraction of a fractured, non-vital deciduous tooth in a tiger.

A 10-month-old, female/intact tiger (Panthra tigris) was presented for a fractured deciduous mandibular right canine tooth, mandibular swelling, and a cutaneous draining tract ventral to the apex of the fractured tooth. The tooth had chronic pulpal exposure and was considered non-vital with periapical osteomyelitis. This case report describes treatment to optimize normal development and eruption of the permanent mandibular right canine tooth.

Genetic analysis of deciduous tooth size in Australian twins.

Investigations of permanent dental crown size in twins and family groups indicate a high degree of transmissible control, but little is known about the relative contributions of genetic and environmental factors to variation in size of the deciduous (primary) teeth. Here, maximum mesiodistal and buccolingual crown dimensions of maxillary and mandibular primary teeth were measured from dental models of 602 individuals, including 99 monozygous (MZ) twin pairs, 81 dizygous (DZ) same-sex pairs, 41 DZ opposite-sex pairs, and 160 singletons. Data were subjected to univariate genetic analysis with the structural-equation-modelling package, Mx using the normal assumptions of the twin model. A model incorporating additive genetic (A) and unique environmental (E) variation was found to be the most parsimonious for all tooth-size variables. Estimates of heritability for deciduous crown size ranged from 0.62 to 0.91. This study shows that variation in deciduous crown size has a strong genetic component, similar to that observed in the permanent dentition. Further studies are required to determine whether the underlying genetic mechanisms are the same for both deciduous and permanent teeth.

Fluoride concentrations at and near the neonatal line in human deciduous tooth enamel obtained from a naturally fluoridated and a non-fluoridated area.

This study sought to obtain a precise profile of fluoride concentrations at and near the neonatal line in deciduous incisors and canines from the naturally fluoridated area (1.0--1.3 parts/10(6) F in drinking water) of West Hartlepool and the non-fluoridated area (less than 0.1 parts/10(6) F in drinking water) of Leeds in England. An abrasive microsampling method was used to determine the distribution of fluoride and phosphorus concentrations. The profile of fluoride concentrations in 100-microm layers before and after the neonatal line, that is, in the prenatal and postnatal enamel, were significantly higher in teeth from the fluoridated than non-fluoridated areas. It was concluded that the fact that the fluoride concentrations were about the same prenatally and postnatally in deciduous enamel obtained from the fluoridated and non-fluoridated areas indicates that fluoride enters the prenatal deciduous enamel and that it is transferred through the placenta.

[Light microscopic presentation of the morphological behavior of the nerves of deciduous teeth during tooth exfoliation deciduous and after loss of the dentition].

Structural changes in the nerve can hardly be demonstrated in nerve sections located intradentally, i.e. away from the area of tooth resorption. pseudohypersegmentation, however, is found intradentally in nerve sections of the radical pulp close to the resorption area. Serious lesions of the nervous substance are found extradentally, in the direct neighborhood of the erupting permanent tooth. If the deciduous tooth was lost more than 12 months ago, intraosseously the final stage of physiological degeneration is reached.
