A menu-driven, touch panel microcomputer for clinical recordkeeping.

Quikchart is a menu-driven, touch-panel input microcomputer system designed for computer-naive physicians active in clinical environments. It enables them to generate patient encounter records, and to store and access them using electronic memory. It also permits printing hard-copy records. The system is designed so that the physician can do all this without resorting to a standard typewriter or computer keyboard. It circumvents the disadvantages of both handwritten records and dictated records. Upward expansion of Quikchart will allow individual systems to be networked into a clinic-wide medical record system.

[Electronic manipulation of clinical data in the hospital].

In contrast to the applications in everyday life computers have found only little acceptance hitherto in medical field. At the department of neurosurgery of the Landesnervenklinik Salzburg an input-terminal was installed and connected with its computing centre. The examining physician feeds the data obtained from the first physical examination with the typewriter keyboard of the input-terminal using an alphabetical and numerical key. The total findings are typed by the computer grammatically correct. The electronic storage of these data allows quick access to single findings and also an easy statistical evaluation.

[Vocal recognition in dental and oral radiology].

Speech reporting benefits by units which can recognize sentences in any natural language in real time. The use of this method in the everyday practice of radiology departments shows its possible application fields. We used the speech recognition method to report orthopantomographic exams in order to evaluate the advantages the method offers to the management and quality of reporting the exams which are difficult to fit in other closed computed reporting systems. Both speech recognition and the conventional reporting method (tape recording and typewriting) were used to report 760 orthopantomographs. The average time needed to make the report, the legibility (or Flesch) index, as adapted for the Italian language, and finally a clinical index (the subjective opinion of 4 odontostomatologists) were evaluated for each exam, with both techniques. Moreover, errors in speech reporting (crude, human and overall errors) were also evaluated. The advantages of speech reporting consisted in the shorter time needed for the report to become available (2.24 vs 2.99 minutes) (p < 0.0005), in the improved Flesch index (30.62 vs 28.9) and in the clinical index. The data obtained from speech reporting in odontostomatologic radiology were useful not only to reduce the mean reporting time of orthopantomographic exams but also to improve report quality by reducing both grammar and transmission mistakes. However, the basic condition for such results to be obtained is the speaker's skills to make a good report.

[ADP system for automatic production of physician's letters as well as statistics analyses in the area of obstetrics and perinatology].

Report about an electronic data processing system for obstetrics and perinatology. The developed data document design and data flowchart are shown. The continuously accumulated data allowed everytime a detailed interpretation record. For all clinical treated patients the computer printed out a final obstetrical report (physician report). By means of this simple system there is an improvement of the information and the typewriting work of medical staff has been reduced. Cost and work-expenditure for this system are limited in relation to our earlier hand made procedure.

Voice terminal may offer opportunities for employment to the disabled.

A rapidly growing information industry based on the combined technologies of the digital computer and telecommunications offers unique opportunities for employment of the physically handicapped. In the studies reported here, the use of voice control was investigated as an alternative to mechanical control for two quadriplegic clients too severely disabled to successfully operate a typewriter keyboard. Using a recently developed voice terminal, the clients were able to type finished copy and program a remotely located computer entirely by voice control. The voice terminal is presently in production. An evaluation of the vocational potential of the voice terminal is currently being conducted by the Rehabilitation Services Administration, DHEW.
